I am beside myself. I told you about my stubborn 88 year-old father and
I told you I would report if there was any progress. He is doing
remarkably well. He got up the last three mornings saying he is a new
man, as his legs were pain free and they are no longer purplish,
swollen, weepy and full of pain. His heart palpitations no longer
exist, he's able to sleep through the night. He is able to urinate
freely, which he had not been able to do for a year or so, due to the
prostate cancer.
He started the

would happen that fast for others. We have his blood sugar totally
normal, stopped his Tegretol that he takes for his neuralgia and he isn't experiencing
any more pain in the face, which has bothered him now for more than two
years sometimes to the point of taking heavy pain medication. That
result I'm sure is from the minerals nourishing the body, as a lot of
pain comes from the lack of minerals in the system... He stopped,
without my recommendation, his
diabetic pill, cholesterol and blood pressure drug, with a normal blood
pressure and blood sugars so far... His heart palpitations that he was
experiencing are no longer there, he says...I'll let you
know if this continues...
Now do you see why I'm feeling so beside myself. Family tend to
not take family members serious, and I had decided he would go to his
grave never listening to me and still seeing me as "daddy's girl," but
that has all changed. He says he can hardly wait to get home and tell
his friends and the rest of the family, which will happen on Sunday. I
feel for all who have to listen to him rave as he tends to overdo it big
time!!!

When the Vision Goes, the Hallucinations Begin

One day a few years ago, Doris Stowens saw the monsters from Maurice
Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" stomping into her bedroom. Then the
creatures morphed into traditional Thai dancers with long brass
fingernails, whose furious dance took them from the floor to the walls
to the ceiling.
Although shocked to witness such a spectacle, Ms. Stowens, 85, was aware
that she was having hallucinations, and she was certain that they had
something to do with the fact that she suffered from the eye disease
macular degeneration.
"I knew instantly that something was going on between my brain and my
eyes," she said.
Ms. Stowens says that ever since she developed partial vision loss, she
has been seeing pink walls and early American quilts floating through
the blind spots in her eyes several times each week.
In fact, Ms. Stowens's hallucinations are a result of Charles Bonnet
syndrome, a strange but relatively common disorder found in people who
have vision problems. Because the overwhelming majority of people with
vision problems are more than 70 years old, the syndrome, named after
its 18th-century Swiss discoverer, is mostly found among the elderly.
And because older people are more susceptible to cognitive
deterioration, which can include hallucinations or delusions, Charles
Bonnet (pronounced bon-NAY) is easily misdiagnosed as mental illness.
Many patients who have it never consult a doctor, out of fear that they
will be labeled mentally ill.
"It is not a rare disorder," said Dr. V. S. Ramachandran, a neurologist
at the University of California at San Diego, who has written about the
syndrome. "It's quite common. It's just that people don't want to talk
about it when they have it."
Researchers estimate that 10 to 15 percent of people whose eyesight is
worse than 20/60 develop the disorder. Any eye disease that causes blind
spots or low vision can be the source, including cataracts, glaucoma,
diabetic retinopathy and, most commonly, macular degeneration. The
hallucinations can vary from simple patches of color or patterns to
lifelike images of people or landscapes to phantasms straight out of
dreams. The hallucinations are usually brief and nonthreatening, and
people who have the syndrome usually understand that what they are
seeing is not real.
Nancy Johnson, a 72-year-old retired schoolteacher from San Diego whose
left eye was removed because of cancerous tumors, says she is not
bothered by the images she sees.
"I see little tiny geometric shapes that all fit together," Ms. Johnson
said. "Like doodles in the margin of a notebook. It's sort of
interesting and distracting, but it's not fearful."
But the experience can also be frightening. Ms. Stowens, for example,
said the visions of monsters terrified her.
"I couldn't even speak, my heart was beating so fast," she said.
Many patients are relieved to hear that what they are suffering from is
simply a vision problem, said Dr. William O'Connell, a low-vision
specialist at the State University of New York College of Optometry who
has seen scores of patients with Charles Bonnet syndrome.
"I've had patients tell me, 'I thought I might be getting a brain
tumor,' '' he said. "Or 'I thought I might be having a stroke,' or 'I
thought I might have Alzheimer's.' "
Experts say that medication offers no relief to Charles Bonnet patients,
and that in fact there is little that they can do to stop the
hallucinations, besides blinking, brightening the light in a room or
making other changes in the environment.
In some ways, researchers say, the hallucinations that define the
syndrome are similar to the phenomenon of phantom limbs, where patients
still vividly feel limbs that have been amputated, or phantom hearing,
where a person hears music or other sounds while going deaf. In all
three cases, the perceptions are caused by a loss of the sensory
information that normally flows unceasingly into the brain.
In the case of sight, the primary visual cortex is responsible for
taking in information, and also for forming remembered or imagined
images. This dual function, Dr. Ramachandran and other experts say,
suggests that normal vision is in fact a fusion of incoming sensory
information with internally generated sensory input, the brain filling
in the visual field with what it is used to seeing or expects to see. If
you expect the person sitting next to you to be wearing a blue shirt,
for example, you might, in a quick sideways glance, mistakenly perceive
a red shirt as blue. A more direct gaze allows for more external
information to correct the misperception.
"In a sense, we are all hallucinating all the time," Dr. Ramachandran
said. "What we call normal vision is our selecting the hallucination
that best fits reality."
With extensive vision loss, less external information is available to
adjust and guide the brain's tendency to fill in sensory gaps. The
results may be Thai dancers or monsters from a children's book.
"The most interesting thing to me," Ms. Stowens said of her syndrome,
"is that this brain of mine keeps telling me things I don't want to
know."

