Reaping The Results of
Antibiotics Gone Wild!
Drug-Resistant E. Coli Spreads in England
Sep 12, 2005
WARWICK, England (AP) - Strains of E. coli bacteria that are resistant to most
types of antibiotics and may be spread in food are increasing rapidly in
England, the government's health agency said Monday.
The Health Protection Agency called for more research, saying there is no
reliable estimate of the number of cases involved and it is not certain how the
bug is transmitted.
E. coli are very common bacteria that normally live harmlessly in the gut, and
are one of the most common causes of urinary tract infections.
In a report to a health conference in Warwick, central England, the HPA said the
new E. coli strains produce an enzyme called Extended-Spectrum Beta Lactamase,
or ESBL, which makes them more resistant to antibiotics and therefore makes the
infections harder to treat. In many cases, only two oral antibiotics and a few
intravenous antibiotics remain effective.
"Voluntary national surveillance of blood poisoning (in England) caused by E.
coli from 1994 to 2004 indicates a recent increase in the numbers of infections
that are multi-resistant and therefore likely to be ESBL-producing strains,"
said Dr. Georgia Duckworth, who compiled the report.
"There is no comprehensive surveillance of urinary tract infections in the
community so there is no reliable estimate of the number of infections caused by
ESBL-producing E. coli strains in the community."

*Are you concerned about the
impact we all have on Mother Earth?
*Are you concerned about the health of your family?
*Are you stressed-out by the constant struggle to keep you home
clean?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you owe it to
yourself, your family and the ecology to read on...
You don't have to be a member of a conservation
society to care about the environment. It all starts with the
simple understanding that whatever goes down the drain
eventually ends up in the water supply. Whatever you spray in
the air is ingested by those around it. And that will
eventually have a pretty big impact on your home and family.
Consider this:
Each year more than 250,000 people are hospitalized from
exposure to household chemicals in cleaners!
Each year 3,000 will be admitted to intensive care!
Each year appprox. 100 will die!
Each year hundreds of thousands of Americans will be harmed
through contact with common household chemicals!
It is no wonder women that work from home have a
54% higher cancer rate than those who work outside the home.
Others who spend most of their day in the home, like children
and the elderly, are also getting sick.
Throughout my 30 year career in the medical
field, I have seen loss of life in many forms. Of the many
people I have cared for and interacted with, the ones that made
the most impact on me were the ones that were poisoned in one
way or another. Poisons come in many forms and can be inhaled,
ingested or absorbed through the skin.
One case that greatly impacted me was of a little
boy, who at 12 months of age wobbled to the dishwasher as his
mother was loading it. Naturally curious, this little boy stuck
his finger in the dishwashing detergent cup and then tasted the
wonderful smelling liquid. The toxins (poison) in the
dishwashing detergent ate through his esophagus and bronchus
causing a very traumatic, preventable early loss of life.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Kids who have the whole grains in
the morning do better on tests than those who eat sugary cereals, a new
study finds.
By Sally Squires
Want to give your children a head start in school this year? If you
normally serve them cold cereal for breakfast, instead consider serving
them oatmeal.
Numerous studies already link the first meal of the day to better
classroom performance. But recent findings suggest that what children
eat at breakfast may also shape how well they learn and the knowledge
they retain.
In the August edition of the journal Physiology and Behavior, Tufts
University psychologists report on two experiments they conducted on 60
schoolchildren.
For breakfast one day, the researchers served the youngsters Quaker
oatmeal made with milk and then gave them a battery of classroom tests.
A week later, the students ate Cap'n Crunch cereal with milk and then
were tested. During a third week, they skipped breakfast and only took
the tests.
Simply eating breakfast produced better test results than missing the
morning meal - findings that echo results of numerous other studies. But
the researchers also discovered that boys and girls performed better on
tests when they ate oatmeal than when they had Cap'n Crunch. (The
research was funded by Quaker Oats, maker of both products used in the
study.)
After eating a bowl of oatmeal, boys and girls ages 9 to 11 showed
enhanced spatial memory, a skill that helps with drawing and doing
puzzles. Spatial memory can help not only with art, but also with
geography as well as some technical skills used in math and science.
Girls, but not boys, also displayed improved short-term memory after
eating oatmeal.
Children ages 6 to 8 listened better after eating oatmeal than after a
breakfast of Cap'n Crunch. And, like their older counterparts, they also
scored higher on spatial memory. Younger girls also showed improvements
in short-term memory similar to that seen in their older counterparts.
So what gives oatmeal its punch? The researchers suggest that the
mixture of protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates may account for the
differences in test performance. "Oatmeal may provide a slower and more
sustained energy source and consequently result in cognitive enhancement
compared to low-fiber, high-glycemic, ready-to-eat cereal," the team
concluded, noting that the results suggest "the importance of what
children consume for breakfast before school."
