Regular Pills May Thwart Yeast Infections

Women who get lots of painful yeast infections can safely ward them off
with a weekly pill, the largest study on the subject has found. Regular,
preventive doses of an antifungal drug for six months dramatically cut
the number of episodes. But it wasn't a cure: Over time, infections
recurred in many women.
Three out of four women get at least one vaginal yeast infection
sometime in their lives. One dose of a drug called fluconazole, or a
week of nonprescription cream, can stop the itching, burning and
discharge.
But up to 8 percent of all women get four or more of these infections a
year, some as often as once a month.
"Then it almost rules your life," said Dr. David A. Eschenbach, chairman
of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of
Washington Medical Center.
The study of whether fluconazole works as a preventive treatment was
reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine and was led by
Dr. Jack D. Sobel, chief of infectious disease at Wayne State University
School of Medicine in Michigan.
The study looked at 387 women suffering from recurrent Candida albicans,
the most frequent cause. Each got three fluconazole pills three days
apart. For the next six months, half took a weekly dose and half took
lookalike dummy pills.
At the end of six months, 91 percent of those on fluconazole were clear
of the yeast, compared with 36 percent of the placebo group. During the
next six months, nearly 43 percent of the women who had taken
fluconazole stayed disease-free, compared with 22 percent of those on
the placebo.
The study was underwritten by Pfizer, which makes the fluconazole pill
Diflucan. Half the researchers and Eschenbach have financial ties to
Pfizer or other drug companies.
Sobel said he hopes his study will end insurers' reluctance to pay for
long-term use of fluconazole. Diflucan costs up to $30 a pill - five
times the price of the least expensive over-the-counter cream - though
new generics are pushing down the price.

At first glance, Tahoe City resident Doug Peterson looks like he is
recovering from a stroke.
His speech is slurred, he has difficulty walking in a straight line, and
he can't sign his own name. By afternoon, he is so fatigued he has to
sit down for the rest of the day. When asked his age, Peterson says he
is 52. His wife Karla, standing nearby, corrects him. He is 53.
Doug has never had a heart attack, and until the onset of the symptoms
almost three years ago, was an active skier, biker and scuba diver. Now
he is limited to walks on the treadmill. Doug traces his problems to a
drug he started taking almost three years before his health began
deteriorating - Lipitor. Two other Tahoe City locals have also
experienced negative side effects from taking Lipitor or other statins,
the name for a family of cholesterol-fighting pills.
While there is no concrete evidence linking Doug's health problems to
Lipitor, after doing years of research, meeting with doctors and talking
to other statin sufferers all over the world online, he and Karla are
convinced of the connection. Pfizer, the maker of Lipitor, claims the
drug is effective in lowering cholesterol and has minor side-effects.
But as Doug and others would ask, is it worth it?
LENA'S COMMENT: Are these minor side effects? I wouldn't call the
rest of your life as an invalid minor!!! This I've watched first hand
with a family member. Luckily I was able to convince her, a couple of
months after the symptoms began, that her cholesterol medication
(Lipitor) was the culprit and statin drugs are bad news and far worse
and more dangerous to health than the cholesterol risk. She stopped the
drug and is now much better and able to get around without severe
lingering problems... Luckily someone spotted the symptoms, me, and got
her off of the med or she could be another ruined life, as it was she
only had a couple of months ruined. Elevated cholesterol is not a
problem to most people. If your blood is whitish when it's drawn for
testing then, yes that's a problem, otherwise leave it alone and eat

grandchildren think lunch or dinner without a plate of sliced raw fresh
cucumber (aka cuke) is a crime!

The cucumber belongs to the same vegetable family as pumpkin, zucchini,
which happens to look-alike, watermelon, and other squashes.
First cultivated in Asia in ancient times, it was brought to America by
Columbus, and was eventually grown by both Native Americans and
colonists from Florida to Canada. Today cukes grow in a wide variety of
shapes and sizes, from the 1"-long ones sold as gherkins to mammoth
greenhouse varieties that can reach 20" or longer. Can be found in
grocery stores year round! Healthy and nutritionally sound.
The high water content in cukes make them a great diuretic for those of
you looking to lose weight and/or lower blood pressure. They also are
full of fiber making it perfect to keep your intestinal system moving
right along another great weight loss item as well as lowering blood
pressure.
Cukes are said to be great in helping in the treatment of arthritis
since it helps eliminate uric acid. Its liquid is also said to be a
rejuvenator and makes us feel and look youthful. Now who can't handle
that? If you want to try rejuvenating your skin either puree or slice a
cucumber and apply it on your face, let it sit for a half hour or so
then gently rinse off with warm mineral rich water (mineral rinse; 1
teaspoon liquid minerals to a couple quarts of warm filtered/purified
water). Cukes are touted to have the power to relax and alleviate
sunburn pain as well.

slices in a sandwich or you can even juice it along with other
vegetables. Some people like them steamed like squash but they lose most
of their nutrients when cooked. Some people have a hard time digesting
raw cucumbers, why, I don't know? Great fast food! My husband and
grandchildren have been caught eating them straight off the vine in the
garden!
This week will find me canning pickling cucumbers to eat year round.

