Kids Are Back In School
One Very Silent Danger Lurks Daily For Them!
Watch children in any school yard or on their way to
school. See them struggle to walk while bent sideways under the weight
of their backpack.
Roller bags are not the answer as they weight up to 80% empty than a
regular empty backpack. Add books and such and you have them weighing at
least 50% more than a regular backpack and sadly that child will have to
pick that bag up several times throughout the day, making for big back
problems further down the road...
There are correct safety tips for your child's safe backpack
experience... Check out
BackPack Safety Tips.

Thought For The Day
=================
Researchers from
Stanford University, the University of Washington, and the Johns Hopkins
School of Public Health found, among other things, that:
* Children with television sets in their bedrooms scored lower on math
and language tests than kids without their own TVs.
* Adults who watched a lot of television as children were lower in
education level by age 26.
* Those with college degrees had watched less than 2 hours nightly as
kids, compared to more than 2.5 hours for those who'd attained only a
high school diploma.
* Children who were exposed to more than 3 hours a day of TV before age
3 scored worse on intelligence tests at age 6 and Third-graders with
access to a home computer (and who didn't have TVs in their rooms)
scored best of all in academic tests.

Better Control Of
Diabetes With Vitamins!
Try adding 1,000 mg a day of vitamin C (the long-acting
one that lingers in the system) also known as Ester-C... and 200 mg to
300 mg a day of alpha-lipoic acid to help better control your
diabetes...
Another surprise!
A surprising aid to helping stabilize blood sugar is undoubtedly in your
kitchen already -- cinnamon. Dr. Hirt reports that researchers
discovered this while testing people with diabetes to see how common
foods affected their blood sugar levels. For some reason, patients'
sugar levels didn't rise as anticipated when they ate apple pie.
Ultimately, the researchers found that it was the cinnamon in the pie
that helped prevent a rise. He recommends having one-half to one
teaspoon a day, sprinkled over cereal, yogurt, fruit or other food or
beverages of your choice.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Yellow, Red, White, Blue (Zea
mays var. rugosa)
Today's vegetable come in an array of
colors such as yellow, red, white and blue with variations in between
all of those? And sadly I received some really bad information in my
early adult years on this vegetable. A badly informed friend told me
that this vegetable had no nutrients in it to help us and that it was a
wasted food? How that rumor got started I will never know but it is
absolutely false! I did not take the time to even look it up then but I
have since found that is absolutely a far fetched fallacy!
Corn season is here in our area and the annual Community Corn Dinner
will be held this coming weekend?
Our veggie this week, corn contains a multitude of nutrients?
Fiber to keep our bowels regular and healthy, along with a multitude of
Minerals such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium,
Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And many Vitamins such as;
Vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic
acid, Folate and Folic acid.
History and Origin
In Native American usage, the word for
corn means "our life," or "our mother," or "she who
sustains us." It was the cultivation of corn that turned Native
American tribes from nomadic to agrarian communities.
It was from the Native Americans that the first European settlers
learned about corn. Native Americans had spent hundreds of years
developing what we now know as corn from seed-bearing grass. Long before
Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492, Native Americans were
cultivating this grass in North, Central, and South America. Native
American farmers in the Ohio River Valley had been growing corn for more
than 1,700 years before the first white men crossed the Appalachian
Mountains, and there is evidence that they used corn to brew beer before
Europeans arrived in the Americas.
The Pawtuxet Indian tribe in Massachusetts was cultivating corn when the
first settler arrived, and corn was on the first Thanksgiving table in
1621. If it had not been for corn, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony might
have starved to death during their first year in America. The Indians
taught settlers how to grown corn, pound corn into meal, and how to cook
with it. The words of Governor William Bradford, first governor of the
Plymouth Colony, now inscribed on a brass plaque at Truto (Corn Hill) on
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, reflect the settler's gratitude: "And sure
it was God's good providence that we found this corn for we know not how
else we should have done."
At first, when taken into Europe, corn was only a garden curiosity but
it soon began to be recognized as a valuable food crop. Within a few
years, it spread throughout France, Italy, and all of southeastern
Europe and northern Africa. By 1575, it was making its way into western
China, and had become important in the Philippines and the East Indies.
Although corn is indigenous to the western hemisphere, its exact
birthplace is far less certain. Archeological evidence of corn's early
presence in the western hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain
considered to be 80,000 years old obtained from drill cores 200 feet
below Mexico City. Another archeological study of the bat caves in New
Mexico revealed corncobs that were 5,600 years old by radiocarbon
determination. Most historians believe corn was domesticated in the
Tehuacan Valley of Mexico. The original wild form has long been extinct.
Cooking sweet corn, whether you cream it, steam it or keep it on the
cob, unleashes beneficial nutrients that can substantially reduce
the chance of heart disease and cancer, according to Cornell
University food scientists. The study found that cooked sweet corn
retains its antioxidant activity, despite the loss of some vitamin C.
The word "corn" has many different meanings depending on what
country you are in. Corn in the United States is also called maize or
Indian corn. In some countries, corn means the leading crop grown in a
certain district. Corn in England means wheat; in Scotland and Ireland,
it refers to oats. Corn mentioned in the Bible is said to probably refer
to wheat or barley. Of course I didn't live then nor do I know anyone
who did and cannot verify that?
Our favorite way of eating corn is grilled in its husk. I usually pull
the husk back, remove as much of the silk as possible and make sure it's
worm free, then pull the husk back over the cob and put on a BBQ grill,
medium flame, and cook until husk is well burned? Turning frequently to
cook evenly? Then butter and eat. We also like it raw on the cob, when
it is fresh off the stalk? We also steam it and eat? I do not put a lot
of seasoning on it as we like the flavor natural? But corn can be fixed
many different ways. Corn can be found frozen through out the year so
you can enjoy this nutritious food any time?
The grandchildren are quick to ask for and love our Summer Sabbath
suppers of Popcorn and mixed fresh fruit salad, occasionally, when they
are here? Corn is great any way it's fixed to eat?
Enjoy this nutritious food,
Lena

