The Stretching Misconception - Why It Hurts To Stretch!
Have you ever felt so tight when you tried to move a joint that you
decided to stretch? The odds are that you answered "yes" to that
question. However, many people complain that they feel worse after
stretching than they did before stretching. If you have ever experienced
a negative aftereffect from stretching then you will be interested in
hearing about....
Before getting into the specifics of the stretching misconception there
are two words that needs to be clarified. Many people confuse the word
"spasm" with "cramp". A cramp (also called a "charlie horse") is
when a muscle suddenly contracts totally, and the cramp normally
involves all of the fibers of a muscle. A spasm is like tying a knot in
the center of the muscle and may only involved a few fibers, however
there can be multiple spasms throughout the muscle, with each spasm
feeling like a bump when you slide your fingers deeply down the length
of the muscle. These spasms normally form over an extended period of
time, often from repetitive strain on the muscle fibers. Spasms are at
the heart of the stretching misconception, so it is important that you
think of a spasm as a knot in the muscle fibers in order to understand
why it can hurt to stretch.
A muscle begins on a stationary bone, crosses over a joint, and then
inserts into a moveable bone. When the muscle pulls on the moveable
bone, the joint moves. However, if the muscle has a "knot" in it you can
actually cause microtears to the fibers as you stretch. Think of this
analogy: visualize a strong tree with a rope tied to it. The rope is the
perfect length to insert onto a flexible tree without bending the second
tree. However, if you tied a knot in the rope, the tree would bend. If
you tied a second knot, the tree would bend even further. If you then
tried to stretch the rope so the flexible tree was standing straight,
you would cause the knot to get tighter and the remaining rope would
have to overstretch on both sides of the knot in order for the flexible
tree to stand up straight.
This is exactly what is happening when you have a spasm, or multiple
spasms, in your muscle. As you stretch you are causing the knot within
the muscle to get tighter, and you are also causing the fibers on either
side of the spasm to overstretch. This overstretching may cause the
fibers to actually tear either along the length of the muscle, or where
the fibers attach to the bone at either end of the muscle. This can be
avoided by simply releasing the spasm before you stretch.
A muscle of the low back causes your hamstrings to overstretch
The hamstrings are frequently overstretched, but not because you are
purposely overstretching them, rather it is because of spasms in a
muscle called the psoas (pronounced "so-as"). The psoas is a key muscle
in the movement of our hips and legs, and spasms in this muscle will
cause low back pain and a whole lot more! The interesting thing is that
most people haven't every heard of the psoas, and therefore never
stretch it, yet it contracts thousands of times every single day. The
psoas originates on your lumbar vertebrae (low back), goes through the
inside of your pelvis (hips) and inserts onto the inside of your femur
(thigh bone). When the muscle contracts normally you will either bend
over or lift your leg. This means that every time you go from standing
straight up to even slightly bending forward, the psoas is contracted.
Every step you take will cause the psoas to contract. In other words,
the psoas is contracted about 90% of your life (even when you are
sleeping the muscle is contracted if you have your legs bent).
Due to a phenomenon called "muscle memory" the psoas shortens, however
the distance between the origination and the insertion remains the same.
The muscle pulls on both points and will either pull your leg up or pull
your lumbar vertebrae forward and down. If you are lying on your trunk
you will be told you have a "short leg". But, unless your bones are
actually different lengths, your leg isn't "short", it is just being
pulled up toward your trunk. Or, if you are standing up, the pressure on
the lumbar region will pull the vertebra forward and down, causing your
sacrum to move up, and also causing your pelvis to rotate forward and
down.
As the pelvis rotates multiple things occur:
* The pubis bone moves down causing the quadriceps to shorten in order
to still be able to function.
* The muscles that originate on the sacrum (and insert into the top of
the thigh bone) all torque. One of these muscles is the piriformis which
crosses directly over the sciatic nerve and will press down on the
nerve. Another muscle is the tensor fascia lata (TFL) which merges into
the iliotibial band (ITB). As the TFL torques it puts a strain on the
ITB and pulls on the insertion at the knee. This will cause the ITB to
feel tight, pain to be felt at the hip and knee joints, and the bones of
the lower leg to be pulled out of alignment (and can cause pain at your
ankle & foot)
* The sciatic nerve passes through a notch in the pelvis. As the pelvis
rotates it causes the bone to press up onto the underside of the sciatic
nerve.
* All of the vertebra above the lumbar region will be pulled down,
putting pressure on all of the disks and impinging on the nerves that
exit from the vertebra.
* As the back of the pelvis moves up, your hamstrings are overstretched!
While working with athletes through the years, I've found that the
hamstrings can feel very tight, and there can be tension & burning at
the bottom of the gluteal area as well as behind the knee. This feels
tight to the touch, but simply stretching the muscle (through massage or
stretching exercises) actually causes more pain. I describe the tension
on the hamstrings, and the ITB, by using this analogy: if I hold the end
of my hair, the hair is still limp and there is no pain. However, if I
pull hard on the end of my hair, the hair now feels tight and my scalp
hurts. The only reason the hair is taut is because it is being pulled.
Likewise, in the case of the hamstrings and the ITB, they are only taut
because they are being pulled. Release the spasms in the psoas muscle
and you also need to simultaneously treat the tension of the quadriceps
so they will stop holding the pelvis down, and the pelvis will rotate
back to its normal position. This removes the tension from the
hamstrings

