Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen

Firm to Make 2 Million Flu Vaccine Doses
By STEPHEN MANNING
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - The maker of FluMist, a relatively new nasal
flu vaccine, said Friday it would nearly double the number of doses it
makes to help meet demand caused by a shortage of flu shots.
The inhaled vaccine is an option for people who do not fall into the
high-risk groups who are targeted for the nation's limited supply of flu
shots. FluMist must be given by a health care professional and is
approved only for healthy people ages 5-49.
Last year, the nasal vaccine cost two to three times more than the flu
shot. But on Friday, a supermarket chain quoted a price that is more
competitive with the shot.
In two weeks, Giant Food will offer FluMist at around $30 per dose at
pharmacies in 34 of its Virginia stores, according to spokesman Barry
Scher. Last fall, Giant sold FluMist for $59.95 per dose. Giant charges
$20 for a flu shot, although the cost for shots can vary widely
depending on where it's offered.
Also Friday, some health insurance companies, including Aetna and Empire
Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York, said they would cover FluMist during
the upcoming flu season.
The nasal vaccine is made with a weakened live virus and is not approved
for use by the elderly or toddlers, two of the groups that health
officials say should be first in line for the limited number of flu
shots.
The Food and Drug Administration set age limits for FluMist over concern
it could increase the risk of asthma attack in young children and might
not be as effective for the elderly as a flu shot.
Gaithersburg, Md.-based MedImmune had only made 1.1 million doses for
this flu season, following disappointing sales last year. But the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked MedImmune to step up
production to help cover this year's flu shot shortage.
The company said it would rely on frozen supplies of vaccine already on
hand to produce nearly 1 million more doses. The extra FluMist could be
available to the public by late November, said spokeswoman Clarencia
Stephen.
MedImmune made 4 million doses of FluMist in 2003, predicting strong
demand for the needle-free vaccine. But the limits on those who can use
it, difficult storage requirements and a high price led to dismal sales.
The company has slashed its wholesale price from the roughly $46 per
dose it charged last year. Wholesale prices this year will be $23.50 for
returnable doses and $16 each for nonreturnable doses. The company does
not put a suggested retail price on the vaccine, Stephen said.
MedImmune also scrapped a marketing campaign aimed at the general
public. It chose to focus instead on persuading doctors to use FluMist
while it awaited the release of a new formulation, expected in 2007.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Is Anger and/or Depression Affecting Your Immune
System?
In the 60's and 70's people were taught that they had to vent their
anger at all costs and if you were the one closest you got the brunt of
their anger. No ideas were given on how to vent constructively nor were
they usually given alternatives to letting it go on whoever happened to
be close at hand. That idea was a left-handed way of saying anger is
okay and you can let it go at any time. Remember that was the years of
free love and the flower children. One extreme to another?
We cannot always avoid anger, if you are human, but it can be controlled
and directed away from others. But anger is damaging to people when you
let it out at the person nearest you. It alienates them and makes them
not want to be around you. Not smart!
More dangerous than that is the fact that anger also has a negative
effect on the immune system in both men and women. Anger is stressful,
and stress causes free-radical damage. In turn Free-radicals damage and
destroy your immune system, which ruins your overall health creating
cancer, chronic diseases and viral as well as bacterial infections.
Something simple can produce stress and/or anger in some. Maybe it's a
relative coming to visit that's a thorn in your side. Some days it may
be too many extra-curricular activities to get your children to that
sets up that stress. Or are you an elderly losing your vision or
mobility, which creates stress and anger. I watched an extremely genius
doctor, who was one of the top physicians in the city, do this year
after year. His mother-in-law and father-in-law made visits twice a year
to see he and his wife and I could tell, without even asking him, when
they were coming. He always got a virus of some sort the week before
they showed up. I finally told him what was happening and what to do but
of course you can't tell a doctor what to do when you are his lowly
nurse/office administrator, so he continued for the whole six and
one-half years that I worked with him? This one stressor decimated his
immune system twice a year, year after year and I'm sure probably
continues to this day?
A study, of 82 elderly men and women with an Alzheimer's afflicted
spouse, was done to try and establish the relationship between
depression, anger and immune function of the Alzheimer's caretaker? A
caretaker goes through all of sorts of horrific emotions with their
infirmed spouse and usually feel guilty for feeling them. The study
followed these families for a year and a half and studied the
caretakers' physical and psychological health as well as their physical
activity. The results found that not only the patient suffering from
Alzheimer's but both the male and female caregivers who experienced
increased anger, depression and guilt levels had suppressed immune
function opening them to the more illnesses.
