Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

No rain or storms yesterday and at the moment the skies are a gorgeous clear Azure blue without a cloud and reported only a 20% chance of rain, which may or may not happen... Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Watch for tomorrow's "Ask Lena Health Q & A" and maybe help solve a problem you or someone you know experiences...

HELP PLEASE: With the lightening strike last Sunday, next door, knocking out my computer, modem, router and printer some files were lost and one was the "FreeConsult File" and a very important question was unanswered, so if you wrote the following question please resend it so I can get you a personalized answer. No name was given with the question if I remember correctly...

QUESTION WAS: I have a serious problem with my throat. For some time it has felt very constricted, and there are swellings or rather lumps in the glands. One lump just to the right of my wind pipe and next to my adam's apple,  is hard and quite large (about half an inch long by an 1/8th of an inch or so in diameter). The other lumps are very small. When I rub my wind pipe in the hollow area just above my rib cage it feels a little tender to the touch, and if I press certain areas I feel a slight shooting pain or else. I've wondered if this might be cancer, but I don't want to find out."

The answer will publish in Tomorrow's "Ask Lena Health Q & A" But we like to give a more personal answer to the writer, so please resend that email...

Take charge of you and your family's health before it takes charge of you!

Something To Think About
============================

Does Your Doctor Reveal His Medical Mistakes/Errors?

Researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle surveyed 2,637 physicians in the United States and Canada. In the first article based on this survey, researchers found:
65 percent of the doctors would definitely disclose the error
29 percent would probably disclose the error
4 percent would only disclose if the patient asked
1 percent would definitely not disclose the error

But those 65 percent may not reveal it so as to be recognized as an error/mistake...

The researchers say the doctors would use different ways to disclose the error; 42 percent said they would not use the word error, and 56 percent said they would disclose that the patient had been harmed but not the error that lead to it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

When you spray with insecticides, the labels always warn you not to get the liquid on your skin. But they don't mention that your clothes can make a difference in the absorption factor. Proof: The chemistry department at Texas Southern University bought just about every brand of insecticide in the hardware store, and checked to see how the solutions penetrated different types of ordinary fabrics. The researchers tested cotton twill, wool, cotton-polyester, cotton thermal underwear, rayon and acrylic. The results, as reported in the journal Chemosphere, were that all the fabrics were good at blocking the insecticides -- except acrylic and rayon.

Defying Aging Skin Doesn't Have To Cost Thousands!

Of all the physical changes that occur with age, the most apparent are the changes in your skin. You may eventually feel the cartilage in your joints wearing thin, but wrinkles and lines stare back at you every time you look in the mirror.

Your skin really started aging decades ago

The aging process started taking its toll on your skin in your thirties as the oil glands began decreasing their output, making your skin drier. During your forties production of collagen and elastin (proteins that give skin tissue its structure and elasticity) declined, and wrinkles and sags probably became more noticeable. And after the age of 50, all of these mechanisms gather speed-sometimes at an alarming pace.

Hormones also have an effect. When estrogen levels in your body decline, all of the tissues in your body begin losing moisture and thinning out, including your skin.

This deep sea secret diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

All of this drying and thinning is what changes your skin's appearance. And the best way to keep your skin looking and feeling younger is to keep it well-moisturized. But please don't go running to the drugstore to purchase any old moisturizer. Most over-the-counter moisturizers are filled with chemicals that can actually dry your skin, even while providing lubrication to your skin's superficial outer layer.

Try my discovery, no I don't manufacture it just use it, a "deep sea secret" that keeps your skin moist, and looking young and healthy. It's a discovery called Squalane that comes from deep-water sharks-and it does an excellent job of diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in your skin. To learn more about Squalane, Click here to check it out.

When applied topically, Squalane is wonderfully moisturizing. Plus, it contains powerful and effective antioxidants to help your skin protect itself from free radicals. What this means for you is younger, firm-looking skin with a healthy, radiant glow. And since Squalane is so potent, all you need to do is spray a little on your skin and lightly rub it in. I recommend applying it every night before you go to bed.

Your skin will feel smooth, not greasy.  Light marine fragrance.

Overtreatment Present in Some Prostate Cancer Patients

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Aggressive treatment of early-stage prostate cancer may not always be the best choice, according researchers in a new study.