More Platinum Found in Women With Implants

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers have found high concentrations of
platinum in women who got silicone breast implants and in the
children they bore and breast-fed afterward.
The type of platinum found in the women's blood and urine was
different than the traces of regular platinum not uncommon in
people's bodies. It was a highly reactive platinum, used to help
turn silicon oil into the honey-like gel that lends a more
natural feel to a breast implant.
Concentrations were up to three times higher than in women who
didn't have breast implants, according to findings by S.V.M.
Maharaj, a chemist at American University. Maharaj was scheduled
present the findings Thursday to the American Chemical Society
in Philadelphia.
Ernest Lykissa, a forensic and clinical toxicologist who
co-authored the paper, said the study's sample size was small.
But Lykissa said it fairly represented hundreds of women with
implants he's studied over the years.
Women who had implants the longest recorded the highest platinum
concentrations. The heavy metal was also found in bone marrow,
where blood cells are made.
Distinct from platinum released by catalytic converters in cars,
platinum in implants is treated with nitric and hydrochloric
acids and becomes very reactive, Lykissa said. The heavy metal
readily binds in the human body, especially to nerve endings,
short-circuiting communication with the brain.
"You see green, but you perceive a full moon," he said. "All of
a sudden, your brain system is not working right."
Some women developed nervous tics, had faulty perception, and
impaired hearing and eyesight, he said.
Children born to women with implants had problems with eyesight
and hearing, too, but those nervous system disorders may have
been caused by something else, he cautioned.
The Food and Drug Administration in January stunned plastic
surgeons when, contradicting the advice of its expert panel, it
rejected Inamed's bid to reintroduce silicone breast implants.
After safety concerns rose, the FDA banned such implants in 1992
for most patients.
In January, the drug regulatory agency asked Inamed for more
details about what happens when silicone seeps from the implant.
Dan Cohen, a spokesman for Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Inamed,
said the company would speak in detail about its formal reply,
submitted to the FDA earlier this month.
But at the FDA's October 2003 advisory board meeting, the
company briefly discussed platinum dispersion and concentration
in implant patients. The company has tracked those patients for
three years.
"It was not an issue that anyone dwelled on - either our
presentation or the panel," Cohen said.
For its part, the FDA in 2002 surveyed scientific literature
that indicated platinum leaks from implants into surrounding
breast tissue. Researchers said they didn't find anything
suggesting women had allergic responses to leached platinum.
Paul H. Wooley, director of research for orthopedic surgery at
Wayne State University, said it's been suspected for at least a
decade that heavy metals used in manufacturing might cause
problems for women who receive implants.
"I'm not sure these questions have been answered because, in
general, they haven't been asked," Wooley said. "For political
reasons, working on breast-implant patients has been somewhat
difficult to do."

Cleaning Products, Solvents May Cause Asthma -Study

LONDON - Exposure to fumes emitted by cleaning products in the home
could cause asthma in children, a study published Thursday shows.
The study, in the British Medical Association's journal Thorax, found
that children exposed to higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
were four times more likely to suffer from asthma than children who were
not. VOCs are found in solvents, paints, floor adhesives, cleaning
products, polishes, room fresheners and fitted carpets, the study said.
The authors, led by Krassi Rumchev of the School of Public Health at
Curtin University of Technology in Australia, studied 88 children who
were treated for asthma at the emergency department of the Princess
Margaret Hospital in Perth.
"Our study supports the hypothesis that exposure to indoor pollutants
might be important in the genesis of asthma," the authors wrote.
They found VOC concentrations were higher in homes where people smoked
indoors, as well as homes that had been recently painted or had new
carpets.
But they said they did not have enough data to conclude for certain
whether use of household products such as cleaning products, paints and
hobby supplies were to blame.
"Given that VOCs are carcinogenic (cancer causing) and some may be
significantly related to asthma, it is important that an increased
understanding of the factors that affect their indoor concentration is
achieved," the study said.
