Ageing, Positive Or Negative?
That will depend on what you believe! The
Journal of the American Geriatric Society reports on a Harvard Medical School
study of the way 47 elderly men walked. As part of the study, researchers
offered the men either positive or negative messages about the meaning of old
age. Some were told they were in great shape, while others got nothing but bad
news.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ Healthy Holiday Table Fare Year Round! As I enjoyed my orangy vegetable I thought about how this food is so ignored by most… Usually eaten by so many people only on Thanksgiving, and that's a shame, since they're among one of the most nutritious of vegetables. If you don't eat sweet potatoes very often, or only at holiday time when they're smothered in melted marshmallow goop and baked until they're unrecognizable, you're missing out on one of nature's truly perfect foods. Low in calories, high in fiber, great for diabetics people who are carbohydrate sensitive, and packed with minerals - rich in Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium while rich with vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, DFE, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid and tastes great! Their bright color is key to their high beta-carotene content, and containing the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. A sweet potato really isn't a potato; it is part of the sprawling vine called morning glory. The sausage-shaped tubers are a bit potato-like, but taper to pointed ends unlike potatoes. Skin is smooth and can be white, red, golden or purple/black. Having sweet purple, white, yellow or deep orange flesh. In 1932, when the sweet potato was considered a poor man's food, Americans consumed 30 pounds each per year. Now, it's closer to 4 pounds, though the tuber has become more appealing and growing because it's a favorite of Oprah Winfrey and television chef Emeril Lagasse. It is also a hormone smoothing veggie for women in menopause, post-menopause or perimenopausal years. Rich in beta-carotene means a disease fighter as well!!! A study conducted by the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland gave 21 HIV-positive people 180 mg (300,000 IU) of beta-carotene every day for four weeks, resulting in several indicators of their "helper" T cell activity increasing significantly over the people who were given a look-alike-but-inactive placebo, whose indicators dropped. "Helper" T cells are the primary target of the HIV virus, and the body's ability to fight infections diminishes as their levels drop. A study conducted by John Hopkins University researchers linked high levels of beta-carotene with a lower incidence of lung cancer, which kills approximately 145,000 Americans every year. A great reason to eat sweet potato. At least 70 research studies have found an increased risk of cancer in people who don't eat enough produce rich in carotenoids. Since the sweet potato is very rich in beta carotene how better to get a health benefit? There are two
basic types of sweet potatoes: Moist: (orange fleshed) tends to be plumper and its skin a little redder. The sweeter orange-fleshed sweet potato varieties dominate the U.S. market. often called "yams," but this is a misnomer: The true yam aka "botanical family Dioscoreaceae" is a large - as much as 100 pounds - root vegetable grown in Africa and Asia and rarely seen in the western world. However, over time common usage has made the term "yams" acceptable when referring to sweet potatoes. Dry: (yellow or purple-fleshed). Some people prefer the starchier yellow-fleshed types, a little narrower with a tan skin, when they aren't side by side, it's pretty difficult to judge the difference. In most instances, you can assume you're getting orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. If you are actively seeking the yellow-fleshed, you should ask the produce manager. The Okinawan sweet potato, grown year round in Hawaii has light skin and lavender flesh and is of Chinese and Japanese origin. The potato is not well known or easy to get on the mainland, except in specialty or ethnic markets on the West Coast. Something I experienced this spring when I was in Hawaii and loved them… A bit of history; In 1514, Peter Martyr named nine varieties that grew in Honduras. It was taken to Spain about 1500 and several kinds were cultivated there by the middle of the 16th century, including red, purple, and pale or "white" varieties. Cultivation of sweet potatoes was tried unsuccessfully in Belgium in 1576. John Gerarde of London, claimed that in 1597 he grew the plant in England (probably without much success) and that it was known in India, Barbary, and other hot regions. Early Spanish explorers are believed to have taken the sweet potato to the Philippines and East Indies, from which it was soon carried to India, China, and Malaya by Portuguese voyagers. The original introductions from America into the Pacific and Far East were so unobtrusive that the origin of the plant was long overlooked, many believing it native to southern and southeastern Asia. Sweet potatoes are sold throughout the year, but are most abundant in their harvest season of fall and early winter, found on sale in the U.S. around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sweet potatoes are also sold canned or frozen. The canned potatoes are usually packed in heavy syrup--"candied"--although some processors also pack them in water. Canned sweet potatoes are significantly lower in beta-carotene, vitamin C, and B vitamins than fresh ones. Selecting sweet potatoes; Choose heavy, similar-sized potatoes if you plan to cook them whole, so that the cooking time will be uniform. Choose potatoes that are smooth, hard, and free of bruises or decay, even if cut away, a decayed, shriveled brown/black spot may have already imparted an unpleasant flavor to the entire potato. My family's favorite ways of eating sweet potatoes are; Sliced about 1/8" thick and round like silver dollars, Sautéed in butter until tender, with just a hint of brown sugar to enhance not overpower the flavor. Second favorite is baked either whole or sliced; Heat oven to 375 degrees. Peel and cut into thick round slices or quarter potato. In a baggie put ½ teaspoon Stevia or 1 teaspoon brown sugar, pinch of ground allspice, pinch of cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon sea salt, ¼ teaspoon Turmeric, shake until well mixed. Spray slices with virgin olive oil then put into bag with spices and shake until covered with mixture. Layer one layer on cookie sheet that has been sprayed with olive oil. Put into oven and bake about 20 minutes then turn potatoes over and bake another 20 to 25 minutes until done and slightly browned. There are as many ways of eating sweet potatoes as there are people so use your imagination and eat for health… Enjoy your newfound mineral and vitamin rich food! Lena

Are You Expecting To Be Healed Or
Not?
