Stent
Safety Questions Trigger Declines
By MARK JEWELL, AP Business Writer
August 16, 2007
BOSTON -- Drug-oozing heart stents became the fastest-selling medical
device in modern history -- and a cash cow for Johnson & Johnson and
Boston Scientific Corp. -- because of the device's ability to prevent
scar tissue from forming new blockages after artery-clearing surgery.
But safety questions about the stents have triggered steep sales
declines and job cuts for the makers, and are expected to shrink the
U.S. market by one-third this year -- a $1 billion drop just four years
after the tiny gizmos were introduced.
J&J is cutting nearly 5,000 jobs due in part to a stent decline after
studies questioned the devices' safety and effectiveness in preventing
heart attacks and bypass surgery. Boston Scientific is preparing its own
cuts after its stock hit a five-year low and its credit rating sank
below junk-bond status.
The industry hopes to resurrect the market by rolling out
next-generation versions of stents, metal-mesh tubes about the size of
an ink pen spring that unfold inside coronary arteries like a scaffold.
Although the new stents are designed to be safer and more effective,
industry analysts don't expect a quick turnaround.
"I'm not going to be so bold as to call this the bottom in the market
yet, but we're close, in this country," said Thom Gunderson, a Piper
Jaffray analyst. "I think in three or four quarters going forward,
you'll see a rebound."

LENA'S COMMENT: This could be a very good thing, if people search out
alternatives and learn how to cleanse the arteries and veins in a
natural and safe manner without invasive surgery or body killing
prescriptions that don't work for long!

Tomatoes
are a great source of lycopene, a substance that helps protect against
many cancers, including prostrate, breast, lung, stomach, bladder,
colon, cervix, and pancreas. Your body absorbs lycopene more readily
from processed tomatoes than from fresh. The eating of 1 tomato and hour
for 8 hours a day has shown to help rid the body of breast and uterine
cancer...

Baby's breathing: Problems are not helped by steroids
August 04, 2007
Bronchiolitis, the respiratory disease that affects the small airways in the
lungs, is the most likely reason for a baby under the age of 12 months being
rushed to hospital. It's usually caused by the virus that is responsible for the
common cold, but it can sometimes become something far more serious in a baby.
Around 3 per cent of all babies need hospital treatment for bronchiolitis - and
doctors routinely give a powerful corticosteroid such as Decadron (dexamethasone)
to stop the wheezing.
But when researchers tested the drug among 600 children admitted to 20
emergency departments for bronchiolitis, they found it was no better than a
placebo, or sugar pill.
A single dose of 1 mg of oral dexamethasone per kilogram of the baby's weight
was no more effective than the placebo in reducing the number of hospital
admissions, or improving the baby's breathing after four hours, or improving the
condition later on.
(Source: New England Journal of Medicine, 2007; 357: 331-9).
LENA'S COMMENT: Straight out of their own
publication!!! Even though it isn't effective it is done hourly in some medical
office or hospital ER! Does that make sense? Not to me! But since when does the
medical world's form of treating make sense? But steroids does damage the bones
in adults and more so in a child, so what can a child expect when growing bones
are involved?