As we near the beginning of the colds and flu season diligence to
building a shield around our body is necessary!
Starting with Halloween and going through New Years sets up an immune
killing frenzy on a large and serious scale...Hopefully you won't imbibe
too seriously in that frenzy but only a small 1% won't.
All those tempting goodies - pies, cakes, candies, eggnog, etc. - will
put your immune system into a tail spin and leave you vulnerable to any
or all viruses or bacteria that comers your way. Every sneeze you hear
and some that you don't hear puts you in danger of coming down with some
viral or bacterial infection.
But this season doesn't have to be devastating to you, if you take
immediate action to correct that scenario. The California Association of
Naturopathic Physicians have set up some guide lines to help repair your
immune system and advise that if you should happen to start feeling
under the weather there are things you can do to lessen the effects and
shorten the duration.
First line of defense should always be prevention, which starts with
daily taking a good high potency multivitamin as well as a high potency
complete mineral. Do not buy your run of the mill pill form on your
local store shelf. If you have a local naturopathic physician or other
natural health practitioner you can find quality with most of them. The
multivitamin should contain a minimum of 1000 mg. vitamin C, 50,000 IU
vitamin A (unless pregnant), 400 IU vitamin E, 15 mg. zinc and 25+ mg.
of the B vitamins.
Something the CANP did not mention but I have had several doctors tell
me over the years is that a mineral should be in a liquid or fast
dissolving capsule form with at least 84 of the minerals your body
requires, to be effective. Drink one quart of pure water (not distilled)
for every 50 pounds of body weight. Avoid all other fluids, coffee,
caffeine tea, and sodas.
Make sure you are taking a high potency Antioxidant regimen daily! If
you have failed to be doing these things through from now through the
holidays you will set yourself up to catch any of those virus or
bacterial infections. One most important steps is; WASH YOUR HANDS
frequently throughout the day to prevent spreading other's germs. Good
idea to make sure a person is healthy and not sneezing or coughing or
running a fever before you shake hands with them.
Waited too late and feel a cold coming on?
If you fail to get started and build your immune system up or back up to
full strength and you should start to feel a tad under the weather, then
first action should be to slow down and stop pushing your body? Take a
long, soaking, hot bath with 1/4 cup Ionic liquid minerals and a
teaspoon of added Eucalyptus or Thyme oil. Towel-dry and then pop into
bed for a full 8 hours of sleep.
Get plenty of rest for the next few days and push the water and juices?
Get plenty of fresh air, direct sun and exercise. Do not take Aspirin or
Acetaminophen!!! Both have proven to prolong illnesses?
Should you have a high fever (a fever under 102º
is a good fever and should not be stopped) or aches and want to
eliminate some of it there is a very effective fever and aches natural
compound at your local health food store made by Solaray called

You can take triple the recommended dose and be safe and feel fine!

Purple, White or Yellow all are good!
Since doing this column I am dedicated to finding out how nutritious the
foods I make are and what they are doing for my health. This week is no
different as my husband brought in a fresh off-the-plant purple-black
eggplant to be turned into a delectable food. One of his favorite
things.
The purple nutrient rich Eggplant, hated by so many yet loved by a lot
also. I usually hear from people we offer fresh eggplant to; "I
don't like eggplant because they are bitter." Well if they are not
fresh that is sometimes the case, but fresh off the plant they are not
at all bitter and so different.
A member of the nightshade family, eggplant counts tomatoes, potatoes
and peppers as cousins.
The Spaniards of the 16th century called eggplants berengenas, or
"apples of love," while some of the botanists of northern Europe of the
same period called the species Mala insana, or "mad apple," because they
thought that eating it would make a person insane. Equally unfounded was
the idea in medieval Europe that it had remarkable properties as a love
potion. The history behind the eggplant is long and surprising to many,
therefore I will let you click to read as it would take too much room in
the ezine.