© By Lena Sanchez In my twenty years plus as a Medical Office Nurse I found A couple of common threads among the rising amounts of diseases and illness. But I do not find it being looked at for real and nobody is alerting the public to the dangers. So let me try! Those mitigating facts I believe are; people have bought into Pharmaceutical company's advertising blitzes "See your doctor or ER" for every little problem. Other reason appears to be the "pass-the-buck syndrome"! If a doctor says "do it", then the responsibility for the problem lays elsewhere and not on your shoulder! Of course both attitudes can get a person into big health problems sooner or later! Here are a few things that can happen to those people when "passing-the-buck" or listen to "see your doctor" for every ache and pain. Here is how and why those trips to ER or the doctor's office are often risky! 1) Clot-Drug Mistakes Kill Hundreds! About 1,500 Americans may die each year because health-care providers gave them the wrong doses of clot-busting medications at the wrong times. That's according to a study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. They reviewed data on eight studies involving about 50,000 patients to see how common errors were in administering life-saving, anti-clotting medications. These drugs, called tPA, streptokinase and Retavase, are standard treatments for patients arriving in the emergency room suffering from a heart attack or stroke. They need to be given during a specific window of time after symptoms begin. If given too late, they can be dangerous and may cause hemorrhaging. The study found tPA errors were the highest, with a rate of 12 percent to 16 percent. There was an 8 percent to 11 percent rate of errors for patients given streptokinase, and a 5 percent error rate among those receiving Retavase. The death rate was 7 percent to 8 percent even when the drugs were given properly, and doubled up to 20% when administered incorrectly, researchers report. Errors occurred more often in women than men. Researchers reached the conclusion that this may be because women may need less than the standard dose, yet few hospitals have altered that dosage. Lead researcher Dr. Christopher Cannon says these findings suggest that 22,500 patients across the country get the wrong doses of the clot-dissolving medications each year, with an estimated 1,500 persons dying annually from such mistakes. 2) Drug Induced Malnutrition! Some commonly prescribed drugs for simple illness cause severe nutritional deficiencies all by themselves Malnutrition is being documented, in study after study, as the number one cause for most illnesses. And since obesity rate is above 60 percent it would appear that malnutrition does not arrive from starvation. Nearly every man made drug takes a heavy toll in unwanted, and dangerous side effects, of which malnutrition is the most common denominator DIURETICS for high blood pressure wash potassium, magnesium, sodium, zinc and vitamin B2 right out of your body along with the water leading to severe muscle wasting and pains along with depression. Even more alarming is the report From the National Institute in November 1998 states that, diuretics also increase the risk of kidney cancer, as found by the researchers that conducted the studies. ESTROGEN replacement drugs, such as Premarin, can leave you deficient in all the B complex, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc. ANTACIDS steal from your tissues important life altering vitamins A and B1, folic acid, calcium, copper, iron and phosphorus. ANTIBIOTICS deplete numerous vitamins; B2, C, D, niacin, folic acid, biotin and the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. SHAMPOOS and CONDITIONERS that are chemical based have several chemicals but a couple that has drawn attention is DEA and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or simply SLS which are absorbed into your blood stream and make changes in our hormonal systems, create free-radicals that in turn sets up the body to have cancer & other diseases. CHLORINE in our municipal water systems have been proven to cause cancers of all kinds, with bathing in chlorinated water being worse than drinking chlorinated water. Bottled water still has chlorine so don't feel that you are completely safe just because you drink bottled water. Read Water ANTI-INFLAMMITORIES (NSAIDS) stops the production of good prostaglandins, which promote healing of the joints and cartilage. Without those prostaglandins doing their job it causes further damage to your joints and muscles CHOLESTEROL LOWERING DRUGS wash out the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As it washes out the cholesterol it deplete numerous vitamins -- B2, C, D, niacin, folic acid, biotin and minerals -- calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, etc. Then comes the champion killer! CORTISONE! Cortisone is a steroid hormone that's produced naturally by your adrenal glands. It helps your body store glucose, an energy-food source. It helps your body regulate its use of fats, salts and blood and helps the body deal with stress, among other things. But along came the synthetic form of cortisone called prednisone. Doctors prescribe cortisone (comes with many names) because it is a very powerful drug for reducing swelling. Never mind that it doesn't help the underlying problem that causes the swelling and pain. It can be taken as a pill or injected directly into joints, making our fast food society happy that they don't have to do anything but sit there or take the magic little pill or get that magic injection that stops the pain right now. Good luck on getting