EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++

Okay is anyone reading this ezine? I didn't have one single person draw my attention to the fact that I moved friday's ezine into October, a month ahead of time! Usually someone point out my stupid mistakes but not this one, so are you reading or not?

We're off to Phoenix today with my father to go down "memory lane". We lived around Phoenix, Peoria and Glendale most of my early childhood and my dad broke a lot of desert for farming that is now filled with houses and businesses so we are going down memory lane and see what now occupies the places we lived. Should be fun... If you call or email don't expect an answer until Monday... Have a great rest of the weekend!

Oh yes, my father says he's a new man and can't stop talking about how great he feels in comparison to what he felt when he came from Oklahoma to visit... Alternative medicine has a way of doing that to people. His eight prescriptions now lay in the drawer catching dust... His blood pressure is running 118/72 to 119/70 and that's without his poison statin drug. His blood sugars seem normal although I don't have a glucometer here to test it, that we will have definite readings on when he returns to his doctor next month, but I expect them to be normal since many many others taking DiaB and minerals are. He says he sleeps like a baby as his legs no longer keep him awake from pain and itching, they are pink and look great and he doesn't have to get up five or six times a night to urinate as the prostate has shrunk so much. I'm fully aware that the prostate cancer is still there and has been for more than eight years and  he didn't tell us until a few months ago when my sister took him to ER for falling and she was with him when the doctor told him, but at least he's comfortable with it and I do not expect that miracle to happen. It's amazing to me, I continue to see miraculous things happen with herbs and minerals weekly!!!  He says he hasn't had a single episode of gastric problems since we started and he stopped his Nexium a week ago, he says before if he didn't take it every single day he had awful stomach pains for hours after eating. His heart is singing along smooth and regular without his Lanoxin and other heart meds. I do not recommend anyone stop your medications without someone monitoring your vitals and being close by to make sure withdrawals aren't life threatening...

TB Set to Be Global Scourge Again, Models Predict
September 22, 2004

WASHINGTON - Super drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis are at the tipping point of a global epidemic, and only small changes are needed to help them spread quickly, U.S. researchers predicted.

Two separate studies show that multiple-drug-resistant TB, which can only be cured with a carefully monitored cocktail of drugs taken for months on end, could easily start spreading more commonly.
The reports, to be published in Monday's issue of the journal Nature Medicine, coincide with another report published last week saying the World Health Organization's efforts to control multi-drug-resistant TB were not working as well as hoped.

If all the reports are true, it means that TB could make a dangerous new resurgence, and with new strains that are even harder to fight than the old ones.

TB infects an estimated 8.7 million people a year and kills 2 million a year despite widespread control efforts.

The disease is spread by airborne bacteria that settle into the lungs and cause long-term infection. Many people who are infected do not become ill themselves but can spread it.

Tough hygiene and treatment campaigns beat TB back in places such as Europe and North America, but AIDS, with its attacks on the immune system, helped TB make a comeback in the 1990s.

MAKING GAINS

TB is making special gains in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.

And TB strains resistant to several antibiotics are becoming increasingly prevalent, with "hot spots" in Russia, Eastern Europe, South Africa, China and Israel.

WHO's main strategy to control it is called "directly observed treatment, short course" or DOTS, which involves using trained health professionals to watch patients take their long courses of antibiotics.

Even a little carelessness in taking antibiotics can help TB mutate into drug-resistant forms.

But some scientists had found that the mutant strains, while difficult to eradicate in the host patients, were not easily spread to other people.

So health professionals in many countries focus on treating those patients with TB easily treated with drugs.

The two papers in Nature Medicine say this could lead to disaster.

Even if just a few TB strains develop the ability to spread, they will eventually take over and dominate, say Sally Blower and Tom Chou of the University of California, Los Angeles and Megan Murray and Ted Cohen of the Harvard School of Public Health.

They developed separate mathematical models that show it would be easy for multi-drug-resistant TB to outcompete other strains and spread.

"We should not be reassured by studies that suggest mutated TB is less transmissible," said Murray.

