A gut disorder, thought to affect a small number of patients, is
becoming much more common, US researchers warn.
Rates of the disease rose so much in recent years that they now rival
better- known gut problems such as Crohn's disease.
But because eosinophilic esophagitis is relatively unheard of, patients
can wait years for a diagnosis.
The Cincinnati Hospital scientists' concerns are published in New
England Journal of Medicine.

Common Pain Reliever May Not Treat Knee Pain
Acetaminophen No Better Than Sugar Pills in Treating Knee Pain Caused
by Osteoarthritis
Aug. 11, 2004 -- Pain relievers containing acetaminophen are widely
recommended for the treatment of knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, but
new research suggests that acetaminophen may be no more effective than
sugar pills.
The findings call into question recommendations by a number of large
arthritis groups endorsing acetaminophen as a primary treatment for
osteoarthritis. Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol and
many other over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
A spokesman for one of those groups, the American College of
Rheumatology, says there have been few clinical trials comparing
acetaminophen to placebo for the relief of arthritis-related pain.
"This is the second study that I know of to show no benefit beyond
placebo, but the literature has been mixed, at best," Steven Abramson,
MD, tells WebMD. "It is clear, however, that this treatment does not
work in the majority of patients, and we can't assume that it is safe
for use long-term at the high doses used in this trial."
Placebo Effect
In the new study, slightly more than half of the 405 osteoarthritis
patients treated for six weeks with 4 grams a day of acetaminophen --
the equivalent of eight Extra Strength Tylenol -- reported significant
reductions in pain. But an almost identical percentage of patients
unknowingly taking the dummy pills reported the same thing, an effect
know as the placebo effect. The findings are published in the latest
issue of the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.

Columbus, and was eventually grown by both Native Americans and
colonists from Florida to Canada. Today cukes grow in a wide variety of
shapes and sizes, from the 1"-long ones sold as gherkins to mammoth
greenhouse varieties that can reach 20" or longer. Can be found in
grocery stores year round! Healthy and nutritionally sound.
The high water content in cukes make them a great diuretic for those of
you looking to lose weight and/or lower blood pressure. They also are
full of fiber making it perfect to keep your intestinal system moving
right along another great weight loss item as well as lowering blood
pressure.
Cukes are said to be great in helping in the treatment of arthritis
since it helps eliminate uric acid. Its liquid is also said to be a
rejuvenator and makes us feel and look youthful. Now who can't handle
that? If you want to try rejuvenating your skin either puree or slice a
cucumber and apply it on your face, let it sit for a half hour or so
then gently rinse off with warm mineral rich water (mineral rinse; 1
teaspoon liquid minerals to a couple quarts of warm filtered/purified
water). Cukes are touted to have the power to relax and alleviate
sunburn pain as well.

and Selenium. Of course vitamins weren't left out either they include;

slices in a sandwich or you can even juice it along with other
vegetables. Some people like them steamed like squash but they lose most

raw cucumbers, why, I don't know? Great fast food! My husband and
grandchildren have been caught eating them straight off the vine in the
garden!
This week will find me canning pickling cucumbers to eat year round.

