CDC: Whooping Cough Cases Misdiagnosed

ATLANTA (AP) - A reported boom in U.S. whooping cough cases is now being questioned after health officials discovered a regularly used lab test misdiagnosed cases in suspected outbreaks in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Tennessee.

The false test results led thousands of people to take antibiotics unnecessarily and even caused a New Hampshire hospital to limit the number of patients admitted since hospital workers were thought to be infected.

The testing errors were reported Thursday by researchers with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a potentially fatal bacterial respiratory infection. Its name comes from the sound victims make as they try to recover their breath after a coughing fit.

Government health officials say cases have tripled in the United States since 2001, with nearly 26,000 cases reported in 2005. Nearly half of those cases were diagnosed with the testing method now called into question, and that has raised doubts about the true number of cases.

"Are we in fact seeing an increase?" asked Dr. Tom Clark, summarizing what some are wondering. Clark, a CDC epidemiologist, is co-author of the report on the misdiagnoses.

The most accurate diagnostic testing for whooping cough requires a week or more to grow the pertussis bacteria from a sample from a patient's nose or throat. Sometimes that's too long for health authorities to take action to prevent the disease from spreading.

Increasingly, doctors have depended on a faster, but less accurate test. Different labs do the tests differently, leading to uneven results, experts say.

Last October, the less accurate method was used to diagnose a 20-month-old child with whooping cough at Children's Hospital Boston. Three dozen specimens from hospital workers also tested positive as well. But those results were wrong, according to the more reliable bacteria culture test results, the CDC reported.

The same situation occurred in March 2006, when a lab worker at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., was diagnosed with the illness. Nearly 1,000 hospital workers were tested, treated and furloughed to prevent infecting patients. Thousands were given antibiotics and vaccinations. The precautions affected staffing levels, and the hospital had to close off some beds. About 100 employees were diagnosed with pertussis using the speedy test, results later found to be wrong.

In April 2004, a 5-week-old infant in one Tennessee community, which CDC wouldn't identify, was diagnosed with whooping cough. Health officials began looking for the illness in other residents. Ultimately nearly 1,500 people were checked or offered antibiotics; 43 tested positive at first. But the more reliable test turned up negative results for all except the baby, the CDC said.

"It's been a roller coaster. Whoa, looks at this big outbreak! Whoa, it wasn't really pertussis!" said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of Vanderbilt University's department of preventive medicine.

It's not clear why so many errors were detected in each incident, Clark said. Contamination of samples does not appear to be the explanation, he added.

The CDC is planning a study to improve and standardize the method of faster testing. In the meantime, people should still get recommended pertussis vaccinations, Clark said.

Clark said he believes there is a real increase in cases, and that many are going undiagnosed. Two states, Minnesota and Massachusetts, have beefed up their case-finding and testing and have both seen whooping cough increases, he said.

408 CASES OF LIPITOR AMNESIA ON MEDWATCH

A review of Medwatch data from the period of 11/03/97 to 4/27/07 reveals 408 case reports of amnesia associated with Lipitor use. Prior to this time Wagstaff and others had reviewed available Medwatch data from November 1997 to September 2002. They gleaned 60 cases of transient global amnesia associated with the use of Lipitor, Zocor and Pravachol and reported their findings in Pharmacotherapy in August of 2003. Pravachol contributed only one case to this total, the remaining cases were equally divided between Lipitor and Zocor. Since a minute number are reported to Medwatch we shudder to think how many really exist!

Statin Drugs Cause Amnesia, Behavioral Disorders and Cognitive Loss

Duane Graveline, a former astronaut and medical doctor is one of the few 'lone voices' warning of the side effects of statin drug use. His website spacedoc.net probably has more information on statin drug side effects than any other place on the internet.

Doc Graveline has now released some more of his research into the side effects of cholesterol lowering drugs. These medicines, which are the biggest sellers in the history of our human pharmaceutical experiment, interfere with the body's ability to produce cholesterol in the liver, and not only that. By suppressing a vital metabolic pathway, they interfere in cholesterol production but also in the synthesis of Coenzyme Q 10 as well as in the synthesis of dolichols, selenoproteins and other important substances.

We have been told for years that cholesterol is bad, or alternatively that there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, but always the message has been that we need to avoid cholesterol like the plague. We must do everything to lower this indictor of trouble. Unfortunately that is very misleading, because cholesterol is a vital substance our bodies need to function properly, and rather than the cause of heart trouble it is merely an indicator that something else is wrong and that the body needs more cholesterol to detox.

The side effects that come with our interfering in an important metabolic pathway are grave and at times extremely painful. Muscle pains are reported by large numbers of users. You only need to read the comments readers of this site have posted at the end of this article about LIPITOR, one of the cholesterol lowering statin drugs. The dissolution of muscle tissue is not only painful, it can lead to kidney overload and eventual death by rhabdomyolysis. But another class of side effects that comes with the use of statin drugs are cognitive degeneration, amnesia and uncharacteristic behavior, such as aggressive or destructive reactions that need little or no external provocation.

Why are those drugs still on the market after years of documented side effects?

They are big business for the pharmaceutical companies that make them, blockbusters that bring in literally billions of dollars every year. No matter the suffering they bring - or the perfectly useless nature of 'cholesterol goals' doctors are told to push their patients to reach.

