Something To Think About
===================
All you hear these
days is how you need to lower your cholesterol. Is that a good thing?
YOUR BODY NEEDS CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is popularly portrayed as the enemy, yet your
body manufactures cholesterol because it needs it...
* Cholesterol is a vital component of cell walls.
* It contributes to the production of hormones including estrogen,
testosterone and cortisol.
* As a component of bile, cholesterol helps carry waste from the liver
and clear toxins from the body.
Ironically, too little cholesterol can lead to a variety of problems,
among them an increased risk for stroke, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
In recent studies, low cholesterol levels have been associated with
depression and anxiety. This may be because these conditions are linked
with decreased levels of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. Other
research suggests an increased risk of violent behavior and suicide with
low cholesterol.

Thought For The Day
=================
The Ridiculous; At the
American Medical Association (AMA) annual meeting in June, the House of
Delegates adopted a resolution that called for the AMA to "encourage
the Food and Drug Administration to require that all herbal supplements
carry an ingredient list similar to that required for foodstuffs and
pharmaceuticals."
This is a ridiculous resolution. Why? Because the Food, Drug, and
Cosmetic Act (FDA) already requires an ingredient list and a "Supplement
Facts" panel on the packaging of dietary supplements, including herbals.
Duh!
Asked to comment on this overzealous gaff, Michael McGuffin (president
of the American Herbal Products Association) dryly noted: "an action
that was made in ignorance of the actual law."

F.D.A. Clears Flu
Vaccine Made by Glaxo
By BLOOMBERG NEWS
September 1, 2005
A flu shot from GlaxoSmithKline was approved by American regulators
yesterday and the Chiron Corporation's Liverpool vaccine plant, shut
last year because of contamination, moved closer to being opened as
officials work to avoid another shortage.
The Food and Drug Administration actions may help ensure the
availability of as many as 34 million shots from the two companies.
Michael Fleming, a Glaxo spokesman, said shipments that would begin
going out immediately for its Fluarix vaccine and that it would be
priced in line with other shots currently marketed in the United States.
"Our wholesalers have some orders from customers already," Mr. Fleming
said yesterday in a telephone interview. The McKesson Corporation, the
biggest United States drug wholesaler, and FFF Enterprises distribute
the vaccine, he said.
LENA'S COMMENT: Before getting a flu shot read
Why Are People Choosing Ill Health Last year had less flu than any
year since the flu vaccine came on the market. Is it at all possible it
could be because far less people got it and therefore could not spread
it around? ABSOLUTELY!