The findings "reinforce the recent move toward whole grains," said Holly
A. Taylor, professor of psychology at Tufts University and a coauthor of
the study. "Since the brain uses glucose, and the source of glucose is
diet, having a sustained-release food for breakfast is going to have
beneficial effects on memory and attention."
Here are other benefits and tips for eating a healthy breakfast:
* Not just for the young. A University of Toronto study of 22 healthy
men and women, ages 61 to 79, published in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition in 2001 found that breakfast improved memory. And
researchers at the University of Wales, Swansea, have reported that
adults who ate a breakfast of low-glycemic foods such as whole-grain
unsweetened cereal, bread or eggs performed better on memory tests in
the morning than they did after eating sugary, high-glycemic fare such
as sweetened cereals or doughnuts.
* Think outside the cereal box. Cheese, whole-grain crackers and fruit
provide a good breakfast. So do smoothies made with nonfat yogurt and
fruit. Or slather peanut butter on a slice of whole-grain bread, top
with banana slices and drink a glass of skim milk or low-fat soy milk
for a nutritionally complete breakfast.
* Eat breakfast to keep your waistline whittled. Breakfast doesn't
necessarily help with weight loss, but it appears to be important for
long-term weight maintenance. Successful losers - members of the
National Weight Control Registry - report that breakfast is a meal they
rarely miss. (The registry has several thousand registrants, who, on the
average, have lost about 60 pounds and kept it off for roughly five
years.) Researchers say eating breakfast may help control appetite for
the day.
Eating breakfast has helped Arlene Rimer of Toronto maintain a 150-pound
weight loss. Now she's hoping that her example will rub off on her
children. She wrote in an e-mail recently: "I am trying to teach my
children to take the few minutes to eat a healthy breakfast at home
before they leave for school."

The Fruit That Played A
Role In Knights Of Old!

These pieces of healthy gold will soon be appearing
on trees for the picking and prices will lower in the supermarkets
making it the season's healthy choice!
These sweet juicy yellow, green and sometimes a musty brown fruit with a
rounded shape that becomes narrower towards the stalk and has kind of a
grainy texture that turns some people off. Pears offer a healthy snack
as well as a healthy ingredient in many recipes. Full of natural
nutritious fiber!
Pear History is interesting in that pears date back to the early Asian
history!
Pears are one of the world's oldest cultivated and beloved fruits. In
5,000 B.C., Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat became consumed by grafting
peaches, almonds, persimmons, pears and apples as a commercial venture.
In The Odyssey, the Greek poet laureate Homer lauds pears as a "gift of
the gods." Pomona, goddess of fruit, was a cherished member of the Roman
Pantheon and Roman farmers documented extensive pear growing and
grafting techniques. Thanks to their versatility and long storage life,
pears were a valuable and much-desired commodity among the trading
routes of the ancient world. Evident in the works of Renaissance
Masters, pears have long been an elegant still-life muse for artists. In
the 17th century a great flourishing of modern pear variety cultivation
began taking place in Europe. And in popular culture, the pear tree was
immortalized alongside a partridge in the 18th-century Christmas carol,
The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Early colonists brought the first pear trees to America's eastern
settlements where they thrived until crop blights proved too severe to
sustain widespread cultivation. Fortunately, the pear trees brought west
to Oregon and Washington by pioneers in the 1800's thrived in the unique
agricultural conditions found in the Pacific Northwest. Today's
Northwest pear varieties are the same or similar to those first
cultivated in France and Belgium where they were prized for their
delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life.
Pears are picked when they are almost ripe. The fruit will come off if
you lift the fruit vertically, signally time to pick. Pears ripen best
at room temperature. If you want too keep them a few days you have to
keep them in a dark cool place. There's no need to peel a pear... their
tender, edible skin is an additional and nutritional source of fiber. A
medium sized pear provides 4 grams of fiber, or 16% of the recommended
daily value. Always wash all fresh fruits and vegetables before serving.
More levulose - the sweetest of known natural sugars - is found in fresh
pears than any other fruit, which doesn't really sound like it's good
for dieting. Well, levulose is easily digested and plays a role in
energizing the metabolism thereby helping to bring about weight loss.
The pear is rich in the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium - 30% more than an apple - , Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium Not short changed in the vitamin department either
containing; Vitamin C, B-6, B-12, A, E, Rhiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin,
Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid.
There are many varieties of pears to choose from and should hit just
about any desire!

Mental and Physical Acuity Increases With
Ginseng!
The July 2005 issue of the Journal of
Psychopharmacology, States that "Performance may be enhanced and mental
fatigue may be avoided by using moderate doses of ginseng during
sustained mental activity." And they added, "This effect may be related
to the acute gluco-regulatory properties of the extract." Subjects in
both of the ginseng groups had significant reductions in blood sugar in
each of the post-treatment measurements compared to the placebo group.
