Wash. Woman Dies of Mad Cow-Type Disease
Aug 20,
SEATTLE (AP) - A woman being treated for a brain-wasting condition
believed to be related to mad cow disease has died, and an autopsy may
help identify the ailment, authorities said.
Brain tissue from the woman will be sent to the National Prion Disease
Pathology Surveillance Center at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland, Washington state health epidemiologist Dr. Jo Hofmann said.
"There will be brain tissue obtained from multiple parts of the brain
that will definitely provide more information," Hofmann said.
Results could be at least several weeks away, doctors said.
Hoffman said the woman, who had been treated at Harborview Medical
Center in Seattle this summer for dementia and other symptoms, was
younger than 60 and neither resided nor died in the state.
Her identify has been withheld at the family's request, and the date of
her death was not given in an article published Friday by The Seattle
Times.
Harborview officials said they would wait for the test results before
deciding whether to notify about a dozen patients who had brain surgery
after a brain biopsy was performed on the woman and before the
instruments used in the surgical procedure were super-sterilized.
Research indicates that ordinary sterilization does not always destroy
prions. In very rare cases, prion diseases have been transmitted by
contaminated medical equipment.
Tests on the minute amount of brain tissue taken in the biopsy indicated
the presence of prions, misshapen proteins that are believed to cause a
number of fatal diseases by eating holes in the brain.
Human forms include Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease and a variant in people who
have eaten beef from cattle with mad cow disease. Animal forms, besides
mad cow, include scrapie in sheep and chronic wasting disease in deer
and elk.
CJD and vCJD were ruled out but scientists were unable to make a
diagnosis, said Dr. Pierluigi Gambetti, director of the prion center.
"We did all we could, but you can't carry out all the tests on a
biopsy," Gambetti said.
Earlier, doctors said the biopsy tests indicated the woman's disease
most closely resembles an extremely rare ailment known as GSS, short for
Gerstmann, Straussler and Scheinker, the last names of the German
scientists who discovered it.
GSS can be triggered by any of a dozen genetic mutations, Gambetti said.
"It could be something new," he added. "This is always a possibility."
Dr. Thomas J. Montine, chief of neuropathology at Harborview, said the
larger amount of tissue from an autopsy could solve the mystery.
"The brain is unlike any other organ in the body in that function is
highly localized," Montine told The Times in an e-mail. "This means that
small lesions in different parts of the brain can have very different
clinical outcomes."

Healthy Home Cleaning Solutions!
Your Healthy Home May Be Making You Sick
What's your picture of a healthy home? Dust-free carpets, a
well-scrubbed kitchen, and a sparkling bathroom? Think again: the germs
you're killing are probably less dangerous than the cleaning products
you're using to kill them.
Detergents and disinfectants often contain dangerous chemicals,
including compounds linked to cancer, nervous system damage, and
respiratory failure. Limit your use of these products, and be sure to
ventilate the area you're working in by opening windows and/or using an
exhaust fan.
Toxin-free cleaning products found in most kitchens!
Alternatives to the heavy-duty chemicals you currently use are probably
in your cupboard right now -- items such as baking soda (sodium
bicarbonate), vinegar and lemon juice. These toxin-free cleaners will
get the job done without putting your health at risk.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a mild abrasive and deodorizer. It acts as a degreaser,
and in some cases, as a stain remover. Use it to clean porcelain,
Formica, tile, plastic, chrome, stainless steel, linoleum, painted
surfaces, and silver. You can clean countertops, sinks, tubs, toilets,
pots and pans, and even your oven with a couple of tablespoons of baking
soda and some water. It also makes a great air freshener. In addition to
placing an open box in your refrigerator, put an open box in your
bathroom or other odiferous areas. Commercial air fresheners mask odors
by coating your nasal passages. Baking soda simply neutralizes the odor.
Note: Do NOT use baking soda on woodwork, brass or aluminum. It can
darken or blacken these materials.
Vinegar
Vinegar is a mild acid that is also somewhat antimicrobial (able to
destroy microorganisms). Some people prefer vinegar to baking soda as an
all-purpose cleaner because of its antimicrobial properties. A common
recipe is 1/2 cup of vinegar to a gallon of hot water. It's great for
cleaning windows and eliminating mold. You can also use baking soda and
vinegar in combination to clean a grimy toilet or unclog a drain (pour
the baking soda in first, then add the vinegar).
Lemon
Lemon juice, like vinegar, is a mild acid. It can be used to clean
tarnish, grease, and some mineral buildups. The juice of a lemon can be
used to clean brass, bronze, aluminum, and copper. Simply rub it on with
a soft cloth, rinse and polish dry. If the tarnish is particularly
stubborn, let the lemon sit on the tarnished area. Remember to be very
careful when cleaning antiques or other precious items. Don't let any
cleaning agents soak through valuable items.
Antimicrobial oils
For a natural disinfectant with a fragrant odor, combine two cups of
water and several drops of an antimicrobial essential oil such as
rosemary, juniper, sage, tea tree, or eucalyptus in a spray bottle.
Commercial products
Commercial healthy cleaning products that are friendly to the
environment and to your health are also available, though you probably
won't find them in your local supermarket.