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Yellow, Red, White, Blue (Zea
mays var. rugosa)
Today's vegetable come in an array of
colors such as yellow, red, white and blue with variations in between
all of those? And sadly I received some really bad information in my
early adult years on this vegetable. A badly informed friend told me
that this vegetable had no nutrients in it to help us and that it was a
wasted food? How that rumor got started I will never know but it is
absolutely false! I did not take the time to even look it up then but I
have since found that is absolutely a far fetched fallacy!
Corn season is here in our area and the annual Community Corn Dinner
will be held this coming weekend?
Our veggie this week, corn contains a multitude of nutrients?
Fiber to keep our bowels regular and healthy, along with a multitude of
Minerals such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium,
Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And many Vitamins such as;
Vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic
acid, Folate and Folic acid.
History and Origin
In Native American usage, the word for
corn means "our life," or "our mother," or "she who
sustains us." It was the cultivation of corn that turned Native
American tribes from nomadic to agrarian communities.
It was from the Native Americans that the first European settlers
learned about corn. Native Americans had spent hundreds of years
developing what we now know as corn from seed-bearing grass. Long before
Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492, Native Americans were
cultivating this grass in North, Central, and South America. Native
American farmers in the Ohio River Valley had been growing corn for more
than 1,700 years before the first white men crossed the Appalachian
Mountains, and there is evidence that they used corn to brew beer before
Europeans arrived in the Americas.
The Pawtuxet Indian tribe in Massachusetts was cultivating corn when the
first settler arrived, and corn was on the first Thanksgiving table in
1621. If it had not been for corn, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony might
have starved to death during their first year in America. The Indians
taught settlers how to grown corn, pound corn into meal, and how to cook
with it. The words of Governor William Bradford, first governor of the
Plymouth Colony, now inscribed on a brass plaque at Truto (Corn Hill) on
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, reflect the settler's gratitude: "And sure
it was God's good providence that we found this corn for we know not how
else we should have done."
At first, when taken into Europe, corn was only a garden curiosity but
it soon began to be recognized as a valuable food crop. Within a few
years, it spread throughout France, Italy, and all of southeastern
Europe and northern Africa. By 1575, it was making its way into western
China, and had become important in the Philippines and the East Indies.
Although corn is indigenous to the western hemisphere, its exact
birthplace is far less certain. Archeological evidence of corn's early
presence in the western hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain
considered to be 80,000 years old obtained from drill cores 200 feet
below Mexico City. Another archeological study of the bat caves in New
Mexico revealed corncobs that were 5,600 years old by radiocarbon
determination. Most historians believe corn was domesticated in the
Tehuacan Valley of Mexico. The original wild form has long been extinct.
Cooking sweet corn, whether you cream it, steam it or keep it on the
cob, unleashes beneficial nutrients that can substantially reduce
the chance of heart disease and cancer, according to Cornell
University food scientists. The study found that cooked sweet corn
retains its antioxidant activity, despite the loss of some vitamin C.
The word "corn" has many different meanings depending on what
country you are in. Corn in the United States is also called maize or
Indian corn. In some countries, corn means the leading crop grown in a
certain district. Corn in England means wheat; in Scotland and Ireland,
it refers to oats. Corn mentioned in the Bible is said to probably refer
to wheat or barley. Of course I didn't live then nor do I know anyone
who did and cannot verify that?
Our favorite way of eating corn is grilled in its husk. I usually pull
the husk back, remove as much of the silk as possible and make sure it's
worm free, then pull the husk back over the cob and put on a BBQ grill,
medium flame, and cook until husk is well burned? Turning frequently to
cook evenly? Then butter and eat. We also like it raw on the cob, when
it is fresh off the stalk? We also steam it and eat? I do not put a lot
of seasoning on it as we like the flavor natural? But corn can be fixed
many different ways. Corn can be found frozen through out the year so
you can enjoy this nutritious food any time?
The grandchildren are quick to ask for and love our Summer Sabbath
suppers of Popcorn and mixed fresh fruit salad, occasionally, when they
are here? Corn is great any way it's fixed to eat?
Enjoy this nutritious food,
Lena

