Drug-Resistant Staph Is Here
Aug. 31, 2006 - It may already be too late to bring the rapidly
spreading drug-resistant staph bug known as MRSA under control.
That's the gloomy warning from a review article and editorial -- both by
leading infectious disease experts -- in the Sept. 2 issue of The
Lancet.
MRSA is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The bacteria are
resistant to several important antibiotics. At least for now, some other
antibiotic drugs still kill it.
But MRSA already is the most common skin infection in U.S. cities.
Worldwide, anywhere from 2 million to 53 million people are carriers.
Staph in general, and MRSA strains in particular, are very tricky
bacteria. It's easy for them to gain drug resistance. Staph bugs often
infect the skin, but can infect other areas of the body as well.
The bug was first seen in hospitals. But new MRSA strains have arisen in
the general community and, while on the loose, have become more easily
transmissible -- and, in some places, more virulent.
Now these strains are going into hospitals, where they wreak havoc on
vulnerable people -- and even on health care workers.
"The MRSA situation in hospitals, which still remains out of control in
many countries, could potentially become explosive," warn Hajo Grundmann,
MD, of the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the
Environment, and colleagues, in The Lancet article.
An editorial accompanying the Grundmann article offers little solace.
""If we are going to act, we should do it now, before what is currently
sporadic illness ... becomes epidemic, and commonly used antibiotics
become useless," urges microbiologist Ian M. Gould, PhD, of Aberdeen
Royal Infirmary, U.K.

The immune system requires certain antioxidant
vitamins AND minerals to be strong and bounce
illness and disease off of it, keeping you healthy when working
properly
One of the strongest antioxidants and Immune System Builder is
vitamin C but along with that strength comes attacks from the drug
industry. Those attacks appear in the form of a well planted news
blurbs stating Vitamin C doesn't do (whatever they are attacking
that day) as previously reported? Those blurbs are planted to try
and discourage you from believing you can heal without chemical drug
intervention... That's not street drug industry either, but our own
huge pharmaceutical industry that is supposed to be there to protect
us and claims to want what's best for us who have given those
reports to the news people and without telling them or you that
there are different types of Vitamin C. What they also are not
telling you is that synthetic Vitamin C was used in that research
that was reported. They know people are too lazy to research their
studies and find the truth. These reports are nothing more than
thinly veiled attempts to discredit vitamins and supplements in
general.
Let's not let that happen!
So I shall counter their claims by informing you and explaining the
different types of Vitamin C that can help you to discern what is
best for you and the next time you hear or read an article knocking
vitamin C or any antioxidant you will understand the good from the
not so good;
* ASCORBIC ACID: The standard form of vitamin C. Calcium
ascorbate is one of the salt forms of the nutrient (as opposed to
the acid form). It is usually synthetic, as are other forms, such as
sodium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, etc. It tends to be bitter,
while ascorbic acid is sour.
* NATURAL vs. SYNTHETIC: The synthetic vitamin C molecule is
almost chemically identical to natural forms yet our body does not
recognize it as natural and will not absorb or utilize it and will
go directly to the liver and kidneys for filtering out or creating
both organs into toxic dumps. So the chances of high doses of C
(like 1000 milligram capsules) being all-natural are low and will
require you do extensive questioning to determine natural versus
chemical.
* ROSE HIPS: This natural form of vitamin C is very
expensive, so nobody sells it exclusively (to my knowledge).
Manufacturers put a little in with the synthetic source for
marketing purposes. In its natural state, meaning mixed by Mother
Nature with attending bioflavonoid fractions, there's little
question (to those who treat with it regularly) that less
amount of rose hips is needed for an equivalent biological action.
* ACEROLA VITAMIN C: This is another natural form (from a
tropical shrub). Like rose hips, acerola is commonly mixed with
synthetic and you will need to pay close attention to the label to
determine that bit of adulteration.
* VITAMIN C COMPLEX: This is somewhat non-specific, and can
be any group of
related items, such as multiple salts of C (calcium, magnesium,
potassium, sodium ascorbates, for example). Read carefully to
ascertain natural versus mixed.
* ESTER C: There is some issue concerning Ester C, touted as
stronger than the standard form. I don't think it's any stronger,
and neither did Dr. Linus Pauling, though you'll see commercials
that indicate otherwise but has more healing power it is less likely
to cause upset their stomach, which can happen in large doses of
Vitamin C.
* FAT SOLUBLE VITAMIN C: The fat-soluble form of vitamin C is
called ascorbyl palmitate, and is better absorbed and stored by the
body than water-soluble forms. (All the other forms of C are
water-soluble.) Ascorbyl palmitate is harder to find, and more
expensive.
"Some people are less tolerant to vitamin C in the acid form. For
them, switching to the salt form (sodium ascorbate, calcium
ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, etc.) often permits far higher
tolerance."
High doses of Vitamin C - 1500 mg to 4000 mg's daily - is required
to kick the immune system into high gear and when that happens may
cause very loose stools.
If your urine isn't very yellow, you are not getting enough of the
nutrients!
For overall immune system builders a total antioxidant is best!
Antioxidants known to be body builders are; Vitamins A, C, E and
selenium. Of course the best place to get these are from foods but
if you are not getting your daily quota of 7 to 9 one-half cup
servings of organic fruits and vegetables you must supplement!