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Yellow, Red, White,
Blue (Zea mays var. rugosa)
Today's vegetable come in an array of colors such as
yellow, red, white and blue with variations in between of all those? And
sadly I received some really bad information in my early adult years on
this vegetable. A badly informed friend told me that today's vegetable
had no nutrients in it to help us and that it was a wasted food? How
that rumor got started I will never know but it is absolutely false! I
did not take the time to even look it up then but I have since found
that is absolutely a far fetched fallacy!
We know the season is here when signs advertising The Chino Valley
Annual Community Corn Dinner and this year is no different? A
vegetable celebrated for its healthy nutrients and something that almost
everyone will eat and likes.
Our veggie this week contains a multitude of nutrients? Fiber to
keep our bowels regular and healthy, along with a multitude of Minerals
such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium,
Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And many Vitamins such as;
Vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic
acid, Folate and Folic acid.
History and Origin
In Native American usage, the word for corn means "our life," or
"our mother," or "she who sustains us." It was the
cultivation of corn that turned Native American tribes from nomadic to
agrarian communities.
It was from the Native Americans that the first European settlers in
America learned about corn. Native Americans had spent hundreds of years
developing what we now know as corn from seed-bearing grass. Long before
Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492, Native Americans were
cultivating this grass in North, Central, and South America. Native
American farmers in the Ohio River Valley had been growing corn for more
than 1,700 years before the first white men crossed the Appalachian
Mountains, and there is evidence that they used corn to brew beer before
Europeans arrived in the Americas.
The Pawtuxet Indian tribe in Massachusetts was cultivating corn when the
first settler arrived, and corn was on the first Thanksgiving table in
1621. If it had not been for corn, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony might
have starved to death during their first year in America. The Indians
taught settlers how to grown corn, pound corn into meal, and how to cook
with it. The words of Governor William Bradford, first governor of the
Plymouth Colony, now inscribed on a brass plaque at Truto (Corn Hill) on
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, reflect the settler's gratitude: "And sure
it was God's good providence that we found this corn for we know not how
else we should have done."
At
first, when taken into Europe, corn was only a garden curiosity but it
soon began to be recognized as a valuable food crop. Within a few years,
it spread throughout France, Italy, and all of southeastern Europe and
northern Africa. By 1575, it was making its way into western China, and
had become important in the Philippines and the East Indies.
Although corn is indigenous to the western hemisphere, its exact
birthplace is far less certain. Archeological evidence of corn's early
presence in the western hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain
considered to be 80,000 years old obtained from drill cores 200 feet
below Mexico City. Another archeological study of the bat caves in New
Mexico revealed corncobs that were 5,600 years old by radiocarbon
determination. Most historians believe corn was domesticated in the
Tehuacan Valley of Mexico. The original wild form has long been extinct.
Cooking sweet corn, whether you cream it, steam it or keep it on the
cob, unleashes beneficial nutrients that can substantially reduce
the chance of heart disease and cancer, according to Cornell
University food scientists. The study found that cooked sweet corn
retains its antioxidant activity, despite the loss of some vitamin C.
The word "corn" has many different meanings depending on what
country you are in. Corn in the United States is also called maize or
Indian corn. In some countries, corn means the leading crop grown in a
certain district. Corn in England means wheat; in Scotland and Ireland,
it refers to oats. Corn mentioned in the Bible is said to probably refer
to wheat or barley. Of course I didn't live then nor do I know anyone
who did and cannot verify that?
One of our favorite ways of eating corn is grilled in its husk. I
usually pull the husk back, remove as much of the silk as possible and
make sure it's worm free, then pull the husk back over the cob and put
on a BBQ grill, medium flame, and cook until husk is well burned?
Turning frequently to cook evenly? Then butter and eat. We also like it
raw on the cob, when it is fresh off the stalk? We also steam it and
eat? I do not put a lot of seasoning on it as we like the flavor
natural... But corn can be fixed many different ways. Corn can be found
frozen throughout the year so you can enjoy this nutritious food any
time?
A most unusual meal but one our grandchildren are quick to ask for is
our Summer Sabbath suppers of Popcorn and mixed fresh fruit salad when
they are here... Corn is great any way it's fixed to eat and they like
it any way I fix it but this is their favorite and I suspect simply
because none of their friends have ever eaten it in that manner?
Enjoy this nutritious food,
Lena