Reducing anger and/or stress can be as simple as getting at least 20
minutes of daily exercise, whether it's walking or in a gym this will
help reduce stress and tension, curbing free-radical damage. I also
recommend two things for those stressed out free-radical damaging
problems ? take a fast absorbing 84 mineral liquid complex read the
ABC's Of Minerals to better understand why - a meganutrient antioxidant
daily vitamin and add Tolerance Stress Reliever herbal formula (1
capsule 3 times a day) all to build a body free of free-radical damage.
Inactive elderly men and women and people in high stress jobs or
stay-at-home moms - overwhelmed with the tasks at hand - are equally at
risk to weak or dead immune systems and should follow the above
recommendation, if you wish to remain healthy and well?.
Rid yourself of those illness possibilities today!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Healthy Holiday Table Fare Year Round!
The food that so many people eat only on Thanksgiving, and that's a
shame, since they're among one of the most nutritious of vegetables.
If you don't eat sweet potatoes very often, or only at holiday time when
they're smothered in melted marshmallow goop and baked until they're
unrecognizable, you're missing out on one of nature's truly perfect
foods. Low in calories, high in fiber, great for diabetics and people
who are carbohydrate sensitive, packed with minerals - rich in Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium while rich with vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, DFE, E, Thiamin,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid and tastes great!
Their bright color is key to their high beta-carotene content, and
containing the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. A sweet potato really
isn't a potato; it is part of the sprawling vine called morning glory.
The sausage-shaped tubers are a bit potato-like, but taper to pointed
ends unlike potatoes. Skin is smooth and can be white, red, golden or
purple/black. Having sweet purple, white, yellow or deep orange flesh.
In 1932, when the sweet potato was considered a poor man's food,
Americans consumed 30 pounds each per year. Now, it's closer to 4
pounds, though the tuber has become more appealing and growing because
it's a favorite of Oprah Winfrey and television chef Emeril Lagasse. It
is also a hormone smoothing veggie for women in menopause,
post-menopause or perimenopausal years. Rich in beta-carotene!!!
A study conducted by the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland
gave 21 HIV-positive people 180 mg (300,000 IU) of beta-carotene every
day for four weeks, resulting in several indicators of their "helper" T
cell activity increasing significantly over the people who were given a
look-alike-but-inactive placebo, whose indicators dropped. "Helper" T
cells are the primary target of the HIV virus, and the body's ability to
fight infections diminishes as their levels drop. A study conducted by
John Hopkins University researchers linked high levels of beta-carotene
with a lower incidence of lung cancer, which kills approximately 145,000
Americans every year. A great reason to eat sweet potato.
At least 70 research studies have found an increased risk of cancer in
people who don't eat enough produce rich in carotenoids. Since the sweet
potato is very rich in beta carotene how better to get a health benefit?
There are two basic types of sweet potatoes:
Moist: (orange fleshed) tends to be plumper and its
skin a little redder. The sweeter orange-fleshed sweet potato varieties
dominate the U.S. market. often called "yams," but this is a misnomer:
The true yam aka "botanical family Dioscoreaceae" is a large - as much
as 100 pounds - root vegetable grown in Africa and Asia and rarely seen
in the western world. However, over time common usage has made the term
"yams" acceptable when referring to sweet potatoes.
Dry: (yellow or purple-fleshed). Some people prefer
the starchier yellow-fleshed types, a little narrower with a tan skin,
when they aren't side by side, it's pretty difficult to judge the
difference. In most instances, you can assume you're getting
orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. If you are actively seeking the
yellow-fleshed, you should ask the produce manager. The Okinawan sweet
potato, grown year round in Hawaii has light skin and lavender flesh and
is of Chinese and Japanese origin. The potato is not well known or easy
to get on the mainland, except in specialty or ethnic markets on the
West Coast. Something I experienced this spring when I was in Hawaii and
loved them?
A bit of history;
In 1514, Peter Martyr named nine varieties that grew in Honduras. It was
taken to Spain about 1500 and several kinds were cultivated there by the
middle of the 16th century, including red, purple, and pale or "white"
varieties.
Cultivation of sweet potatoes was tried unsuccessfully in Belgium in
1576. John Gerarde of London, claimed that in 1597 he grew the plant in
England (probably without much success) and that it was known in India,
Barbary, and other hot regions.