well and maintaining health! What does cortisone/Prednisone do for you? First it masks the pain and does nothing to treat the cause of the pain. Second, it begins wearing away and eroding the naturally smooth bone surfaces that glide against each other at joints, that sets you up for bigger problems later. (Simple terminology) Giving your body cortisone sends your adrenal gland wrong signals, making it wonder what to do next and over prolonged time will shut it down from that confusion. Then come the mood swings, the weight gain caused from a voracious appetite created by the cortisone/Prednisone. Kidneys are really struggling to keep up the filtration needed to washout the chemicals; the liver is overworked and may end up with Hepatitis or cirrhosis. That isn't the end of the risks: There are depletions created when taking the following medications! 1. Oral Contraceptives Can Result in a Deficiency of folate -detrimental to a healthy fetus should a gal become pregnant, which happens in 5% to 10% of cases! 2. Antacids like Rolaids or Maalox can weaken bones by hindering their mineral uptake. 3. Aspirin taken on a regular basis -- say, by an arthritis or heart patient -- can deplete the body of iron! 4. The antidepressant drug Prozac (fluoxetine) can decrease the appetite in some while increasing the appetite in others and depleting the system of many nutrients! 5. Large doses of zinc can interfere with the absorption of Iron, Copper and Calcium! If you are taking some medications your food then becomes a health risk! Taking grapefruit juice with the antihistamine Allegra (fexofenadine) decreases its absorption! Taking grapefruit juice with the blood-pressure-lowering drug Plendil (felodipine) increases its absorption! When taking an antibiotic you should never drink colas! If you use the heart drug Coumadin (warfarin), tell your doctor if you eat a lot of green leafy vegetables or take fish oil supplements as they can cause the blood thinner to over react! Did you get the point here? Your medications may be creating more illness for you and in most instances do not medicate the problem, only mask it and create more problems. Do some research and try natural treatments Treat the area of your body that is causing the problem not masking it. It is important that you practice proper diet, exercise, supplementing with minerals, vitamins and herbs that can create a healthy body! Stop being lazy and letting someone else determine whether you are healthy or ill.
THREE MOST IMPORTANT CHEMICAL-FREE STEPS TO
^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ Nuclear Meltdown May Have Caused Cancers Oct 5, 2006 By ROBERT JABLON LOS ANGELES (AP) - A 1959 nuclear reactor meltdown at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory may have caused hundreds of cases of cancer in the community, and chemicals threaten to contaminate ground and water, according to a report released Thursday. The report by an independent advisory panel estimated it was likely that radiation released during the meltdown caused about 260 cases of cancer within a 60-square-mile area around the reactor. The lab's former owner, Rocketdyne, has said for years that no significant radiation was released. But the independent advisory panel said the incident released nearly 459 times more radiation than a similar one at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island in 1979. "People have been asking for 20 years what was the impact of the meltdown, and now they will at least have an approximation of how many people may have been hurt," said Dan Hirsch, co-chairman of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory Advisory Panel. The panel of experts from around the country was formed by legislators in the early 1990s who responded to residents' calls for independent health studies of the site. The 4.5-square-mile site about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles was used for nuclear research for four decades beginning in the 1940s. Rocket engines also were tested there. A Rocketdyne spokesman said the company, now known as Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, no longer owns the lab site and referred questions to the current owner, Boeing Co. Blythe Jameson, spokeswoman for Boeing, disputed that there was a threat, calling the site safe. The Energy Department, Boeing and the state have been involved in efforts to decontaminate the site. The state has estimated that more than 1.73 million gallons of toxic trichloroethylene was dumped on the grounds and that 500,000 gallons have saturated the bedrock beneath the lab. The panel concluded local soil and groundwater also may have been contaminated. The rocket fuel additive perchlorate has been found in a well, but Boeing has disputed assertions it came from the lab. Long-term exposure to high levels of perchlorate can cause thyroid problems. In 1999, the federal Agencies for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry concluded people in the area were not being exposed to levels of chemicals or radiation that impact their health, and three other studies failed to find any evidence of increased cancer rates, Jameson said. Boeing, however, agreed last year to pay $30 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that pollutants from the site caused nearby residents to get cancer. The panel's conclusion contradicts several previous studies that found there wasn't a radiological issue, said Mike Lopez, project manager for the Energy Department's cleanup efforts at the site. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reviewed the site in 2003 and concluded there was no risk, Lopez said.
