As I walked through the grocery store I heard all this coughing and sneezing, from several people, and I immediately wanted to find them and tell them how to quickly stop and/or prevent those problems from happening but all I could really do was thank God that I knew how to have my immune system in shape so their sneezing and coughing couldn't make me ill from being in the store with their virus spreading... I didn't want to be a know it all by walking up to strangers and telling them what they needed to do to stay healthy... It was really a temptation since I hate seeing people be less than they can be... Are you prepared for the colds and flu season? That doesn't mean getting a flu shot, which is a long shot at preventing anything but usually weakens the system in the short term...

To measure the effects of age-related memory loss, researchers at the department of educational psychology and special education at Georgia State University in Atlanta asked two groups of people to memorize the position of pieces on a backgammon board. Then they asked them to reproduce the positions on a second board. As reported in the journal, Experiments in Aging Research, one group of 25-year-olds memorized the board positions in two seconds. A group of 61-year-olds took five seconds to do the same thing. That's three seconds for just over three decades. 2 Three seconds just doesn't seem like a lot to worry about!

Two Apples a Day Keeps The Brain Alive!

Thomas Shea, a leading Alzheimer's researcher, says he can see the day when apples will become a part of the treatment protocol for Alzheimer's disease.

His study, conducted at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, found that animals fed moderate amounts of concentrated apple juice fared better on tests of memory. In humans, a comparable amount of apple juice would mean drinking approximately 2 eight-ounce glasses of apple juice a day or eating two to three apples daily.

The researchers determined that mice fed the juice had an increase in the production of an essential brain neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. The role this neurotransmitter plays in the brain is of interest to scientists studying ways to combat memory loss during the aging process.

Aspartame: It's the world's best ant poison

Those nice people who produce aspartame, the sweetener in diet drinks, have taken quite a hammering of late. So it's great to be able to report on a practical application of the sweetener that puts it in a more positive light.

According to Jan Jenson of Mooresville, North Carolina, it's the world's greatest ant poison. "It works better than the most deadly poisons I have tried. Any time those ants show up again, I simply dump another package of NutraSweet in a corner, and they will be gone for a year or so again," she reports.

She made the discovery after carpenter ants, which were resistant to even the deadliest ant poisons such as Orkin, plagued her home. At her wit's end, she remembered reading that aspartame had first been developed as an ant poison until the manufacturer discovered its more lucrative role as a sweetener. She bought two packets of NutraSweet, put one in a corner of her two bathrooms, and she didn't see another ant for nearly a year.

As with any poison, Jan recommends that you wear gloves and wash your skin afterwards should you come into direct contact with the poison. Of course, you must avoid swallowing it (oh, yes, of course, you are supposed to swallow it).

Western Warming Warning Climate change will worsen droughts, wildfires and die-offs in the region, a report says.

Rising temperatures in the 11 Western states due to global warming will cause more prolonged droughts, more widespread wildfires, and extensive die-offs in regional plant, fish and game habitats, according to a report Thursday from the National Wildlife Federation.

"The American West is truly on the front line," said Patty Glick, the federation's global warming specialist. "The latest science is painting a bleak picture."

The national appetite for energy, fed by carbon-rich coal, oil and natural gas, imposes a double penalty on the ecological well-being of the West, said the group, which has 1 million members. The search for more fossil fuels - drilling permits on public lands have tripled in six years - disrupts fragile habitats even as increasing carbon dioxide alters the regional climate in ways that will make it impossible for many species to survive.

The federation report, called "Fueling the Fire," brings a regional focus to climate research findings from federal agencies, academia and science journals.

The researchers cited growing evidence that rising regional temperatures had already caused warmer winters, earlier springs and less snow - increasing the likelihood of winter flooding and of diminished summer water supplies.

All told, the winter snowpack, which is the source of 75% of the West's water, has declined by up to a third in the northern Rocky Mountain region and more than 50% in parts of the Cascades since 1950, the federation reported.

Indeed, the West is in the middle of a prolonged drought that may be the worst since record-keeping began more than a century ago - the direct consequence of altered weather patterns caused by warmer temperatures in the Pacific and Indian oceans, other research groups have reported.

As the Western landscape becomes more desiccated, wildfires become more common, more widespread and harder to control, experts said.

This past wildfire season was the most severe on record, said ecologist Steven W. Running at the University of Montana College of Forestry and Conservation.

More than 9.6 million acres burned over the summer - twice the seasonal average - and at $1.5 billion, the expense to fight them was the greatest ever.

"The warming trend we are under is clearly accelerating and expanding the wildfire activity," Running said.

"There is no reason we can see that it will reverse anytime soon."

LENA'S COMMENT: Did you notice the statement; "drilling permits on public lands have tripled in six years" yet we are paying more for gas in all areas of living but worse yet that also increases warming drastically while lining the pockets of the gas industry! What I find appalling is that is the exact length of time our current President and Vice President - came from the oil industry - have been in office... How fast that happened! Could it have been in the plans before elections? Looks like yes would be the answer!