Study investigators at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ann Arbor, found more than half of the 24,835 men they observed with lower-risk prostate cancer underwent surgery or radiation when a monitoring, or expectant management, approach could have been done instead.

"For some men with early-stage prostate cancer, surgery or radiation therapy may result in substantial negative effects without a survival benefit," says study author John T. Wei, M.D., M.S.

Researchers report of the 13,537 men who chose immediate treatment, 45 percent had radiation therapy, and 10 percent had their prostate removed. Men older than 70 who sought direct treatment had the greatest likelihood of being over-treated within a year of diagnosis.

Many men are diagnosed with slow-growing tumors that would never cause health problems or death, according to the background information in the article. These men could forego treatment and not suffer the side effects of surgery and radiation, like impotence and incontinence.

"Efforts to reduce overtreatment should be a clinical and public health priority," write the study authors.

LENA'S COMMENT: I watched this scenario over and over in my years in a doctors office. I also saw those who were smart enough to say no to treatment for their prostate cancer live for many many years without the problems that happened to those poor guys who listened to the doctor and went with treatment... Most prostate cancer patients will die of something other than prostate cancer if left alone and go with healthy diet, supplements and minerals only...

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Tis The Season, Not Christmas Either!

This purple-black plant is a delectable food. One of our favorite foods in the summer, fresh from the garden.

The purple nutrient rich Eggplant, hated by so many yet loved by a lot also.  Some people we offer fresh eggplant to say; "I don't like eggplant because they are bitter." Well if they are not fresh that is sometimes the case but fresh from the garden they are not at all bitter and taste so different.

A member of the nightshade family, eggplant counts tomatoes, potatoes and peppers as cousins.

The Spaniards of the 16th century called eggplants berengenas, or "apples of love," while some of the botanists of northern Europe of the same period called the species Mala insana, or "mad apple," because they thought that eating it would make a person insane. Equally unfounded was the idea in medieval Europe that it had remarkable properties as a love potion. The history behind the eggplant is long and surprising to many, therefore I will let you click to read as it would take too much room in the ezine. Click Here to read the eggplant_history.htm

Some will tell you that an eggplant is low in nutrients but I beg to differ. The following Minerals are found in them; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium and vitamins haven't been left out either, they include; Vitamin C, A, B-6, E, B-12, DFE, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Retinol. I would not call that low in nutrients?

Eggplant comes in several varieties.

Most often found in stores and gardens are the Large Oval eggplant with various names such as; Dusky, Epic (tear-drop shaped), Black Bell (round to oval, productive), Black Magic, Classic (elongated oval, high quality), Black Beauty, Burpee Hybrid, Ghostbuster  9white, slightly sweeter than purple types oval). Oval Santorini (Whimsical in nature, white in color, this particular 'fruit' needs no watering. Sweet to taste, juicy and quite delicious, this eggplant is beloved by chefs since it does not absorb oil. Lovers of good cuisine should be aware that only in Santorini can one sample this unique delicacy.)

Then there are thinner elongated types; Ichiban, Slim Jim,lavender, (turning purple when very small as a peanut) Little Fingers (6 to 8 inch).

With a third type and usually looked at as edible ornamental eggplant called the Easter Egg (small white, egg-sized, shaped, turning yellow at maturity).

The nutrients vary slightly from one type to the other but all quite nutritious and healthy!

Eggplant stores poorly and prefers a temperature of 50 degrees, and therefore doesn't keep very well at room temperature or in the refrigerator. So growing your own is the smart move to assure freshness or if you purchase at the store should be used within the next 48 to 72 hours.

Here is a great Greek Style Eggplant dish that most love!

Stuffed Eggplant Greek Style

INGREDIENTS:

4 large eggplants
1/2 cup olive oil
Coarse kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper
4 onions, chopped medium
6 garlic cloves, chopped
1 28-ounce can whole, peeled tomatoes
1/4 cup parsley
2 tablespoons basil
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 pounds ground lamb (optional)
1/2 cup white wine
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
4 tablespoons butter, plus extra for baking
4 tablespoons flour
2 cups scalded milk
4 eggs
10 tablespoons bread crumbs
1 cup crumbled feta cheese

PREPARATION:
··Prick eggplants several times with a fork. On a large baking sheet, roast eggplants in 400 degree oven until soft, 35 to 45 minutes, turning frequently to prevent charring. Cool and slice eggplants lengthwise into 1/2-inch pieces. In a saute pan heat 1/4 cup olive oil and brown eggplant slices, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with kosher salt.