Health Agency Tightens
Rules Governing Federal Scientists
By GARDINER HARRIS
August 26, 2005
WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 - After accusations that some government scientists
used their official positions for private gain, the National Institutes
of Health announced rules on Thursday that ban its scientists from
consulting for drug companies.
"Our research should be based on scientific evidence that is not
influenced by any other factors," Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, director of the
health institutes, said at a news conference.
The rules are being issued after disclosures that scientists at the
institutes leveraged their positions to land lucrative consulting
contracts that seemed to conflict with their official duties or at least
overlap with them. Those contracts caused some critics to worry that
research by the agency could be tainted.
An investigation by the agency concluded that 44 of its 1,200 senior
scientists appeared to have violated rules governing consulting and that
9 might have violated criminal laws.
The conflicts were first reported by The Los Angeles Times.
The regulations are not as draconian as those that an internal panel
proposed in February. Under those proposals, which caused an uproar, not
only was consulting banned, but 6,000 scientists would have also been
forced to sell all shares they owned in pharmaceutical and biotechnology
companies.
Any remunerative activity outside of work - even selling jewelry or
singing - would have had to be disclosed and approved by ethics
overseers. All 18,000 employees would have been forced to limit their
holdings in any one company to shares valued at no more than $15,000.
Under the final rules, the top 200 executives will be required to keep
the value of their holdings in any single drug company below $15,000.
Some 6,000 other employees will have to submit for review their holdings
in such companies. If the holdings are determined to conflict with
official responsibilities, the employees will be asked to sell these
shares, officials said.
Agency scientists will also be allowed to hold fiduciary positions in
medical societies as part of their lives outside the agency, a practice
that the proposed rules would have banned.
"Clearly, we do not want to impede the normal academic interactions that
scientists need to have with the rest of the world," Dr. Zerhouni said.
The changes were welcomed by scientists at the agency who had fiercely
criticized the old proposals.
"This is a very good step forward, but it doesn't end the issue," said
Dr. Ezekial Emanuel, chairman of the executive committee of the Assembly
of Scientists, a group that filed a suit against the old rules and then
withdrew it.
His group, Dr. Emanuel said, would continue to fight travel bans and
bureaucratic inertia that he said is hurting the agency.
The changes disappointed some critics of the pharmaceutical industry's
influence on research.
"These rules by no means end the influence of the pharmaceutical
industry on N.I.H. employees," said Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, director of the
health research group at Public Citizen, the consumer advocacy group.
Dr. Wolfe noted that the new rules let employees deliver medical
education lectures paid for by drug companies. Although no strings are
supposed to be attached to the financing, Dr. Wolfe noted that
scientists who disagreed with the positions of the drug industry were
rarely invited to give such lectures.
The controversy surrounding consulting work and scientists'
relationships with drug companies has been a black eye for the health
institutes, which has for years enjoyed highly favorable press coverage
and widespread support on Capitol Hill.
Investigations found that the health institutes had such poor and
inconsistent controls over scientists' outside activities that the
agency could not even answer investigators' basic questions about the
extent of the problem.
One scientist, Dr. P. Trey Sunderland, a senior researcher at the
National Institute of Mental Health, received more than $500,000 in
consulting fees from Pfizer at the time he was collaborating with the
company in his official work of studying patients with Alzheimer's
disease.
Despite rules that require government scientists to notify the
institutes of their consulting deals, Dr. Sunderland did not make such a
report.
Dr. Zerhouni initially dismissed the problems as paperwork issues or the
indiscretions of a few people. But as the disclosures built, he proposed
modest changes.
Late last year, he proposed a one-year ban on all consulting work while
the agency improved controls. Dr. Zerhouni termed the new rules "the
most restrictive of any we know about in the world of biomedical
research."
The revisions were made after officials received more than 1,300
comments, many fiercely critical, on the proposal. Dr. Zerhouni said he
was not surprised that so many employees opposed the proposed rules. He
said it was always his intent to adapt the new rules after receiving
comments from outside.
The rules go into effect on Tuesday. Officials will have to divest their
stock portfolios by Jan. 30. Dr. Zerhouni said he intended to re-examine
the new rules in a year to make sure they have not had negative effects
on the agency's ability to recruit top scientists.
Dr. Zerhouni also said he hoped to spur a broader discussion about
conflicts of interest in universities.
NY Times
LENA'S COMMENT: Sounds good but is it?? It's a step
in the right direction but Hey they can only take $15,000 now... And
this is called cleaning up the system... I think not... It won't be as
skewed as with the mega bucks, but $15,000 a year in this time of HMO's
crunching doctor's income, just may still push them into skewing
whichever way big pharma wants... How about $0 and be honest???

Colo. Scientist Quits
Global Warming Panel
Aug 23, 2005
DENVER (AP) - Colorado State University scientist Roger Pielke Sr. has
resigned from a Bush administration science advisory team in a
disagreement over research into the causes of global warming.
Pielke, who is also the state climatologist, said the Climate Change
Science Program had minimized evidence that factors other than
greenhouse gases can contribute to global warming.
Pielke also said other members of the team went behind his back to
rewrite a final chapter of its report. Pielke said he was the primary
author of the original chapter.
Pielke said he agrees with many other researchers that human activity is
changing the climate in significant ways, but he has focused on such
factors as clearing land for cities and agriculture, which he said can
affect temperature, wind and humidity.
"I think each member of the committee is an outstanding scientist, and
each is sincere ... but they're missing the broader view we need to have
of climate change," Pielke said.