Where does
your food come from? Labels don't tell the whole story
Aug 14, 2007
By Brandon Bailey
SAN JOSE, Calif. _ That loaf of Sara Lee bread on the grocery
shelf in California was made with flour from U.S. wheat. But the
Illinois-based food giant uses honey and vitamin supplements
from China.
While Paul Newman's daughter uses California figs in cookies
made by her Aptos, Calif., organic food company, she turns to
Mexico and Austria for other ingredients. And even though a
Procter & Gamble spokeswoman described Crest toothpaste "as a
truly American product," it uses additives from China and
Finland. Recent reports of tainted imports from China have
focused new attention on a little-known trend: In today's global
economy, more food items are being produced in this country with
some ingredients from other lands. But the FDA inspects less
than 1 percent of all food imports _ and that means consumers
must trust food makers to guarantee the safety of their
products.
"It's not just the stuff that says `Made in China.' It's the
stuff in the stuff that says `Made in the U.S.A.,'" said
Elisa Odabashian of Consumers Union, a non-profit consumer
advocacy group that publishes Consumer Reports magazine. "We're
importing mo e and more of our food and we're inspecting almost
none of it." William Hubbard, a former Food and Drug
Administration associate commissioner who is advocating for a
beefed-up food safety system in the United States, agreed. "It's
not which foods contain these ingredients, but which foods don't
contain them," he said. You may not know it from the label.
Food makers aren't required to disclose the source of what goes
into most products. Some major food makers won't even talk about
it. Campbell's and Kraft use ingredients from around the world,
although representatives there refused to say which countries
supply them. "We don't want to be the poster child" for an
article about imported ingredients, said Campbell's spokesman
John Faulkner. "We'd prefer to leave it that we're very
confident about our practices." Indeed, most European countries
have high standards, Hubbard said. And not all Chinese products
are of poor quality, said Peter Kovacs, a former executive with
several national food companies who now owns a food-ingredient
consulting business, the Kovac Advisory Group.
The lure of lower prices has led some American firms to accept
lower-quality imports, Kovacs added. But he said most major food
companies are rigorous about checking the ingredients they
import, even if the government is not. To understand why so many
American products are a composite of ingredients from around the
world, one need look no further than three products found on any
household shelf: a tube of toothpaste, a bag of cookies and a
loaf of bread. In making a simple loaf of bread, the bakers at
Sara Lee must look to multiple sources for some standard
ingredients, said company spokesman Mark Goldman.
"You cannot meet consumer demand, and meet the demands of a
growing business, without finding multiple sources for your
ingredients," he said. "Global sourcing of ingredients has been
and will continue to be a necessary practice." While Kovacs said
lower costs are often a reason for buying overseas, food makers
also say they obtain ingredients from other countries because
they can't find sufficient quantities in the United States. As
an example, Goldman said, "It's impossible to meet the demand
for honey without sourcing outside the United States." Domestic
production has failed to keep pace with increased demand for
honey in recent years.
Most honey is still produced by relatively small beekeeping
operations, and in recent years, many U.S. honeybee colonies
have been devastated by parasitic mites and a mysterious
disorder known as "colony collapse." Meanwhile, China is now the
world's largest producer of honey, though it's had problems. In
2002, Europe and the United States banned Chinese honey after
finding some batches containing potentially harmful levels of an
antibiotic that farmers may have used to help their bees resist
disease. Imports resumed within months, however, after the
Chinese government halted the antibiotic's use.
For its Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White Bread, Sara Lee now buys
honey from China, as well as Vietnam, India, Canada and several
Latin American countries. Goldman said all of its sources must
meet the company's quality standards. The company's procurement
experts visit suppliers around the world to ensure they follow
health and safety rules, Goldman said. It requires suppliers to
test and certify that ingredients meet specifications spelled
out in purchasing contracts. Sara Lee also does its own testing.
In the United States, its central procurement office sets
uniform standards for a nationwide network of bakeries.
Like other major U.S. firms, Sara Lee also looks to China for
the B vitamins _ thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid _ and
iron that are commonly used to enrich wheat flour. China has
become a leading source of these additives, Goldman said, "as
the Industry has consolidated, limiting the number of available
suppliers." With lower production costs _ in part because of
cheap labor and minimal environmental regulations _ China now
dominates the world market in vitamin supplements and other
chemical food additives, such as stabilizers and emulsifiers,
that are used in American processed foods, Kovacs said.
China has been accused of deliberately undercutting prices to
boost its share of the market for pharmaceuticals and
nutritional supplements. Kovacs said Chinese manufacturers have
been building market share since the 1980s when the Chinese
government poured economic resources into developing its food
and pharmaceutical industries. (EDITORS: BEGIN OPTIONAL TRIM)
Manufacturers also look overseas for other types of ingredients.
When the people at Newman's Own Organics, the company started by
Nell Newman, began planning to make an organic fig cookie, Chief
Executive Peter Meehan said they had difficulty finding certain
ingredients that met organic standards.
Take corn syrup. Many organic goodies are made without it, but
Meehan said the company's Fig Newmans cookies taste better when
they use a small amount of corn syrup to maintain the flavor and
moisture of the cookie "jacket" that wraps around the fruit
filling. "We don't use much, but we need it. We tried all sorts
of other syrups" that didn't work as well, he said. But despite
the huge amounts of corn grown in the United States, Meehan
said, he couldn't find a domestic source that was guaranteed
free of genetically modified organisms. The corn syrup in Fig
Newmans comes from Austria. To assure quality, Newman's Own
Organics visits its suppliers' processing plants.

Household Chemicals May Be
Causing Cat Disease
by Julie Steenhuysen
August 16, 2007
CHICAGO - Common flame retardants meant to keep families safe
from fire may be contributing to a rash of thyroid disease in
household cats, US researchers said on Wednesday.
They said polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs -- used in
televisions, carpeting, furniture and mattresses -- were found
in especially high levels in cats with hyperthyroidism, one of
the most common and deadly diseases in older cats.
"We definitely found evidence that cats are being exposed to
these compounds based on the level of compounds in their blood,"
said Janice Dye, a researcher with the US Environmental
Protection Agency, whose study appears in the journal
Environmental Science & Technology.
Dye and colleagues now believe the chemicals may be linked with
this common disease in cats.
Although hyperthyroidism was a relatively rare disease 35 years
ago, it has become a leading cause of death among US pet cats.
Symptoms include weight loss despite increased appetite, hair
loss and irritability.
Dye, a veterinarian, tied a spike in this disease to the
introduction of PBDEs into homes as a flame retardant about 30
years ago. "The increased use of these chemicals tracked the
increased recognition of this syndrome in kitties," Dye said.
She believes dust from the chemicals may be ingested by cats as
they groom themselves.
"Cats are in this perfect position to be near the products these
chemicals were put in to reduce flammability. They're in our
homes. They're sleeping on our mattresses and furniture," she
said.
She and colleagues analyzed blood serum levels of 23 cats, 11 of
which had hyperthyroidism. They found cats had 20 to 100 times
higher PBDE levels than the average U.S. human adult.
PBDEs were detected in all the cats studied, but the highest
levels of exposure were found in the cats with hyperthyroidism,
she said. "We haven't proven it yet," but it should be studied.
The researchers said there is no evidence to link human thyroid
disease with PBDEs. "If this truly is linked, we should look
more closely in people as well," Dye said.
Dye said of the three main types of the chemicals, two forms
have been banned and a third may be banned shortly. But because
the products are used on items such as mattresses, it may take
some time for them to be completely removed from the home, she
said.