Some will tell you that an eggplant is low in nutrients but I beg to
differ. The following Minerals are found in them; Calcium, Iron,
Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and
Selenium and vitamins haven't been left out either, they include;
Vitamin C, A, B-6, E, B-12, DFE, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid,

Eggplant comes in several varieties.
Most often found in stores and gardens are the Large Oval eggplant with
various names such as; Dusky, Epic (tear-drop shaped), Black Bell (round
to oval, productive), Black Magic, Classic (elongated oval, high
quality), Black Beauty, Burpee Hybrid, Ghostbuster 9white, slightly
sweeter than purple types oval). Oval Santorini (Whimsical in nature,
white in color, this particular 'fruit' needs no watering. Sweet to
taste, juicy and quite delicious, this eggplant is beloved by chefs
since it does not absorb oil. Lovers of good cuisine should be aware
that only in Santorini can one sample this unique delicacy.)
Then there are thinner elongated types; Ichiban, Slim Jim, lavender,
(turning purple when very small as a peanut) Little Fingers (6 to 8
inch).
With a third type and usually looked at as edible ornamental eggplant
called the Easter Egg (small white, egg-sized, shaped, turning yellow at
maturity).
The nutrients vary slightly from one type to the other but all quite
nutritious and healthy!
Eggplant stores poorly and prefers a temperature of 50 degrees, and
therefore doesn't keep very well at room temperature or in the
refrigerator. So growing your own is the smart move to assure freshness
or if you purchase at the store should be used within the next 48 to 72
hours.

Study: 1 in 3 Adults Has Hypertension

DALLAS (AP) - Nearly a third of American adults have high blood
pressure, putting them at greater risk of stroke, heart attack,
kidney failure and other problems, according to a new government
analysis.
The obesity epidemic and an aging population are to blame,
experts say. Just over a decade ago, closer to one in four
Americans had high blood pressure, and two decades ago the rate
actually was declining.
About 65 million American adults now have high blood pressure -
30 percent more than the 50 million who did in the previous
decade, according to a report published Monday in Hypertension:
Journal of the American Heart Association.
LENA'S COMMENT: I believe Two things have triggered
this BP rise. 1) Drug company's paid for studies skewed to bring
them a lot of money. Then used those studies to change blood
pressure readings making, what for decades recognized as normal
look abnormal. Sells lots of hypertension drugs for them! 2)
Obesity in more than 60% of the population will raise the
readings. Know your blood pressure figures and you decide if you
want to go with the new readings or stick with the old! If you
do have true hypertension try a healthy fruit and vegetable diet
diet, and supplement with
minerals and
meganutrient vitamins for at least six months and see how
much it will drop! Usually works unless there is an organ
abnormality or constant stress.
European Winters Could Disappear by 2080 - Report

AMSTERDAM - Europe is warming up more quickly than the rest of the world
and cold winters could disappear almost entirely by 2080 as a result of
global warming, researchers predicted.
Heat waves and floods are likely to become more frequent, threatening
the elderly and infirm, and three quarters of the Swiss Alps' glaciers
might melt down by 2050, the study prepared by the European Environment
Agency (EEA) said.
"This report pulls together a wealth of evidence that climate change is
already happening and having widespread impacts, many of them with
substantial economic costs, on people and ecosystems in Europe," EEA
executive director Jacqueline McGlade said in a statement.
The average number of climate-related disasters per year doubled over
the 1990s compared to the previous decade, costing economies around $11
billion a year, said the report, the first by the European Union body on
the impact of global warming on Europe.
"Projections show that by 2080 cold winters could disappear almost
entirely and hot summers, droughts and incidents of heavy rain or hail
could become much more frequent," the report said.
Climate changes are likely to increase the frequency of floods and
droughts like those that hit Europe in the past years, damaging
agriculture and making plant species extinct, the Copenhagen-based EEA
concluded. The floods that swept through 11 European countries in 2001
killed about 80 people, while last year's heat wave in western and
southern Europe claimed the lives of more than 20,000.
GREENHOUSE GASES
The EEA findings echo those published last week by U.S. climate
researchers who predicted that heat waves might become more common as
global warming heats the earth and said regions already prone to heat,
such as the U.S. Midwest and Europe's Mediterranean area, could suffer
even more.
The concentration of carbon dioxide, one of the heat-trapping greenhouse
gases blamed for global warming, in the lower atmosphere is now at its
highest level for at least 420,000 years and stands 34 percent above its
level before the Industrial Revolution, the EEA report said.
According to the agency's study, temperatures in Europe have risen by an
average of 0.95 degrees Celsius over the past 100 years and are
projected to climb by a further 2.0 to 6.3 degrees this century due to
the rise in greenhouse gases emissions.
This compared to a global rise in temperatures of 0.2 to 0.7 degrees in
the past century and a forecast of another rise of 1.4 to 5.8 degrees
this century, said the report.
The researchers said glaciers in eight of Europe's nine glacial regions
were at their lowest levels in terms of their area and mass in 5,000
years.
They forecast that sea levels in Europe would rise at a pace more than
two to four times faster than the rise seen in the last century - a
threat to low-lying countries such as the Netherlands, where half the
population lives below sea level.