Be truthful about vaccines or keep away from
my children

OK, I thought I would be able to write something calm and
balanced, drawing on both sides of the arguments for and against
childhood vaccinations. But I'm so furious at being LIED to time
after time by the government that nothing very calm comes to
mind.
I made sure my children's vaccinations did not include the
mercury- based preservative thiomersal, despite assurance from
the Glasgow public health doctor himself, on the phone, that it
was "perfectly safe".
Now, lo and behold, a new five-in-one injection is being spun as
"good news, it's mercury-free" - so that we don't ask any
questions about what else is in it or whether our babies should
be injected with five diseases in one day.
According to the Department of Health, this is not because
thiomersal isn't safe, it's about "reducing mercury in the
environment". What total horse manure! What about banning
mercury fillings for children then, as they do in Canada and
other enlightened countries - wouldn't that help reduce mercury
"in the environment" as well as in our children's brains and
bloodstreams?
Instead of mercury, the new vaccination contains aluminium and
formaldehyde, both known neurological toxins, held by some
experts as equally responsible for autism. Just thought you'd
like to know.
Formaldehyde - banned from cot mattresses because of a link to
cot death - is going to be injected directly into our babies?
bloodstreams at two, three and four months of age. I can't be
the only parent who thinks this might be risky.
Inventing new vaccine cocktails is mega business, of course.
Anyone heard of the patenting system? New vaccines are patented
for 10 or 15 years, during which time maximum money is made from
them. After that, the profits fall off. Unless, of course, you
can come up with a new version to patent.
The MMR vaccine was introduced in the late 1980s - after some
heavy sales pitching by the drug companies, no doubt - because
the patents had expired on the highly safe and successful single
Measles and Rubella injections in use in Britain for 20 years.
Don't believe me? Just wait a year or two. The MMR patent is due
to expire, but not to worry - the lovely new MMRV (which
includes added chickenpox protection) will probably be snapped
up by our gullible Department of Health instead.
Parents will be inundated with stories of "How Chickenpox Kills"
to help us make up our minds.
It may be the goal of the medical establishment, or at least the
vaccination manufacturers, to inoculate every illness out of
existence, but new diseases, new mutations keep emerging. Our
only true insurance policy is a fantastic immune system, and
that's just what vaccinations stand accused of threatening.
Autism? ME? Asthma? Allergies? All extremely rare 30 years ago.
You can find plenty of immunologists who will express concern at
the links to mass vaccination.
When you catch, say, rubella, the virus enters your respiratory
system first, so your immune system is on the alert before the
disease hits your bloodstream. Your temperature goes up as your
body fights back, finally your skin breaks out as the toxins are
thrown off. The vast majority of children recover and have a
lifelong immunity, passed on through the placenta and breast
milk to babies.
Vaccinating a mutated or dead version of a virus directly into
the bloodstream may not have the same effect. It may not be
thrown off in the same way, it may not protect you for as long,
it may not protect your baby.
Mumps used to be a childhood illness, but currently Strathclyde
is suffering from a teen epidemic, although all these teenagers
will have had MMR. Measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox can
all be far more serious if you contract them as an adult.
It is extraordinary to think that my parents´
generation were taken to measles parties as children, yet this
illness is now being touted as a "killer". One set of statistics
I unearthed on an internet trawl claimed a child under five has
a 0.01% chance of catching measles, a 0.3% chance of dying from
it, yet a 0.2% chance of being autistic as a result of vaccine
damage.
Yes, the Department of Health knows perfectly well that vaccines
can damage children, the possible side-effects come listed on
the box. But in the past, I have interviewed parents who have
told me with tears in their eyes and certainty in their hearts
that their children were fine before vaccination, yet their own
doctors, the health board and the government will not accept
their evidence.
I'm not anti-doctor, I'm not anti-medicine (usually). But I am
extremely anti-hogwash, propaganda, blackmail and
misinformation. How can any parent expect to be given both sides
of the argument from a GP paid a bonus to keep vaccination
levels up?
Great Outdoors May Ease ADHD Symptoms
September 1, 2004
NEW YORK - Parents may find some help for their children's ADHD symptoms
by going back to nature, new research suggests.
The study of 452 parents of children with attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder found that activities in "green" spaces such as
farms, parks and even backyards often seemed to temporarily quell the
children's symptoms. Children were more likely to show improved symptoms
in the hour after an outdoor, green activity than after activities
performed indoors or in concrete-and-steel settings, according to
parents' reports.
The findings, along with past research, have "exciting implications,"
according to the study authors, Drs. Frances E. Kuo and Andrea Farber
Taylor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
They speculate that daily doses of "green time," such as simply taking a
greenery-splashed route when walking to school, or playing on grass
instead of concrete, could aid in managing ADHD.
The researchers report their findings in the September issue of the
American Journal of Public Health.
Some past research has suggested that natural settings help battle
so-called attention fatigue in people without ADHD. This temporary
fatigue is thought to develop when people have to work to focus their
attention on a task, blocking out distractions from their surroundings;
the theory is that natural environments provide respite from this
effort, according to Kuo and Taylor.
Attention fatigue, though fleeting, shares characteristics with ADHD,
the researchers note. Some studies, mostly in urban areas, have
suggested that spending time in green spaces eases children's ADHD
symptoms.
To see whether green settings might have more widespread effects, Kuo
and Taylor conducted a national survey that asked parents to rate how
various after-school and weekend activities affected their children's
ability to focus, listen and follow instruction. The study included
families from urban, rural and suburban areas.
The researchers found that overall, activities in natural settings -
whether on a farm, in a backyard, or in a "green" neighborhood space -
seemed to have a calming effect on children's symptoms.
Indoor activities and those in "built" outdoor settings like downtown
areas also seemed to ease ADHD symptoms, but only when the child was
alone or with one friend. In contrast, green activities appeared to
improve symptoms even when a child was part of a large group.
Though more research is needed, the study authors conclude, the findings
suggest that green time could help many children, regardless of their
personal circumstances - and possibly reduce their need for medication.
And, they note, "among those children for whom medication is not an
option, a regular regime of green views and green time outdoors might
offer the only relief from symptoms available."