The important question seems to be to me whether good business for the pharmaceutical industry is really worth the destruction of our health and the suffering and degradation of our quality of life inflicted by these drugs.

COGNITIVE LOSS FROM STATIN USE

Although the attacks of transient global amnesia that I experienced from my introduction to statin drugs were unforgettable and much more responsive to media attention, the more pervasive effect of statins on the entire memory process is far more important to me in my challenge to inform both doctors and patients about statin drug cognitive damage. No one has said it better than Muldoon and no one is better qualified to say it than Muldoon - "there is demonstrable cognitive loss in 100% of statin users".

Twice Muldoon has demonstrated this effect and twice he has published in the medical literature and yet we still have practicing physicians who are completely ignorant of this part of statin's legacy. The reason, unfortunately, is largely because our physicians are far too busy to read the medical literature and far too often tend to get their information about statins from the persuasive drug "reps". Our drug companies have much to gain by telling busy doctors only what they want them to know. That is the job of the "reps". I doubt there is one rep in the thousands out there who has ever related concern about statin associated cognitive loss to the doctor. The numbers of transient global amnesia attacks associated with statin drug use, the compelling research results of men like Muldoon and the legions of our elderly in assisted living and nursing homes who are transformed almost immediately into progressive dementia patients by their statins are things better left unsaid by our drug "reps".

Does the drug company know of this? Have they been keeping up with the adverse drug reports? Of course the drug companies know of this particular side effect of statins. It was first brought out 12 years ago during the clinical evaluation phase of Lipitor. This is the first time Lipitor was used on humans. 2,503 volunteers participated in this part of Lipitor testing. Of this number, seven experienced transient global amnesia attacks on Lipitor and four more reported severe memory impairment for a total of 11 cases of cognitive impairment out of 2503 subjects, or a case rate of about 5/1,000. Not one word of this was ever transmitted to the public. Think of the marketing effect of admitting that out of every 1,000 people taking this drug, five could expect severe cognitive effects. Think of the impact on CEOs, presidents, pilots, heavy equipment operators and school bus drivers. This is why, when I first reported this to FAA in 2000, they were allowing commercial airline pilots to fly on statins because, "They did not know statins could do that." And at the Pentagon where fighter pilots were allowed to fly with statins, the flight surgeons there, "did not know that statins could do that." Yes, management knows and management has been attempting to keep this information hidden as long as it can because untold billions of dollars are at stake.

The "Why" of statin drug cognitive damage had to await Frank Pfrieger's research results first released in 2003. Pfrieger found that cholesterol was vital to synaptic function in the brain and was produced by our glial cells for this purpose. Ordinary blood cholesterol is not available to the brain because when combined with lipoprotein, the resulting molecule is too large to pass our blood brain barrier, so we have evolved this glial cell mechanism to support synaptic function. Glial cells are just as susceptible to statins as any other cell in our body and we finally had an explanation for why Muldoon was right. In the absence of sufficient cholesterol, cognitive functions must suffer. One hundred per cent of statin users have demonstrable cognitive loss!

The reason many of us are not aware of this is because we are not precise creatures. Although our computers are precise, we humans forget. It is part of our inherent makeup. We can lose 10% of our capacity and never bat an eye, lost in the background of daily "forgets", the best we can do.

Those people must have their heads stuck up their you-know-what if they can continue to ignore scientific proof that it does and has existed for many years now and is speeding up! ARCTIC ICE AT ALL-TIME LOW

There is less sea ice in the Arctic than ever before recorded, thanks in part to a warm, sunny summer, a climate scientist said today. And the melting season isn't even over.

On Sunday the sea ice extent was measured at 1.93 million square miles (5.01 million square kilometers).

"It's continuing to go down at a rapid pace," said Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The previous minimum record -- set on September 21, 2005 -- was 2.05 million square miles (5.32 million square kilometers).

By the end of this summer, scientists at the center say, Arctic sea ice may drop below 1.74 million square miles (4.5 million square kilometers).

Bruno Tremblay is an assistant professor of ocean and atmospheric sciences at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, who is planning a research cruise to the Russian Arctic in September.

In preparation for the trip, he has been observing updated maps of the sea ice extent, which show the quickly melting ice.

"I never thought it would go that low that fast," Tremblay said. "There's still a month of melting in front of us, and we're already past the record of 2005."

Tipping Point?

Sea ice -- frozen, floating seawater -- melts and refreezes with the seasons, but some of the ice persists year-round in the Arctic.

The current rate of sea ice melt is much faster than predicted by computer models of the global climate system.

Just last year the National Snow and Ice Data Center's Serreze said that the Arctic was "right on schedule" to be completely free of ice by 2070 at the soonest. He now thinks that day may arrive by 2030.

"There's talk of a tipping point, where we thin the ice down sufficiently so that at some point large parts of it can't survive the summer melt season anymore, so we see this very rapid decline in ice cover," he said.

"It's quite conceivable that that tipping point we talk about has already been reached."

Particularly warm and sunny weather in the Arctic this summer has helped speed up the pace of the melt, Serreze said. But the sea ice decline is part of a decades' long trend.

In the dark days of the winter, some sea ice grows back. Overall, however, the ice pack has thinned.

"It's really a reflection of what's been happening over the past 30 years -- this general pattern of warming, this general pattern of thinner and thinner ice, which makes it more vulnerable," he said.