SAUCE:
In a saucepan heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat, add 1 chopped onion and 2 chopped garlic cloves and saute until tender. Add tomatoes and their liquid. squeeze the tomatoes in your hands into broken into coarse chunks. Add parsley, pepper, basil, cumin, cinnamon and vinegar. Bring the sauce to a boil and then reduce to a simmer and cook, uncovered, until sauce becomes thick, about 20-30 minutes.
Yield: 3 1/2 cups sauce.

PREPARATION FOR THE OPTIONAL LAMB FILLING:
* Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil with onions and garlic over medium-high heat; saute until tender, 5 minutes.
* Add lamb and brown well, breaking up pieces with a wooden spatula until the pieces are no larger than 1/4 inch.
* Add wine, bring to a boil and cook until wine has reduced almost completely.
* Season meat with salt, pepper and nutmeg and stir in 1/2 cup tomato sauce. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 1 hour.

BECHAMEL SAUCE:
* In a saucepan melt butter, not artificial butter either, over medium-low heat and gradually whisk in flour to make a roux.
Cook 1 minute, whisking constantly, but do not let the roux get brown.
Slowly whisk in warm milk. Bring bechamel sauce to a slow boil, whisking constantly,
then reduce heat to barely simmering and cook 20 - 25 minutes until smooth and thickened.
Remember to stir occasionally so as not to let the sauce stick. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Let cool slightly.
* In a bowl whisk the eggs and then whisk in spoonful of sauce to warm the eggs so they will not scramble.
Slowly whisk in the remaining sauce and adjust seasoning to taste, if needed.

FINAL ASSEMBLY:

*Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large baking dish or lasagna pan (18x8x3-inches) sprinkle 2 tablespoons bread crumbs and cover evenly with half of eggplant. (If meat used drain as much oil from mixture as possible, can squeeze meat in a paper towel and spread over eggplant; top with half of the feta cheese, then with half of remaining bread crumbs. Layer remaining eggplant, then bechamel sauce, remaining feta cheese and remaining bread crumbs in even layers.
Dot top generously with butter. Bake 45 minutes until bubbly and top is well-browned. If necessary, brown top briefly under a preheated broiler. Cool slightly and cut into 3-inch squares to serve.
Serve with extra tomato sauce, if desired.

Serves 12

Enjoy this great food!

Staph Skin Infections on Rise in U.S.
Aug 17, 2006
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE

A once-rare drug-resistant germ now appears to cause more than half of all skin infections treated in U.S. emergency rooms, say researchers who documented the superbug's startling spread in the general population.

Many victims mistakenly thought they just had spider bites that wouldn't heal, not drug-resistant staph bacteria. Only a decade ago, these germs were hardly ever seen outside of hospitals and nursing homes.

Doctors also were caught off-guard - most of them unwittingly prescribed medicines that do not work against the bacteria.

"It is time for physicians to realize just how prevalent this is," said Dr. Gregory Moran of Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, who led the study.

Another author, Dr. Rachel Gorwitz of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said: "I think no one was aware of the extent of the problem."

Skin infections can be life-threatening if bacteria get into the bloodstream. Drug-resistant strains can also cause a vicious type of pneumonia and even "flesh-eating" wounds.

The CDC paid for the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Several authors have consulted for companies that make antibiotics.

Researchers analyzed all skin infections among adults who went to hospital emergency rooms in 11 U.S. cities in August 2004. Of the 422 cases, 249, or 59 percent, were caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Such bacteria are impervious to the penicillin family of drugs long used for treatment.

The proportion of infections due to MRSA ranged from 15 percent to as high as 74 percent in some hospitals.

"This completely matches what our experience at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital has been," said Dr. Buddy Creech, an infectious-disease specialist whose hospital was not included in the study. "Usually what we see is a mom or dad brings their child in with what they describe as a spider bite that's not getting better or a pimple that's not getting better," and it turns out to be MRSA.

The germ typically thrives in health-care settings where people have open wounds and tubes. But in recent years, outbreaks have occurred among prisoners, children and athletes, with the germ spreading through skin contact or shared items such as towels. Dozens of people in Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont recently got MRSA skin infections from tattoos.