It isn't just a flower and hasn't been for centuries but lost it's

Roses are members of the apple family, and like their relative, they

big seed pod that form on rose canes after it blossoms. Some roses,
especially Rugosa roses, form rose hips that are the size of a quarter!
Wild Roses are found in various places from forests to canyons, logged
wastelands and thickets. There are nine species of Roses, all of which
have edible fruits and flowers, though they are not necessarily tasty.
Then there are a multitude of roses found at your local neighborhood
nursery. There isn't a lacking of roses as it is a most popular flower!
But what about eating it?
Rose hips is the apple of the rose and also a great food! Of course rose
petals make a great looking healthy addition to salads!
Rose Hips, The Healer
Rosehips were found within a body of an English woman buried almost 2000
years ago. Seems the English have enjoyed roses and rosehips since the
beginning of recorded history.
Rosehips have saved many generations from scurvy due to its high Vitamin
C content. Many fine foods have been created using these rose hips.
Probably the most popular being rose hip vinegar but jelly and syrups
are healthy, unique and found in unique stores and homes.
Rose Hips contain more vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, and iron than
oranges, and sixty times more vitamin C than lemons. Rosehips
also contain a high amount of carotenoids and catchins, isoquercitrin
all from the polyphenol family. These natural occurring chemicals
have great antioxidant activities. Polyphenols also enhance the immune
system, assists in weight loss, lowers cholesterol, and beats up cancer
cells and free radicals that disease the body. Rosehips also contain
maltic acid. Women suffering from Fibromyalgia are almost always found

suggested we all drink a cup of rosehip tea daily. There seems to be
something to that rosy advice.
Rose Hips is used by many to treat infections of the bladder and kidney,
diarrhea, skin problems, colds and flu, sore throat, fatigue,
inflammation, stress, and nervousness. It has also been used to treat
arteriosclerosis, circulatory insufficiencies, contagious disease, and
PMS.
More cosmetic companies are adding rosehip seed oil to their lotions and
facial products. Rose hip seed oil helps to regenerate the skin cells
due to its high content of essential unsaturated fatty acids, oleic
(15-20%), linoleic (44-50%) and linolenic (30-35%). Our body cannot
reproduce these fatty acids, so it has to come from an outside source
and very few foods contain sufficient quantities to help us. Rosehip oil
helps to fade age spots and reduce the signs of aging. It also helps to
reduce scars as well as scars caused by acne.
Here is a really neat tasty Rose Hips recipe that I haven't tried yet
but may have by the time you read this as I intend to make them soon!
Peachy Rosehips Muffins
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup fresh or frozen peaches (or canned)
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup dried seedless rosehips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease twelve 2 3/4" muffin pan cups, or
line them with paper baking cups. In large mixing bowl, combine first
six ingredients. In another bowl, mash peaches with fork, add rosehips
to the mashed peaches, let sit about 10 minutes, then stir in remaining
ingredients. Add peach mixture to flour mixture and stir just until
ingredients are moistened. Spoon the batter into muffin cups. Bake 15 to
18 minutes or until tops are golden.
Taken in the recommended doses, Rose Hips is generally safe; however,
taking vitamin C in high doses can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. If
you have kidney stones, consult your physician before using Rose Hips.
Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with
severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