Early Spanish explorers are believed to have taken the sweet potato to
the Philippines and East Indies, from which it was soon carried to
India, China, and Malaya by Portuguese voyagers. The original
introductions from America into the Pacific and Far East were so
unobtrusive that the origin of the plant was long overlooked, many
believing it native to southern and southeastern Asia.
Sweet potatoes are sold throughout the year, but are most abundant in
their harvest season of fall and early winter, found on sale in the U.S.
around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Sweet potatoes are also sold canned or frozen. The canned potatoes are
usually packed in heavy syrup--"candied"--although some processors also
pack them in water. Canned sweet potatoes are significantly lower in
beta-carotene, vitamin C, and B vitamins than fresh ones.
Selecting sweet potatoes;
Choose heavy, similar-sized potatoes if you plan to cook them whole, so
that the cooking time will be uniform. Choose potatoes that are smooth,
hard, and free of bruises or decay, even if cut away, a decayed,
shriveled brown/black spot may have already imparted an unpleasant
flavor to the entire potato.
My family's favorite ways of eating sweet potatoes are;
Sliced about 1/8" thick and round like silver dollars, Sautéed in butter
until tender, with just a hint of brown sugar.
Second favorite is baked either whole or sliced;
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Peel and cut into thick round slices or quarter potato.
In a baggie put 1/2 teaspoon Stevia or 1 teaspoon brown sugar, pinch of
ground allspice, pinch of cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, 1/4
teaspoon Turmeric, shake until well mixed. Spray slices with virgin
olive oil then put into bag with spices and shake until covered with
mixture. Layer one layer on cookie sheet that has been sprayed with
olive oil. Put into oven and bake about 20 minutes then turn potatoes
over and bake another 20 to 25 minutes until done and slightly browned.
There are as many ways of eating sweet potatoes as there are people
so use your imagination and eat for health?
Enjoy your newfound mineral and vitamin rich food!

FDA Accused of Silencing Vioxx Warnings
Oct 8, 2004
By DIEDTRA HENDERSON
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration silenced one
of its drug experts who raised safety concerns weeks before
Merck & Co. (MRK) yanked the blockbuster drug Vioxx due to
increased risks for heart attack and strokes, the chairman of
the Senate Finance Committee said Thursday.
Dr. David J. Graham, associate director for science in the FDA
Drug Center's Office of Drug Safety, told Senate investigators
he faced stiff resistance within the regulatory agency to his
findings.
"Dr. Graham described an environment where he was 'ostracized,"subjected
to veiled threats' and 'intimidation,'" Sen. Chuck Grassley,
R-Iowa, said in a statement after Finance Committee
investigators interviewed the researcher Thursday.
Graham told The Associated Press that Grassley's
characterization was accurate. Raising safety concerns within
the agency is "extremely difficult," the 20-year employee said,
declining further comment.
In a prepared statement, the FDA said it "values open discussion
and frank exchange about scientific and medical issues" and
subjects its scientists to "more rigorous" scrutiny than typical
scientific peer reviews.
The Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of
Congress, already has been asked to look into whether the FDA
muzzled another staffer who linked antidepressants to raising
the odds of children suffering suicidal tendencies. When Merck
voluntarily pulled Vioxx from the market on Sept. 30, the GAO
was asked to roll the FDA's handling of that controversy into
its inquiry.
That report is not expected for months. Grassley's committee is
one of three in Congress also scrutinizing the FDA's actions.
A "picture is emerging of an agency that can't see the forest
for the trees," Grassley said. "Merck knew it had trouble on its
hands and took action. At the same time, instead of acting as a
public watchdog, the Food and Drug Administration was busy
challenging its own expert and calling his work 'scientific
rumor.'"
Graham was lead author on a research project that studied the
records of 1.39 million Kaiser Permanente patients, including
40,405 treated with Pfizer's Celebrex and 26,748 treated with
Vioxx. The study found that high doses of Vioxx, known as
rofecoxib, tripled risks of heart attacks and sudden cardiac
death.
The research team's original conclusion said that high doses of
Vioxx should not be prescribed or used.
Graham, scheduled to present those findings in late August
during an epidemiology conference in France, said he ran into
resistance when the FDA reviewed his abstract.
"I think the recommendation about high dose rofecoxib is
unnecessary and particularly problematic since FDA funded this
study and David's travel to France to present it," Anne E.