"It is imperative that strategies to control tuberculosis include measures to treat individuals with MDR (multi-drug-resistant) disease," Cohen added in a statement.

"It can be done. Our model shows why making this treatment available is absolutely necessary to avoid otherwise inevitable MDR-TB epidemics." REUTERS NEWS SERVICE

LENA'S COMMENT: This is brought about by the mutation of bacteria due to the over use and abuse of antibiotics! I beg of you to not use antibiotic unless absolutely necessary, which isn't very often. There is a non-mutating antibiotic that treats both bacterial and viral infections. Read Amazing Silver Water Miracle Click Here

Cooked Foods Healthy or Not?

You've heard that cooking removes vitamins from a lot of foods, but did you know it could also effect the minerals in the food?

The European Journal of Cancer Prevention reports that the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Modena University in Italy, decided to make a dinner to see what would happen to the nutritional value of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit.

None of the foods they cooked -- beef, filet of sole, cauliflower and vegetable soup -- had any folic acid left after preparation. But the fish still had 94 percent of its original retinol levels, even after it was grilled.

Copper levels in cauliflower dropped 37 percent as a result of cooking, but almost all the foods retained more than 90 percent of their iron content.

And while orange juice retained its vitamin C levels, fruit salad lost its vitamin C content very rapidly.

Is That Hysterectomy Necessary?

According to a study published in the August 2004 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the rate of hysterectomies performed each year is on the rise. In 2002 Dr. Ernst Bartsich, a New York gynecologist, attributed the increase caused by his colleagues, who continue to withhold information about the aftereffects of hysterectomy and ovary removal. He added something to the effect that if women knew the truth, they wouldn't agree to these surgeries as readily.

And I would like to add that if women aren't given all the information they need to decide, how can it be informed consent?

Gynecologists have traditionally downplayed the risks involved with the operation itself and its many lasting consequences. Surgical side effects include hot flashes, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, generalized fatigue, stress and urge incontinence, masculinization, insomnia, bowel dysfunction, mood swings, just to mention a few. More importantly, the removal of the uterus and the ovaries can lead to loss of sexual desire, diminished orgasmic response and pain with intercourse.

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP

~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

With More Night Light Comes A Greater Risk of Leukemia

Experts are evaluating the possible link between childhood leukemia and too much light at night.

More and more children are diagnosed with leukemia, following a noticeable spike happening in those younger than 5 years old. For them, the risk of developing this cancer increased by more than 50 percent during 1950-2000.

Why leukemia strikes children is not known. However, experts think environmental factors may be the source of the 20th century rise. If they are right, then it may be possible to identify causes -- like light at night -- and prevent the disease. Researchers point to light as one of these factors because modern people are exposed to more light than in the past. Light at night disrupts the natural hours of darkness our bodies need to produce proper levels of melatonin.

Sleep -- also known as natural circadian rhythm -- is an important part of overall health because of this hormone, which protects DNA from damage. Experts say low melatonin has been known to instigate and promote cancer growth.

Several studies have concluded that people who work at night are more likely to develop breast cancer. Also, experts note that blind people, who are not vulnerable to light at night, have a lower incidence of cancer.

Researchers plan to look at the association between biological clocks and light receptors in the human eye, and how sleep patterns, alertness, mood, physical strength and blood pressure are affected. They also will examine another possible cause of childhood leukemia -- magnetic fields, which also may decrease melatonin levels.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Another herb to entice and give your food great flavor but also a great natural health builder!

Fenugreek herb aka Greek hay!

Not something you would eat by itself but used as seasoning with a huge benefit in doing so. Grows as and stallwart 2 to 3 foot tall annual herb with light green leaves and small white flowers. The seed pods contain 10 to 20 small, flat, yellow-brown, pungent, aromatic seeds to a pod. The seeds have a strong aroma and somewhat bitter taste, variously described as similar to celery, maple syrup, or burnt sugar. One of the spices the Egyptians used for embalming, and the Greeks and Romans used it for cattle fodder (animal feed hence the Latin name foenum graecum meaning Greek hay).
Historically a native to southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Western Asia, is cultivated from Western Europe to China for the aromatic seeds, and is still grown for fodder in parts of Europe and northern Africa. It was grown extensively in the imperial gardens of Charlemagne. It is necessary ingredient in Indian curries. Both seeds and leaves are used!

