Eli Lilly has said it found its drug was not to blame.
How stupid is that statement? What else would Lilly say when they are
trying to get a drug on the market? I suspect that the FDA's payoff
bought blindness in whoever is in charge of giving the okay to Lilly! A
few years down the road and billions of dollars in Lily's pocket we may
or may not hear that Cymbalta is in fact responsible for many
suicides, just as Prozac and some other antidepressants suicide dangers
are slowly leaking out!

FDA: Lilly Drug Did Not Lead to Suicide

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration has concluded that
Eli Lilly and Co. (LLY)'s newly approved antidepressant Cymbalta did not
trigger the suicide of a woman from Bensalem, Pa., who was taking part
in a clinical trial.
An FDA investigation found that Cymbalta could not be linked to the
death of Traci Johnson, who hanged herself with a scarf in Lilly's
Indianapolis drug-testing clinic.
Johnson, a 19-year-old former Indiana Bible College student, killed
herself Feb. 7 as she was participating in a study to see how high doses
of the drug affected healthy volunteers.
A memo about the closing of the FDA investigation of the suicide is part
of the FDA's Cymbalta approval package, the first part of which was sent
to Lilly last week, an FDA spokesman said. It gives the drugmaker
permission to start selling Cymbalta.
The FDA declined to immediately release any written documents related to
its investigation.
Lilly has not yet received the memo, but the company was told by the FDA
that it had no further questions about the suicide, Lilly spokesman
David Shaffer said.
"We were informed there would be no findings" contrary to what Lilly had
concluded about the suicide, he said. Lilly has said it found its drug
was not to blame.
The Marion County coroner ruled Johnson's death was by hanging.
Johnson had stopped taking the drug and was being weaned from it when
she killed herself. She took doses up to six times the recommended 60 mg
daily dose for depressed patients.
Lilly later increased from four days to eight the weaning period in the
drug trial.
The drugmaker has said Johnson was healthy and not depressed.
Johnson's suicide came amid debate over the link between some
antidepressants and suicide in users, particularly children.
In March, the FDA told 10 drugmakers to strengthen suicide-related
warnings on labels for antidepressant drugs. Two FDA advisory committees
are currently examining any links between antidepressants and suicides
in children.

Avastin Increases Risk of Heart Ailments

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration and Genentech have
warned doctors that Avastin, used to treat colorectal cancer, increases
patients' risk of suffering heart ailments - including chest pain,
strokes, mini-strokes and heart attacks.

What is generally thought of as a food is a great deal more!
Honey has long been known in folk medicine circles as a "magic elixir."
Known to have antioxidant properties, which we know is necessary to ward
off illness and diseases. After adding 4 tablespoons of buckwheat honey
to their daily diet, participants in a study showed an increase in their
levels of antioxidants in their blood. But when it comes to
antioxidants, not all honey is created equal: The darker the honey, the
more antioxidants it has.
Vitamins in honey are said to be A, B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin),
Nicotinic acid (niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine), B12 (Cyanocobaltamine, C
(Ascorbic acid), D, E (Tocopherol), H (Biotin), Pantothenic acid and Folic acid. Minerals in honey are said to be Calcium, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium,
Sodium and Zinc. Honey has tested out to have
antibacterial properties as well as sterilizing of wounds and sores.
Whether it's the make up or the way the different vitamins and minerals
are put together in honey, we don't know but it is a known medicinal
addition.
Honey is known to improve food assimilation and useful for chronic and
infective intestinal problems such as constipation, duodenal ulcers and
liver disturbances. Reports abound with successful treatment of various
gastrointestinal disorders. Honey, when poured into open wounds, bed
sores, ulcers, varicose ulcers and burns, twice a day heals the worst of
the worst. It prevents infections, promotes tissue regeneration, and
reduces scarring best when used in its pure, unprocessed form. If
applied immediately, honey reduces blistering of burns and speeds
regeneration of new tissue. Many case histories are reported.
Homogenized honey isn't useful for anything but a sweetener as the
healing properties are removed in the homogenization process.
In the alternatives health communities honey is a well known remedy for
colds and mouth, throat or bronchial irritations and infections. The
benefits, apart from antibacterial effects, are assumed to relate to the
soothing and relaxing effect of fructose.
Honey, beeswax, and various other bee products have quite a following in
many Asian countries, as well as in Russia and the rest of Eastern
Europe. One of the biggest health claims is that bee venom cures
multiple sclerosis, but I find no historical cases to back up the claim
even though I've read of people using bee stings for that purpose as
well as for arthritis.
Honey is far better to use as a sweetener for diabetics than sugar as
insulin levels are lower when compared to the uptake of equal caloric
values of other foods. My belief is, nature made our body's to react to
natural substances better than man made sugar, any some data exists to
back up that belief.
Then, there's the purity of beeswax candles compared to the paraffin
candles most people burn in their homes. I hate to break it to you
romantic types, but paraffin candles are just a spiffed-up version of
petroleum products with large doses of chemical fragrance. And they
release decidedly unromantic elements, such as soot and smoke, while
burning.
Burning paraffin candles has been compared to breathing in diesel fumes.
I don't know about you, but that would kill the mood for me. But beeswax
candles don't have that problem. In fact, burning beeswax produces
negative ions, which are nature's air purifiers.
Honey can be used as an alternative to sugar in baking, cereals and any
thing you want to add a bit of flavor!
If you find yourself with a cough and sore throat this winter make your
own cough syrup.
Prepare a triple-strength tea by simmering the herbs in water for 10
minutes, then steeping for 20 minutes. Strain the tea, then stir in
honey and glycerin while the tea is still warm. Add optional essential
oil. Take 1 tablespoon at a time. Stored in a cool place, this syrup
will keep for 2 weeks. In the refrigerator, it will keep for several
months.

