Breakfast Eaters Have Less Bad Habits!
Researchers from the Department of Experimental Psychology,
University of Bristol, U.K., studied 127 people and compared information about
their diets with their satisfaction in life. What they reported in the
International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition is that people, "... who
consumed a cereal breakfast each day were less depressed, less emotionally
distressed and had lower levels of perceived stress than those who did not eat
breakfast each day."
Not only that, but cereal eaters were less likely to smoke or drink alcohol than
people who didn't eat breakfast cereal.

The Fruit That Dates Back To
Days Of Knights and Kings!
Since our fruit trees were frozen out this year I have to depend on
other sources for fresh fruits and this time of the year pears are
coming in at Oak Glen in Southern California, where we use to make a
fall trek every year for apples, pears and just a great outing?
These sweet juicy yellow, green and sometimes a musty brown fruit with a
rounded shape that becomes narrower towards the stalk and has kind of a
grainy texture that turns some people off. Pears offer a healthy
snack as well as a healthy ingredient in many recipes. Full of natural
nutritious fiber!
Pear History is interesting in that pears date back to the early Asian
history!
Pears are one of the world's oldest cultivated and beloved fruits. In
5,000 B.C., Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat became consumed by grafting
peaches, almonds, persimmons, pears and apples as a commercial venture.
In The Odyssey, the Greek poet laureate Homer lauds pears as a "gift of
the gods." Pomona, goddess of fruit, was a cherished member of the Roman
Pantheon and Roman farmers documented extensive pear growing and
grafting techniques. Thanks to their versatility and long storage life,
pears were a valuable and much-desired commodity among the trading
routes of the ancient world. Evident in the works of Renaissance
Masters, pears have long been an elegant still-life muse for artists. In
the 17th century a great flourishing of modern pear variety cultivation
began taking place in Europe. And in popular culture, the pear tree was
immortalized alongside a partridge in the 18th-century Christmas carol,
The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Early colonists brought the first pear trees to America's eastern
settlements where they thrived until crop blights proved too severe to
sustain widespread cultivation. Fortunately, the pear trees brought west
to Oregon and Washington by pioneers in the 1800's thrived in the unique
agricultural conditions found in the Pacific Northwest. Today's
Northwest pear varieties are the same or similar to those first
cultivated in France and Belgium where they were prized for their
delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life.
Pears are picked when they are almost ripe. The fruit will come off if
you lift the fruit vertically, signally time to pick. Pears ripen best
at room temperature. If you want too keep them a few days you have to
keep them in a dark cool place. There's no need to peel a pear... their
tender, edible skin is an additional and nutritional source of fiber. A
medium sized pear provides 4 grams of fiber, or 16% of the recommended
daily value. Always wash all fresh fruits and vegetables before serving.
More levulose - the sweetest of known natural sugars - is found in fresh
pears than any other fruit, which doesn't really sound like it's good
for dieting. Well, levulose is easily digested and plays a role in
energizing the metabolism thereby helping to bring about weight loss.
The pear is rich in the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium - 30% more than an apple - , Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium Not short changed in the vitamin department either
containing; Vitamin C, B-6, B-12, A, E, Rhiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin,
Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid.
There are many varieties of pears to choose from and should hit just
about any desire!
*Yellow Bartlett (Bart-let) U.S. Availablity in August through
January ripens to bright yellow, perfect for fresh eating. Very sweet
and juicy. Excellent for canning or cooking.
*Red Bartlett (Bart-let) Availablity in August through January
Bright red skin when fully ripe. Same flavor, texture and use as yellow
Bartletts.
* Green Anjou (On-ju) Availablity in October through June.
Abundant juice and sweet flavor when ripe. They do not change color as
they ripen.
* Red Anjou (On-ju) Availablity in October through May. Much the
same flavor and texture as green Anjous. Remains maroon red when ripe.
* Bosc (Bahsk) Availablity in August through April. Highly
aromatic flavorful pear. Dense flesh makes it ideal for baking and
cooking. They are brown and often russeted. They do not change color as
they ripen.
* Comice (Co-meece) Availablity in August through February. One
of the sweetest, juiciest varieties, and often are very large. An
elegant dessert pear that's excellent with cheese. Almost no color
change when ripe.
* Seckel (Seck'l) Availablity in August through February. Tiny
pears with ultra-sweet flavor, maroon and olive green in color.
Excellent choice for children's snacks, pickling, or as a garnish. No
color change when ripened.
* Forelle (For-ell) Availablity in September through February. A
smaller variety. Turns bright yellow with crimson freckling when ripe.
Sweet, very juicy.
Our favorite way of eating pears is fresh and raw but poached pears are
excellent as well and here is a relish recipe that is very tasty and

True Sugar-free Pear Relish
Great on toast, English muffins or as a relish for meats.
8 quarts of Pears
6 Onions
3 Red bell peppers
3 Green bell peppers
5 cups apple cider Vinegar
2 teaspoons Sea Salt
1 teaspoon Pickling spices
1 teaspoon Turmeric
Stevia: 8 Tablespoons. whole Stevia leaf powder or ? cup
white Stevia extract (powder) or to taste!
Grind vegetables. Combine with remaining ingredients; bring to a boil
and boil until thickened, about 30 minutes. Seal in pint jars. Makes
about 8 pints.