Purple, White or Yellow all are good!
Since doing this column I am dedicated to finding out how nutritious the
foods I make are and what they are doing for my health. This week is no
different as my husband brought in a fresh off-the-plant purple-black
eggplant to be turned into a delectable food. One of his favorite
things.
The purple nutrient rich Eggplant, hated by so many yet loved by a lot
also. I usually hear from people we offer fresh eggplant to; "I
don't like eggplant because they are bitter." Well if they are not
fresh that is sometimes the case, but fresh off the plant they are not
at all bitter and so different.
A member of the nightshade family, eggplant counts tomatoes, potatoes
and peppers as cousins.
The Spaniards of the 16th century called eggplants berengenas, or
"apples of love," while some of the botanists of northern Europe of the
same period called the species Mala insana, or "mad apple," because they
thought that eating it would make a person insane. Equally unfounded was
the idea in medieval Europe that it had remarkable properties as a love
potion. The history behind the eggplant is long and surprising to many,
therefore I will let you click to read as it would take too much room in

Some will tell you that an eggplant is low in nutrients but I beg to
differ. The following Minerals are found in them; Calcium, Iron,
Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and
Selenium and vitamins haven't been left out either, they include;
Vitamin C, A, B-6, E, B-12, DFE, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid,
Folate and Retinol. I would not call that low in nutrients?
Eggplant comes in several varieties.
Most often found in stores and gardens are the Large Oval eggplant with
various names such as; Dusky, Epic (tear-drop shaped), Black Bell (round
to oval, productive), Black Magic, Classic (elongated oval, high
quality), Black Beauty, Burpee Hybrid, Ghostbuster 9white, slightly
sweeter than purple types oval). Oval Santorini (Whimsical in nature,
white in color, this particular 'fruit' needs no watering. Sweet to
taste, juicy and quite delicious, this eggplant is beloved by chefs
since it does not absorb oil. Lovers of good cuisine should be aware
that only in Santorini can one sample this unique delicacy.)
Then there are thinner elongated types; Ichiban, Slim Jim, lavender,
(turning purple when very small as a peanut) Little Fingers (6 to 8
inch).
With a third type and usually looked at as edible ornamental eggplant
called the Easter Egg (small white, egg-sized, shaped, turning yellow at
maturity).
The nutrients vary slightly from one type to the other but all quite
nutritious and healthy!
Eggplant stores poorly and prefers a temperature of 50 degrees, and
therefore doesn't keep very well at room temperature or in the
refrigerator. So growing your own is the smart move to assure freshness
or if you purchase at the store should be used within the next 48 to 72
hours.

Scientists Make Malaria Drug Based on Herbal
Remedy

LONDON - Scientists have created a synthetic drug which could
offer new hope in the fight against malaria.
Nearly two billion people live in areas affected by malaria. The
disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, is becoming a bigger threat
as the parasite that causes it develops immunity to drugs used
to fight it. The new drug is based on a chemical found in
traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
Scientists have long been interested in Artemisinin, a herbal
fever remedy that comes from the bark of the sweet wormwood tree
and has been shown to help kill malaria parasites.
But the naturally occurring drug is expensive to make and
requires complicated treatment programs that are difficult to
get patients to comply with.
An international team of scientists in the United States,
Britain, Switzerland and Australia said in research published in
the British science journal Nature they had developed a
synthetic drug, OZ277, designed to offer the benefits of
Artemisinin that could be cheaper to produce and more potent.
It will require tests before OZ277 can become a commercial drug.
But in an accompanying article, Paul O'Neill of the Chemistry
and Pharmacology departments of the University of Liverpool said
the new class of compounds "could offer the best solution to
date for destroying drug-resistant malaria parasites."

LENA'S NOTE: This has been the premise of a large number
of manmade drugs, but the body knows the difference and responds
differently than with the natural real herb.
Alternatives to drinking-water chlorination, such as chloramines, may
produce increased concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) with
toxicities far more potent than those currently regulated, according to
research just posted to ES&T's website (es049971v).
The findings suggests that the switch in drinking-water disinfectants
may cause increased adverse health effects in the U.S. population, says
Plewa, who notes that current EPA regulations are based on limited
toxicological and chemical knowledge. Water companies have been adopting
chloramines and other chlorine-alternative disinfection strategies to
comply with the first part, or stage, of EPA's 1998 DBP rule, because
chloramines, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia, dramatically reduce
levels of regulated DBPs. Part 2 of the DBP rule further encourages
drinking water utilities to use chloramines and other alternatives to
chlorine disinfection. But the new EPA study and other data indicate
that alternative disinfectants may encourage the formation of new
toxicologically significant DBPs, he says.