Trontell, deputy director of the FDA's Office of Drug Safety,
wrote in an Aug. 12 e-mail.
The internal e-mail exchange was released by Grassley.
In the e-mail, Trontell suggested that Graham defer his
presentation in favor of a journal article so dissenting
scientists - including within the FDA - could comment.
She also said Merck should be alerted before the findings became
public "so they can be prepared for extensive media attention
that this will likely provoke."
Others within the agency suggested Graham's conclusion was too
strongly worded, given the FDA had not added such warnings to
Vioxx labels.
"I've gone about as far as I can without compromising my deeply
held conclusions about this safety question," Graham replied in
an Aug. 13 e-mail.
The FDA said such discussions are typical before scientific
findings are published.
The conclusion Graham presented in France was revised: "This and
other studies cast serious doubt on the safety" of Vioxx doses
higher than 25 mg. per day.
The FDA said that Graham decided to revise his abstract
conclusion. "He did so voluntarily," the agency said.
In testimony before a congressional panel in mid-September,
Andrew Mosholder, an FDA epidemiologist, said his bosses asked
him to soften recommendations about antidepressants.
Mosholder's analysis pointed to increased suicidal thoughts and
behaviors among children taking antidepressants well before
federal advisers pushed for strident warnings on the drugs. He
suggested preferential use of Prozac, the only drug approved to
treat depressed children and - according to his review - the one
with the lowest risk.
His supervisors within the FDA told him to suggest that children
use such medications "with caution," Mosholder told the
Congressional panel.
Dr. Paul Seligman, acting director of the FDA's Office of Drug
Safety, said the agency did not pressure Mosholder to change his
conclusion.
LENA'S NOTE: Since the FDA board is made up of CEO's and
marketing people from the pharmaceutical companies, I find it
hard to believe they can be impartial and scrutinous of any drug
from their company! But that's my opinion!
U.S. Wildlife Refuges Facing Threats
Oct 8, 2004
By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A sweeping wildlife preserve in southwestern
Arizona is among the nation's 10 most endangered refuges, due in large
part to illegal drug and immigrant traffic and Border Patrol operations,
a conservation group said Friday.
The Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, home to the endangered
Sonoran pronghorn, has been damaged by excessive human presence,
according to a report by Defenders of Wildlife. The report calls for
construction of a vehicle barrier on the southern edge of the refuge
along the Mexican border.
"We're trying to highlight the fact how special this place is, but it's
also at a crossroads," said Noah Matson, a Defenders of Wildlife
director in Washington who wrote "Refuges at Risk: America's Ten Most
Endangered National Wildlife Refuges 2004."
Arizona has become the nation's busiest entry point for illegal
immigrants from Mexico. High-speed off-road chases, abandoned vehicles
and damage to fragile desert landscapes have resulted. In 2001, Cabeza
became the site of Arizona's deadliest border crossing, when 14 people
died after temperatures soared to 115 degrees.
"In an attempt to curb illegal border crossings and prevent further
deaths, border officials have established permanent camps in the refuge,
incongruous with this once-pristine and remote place, but reflecting the
intensity of the problem," the report said.
A call to the Border Patrol office in Tucson was not immediately
returned Friday.
The 10 wildlife preserves cited Friday face some common threats,
including nearby development, pollution and invasive species, according
to the report. Escalating industrial and corporate development close to
and even inside refuges is the most pervasive threat, now that about
three dozen refuges have more than 1,800 active oil and gas wells, the
report said.
Besides Cabeza, the preserves on the list: Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge, Alaska; Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana; Desert
National Wildlife Refuge Complex, Nevada; Don Edwards San Francisco Bay
National Wildlife Refuge, California; Klamath Basin National Wildlife
Refuges, Oregon and California; Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge, North
Dakota; Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Texas; Pocosin
Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina; and Upper Mississippi
River National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois,
Iowa.
The United States has 540 wildlife refuges encompassing nearly 100
million acres. Half of the endangered refuges in Friday's report are in
the West.
Roger Di Rosa, Cabeza Prieta's manager, said the report is right about
the threat to the refuge. Officials estimate the population of Sonoran
pronghorns at 30 to 40 animals at most.
"The border issue is convoluted, and very complex," he said. "The
solution to the border problems is not on the border; it's in
Washington, D.C., and Mexico City. So we're just putting a Band-Aid on
the wound to stanch the blood. It's a difficult situation."