Oriental ginseng is grown in China and Korea, and has a reputation
throughout Asia as the "king of all tonics." It's also known as "panax
ginseng," and this was the type of ginseng used in a recent study
conducted by researchers at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon
Tyne, UK.
A battery of tests was devised to evaluate the effects of ginseng intake
on 30 healthy young adults. Using computers, each subject took a
10-minute math test. This was followed by the intervention: Either 400
mg of standardized panax ginseng extract, or 200 mg of the same extract
or a placebo. Testing resumed one hour later with six additional
10-minute tests. All of the subjects participated in three days of
testing.
Oriental ginseng is just one of three ginseng types. The other two are
American ginseng and Siberian ginseng. The latter, however, is not a
true ginseng, but still produces many of the same beneficial effects.
Red and white ginsengs are both of the Oriental variety. When the root
is naturally dried it's white, but when processed a certain way the root
turns red.
Testing scores in the ginseng group were also higher, and mental fatigue
in this group was significantly reduced. The highest test scores were
posted by the 200 mg ginseng group.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
High levels of the
toxic mineral have been found in some products made of soft vinyl.
By Shari Roan, LA Times Staff Writer
Along with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and juice boxes, some
schoolchildren may be carrying something unexpected - and potentially
hazardous - in their lunchboxes this fall.
A study by an Oakland-based environmental group found harmful levels of
lead in some lunchboxes made of soft vinyl. The Center for Environmental
Health filed lawsuits late last month against several lunchbox
manufacturers and various retailers who sell the products.
The environmental group found that 27 lunchboxes - one-quarter of the
products tested - had high levels of lead when tested with an at-home
detection kit. The group then sent those 27 products to an independent
laboratory for more rigorous testing; that study found that 17 of the
lunchboxes contained lead in excess of federal safety standards.
One lunchbox, made by Targus Group International Inc. and featuring the
children's character Angela Anaconda, was found to contain more than 90
times the legal limit for lead in paint in children's products. The
Center for Environmental Health has advised parents to avoid vinyl
lunchboxes or to purchase a home test kit to check for lead. Such kits
sell for about $3 and can be found on the Internet and in hardware
stores.
Michael V. Ward, vice president and general counsel for Targus, said
last week that the Anaheim-based company had only recently become aware
of the potential hazard and was checking with its supplier to determine
if the product was tested for lead.
"I'm not certain it does or doesn't contain lead," Ward said of the
lunchboxes.
Lara Cushing, research director for the Center for Environmental Health,
said the study found the lead was not contained within the vinyl
material itself but rather on the surface of the lunchboxes.
"It's not bound up in the plastic," she said. "It's sloughing off. It
can come off on your hand. It can rub off on your food."
The Oakland environmental group in recent years has reported on studies
that found unsafe levels of lead in some imported Mexican candies and in
children's jewelry. The private, nonprofit group specializes in
identifying hazardous sources of lead in the environment.
Lead is considered unsafe at any level. Even small amounts can build up
in the body and cause lifelong problems, according to the California
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch.
Fetuses and children younger than 6 are at greatest risk for lead
poisoning because their brains and nervous systems are still forming.
Lead poisoning can result in anemia and problems in learning and
behavior. Very high levels can damage the nervous system, kidneys and
major organs and can even result in seizures or death. Children with
very high levels require treatments to remove the lead. For children
with lower levels, authorities recommend finding the source of the lead
and removing it to prevent further exposure.
"The more we study lead, the more effects we find at smaller and smaller
doses," said Dr. Herbert L. Needleman, a professor of psychiatry and
pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh.
The major sources of lead poisoning in the United States have been
lead-based paint, which was restricted in 1978, and leaded gasoline,
which was phased out in the early 1990s. However, lead is still found in
paint manufactured before 1978; in soil and dust (particularly next to
busy roads or factories); in some imported or handmade pottery and
tableware; and in imported home remedies and cosmetics.
Last year California's attorney general sued dozens of companies that
make or sell imported candies containing lead. Manufacturers looking for
low-cost materials may either knowingly or inadvertently use products
that contain hazardous amounts of accessible lead, said Dr. Bruce P.
Lanphear, a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital
Medical Center. Typically, testing for lead requires an extra step in
the manufacturing process that some companies may choose to skip.
"It's to be expected, depending on how vigilant we are, that lead from a
variety of sources would creep into other products," said Lanphear.
Officials for the Consumer Product Safety Commission said last week that
the agency was investigating the Center for Environmental Health's
findings on lead in lunchboxes. A spokesperson for the California
Department of Health Services also said the agency was aware of the
lunchbox study and is looking into the findings.
Other lunchboxes found high in lead featured characters such as
Superman, Tweety Bird, the Powerpuff Girls and Hamtaro. The Center for
Environmental Health has displayed photos of the lunchboxes on its
website, www.cehca.org