Birth-Control Patch
Label Warns of Risk

WASHINGTON (AP) - Women were warned Wednesday that their risk of
blood clots in the legs and lungs may be higher if they use the
birth-control patch instead of the pill.
The Food and Drug Administration said it updated the label on
the Ortho Evra birth-control patch to reflect the results of one
study that found women using the patch faced twice the risk of
clots than did women on the pill. However, a second study found
no difference in risk between the two forms of birth control.
"Even though the results of the two studies are conflicting, the
results of the second epidemiology study support FDA's concerns
regarding the potential for Ortho Evra use to increase the risk
of blood clots in some women," the FDA said in a notice
published on its Web site.
The risk of clots in women using either the patch or pill is
small. Even if it doubled for those on the patch, perhaps just
six women out of 10,000 would develop clots in any given year,
said Dr. Daniel Shames, of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation
and Research.
Initial results of the two studies were made public in February
by the patch's manufacturer, Ortho Women's Health & Urology. The
Raritan, N.J.-based company is owned by Johnson & Johnson. (JNJ)
Last year an investigation by The Associated Press, citing
federal death and injury reports, found higher rates of blood
clots in women using the patch.
The FDA recommended that women with concerns about clots and use
of the patch talk to their doctors.
"We cannot conclude there is in fact a greater risk," Shames
said. "We are however concerned enough about this information
and we think it is important enough information that it should
be given to consumers and to health-care providers so they can
make better choices."
In November, the FDA updated the label on Ortho Evra to alert
women that using the patch exposes them to about 60 percent more
estrogen than using birth-control pills.
Johnson & Johnson previously has said clots remains rare and
that they have been reported as a potential risk of all hormonal
contraceptives.
Ortho Women's Health & Urology said in a statement that data
will continue to be collected for both studies. Shames said the
studies, which rely on insurance claims information on upward of
500,000 women, would last another 18 to 24 months.
The company also said it would continue to provide new
information to the FDA.
The company reported in filings made last month that Ortho Evra
sales have declined significantly following the previous label
revision and a spate of media coverage of the clot issue. Since
the patch went on sale in 2002, more than 4 million women have
used it.
The company also disclosed that approximately 500 people have
filed lawsuits or made claims related to injuries they allegedly
suffered from the Ortho Evra patch.
The investigation by The Associated Press found that patch users
die and suffer blood clots at a rate three times higher than
women taking the pill. About a dozen women died in 2004 from
blood clots believed linked to use of the patch, the AP
reported. Dozens more suffered strokes and other clot-linked
problems.
Health officials warn that women who smoke should not use the
patch, since smoking increases the risk of stroke and heart
attack. Researchers believe estrogen may promote coagulation of
the blood.

Common Houseplants
May Trigger Allergies

NEW YORK - Houseplants could be the source of many an allergy
sufferer's misery, a study from Belgium suggests.
Symptoms of up to 20 percent of people with allergic rhinitis,
meaning runny nose and sneezing, may be due to exposure to these
plants, Dr. Olivier Michel of the Free University of Brussels
told Reuters Health.
It's estimated that up to 40 percent of people in the Western
world suffer from allergic rhinitis, he and his colleagues point
out in a report in the journal Allergy. A 1985 study suggested
that the weeping fig tree, a type of ficus tree that exudes
latex, could be a source of inhaled allergens. Decorative plants
are becoming increasingly common in public spaces, workplaces
and homes.
Michel and his team tested 59 allergic rhinitis sufferers and a
control group of 15 healthy individuals for sensitization to
ficus, yucca, ivy, palm tree and other common ornamental plants
using a skin prick test.
Seventy-eight percent of the allergic rhinitis patients were
sensitized to at least one of the plants. No one in the control
group was sensitized to the test plants.
Sensitization doesn't necessarily mean a person's allergic
symptoms are due to a particular substance, Michel noted in an
interview, adding that a person must then see if symptoms
disappear if exposure to the substance stops.
For two patients in the study who were allergic to ficus,
removing the plant from their environment stopped their symptoms
completely.
Additional studies are needed to confirm the findings, the
researchers say. Nevertheless, says Michel, makers of allergy
testing products should begin producing tests for identifying
sensitization to common houseplants such as ficus.
