Sterner Injury Warnings Sought for Meds

WASHINGTON (AP) - The labels on Cipro and similar antibiotics should bear more serious warnings about a possible link to tendon injuries, petitioners told federal health officials Tuesday.

Between 1997 and 2005, the Food and Drug Administration received 262 reports of ruptured tendons in patients using drugs from the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen said in its petition to the FDA. The state of Illinois filed a similar petition last year and asked Tuesday that the two requests be combined.

The FDA will review the Public Citizen petition, agency spokeswoman Susan Cruzan said. She declined to say what action - if any - the agency would take in response to the earlier Illinois petition.

Staci Gouveia, a spokeswoman for Bayer HealthCare, maker of Cipro, declined to comment.

The labels on the entire class of drugs already warn doctors and patients of the risk of tendon problems. The FDA had manufacturers add that language following a 1996 Public Citizen petition. Public Citizen and the Illinois attorney general's office now worry the problem is worsening as use of the drugs increases.

Beyond the tendon ruptures, Public Citizen also cataloged roughly 260 cases each of tendinitis and other tendon disorders among users of the drugs. It is not clear how the drugs might cause the injuries.

The two petitioners want the drugs to bear so-called "black-box" warnings. That is the most severe warning the FDA can require. They also want manufacturers of the drugs to issue "Dear Doctor" letters warning of the possible risk and updating them of the requested label changes.

The office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said it became interested in the subject after receiving complaints from consumers who suffered tendon problems after taking another of the antibiotics, Levaquin.

Levaquin's label already "clearly states" tendon rupture can occur during or after treatment with the antibiotic, said Ambre Morley, a spokeswoman for Ortho-McNeil Inc., the Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) subsidiary that makes the drug.

Pomegranate Juice for Diabetics

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Pomegranates -- fruit popular in India and the Middle East -- are proven to have health benefits ranging from prostate cancer protection to osteoarthritis prevention. In other studies, pomegranates have been shown to keep your heart healthy, and now, new research out of Israel reveals pomegranate juice may have important health benefits for patients with diabetes.

Diabetic patients who drank 6 ounces of pomegranate juice a day for three months were at less risk for atherosclerosis -- which leads to the arteries thickening and hardening -- and accounts for 80 percent of all deaths among diabetics.

175 Toxic Chemicals Found in Conventional Cosmetics

(NewsTarget) Women who wear mainstream cosmetics products may be unknowingly applying as many as 175 different chemicals to their bodies every day, according to ChemicalSafeSkincare.co.uk.

Most popular beauty products contain a vast cocktail of chemicals, many of which have been linked to health problems such as cancer, hormone imbalances and skin irritation. A campaign group organized by manufacturers of natural products is calling for mainstream cosmetics makers to exhibit more information on their products' ingredients, as well as the side effects of such ingredients.

The campaign group says three cosmetics ingredients in particular can cause severe health problems. Parabens -- preserving agents used in many moisturizers and body creams -- have been linked to cancer and skin irritation. Sodium laureth and sulfate -- foaming agents used in shampoos -- can irritate the skin, and formaldehyde -- used in hand soap and shampoo -- can also act as a skin irritant.

"Media reports about the possible dangers of certain chemicals such as parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, phthalates and formaldehyde has made consumers more aware of what they are buying, and potentially more demanding of chemical safe alternatives," says Julia Mitchell, spokeswoman for ChemicalSafeSkincare.co.uk.

Lobbyists in Europe are pushing for manufacturers to make potential side effects of using mainstream cosmetics more widely available to the public.

Bayer Faces More Lawsuits Over GMO Rice

CHICAGO - Bayer CropScience has been hit with two more lawsuits claiming its genetically modified rice contaminated the US long grain rice supply, according to court documents and attorneys for the plaintiffs.

Bayer CropScience, a unit of Bayer AG, now faces a total of three lawsuits seeking damages to compensate farmers for falling rice prices.

The US Agriculture Department announced Aug. 18 that trace amounts of an unapproved GMO variety engineered by Bayer CropScience were found in rice storage bins in Arkansas and Missouri.

USDA said there was no health or environmental risk. But Japan has suspended imports of US long grain rice and the 25-nation European Union will allow into its stores only long grain rice that is certified free of the unapproved strain.

The latest lawsuit was filed on Tuesday morning in Lonoke County Courthouse in Lonoke, Arkansas, on behalf of 20 rice farmers, said Janet Keller, spokeswoman for the law firm of Hare, Wynn, Newell and Newton LLP, which is based in Birmingham, Alabama.

Arkansas is the top rice producing state in the United States and its farmers have just begun harvesting the crop.

The latest suit seeks US$275,000 per plaintiff plus punitive damages, Keller said.

"We fully anticipate more farmers to become involved," she said.

Bayer CropScience does not comment on pending litigation, said spokesman Greg Coffey.

Since the announcement of the contamination, rice futures at the Chicago Board of Trade have fallen about 85 cents per hundredweight, or about 9 percent, on worries that exports would be affected.

The two other lawsuits, each seeking class-action status, were filed on Monday against Bayer CropScience.

One lawsuit was brought by Lonnie and Linda Parson, rice farmers in Arkansas. It was filed by Emerson Poynter LLP in US District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas in Little Rock. Damages were not specified.

Another was brought by Geeridge Farm Inc. and George Watson and was filed by Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll in US District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

The tainting of rice supplies reminded many traders of an incident in the fall of 2000, when a biotech corn called StarLink, approved for use only as animal feed, was found in the food chain. This sparked a nationwide recall of taco shells and corn products foods from grocery shelves.

The incident lead to a class-action lawsuit, which was settled for US$110 million plus interest to farmers whose crops were tainted with StarLink corn, or who suffered from a drop in corn prices due to the controversy over gene-spliced StarLink corn.

The Cohen firm represented farmers in the StarLink case.

US officials are still investigating how the biotech rice ended up in the commercial supply.

The United States is expected to produce a rice crop this year valued at around US$1.9 billion.