Store in a cool, dry place for maximum of 6 months. Uncooked fenugreek seeds have an unpleasant, bitter taste, so the seeds are usually roasted and ground before use to decrease the bitterness. The seeds are very hard, and difficult to grind, a mortar and pestle works best. Seed extract is used in imitation vanilla, butterscotch and rum flavorings, and is the main flavoring in imitation maple syrup. Also used in breads in Egypt and Ethiopia. Ground seeds and/or leaves, can give a nice lift to some bland vegetarian dishes and especially flavorful with lamb. Also good in marinades. Generally, a nice unusual flavor to experiment with to achieve some different effects. Use very young shoots with only a few leaves and some watercress for a nice salad addition. Fenugreek seeds are also used in candy, baked goods, ice cream, chewing gum and soft drinks. The seeds can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute. Once used as a yellow dye. The leaves are dried and used as an insect repellent in grain storage units.

In various areas of North Africa the seeds (ground into a paste) were traditionally eaten by women to gain weight, in combination with sugar and olive oil. The seeds are still used for weight gain in Libya and other areas. They are also an important source of diosgenin, which is widely used in the production of steroids (probably accounts for the weight gain ability), sex hormones, oral contraceptives and veterinary medicines.

Rich in vitamins and minerals, and because it is a seed and a legume, it is high in protein, which makes it very useful in vegetarian diets.

Those Vitamins are A, B12, B6, E, D, C, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta & gamma & delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folic Acid and Pantothenic Acid. Also rich in minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

Known Health Benefits:
Lowers blood sugar: Fenugreek has important implications for diabetics. Studies have shown that it helps stabilize blood sugar control in people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. But if you're currently on medication for diabetes, inform your physician if you decide to try fenugreek. It is so effective; its hypoglycemic effect could be dangerous if taken suddenly and in high doses. But when monitored by a physician, it could be part of your natural management of blood sugar.

Lowers "bad" cholesterol: Fenugreek is apparently able to sort out the good from the bad when it comes to cholesterol. 25 g a day was consumed for a 24 week-study, HDL (good) cholesterol showed a 10 percent total increase, while LDL (bad) levels steadily decreased throughout the testing period.

Aids digestion: Fenugreek stimulates the pancreas and can aid in digestion. However, too much can cause diarrhea -- something to watch out for and back off on your dose if it occurs.

The medicinal properties are in their highest concentration in the seeds, which have a bitter taste that improves when toasted.

Comes in powder, capsules and gum forms or in combination with other medicinal herbs.

If you've been thinking about branching out in the kitchen, you might want to try some Middle Eastern or North African dishes that are heavily spiced with fenugreek.

The Pharmacist Who Says No to Drugs
Armon Neel tells patients how to save money and lives
By Bill Hogan
September 2004

Ruby Gifford has come to see Armon B. Neel Jr. out of fear and perhaps desperation. Gifford, 86, hasn't been feeling well lately, and the list of symptoms that have prompted her to come to Neel's office in Griffin, Ga., might mark her as a hypochondriac in the eyes of many doctors. The problems run from dizzy spells and falls to osteoarthritis and back pain, from uncontrolled high blood pressure and erratic pulse rates to anxiety and depression. Then there are the skin rashes, hives and other allergic symptoms that seem to have come out of nowhere.

Gifford's 60-year-old daughter has brought her to the Wednesday morning appointment, and the two wait anxiously in Neel's conference room, where he meets with patients. Neel, however, isn't a doctor. He's a pharmacist whose specialty is determining whether people are taking the right medications?and in the right doses?for what ails them. Neel, 66, hasn't worked behind a prescription counter since the early 1970s, when he gave up dispensing drugs for a career that would often put him on a collision course with the doctors who prescribe them.

"If I could find out what's causing all these allergies," Gifford begins. (Her name has been changed in this story to protect her privacy.)