The good news: MRSA infections contracted outside a hospital are easier to treat. The study found that several antibiotics work against them, including some sulfa drugs that have been around for decades. A separate study in the journal reports the effectiveness of Cubicin, an antibiotic recently approved to treat bloodstream infections and heart inflammation caused by MRSA.

However, doctors need to test skin infections to see what germ is causing them, and to treat each one as if it were MRSA until test results prove otherwise, researchers said.

"We have made a fundamental shift in pediatrics in our area" and now assume that every such case is the drug-resistant type, Creech said.

And, doctors need to lance the wound to get rid of bacteria rather than relying on a drug to do the job.

"The most important treatment is actually draining the pus," Gorwitz said. Many times that is a cure all by itself, she said.

The study was done in Albuquerque, N.M.; Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Minneapolis; New Orleans; New York; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and Portland, Ore.

LENA'S COMMENT: This should not come as a shock to anyone with all the antibacterial cleaners on the market and antibiotics prescribed. If you read my book "Antibiotic Alternatives" you know I wrote about this epidemic on the way, well it's here, with ways of eliminating and preventing it and will continue to try to warn people but very few are listening and taking precautions. Don't be one of those!

Engineered Grass Found Growing in Wild
Aug 17, 2006
By WILLIAM McCALL

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Grass that was genetically engineered for golf courses is growing in the wild, posing one of the first threats of agricultural biotechnology escaping from the farm in the United States, a new study says.

Creeping bentgrass was engineered to resist the popular herbicide Roundup to allow more efficient weed control on golf courses. But the modified grass could spread that resistance to the wild, becoming a nuisance itself, scientists say.

"This is not a killer tomato, this is not the asparagus that ate Cleveland," said Norman Ellstrand, a geneticist and plant expert at the University of California, Riverside, referring to science fiction satire about mutant plants.

But Ellstrand noted the engineered bentgrass has the potential to affect more than a dozen other plant species that could also acquire resistance to Roundup, or glyphosate, which he considers a relatively benign herbicide.

Such resistance could force land managers and government agencies like the U.S. Forest Service, which relies heavily on Roundup, to switch to "nastier" herbicides to control grasses and weeds, Ellstrand said.

The bentgrass variety is being developed by Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. (SMG) in cooperation with Roundup's manufacturer, Monsanto Co. (MON)

Spokesmen for both companies said they had been expecting the results of the study, to be published in the journal Molecular Ecology.

"We've been working to mitigate it," said Jim King, spokesman for Ohio-based Scotts. "Now we're down to maybe a couple dozen plants."

King said seed from a test plot escaped several years ago while it was drying following harvest in the Willamette Valley, home to most of the U.S. grass seed industry and the world's largest producer of commercial grass varieties.

The main question now, King says, is whether the government will allow commercial use of the experimental bentgrass for golf courses.

"Eradicating it has not been a difficult issue," King said. "The only difference between the turf seed we're working to produce and naturally occurring varieties is that it has a gene resistant to this specific herbicide (Roundup)."

The engineered bentgrass is under review by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which published a "white paper" in June that assessed the threat but did not reach any conclusions - leaving that for an environmental impact statement being prepared by the department's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

But the USDA review paper noted that glyphosate is "the most extensively used herbicide worldwide," and that creeping bentgrass and several of the species that can form hybrids with it "can be weedy or invasive in some situations."

In 2003, the International Center for Technology Assessment in Washington, D.C., filed a federal lawsuit seeking to halt development of genetically engineered bentgrass. The suit is still pending, a USDA spokeswoman said.

The latest study was done by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientists based at Oregon State University.

Jay Reichman, an EPA ecologist and lead author, was not available Wednesday. But he has said there is a possibility the engineered strain could persist in the wild.

"There could be consequences," said Steven Strauss, who heads the biotechnology issues analysis program at Oregon State.

"But they're not catastrophic because there are Roundup resistant species out there - I have them in my back yard right now," Strauss added.

He noted that scientists have been dealing with genetically engineered corn and soybeans for years, but those crops do not pose the airborne seed problems faced by commercial grass seed growers.

Ultimately, Strauss said, development of the engineered grass may be an economic question rather than a biological issue - whether it could affect the cost of agriculture and weed control.

"And that's very difficult because this is in a gray zone," Strauss said.