Know That Fiber Diets Can Reduce Water Retention?

Diets high in fiber have been proven to provide many benefits.
In addition to facilitating weight loss, high fiber diets are
often the solution to common health problems as well. Among
other health problems, one issue that can be eased by consuming
more fiber is water retention, or edema. Fiber diets have been
shown to play a direct role in controlling water retention.
Water retention, or edema, is an abnormal amount of fluid found
under the skin. Water retention is not itself a condition, it is
a symptom of what could be many conditions. Water retention
could occur for many different reasons, some of them more
serious than others.
Dehydration is one cause of water retention. Your body excretes
less water when you are dehydrated, which means that you could
become bloated. Constipation is another cause of water
retention. Infrequent bowel movements can cause your body to
absorb poison from partially digested foods; to dilute these
poisons, the body often retains excess fluid. Something else
that could be causing water retention is an excess intake of
dietary sodium. Finally, there are more serious conditions that
could be the cause of water retention, such as kidney, liver,
and heart failure.
Many of the conditions related to water retention are related to
your diet, so the first thing to do if you are experiencing
water retention is to make changes to your diet. One of the
things you could do is to consume less sodium. Another possible
dietary solution is to increase the amount of fiber that you
consume.
One of the major reasons for water retention is constipation -
in fact, it is the most common reason for water retention.
Because fiber is known to reduce constipation, fiber diets and
water retention often go hand in hand. You should investigate
different fiber diets before choosing one that will reduce water
retention, but typically people choose to consume a greater
amount of fiber.
If you want to find a fiber diet to reduce your water retention,
then you have many options available. You could simply consume
more of the many delicious fruits, vegetables, and grains that
are high in fiber. Another option would be to take fiber
supplements, which provide similar nutritional benefits.
Fiber diets can be the solution to numerous health problems, but
it is important to consult your doctor if your health has not
improved after making these dietary changes. Your doctor can
provide you with a diagnosis and treatment.

Covering Up Fluoride Dangers
August 13, 2007 - A joint meeting of two
ethics committees for the Centers for Disease Control has
received a detailed formal complaint alleging a series of
unethical activities by the CDC Oral Health Division and the CDC
Director. The complaint points to a quote by a highly placed CDC
official that the public health ethics code CDC espouses is not
being internally applied within CDC itself. The complaint
specifically questions why CDC's own data on disproportionate
harm from ingested fluoride in minority groups is not being
communicated to these communities, and points to new, state of
the art National Research Council information showing certain
groups to be especially susceptible to harm from fluoride.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Statements made by CDC and disturbing new
facts acknowledged in reports from key government agencies such
as the National Research Council and the U.S. Dept. of
Agriculture have now shown certain actions by the CDC Division
of Oral Health and CDC Director to be in violation of
fundamental principles of ethics. These unethical activities are
occurring in CDC?s efforts to promote water fluoridation, and
they demonstrate that the Oral Health Division has not in
practice applied the Ethics Code that CDC promotes throughout
the country. In failing to integrate and respond with integrity
to the ramifications of the new information coming from
reputable government sources known to CDC staff, the Oral Health
Division and CDC Director have directly negatively impacted U.S.
citizens who have been misled by CDC officials. Because CDC
assumes top-level authority for health information
dissemination, these unethical actions are serious and
egregious. Avoidance of embarrassment to the organization is an
insufficient and unethical reason not to disclose and
appropriately respond to information from its own agency and
other government agencies that contradicts CDC?s official
position that fluoridation is safe and effective in preventing
cavities. CDC?s actions have resulted in implementation of
faulty public health policy-making at the state level and by
water districts.
These following acts of commission and omission are serious
breaches of the public trust. On behalf of citizens who are
unaware of these breaches, we submit this complaint and request
a formal investigation, corrective action by the committees and
CDC, dissemination of revised information, and discipline of the
responsible parties. We ask the joint Ethics Committees for a
timely and public response.
Specifically, CDC has:
? Elected to omit vital information in its information
disseminated to the public concerning vulnerable population
groups that are particularly susceptible to harm from fluoride;
? Chosen to ignore its own data showing disproportionate harm by
dental fluorosis in minority populations and has not actively
provided this information to these groups;
? Demonstrated a severe ethical lapse in failing to
appropriately disseminate its own change in policy that parents
of infants be aware of the risk of dental fluorosis in their
children and may wish to use unfluoridated water to mix their
babies? powdered milk formula;
? Justified fluoridation in terms that mislead Americans into
confusing the fundamental concepts of concentration versus dose.
This had led citizens to believe that a low concentration of
fluoride in water cannot result in a harmful dose of the
chemical, regardless of volume of water consumed and other
sources of fluoride -- and in this context CDC has also failed
to appropriately disclose that fluoride can accumulate harmfully
in the body over time; and
? Misled the public concerning the results of studies about harm
from ingested fluoride.