Neel asks to see the blood pressure log she's been keeping at his request, along with all the medications she's been taking. Gifford reaches down, produces a freezer-size Ziploc bag that's bulging with prescription drugs, and places it on the table. Then comes another Ziploc bag, this one full of over-the-counter medications.

Neel quizzes Gifford about the prescription drugs, one by one. "What about that?" he asks. "How did that one do?"

He then asks Gifford about Ultracet, a pain medication that she's taking. "I never have headaches," she says. "My aches are all from falls."

"Tell me about the falls," Neel says. "Tell me how long it was after taking this pill that it happened."

Neel gently guides Gifford through the entire inventory. He explains that Aldactone, the blood pressure medication she's been taking, isn't the drug of choice in her case and may in fact be responsible for some of her other health problems. As he looks through Gifford's records, he sees that her doctor, in attempts to control her hypertension, has tried four different ACE inhibitors, two beta-blockers and two alpha-blockers. Nothing has worked, and Gifford has had allergic reactions to all of them. Neel seems stupefied.

"There wasn't a need to go to the second one after the first one did you harm," he says. "They're in the same family. You need a calcium channel blocker instead."

Next, Neel zeroes in on Mobic, the NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that Gifford's doctor has prescribed for her osteoarthritis. "There are certain drugs you just don't give old people," he explains, and NSAIDs are among them. It turns out that the doctor has ordered yet another NSAID, in the form of Voltaren eye drops. "There's a newer product that's better than this," Neel says.

Gifford seems relieved but at the same time disturbed. "I don't want to go back to this doctor," she says. "She never checked anything before she gave it to me."

Neel promises to put everything in a written report by the end of the week. "Some of these things," he says, pointing to all the medications spread out on the table, "we might just chuck in the trash can."

    ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT

Biotech Grass Breeding Raises Concerns

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Pollen from genetically engineered grass floated more than 12 miles from experimental plots and bred with conventional plants, raising concerns that the biotechnology industry can't control the "gene flow" of its creations.

Researchers with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that genetic material from grass genetically modified to resist a popular weed killer had travelled much further than expected in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.

The finding will add to the debate surrounding the development of genetically modified plants, their containment and the potential effects of releasing them into the environment.

The study was published online Tuesday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

More immediately, the study will play a role in a decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture whether the biotech grass, developed from the creeping bentgrass variety prized by golf course greenskeepers, will be allowed to be grown for commercial purposes.

Two companies, Scotts and Monsanto Corp., are hoping to sell the genetically engineered grass to golf courses worldwide. The engineered grass still thrives when sprayed with Monsanto's Roundup Ready herbicide, allowing workers to more effeciently eradicate weeds

Lidia S. Watrud, an EPA scientist who led the study, said the findings are significant because they showed that bentgrass pollen - which is alive only three hours - "can move a lot farther than we had anticipated."

Watrud's team tracked the flow of pollen from eight quarantined fields where 400 acres of the Roundup-resistant grass was experimentally grown in the past two years. Monsanto and Scotts have taken all but a few acres of the Roundup Ready bentgrass fields out of production until federal approval is received.

The scientists collected seeds from natural grasses and potted "sentinel" plants downwind from the fields and grew them to the seedling stage. Lab tests found the genes in the potted plants up to 13 miles away and in wild plants nearly nine miles away from the fields.

Most of the gene flow occurred within 1.25 miles in the direction of the prevailing wind.

Anne Fairbrother, an agency researcher involved in the study, said the results were unexpected. Based on previous studies, the researchers thought that the short-lived pollen would travel only about half a mile. "We were surprised at how far the pollen traveled, and how many times pollenizations occurred," she said.

The researchers declined to say whether growing Roundup-resistant bentgrass would be beneficial or detrimental to the environment. "But we've been keeping the U.S. Department of Agriculture informed so that they can use this information in their evaluation of this crop," Watrud said.

Fairbrother and Watrud said more studies are needed in the next few years of plant populations in the area to determine whether the engineered gene has spread or gone extinct.
