Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

The vengeance of the drug industry at their best!

Ga. Healer Targeted Over Cancer Treatment
Aug 29, 2005
By ELLIOTT MINOR

ROCHELLE, Ga. (AP) - Curtis Brown carries business cards with old pictures of his tumors, including an egg-sized growth on his neck. He says they were each shed after the application of a flesh-eating paste containing the medicinal herb bloodroot. "I cured myself of cancer," the cards read.

Georgia's medical board and the Food and Drug Administration don't share Brown's enthusiasm for the paste.

The state board has accused its maker, Dan Raber, a pastor-turned-healer, of practicing medicine without a license. FDA agents recently raided Raber's business, and a doctor could lose her medical license for allegedly knowing Raber was giving people the paste - not approved for the treatment of cancer - and not reporting him.

Raber's paste is described by the medical board as "a caustic, tissue-destroying substance that eats away human skin and flesh." On his Web site, Raber displays graphic before-and-after photos of those who have used the paste, including women with scabs on their breasts and men with scarred faces.

While the state board has leveled serious allegations against Raber, he has not been charged with a crime. Prosecutors are studying the case.

Raber has never responded publicly to the board's allegations. In an interview with The Associated Press, his son, Kelly, defended his father and his products.

"The herb does not kill healthy tissue," Kelly Raber said, smearing some of the paste on his nose. "Instead, it performs a process known as apoptosis that allows the (cancer) cells to self-destruct."

He said his father's paste is being singled out because it's an old remedy that can't be patented and therefore wouldn't generate large profits for the medical establishment or giant pharmaceutical companies.

Dan Raber was named in a state complaint filed against Dr. Lois March, an ear, nose and throat specialist who risks losing her medical license for allegedly providing pain medication to 12 patients who had received Raber's bloodroot treatments. The board said seven of the patients had breast cancer and that the doctor knew or should have known that Raber's use of bloodroot "mutilated their breasts and caused excruciating pain."

March has denied any wrongdoing. "These are wild accusations that aren't true," she said when reached by telephone at her office in nearby Cordele.

During a 2003 crackdown on alternative medicine merchants who made false claims on the Internet, the FDA shut down a Louisiana company that sold a bloodroot paste and its owner was sent to prison. An Indianapolis woman who said she used products from that company and Raber's in 2001 contends in a lawsuit that her nose was eaten away, forcing her to have seven reconstructive surgeries.

A settlement was reached in the suit against the company; Raber is also expected to settle soon, said the woman's lawyer, John Muller.

Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council, said bloodroot has been used for years by nontraditional healers to treat skin cancers, but he acknowledged "the efficacy has been unproven from a scientific point of view."

Brown is a believer. After years of sun exposure, the retired farmer was plagued with skin cancer. Doctors surgically removed cancerous growths from his face and arms, but when a 3-inch-long tumor grew on the left side of his neck in 2002, Brown instead tried the paste.

"None of my people ever survived the conventional way," said the 71-year-old Brown, who listed relatives who had succumbed to cancer. "I knew there was a better way."

LENA'S COMMENT: Where is the anger and indignation for the hundreds of thousands who die or are maimed from the prescription industry? People have the right to make decisions about their health care and yes, that means some will have not so good outcomes, but nothing like the 80% who die from traditional chemotherapy, radiation and prescribed drugs... Yet the small 1% or 2% who have no so good results with alternatives are made to look like criminals and some are actually serving time in prison for that. When are our big pharma guys going to prison for killing and maiming many many more? Never, would be the answer because they have been given the authority to run our medical world and tell us what they want us to know without consequences for their actions...

Dance To Heart Health!

Maybe you've watched the old Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire movies and marveled at how Ginger not only did everything Fred did, but she did it in high heels and backwards.

Well, according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, she was also getting a better cardiovascular workout than Astaire along the way.

In a study of competitive ballroom dancers, both men and women were working within 80 percent of their maximum oxygen consumption. In modern dance, the men recorded a heart rate of 170 beats per minute, while the women were going 173 beats every minute.

In Latin American dancing, men's hearts were coasting at 168 beats per minutes while the women were recording 177 beats per minute.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Yellow, Red, White, Blue (Zea mays var. rugosa)

Today's vegetable come in an array of colors such as yellow, red, white and blue with variations in between all of those? And sadly I received some really bad information in my early adult years on this vegetable. A badly informed friend told me that this vegetable had no nutrients in it to help us and that it was a wasted food? How that rumor got started I will never know but it is absolutely false! I did not take the time to even look it up then but I have since found that is absolutely a far fetched fallacy!

Corn season is here in our area and the annual Community Corn Dinner will be held this coming weekend?

Our veggie this week, corn contains a multitude of nutrients? Fiber to keep our bowels regular and healthy, along with a multitude of Minerals such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And many Vitamins such as; Vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid.

History and Origin

In Native American usage, the word for corn means "our life," or "our mother," or "she who sustains us." It was the cultivation of corn that turned Native American tribes from nomadic to agrarian communities.

It was from the Native Americans that the first European settlers learned about corn. Native Americans had spent hundreds of years developing what we now know as corn from seed-bearing grass. Long before Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492, Native Americans were cultivating this grass in North, Central, and South America. Native American farmers in the Ohio River Valley had been growing corn for more than 1,700 years before the first white men crossed the Appalachian Mountains, and there is evidence that they used corn to brew beer before Europeans arrived in the Americas.

The Pawtuxet Indian tribe in Massachusetts was cultivating corn when the first settler arrived, and corn was on the first Thanksgiving table in 1621. If it had not been for corn, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony might have starved to death during their first year in America. The Indians taught settlers how to grown corn, pound corn into meal, and how to cook with it. The words of Governor William Bradford, first governor of the Plymouth Colony, now inscribed on a brass plaque at Truto (Corn Hill) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, reflect the settler's gratitude: "And sure it was God's good providence that we found this corn for we know not how else we should have done."