Antibiotics Aren't Always the Answer
By DEBORAH FRANKLIN
August 30, 2005
Your throat feels as if you've swallowed broken glass, your sinuses have
been clogged for a couple of days, you're coughing up green stuff and
you're slated to fly in a week.
Never mind that your doctor thinks you're suffering from a viral
infection that antibiotics won't touch. Why not start a prescription of
some powerful bacteria-busting drug immediately, just in case?
Dr. Alastair D. Hay, who teaches medical students at the University of
Bristol in England and also treats patients, says that until recently,
even he may occasionally have succumbed to the pressure to hand over a
prescription.
"As a personal policy, I don't get into heated arguments with my
patients," Dr. Hay said.
And giving the standard lecture about how antibiotics will not stop a
virus but may contribute to the growing, worldwide problem of drug
resistance rarely convinces sick people that they don't need the drugs.
"Unless you can tell them that there's an immediate downside for them
personally," Dr. Hay said, "the message just doesn't sink in."
Now, though, Dr. Hay can quote direct evidence of a downside. An
increasing number of studies, including his own work, suggest that even
a properly prescribed antibiotic can foster the growth of one or more
strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria for at least two to six months
inside the person taking the pills.
"Carrying" a microbe inside you that is resistant to drugs also means
that, during that time, you're likely to "share" the resistant bug with
family, co-workers and others in your path.
That particular strain may not make you sick. But if you find yourself
one day immune-suppressed after chemotherapy, cut open by a car accident
or surgery or especially vulnerable to bacterial pneumonia after a bad
flu, those resistant strains of bacteria living inside you increase the
odds that any infection will be hard - or even impossible - to beat.
In a study published in the July 2005 issue of The Journal of
Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Dr. Hay and nine colleagues solicited urine
samples from a broad cross-section of generally healthy people
throughout southwest England.
They then checked the samples for E. coli, a common intestinal bacterium
that can invade the urethra. Published surveys estimate that roughly 25
to 35 percent of women ages 20 to 40 in the United States have had a
urinary tract infection, and E. coli is the most frequent cause.
Of the 618 men and women from whom Dr. Hay and his colleagues were able
to isolate E. coli and also get extensive medical records, 39 percent
carried a bacterial strain that was resistant to one or more of the
first-line antibiotics commonly used to treat urinary infections.
More significantly, Dr. Hay said, a patient's likelihood of carrying a
resistant organism was doubled if the patient had taken "any antibiotic
for any reason within the previous two months, when compared with those
who had not taken an antibiotic."
The findings dovetail with results from other studies that found a
strong, though temporary, link between drug-resistant urinary tract
infections and antibiotics taken in the previous six months.
"A lot of women have had the experience of having a urinary infection
that doesn't seem to be treatable, or of going through more than one
drug," said Abigail A. Salyers, a microbiologist at the University of
Illinois and a co-author with Dixie D. Whitt of the new book "Revenge of
the Microbes: How Bacterial Resistance Is Undermining the Antibiotic
Miracle."
"Having to go through a number of drugs magnifies the time that you're
miserable," she said.
But the implication of the research goes beyond urinary infections.
Doctors are beginning to realize that any oral or injected antibiotic
they prescribe to fight a particular infection also cuts a wide swath in
bacterial neighborhoods throughout the body, mowing down microbes that
are susceptible and leaving room, temporarily at least, for resistant
bugs to colonize the empty real estate and thrive.
Bacteria differ in their ability to fend off antibiotics, and in the
methods they use. The most worrisome are those that quickly and easily
trade genetic material across species. A bacterium that was once
vulnerable to any one of several drugs can overnight become impervious
to all of them. It does this by picking up an extra loop of DNA -
essentially a highly portable genetic suitcase containing several
different resistance genes - from a passing microbe.
Public health officials used to assume that these sorts of superbugs
arose mostly in hospitals, where a variety of conditions - including a
concentration of seriously ill patients, open wounds, hands-on care and
the wide use of powerful antibiotics - made the buildings incubators of
drug resistance.
But just because hospitals are incubators doesn't mean that's where the
problems start or stay.

US States Fight EPA on
Greenhouse Gases
August 31, 2005
BOSTON - A group of US states Tuesday challenged a July court ruling
upholding the Environmental Protection Agency's refusal to regulate
greenhouse gas emission, a factor in global warming.
Led by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly, the five states and
the District of Columbia filed a petition asking the full US Court of
Appeals for the District of Columbia to review the July decision by a
panel of the court, which Reilly said "allowed (the EPA) to continue on
its path of inaction."
"This case deals with one of the most serious environmental threats of
our time," Reilly said in a statement. "Surely it warrants a decision by
the full court."
The group, which includes the attorneys general of Maine, New Mexico,
Oregon, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia, said the EPA could
not refuse to regulate greenhouse gases "simply because it opposes such
regulation on policy grounds."
Last month, however, two judges on a panel of three upheld the EPA's
refusal to do so, ruling the agency did not abuse its discretion. EPA
officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
In 1999, environmental groups filed a petition asking the agency to set
emission standards for greenhouse gases including carbon monoxide, a
factor in global warming, but the EPA denied the petition four years
later.
President Bush, who had made campaign promises to regulate greenhouse
gas emissions, in 2001 said they were not air pollutants that could be
regulated under the Clean Air Act. He also eschewed the Kyoto Protocol,
the greenhouse gas reduction plan adopted by more than 150 countries.
Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island are three of nine Northeastern
states currently working on a plan to reduce the level of greenhouse gas
emissions from power plants by capping carbon dioxide emissions.