Cough Syrup Recipe
6 fresh garlic cloves (minced)
2 cups purified/filtered water
1 tablespoon pure lemon juice
3/4 cup honey
Bring water and minced garlic to a boil. Turn burner off and let steep
for about 20 minutes.
Put into Vita Mixer and liquefy (no vitamixer - let set until cool, then
strain). Add lemon juice and honey, mix well and let sit until cool,
then refrigerate.
1 Tablespoon three or four times a day. Much better than OTC cough
preparations!
Suitable for children, but not for infants, who should not have
honey.

Texas Man Dies From Flesh-Eating Bacteria

HOUSTON (AP) - A man has died from flesh-eating bacteria that
entered his body through a minor cut on his leg.
Dr. Kenneth Dean Creamer, 52, died late Thursday in a Victoria
hospital where he had been treated since July 17, two days after
he was exposed to the saltwater bacteria vibrio vulnificus.
Creamer, a Houston dentist, apparently hurt himself July 15 when
he slipped on a dock during a fishing trip. Within days, both
Creamer's legs had to be amputated and he went into a coma, a
hospital spokeswoman told the Houston Chronicle for its Saturday
editions.
Creamer is the seventh vibrio-related death in Texas this year,
according to the Texas Department of Health. The federal Centers
for Disease Control said a typical year brings 16 vibrio-related
deaths in the Gulf Coast states.
Health experts said the bacteria is common in the Gulf and most
prevalent in coastal and bay waters in warmer months. The
bacteria can be ingested in contaminated seafood or absorbed
through skin wounds.

BALTIMORE (AP) - An anti-bacterial agent commonly found in soaps
and detergents has been found in water from streams and wastewater
treatment plants in the Baltimore area, a Johns Hopkins researcher said
Wednesday.
The chemical, triclocarban, was not found in well water or municipal
drinking water, but was found in samples from six streams as well as
wastewater treatment plants in the Baltimore area.
"We put out almost a million pounds of this every year, and nobody ever
bothered to take a look what happens to the stuff once we are done with
it," said study author Rolf U. Halden, assistant professor of the
School's Department of Environmental Health Sciences and founding member
of its Center for Water and Health.
"We pick up a bar of soap, the material gets washed down, goes to the
wastewater treatment plant, and a lot of it ends up in our surface
water."
Triclocarban is not one of the chemicals whose presence in drinking
water is monitored or regulated by the federal Environmental Protection
Agency, but it is being reviewed by the EPA, Halden said.
The chemical was found in surface water at levels up to 20 times higher
than those reported to the EPA by the chemical industry, said Halden,
who added that his group now plans a wider study of the chemical in
surface waters nationwide. Results of the study have been published in
the online edition of Environmental Science & Technology.
The researcher said his group had to develop a new test to detect the
chemical because conventional monitoring techniques cannot detect it.
"Now the big question is what are the ecological and human health
consequences of triclocarban in the environment? From the chemical
structure, one would expect the compound to concentrate in fish and
bio-accumulate in the food chain, but at this point we can only
speculate," Halden said.
A Web site posted by Frederick Senese, an associate professor of
chemistry at Frostburg State University who was not involved in the
study, says triclocarban kills bacteria by blocking an enzyme that many
bacteria and funguses need for survival.
The highly specific way that triclosan kills also has researchers
concerned about its role in fostering antibiotic-resistant strains of
bacteria, the Web site says.
Halden said the researchers tested water entering and leaving the city's
three water treatment plants as well as samples from the Jones Falls,
Gwynn's Falls, Gwynn's Run, Maiden's Choice Run, Western Run and Stony
Run.
Halden said it is "somewhat unsettling that we've been using this
persistent disinfectant for almost half a century at rates approaching 1
million pounds per year and still have essentially no idea of what
exactly happens to the compound after we flush it down the drain."