Study Links Animal Bacteria to Crohn's
Disease

LONDON - A bacterium that causes intestinal illness in cattle
and sheep could also be responsible for Crohn's disease,
researchers said.
Crohn's disease is an inflammation in the small intestine that
affects about a million people worldwide. Scientists are not
sure what causes it but they suspect it is due to a reaction by
the body's immune system to a virus or bacterium.
Dr Saleh Naser and researchers at the University of Central
Florida in Orlando believe it is due to a bacterium called MAP
which is found in cattle, sheep and goats suffering from an
illness called Paratuberculosis or Johne's disease.
"We discovered the bacteria in the blood of Crohn's patients.
This is the first time anyone has done that," Naser said in an
interview.
"There is strong evidence that this bacteria may be responsible
for Crohn's disease."
Previous studies have concentrated on looking for MAP in the
tissue of Crohn's patients and the outcome has been mixed,
according to Naser.
MAP was found in the blood of patients with Crohn's disease but
not in healthy people.
"The blood is a sterile environment so the presence of this
bacteria in the blood indicates this disease might be systemic,
which means it may start in the intestine and ultimately it may
infiltrate into other organs," he said.
Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, weight loss and
fever are the most common symptoms of the illness.
Naser, who reported the finding in The Lancet medical journal,
believes people can be exposed to the bacteria but they do not
develop the illness unless they have a genetic susceptibility to
it.
In a commentary in the journal, Professor Warwick Selby of the
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Newtown, Australia, said
although the research may fall short of proving that MAP is one
of the causes of the illness, it raises many important
questions.
"The findings now need to be replicated in other laboratories.
Whatever one's view, MAP cannot continue to be ignored in
Crohn's disease," he said.
SINGAPORE 9/20/2004- A soil-borne bacterial infection called melioidosis
has killed 24 people in Singapore this year, making it more deadly than
SARS or bird flu, the health ministry said.
The illness, also known as Whitmore's Disease, is listed by the U.S.
government as a potential biological weapon but Singapore government
officials said there was no sign it had been spread intentionally.
The bacteria enter the body when bruised skin comes into direct contact
with contaminated soil or water, leading to abscesses and blood
poisoning. Victims experience fever, coughing and shortness of breath.
In some cases they develop pneumonia.
The death rate hit 40 percent between January and July this year, up
from 10 percent last year, the ministry said. Up to early September, 79
people have been diagnosed with the disease.
That death rate was three times that of Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS), which killed 13 percent of sufferers, K. Satkunanantham,
the ministry's director of medical services, told a medical conference.
The high number of fatalities had led the ministry to investigate
whether the disease was being caused intentionally, as the bacteria are
a potential biological weapon, Satkunanantham said. It found no sign
that the bacteria had been manufactured.
Satkunanantham said that more than 80 percent of the victims who died
had pre-existing health problems, such as diabetes, hypertension and
kidney failure.
There is no vaccine for melioidosis but the illness can be treated with
antibiotics if detected early. Diagnosis requires testing of a saliva
sample.
Melioidosis is common in Southeast Asia, with cases concentrated in the
area from Vietnam to Myanmar and Malaysia, the U.S. government's Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says on its Web site (www.cdc.gov
). It is also endemic in northern Australia.
The CDC says sheep, goats, horses, pigs, cattle, dogs and cats can also
catch the bacteria and spread a similar disease to humans.