At first, when taken into Europe, corn was only a garden curiosity but it soon began to be recognized as a valuable food crop. Within a few years, it spread throughout France, Italy, and all of southeastern Europe and northern Africa. By 1575, it was making its way into western China, and had become important in the Philippines and the East Indies.

Although corn is indigenous to the western hemisphere, its exact birthplace is far less certain. Archeological evidence of corn's early presence in the western hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain considered to be 80,000 years old obtained from drill cores 200 feet below Mexico City. Another archeological study of the bat caves in New Mexico revealed corncobs that were 5,600 years old by radiocarbon determination. Most historians believe corn was domesticated in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico. The original wild form has long been extinct.

Cooking sweet corn, whether you cream it, steam it or keep it on the cob, unleashes beneficial nutrients that can substantially reduce the chance of heart disease and cancer, according to Cornell University food scientists. The study found that cooked sweet corn retains its antioxidant activity, despite the loss of some vitamin C.

The word "corn" has many different meanings depending on what country you are in. Corn in the United States is also called maize or Indian corn. In some countries, corn means the leading crop grown in a certain district. Corn in England means wheat; in Scotland and Ireland, it refers to oats. Corn mentioned in the Bible is said to probably refer to wheat or barley. Of course I didn't live then nor do I know anyone who did and cannot verify that?

Our favorite way of eating corn is grilled in its husk. I usually pull the husk back, remove as much of the silk as possible and make sure it's worm free, then pull the husk back over the cob and put on a BBQ grill, medium flame, and cook until husk is well burned? Turning frequently to cook evenly? Then butter and eat. We also like it raw on the cob, when it is fresh off the stalk? We also steam it and eat? I do not put a lot of seasoning on it as we like the flavor natural? But corn can be fixed many different ways. Corn can be found frozen through out the year so you can enjoy this nutritious food any time?

The grandchildren are quick to ask for and love our Summer Sabbath suppers of Popcorn and mixed fresh fruit salad, occasionally, when they are here?  Corn is great any way it's fixed to eat?

Enjoy this nutritious food,
Lena

Who answers your health question when you call your doctor?

RAND Study Examines Public Health Clinics
Aug 30, 2005
By LARA JAKES JORDAN

WASHINGTON (AP) - One health clinic officer told a caller describing botulism symptoms to go back to bed. Another told a caller describing signs of bubonic plague not to worry.

And not one of 19 public health clinics surveyed by the RAND Corporation suggested isolating a patient whose face, arms and legs were said to be covered with pustules or other smallpox symptoms.

The RAND study, funded by the Health and Human Services Department and being released Tuesday, describes a wide variety of response times and medical advice given its researchers, who posed as doctors in telephone calls to clinics across the country in a test that stretched over nine months.

Overall, public health clinics responded to 91 percent of all calls within 30 minutes, the report noted. But some clinics failed to return calls for days, while others offered troubling medical guidance to people pretending to need help.

Of the clinics called about patients showing "pustules on the face, arms and legs with lesions in the same stage of development, none suggested isolation of the patient or advised the caller to use personal protective equipment," the RAND report found.

"Similarly, when presented with a case consistent with botulism, one action officer responded, 'You're right, it does sound like botulism. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you,'" the report found. "In response to classic symptoms of bubonic plague, the action officer told the caller not to worry and to 'go back to bed' because no similar cases had been reported that day."

RAND researchers posed as emergency physicians when calling the health clinics - in small, medium and large communities in the Northeast, Mideast, South and West - for medical advice. The study did not identify any of the health clinics by name or specific location as a condition of their participation.

Local health clinic officials questioned the report's focus, noting that the 91 percent callback rate probably represents a vast improvement over response times before the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"Should we be doing better? Yes," said Patrick Libbey, executive director of the National Association of County and City Health Officials in Washington. "But a 91 percent response rate might very well be a step in progress. One wouldn't get that from reading the report."

The study reflected the struggle by local public health departments as they attempt to meet sometimes varying and vague preparedness guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, a former secretary of Maryland's Health and Mental Hygiene Department, called preparedness "a complex task" beset by a lag in federal bioterrorism funding reaching local levels.

Moreover, there are no set federal standards on how the nation's estimated 2,800 public health clinics should dispense medical advice, said David J. Dausey, the report's lead author.

"They're trying not to be alarmists," Dausey said, referring to the local health officials' seemingly cavalier responses to calls about the symptoms for highly infectious diseases. "They receive calls all the time, and 99 percent of them turn out to be nothing, or turn out to be something else. And what happens is they become hardened over time."

Court Allows Suit Linking US Aid and Global Warming
August 25, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO - Two environmental groups and four US cities may sue US federal agencies which finance overseas projects which they say contribute to global warming, a federal judge has ruled.

The two federal agencies -- Overseas Private Investment Corporation and the Export-Import Bank of the United States -- had asked the US District Court for the Northern District of California to dismiss the lawsuit. It was brought by Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the cities of Boulder, Colorado, Santa Monica, California, Oakland, California and Arcata, California.

Judge Jeffrey White ruled on Tuesday that US law allows the groups and cities to proceed with their lawsuit because they may be affected by overseas agency-backed projects whose emissions are linked to global warming.

"The landmark decision is the first time that a federal court has specifically granted legal standing for a lawsuit exclusively alleging injury from global warming and challenging the federal government's failure to evaluate the impacts of its actions on the Earth's climate and US citizens," the Friends of the Earth said in a statement on its Web site.

The Export-Import Bank of the United States and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation were not immediately available for comment.
