This has certainly been a fast moving week, which has required a lot of extra health guards. My 90 year old father came home with me and then came down with a virus less than 24 hours after getting off the plane, which isn't unusual for someone whose immune system isn't up to par and his isn't as he is just recovering from food poisoning from three weeks ago so it made him susceptible to bugs in the air... I am taking extra care just incase my immune system is compromised from such a hectic pace while on vacation... So far I feel healthy and bug free.... Tylenol WARNING!

It's been known for years that Tylenol can cause liver damage if it's used over a long period of time, but a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that it's much worse than we expected - healthy adults sustained liver damage after using the drug for as little as two weeks.

The study involved 106 people who took 4 grams of Tylenol a day for two weeks (the maximum daily dose recommended by the manufacturer). Some took the Tylenol alone, some received a placebo, while others took the drug combined with OxyContin, a powerful opioid painkiller.

The results showed that not one person who received the placebo had any signs of liver damage. However, those who took either the Tylenol alone or in combination with the other drug displayed abnormal liver test results, which indicated liver damage.

The finding led the study's co-author, Dr. Neil Kaplowitz of the University of Southern California to declare, "This drug has a rather narrow safety window," and he urged users not to exceed 4 grams of Tylenol (eight extra-strength tablets) a day. For heavy drinkers, that amount should not exceed 2 grams daily, he warned.

Most Common Drugs Given Today When Combined Are Creating Illness!

Most common drugs consumed today are blood pressure medications, which then calls for a cholesterol drug which then requires a water pill to remove the fluid build up from a slowed circulatory system that then requires a blood thinning drug... Antibiotic Fails to Win Panel's Support

WASHINGTON (AP) - Use of the antibiotic Factive should not be expanded to include treatment of acute sinus infections, federal health advisers recommended Tuesday.

Evidence suggests the risks associated with the antibiotic, made by Oscient Pharmaceuticals Corp. (OSCI), outweigh its benefits as a treatment for sinusitis, a Food and Drug Administration panel decided on a 11-2 vote. Studies have found serious skin reactions associated with use of the drug, also known as gemifloxacin.

The FDA approved the drug in 2003 to treat pneumonia and bronchitis. Oscient seeks expanded FDA approval to cover acute bacterial sinusitis as well.

In documents filed with the FDA, Oscient said its drug "represents an important additional therapeutic option for treatment" of acute bacterial sinusitis. Factive offers clear benefits and has a safety profile equivalent to other antibiotics, the Waltham, Mass., company said.

The FDA isn't required to follow the advice of its advisory committees but usually does.

Changes in Potomac Fish Raise Concerns About Pollutants - Male smallmouth bass caught from tributaries are found to have some female sex traits.

McLEAN, Va. (AP) - Some species of male fish in the Potomac River and its tributaries are developing female sexual traits at a frequency higher than scientists have seen before, raising concerns about pollutants in a waterway that provides drinking water for millions of people.

The "intersex fish," which produce immature eggs in their testes, were discovered in the Potomac watershed in 2003 and have been found in other parts of the country.

But the frequency that the U.S. Geological Survey found last year is much higher than what has been found elsewhere, USGS fish pathologist Vicki Blazer said.

In some Potomac tributaries, nearly all of the male smallmouth bass caught in last year's survey were the abnormal fish. In the Potomac itself, seven of 13 largemouth bass exhibited female characteristics, including three that were producing eggs.

Although the frequency discovered was surprisingly high, Blazer cautioned that the sample size was relatively small, with about 10 male and 10 female fish taken from each of eight locations in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Researchers were reluctant to remove large numbers of bass from the rivers because of conservation concerns, she said.

Female fish caught in the survey did not develop any unusual sex traits, though fish of both sexes exhibited lesions and other pollution-related problems, said Blazer, who coordinated the survey.

Smallmouth bass appear to be more susceptible to intersex development than largemouth bass, Blazer said.

Blazer said researchers are still waiting on data that would help them determine the water quality at the time the fish were caught, but preliminary data taken from the Potomac found a variety of chemical pollutants.

The likely cause of the changes is a combination of pollutants, scientists say.

Certain chemicals and pesticides are believed to stimulate estrogen production. Also, estrogen from birth control pills and human waste can make its way from sewage treatment plants to the waterways.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been studying the issue of endocrine disruptors since 1996 but does not issue guidelines to water treatment plants for allowable levels of estrogenic compounds.
