EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++

Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

Here it is the beginning of a new week and I sit here reevaluating my health, as I try to do at least monthly to make sure I am doing my best. I know you may think that extreme but at my age, 69, if I want quality of life I need to make sure I'm doing the things to make quality possible... Sadly that was not the case when I was younger and so things were done to my body by the traditional medical world that has more than likely shortened my life but I do aim for quality of life not quantity! What is your wish for your health and life? Have you taken the steps to make sure it's as long and as healthy as you can have?  With all the environmental pollution and foods full of chemicals, pesticides and herbicides lacking the nutrients we need for health it is a challenge... Are you up to it? Just some things to think about for the beginning of this week!

Take charge of you and your family's health before it takes charge of you!

Study: Some Alzheimer's Drugs Very Risky
Oct 12, 2006
By LINDA A. JOHNSON

Widely prescribed anti-psychotic drugs do not help most Alzheimer's patients with delusions and aggression and are not worth the risk of sudden death and other side effects, the first major study on sufferers outside nursing homes concludes.

The finding could increase the burden on families struggling to care for relatives with the mind-robbing disease at home.

"These medications are not the answer," said Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, which paid for the study. He said better medications are at least several years away.

Three-fourths of the 4.5 million Americans with Alzheimer's disease develop aggression, hallucinations or delusions, which can lead them to lash out at caregivers or harm themselves. This behavior is the most common reason families put people with Alzheimer's in a nursing home.

The study tested Zyprexa, Risperdal and Seroquel - newer drugs developed for schizophrenia. Doctors are free to prescribe them for any use. However, the drugs carry a strong warning that they increase the risk of death for elderly people with dementia-related psychotic symptoms, mainly because of heart problems and pneumonia, and that they are not approved for such patients.

Yet roughly one-quarter of nursing home patients are on these drugs, and at least that many patients at home have used them, mainly because there are no great alternatives and there was some evidence they might help a little, experts say.

The study tested the drugs on 421 patients at 42 medical centers who needed considerable care but were living in their own home, a relative's or an assisted-living facility. The findings were reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Each patient got one of the drugs or a dummy pill, without knowing what they received. The doctor could raise the dose if needed. Patients were followed for nine months, longer than in most prior tests.

About four in five patients stopped taking their pills early - on average, within five to eight weeks - because the medications were ineffective or had side effects that included grogginess, worsening confusion, weight gain, and Parkinson's-like symptoms such as rigidity and trouble walking.

Five deaths were reported among the patients on the medication, versus two among those in the placebo group. But researchers said the difference could be a matter of chance. The causes of death were not disclosed.

Symptoms did improve in about 30 percent of patients taking the drugs, as well as in 21 percent of those getting dummy pills, partly because symptoms can naturally wax and wane.

Some patients who stopped taking one pill were switched to another treatment for the study's second phase, results of which are to be reported next spring.

While the federal government paid for the study, the medications were supplied by the manufacturers: AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, maker of Seroquel; Eli Lilly and Co., maker of Zyprexa; and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), maker of Risperdal. Most of the researchers have received grants or consulting or lecture fees from the industry.

Dr. Jason Karlawish of the University of Pennsylvania's Alzheimer's Disease Center wrote in an editorial that the drugs did help a small group of patients who had little or no side effects. He said Zyprexa and Risperdal were both better than Seroquel or the placebo in treating the behavioral problems.

Lead researcher Dr. Lon Schneider, director of the Alzheimer's Disease Center of California and a University of Southern California professor, said doctors should try the drugs if necessary, but watch patients closely and switch to something else after a few weeks if there is no improvement or side effects are too severe.

"Patients are put on these kinds of medications and not particularly monitored and treated for indefinite periods of time," Schneider said. "That just maximizes risk."

Schneider said nursing home residents need the drugs more because their behavior problems are generally worse than patients still at home, but their health is more fragile, raising the danger of side effects.

Dr. Claudia Kawas, an adviser to the Alzheimer's Association and a neurology professor at University of California-Irvine, said she sometimes prescribes the drugs. Kawas said that when delusions or aggression develop, it is best to determine if a change in the patient's life triggered the symptoms and whether the behavior can be managed with visits by a health worker.

Also, possible causes such as dehydration, infections and side effects from other medications should be ruled out.

Kawas noted that with the U.S. population aging, the number of Alzheimer's patients is expected to quadruple by mid-century to about 18 million.

A Japanese study has proved that dentures help the elderly maintain their sense of balance.

The Japanese-language journal Kokubyo Gakkai Zasshi reports that the department of geriatric dentistry at Tokyo Medical and Dental University measured the gait and balance of eight elderly people, first with their dentures removed, then with their false teeth in place.

With their teeth in place, the subjects were able to walk more quickly, with faster strides, longer steps and better balance

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

A tiny little food with a big taste!

These are one of my splurging foods? I spooned my capers into my fettuccini salad I began to wonder what exactly were these little dark things and were they nutritious or not? I know I like the taste but my husband doesn't. I've had them in many pasta salads over the years but really have no idea how nutritious they are?

Well, here's what I found out after going through over 200 pieces of information and thinking the nutrient information would be in the next book or article, but alas never to be? The reason I'm actually publishing this is because of the many hours spent trying to study out this tiny little bud so I felt justified in passing on what little information I did find. I also figured cabbages have many healthy nutrients so this little guy deserved some mention and I expect healthy nutrients simply by association?

The Capper [Capparis spinosa "Cruciferae"] is part of the cabbage family containing almost 250 species, most of which are herbs growing in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. It is unusual in that it loses its leaves during the rainy seasons and retains them during the dry season. It is called the "Rose of the Mediterranean."

Strange but true, Capers are the unopened green flower buds of the Capparis spinosa, a wild and cultivated prickly, perennial bush grown mainly in Mediterranean countries (southern France, Italy, and Algeria) and also in California. Manual labor is required to gather capers, for the buds must be picked each morning just as they reach the proper size. Now I know why they are so expensive? After the buds are picked, they are usually sundried, then pickled in vinegar or salt brine. A good rule to follow; Rinse before using to flush away as much salt as possible.

Capers can range in size from that of a tiny peppercorn (the petite variety from southern France, considered the finest) to some as large as the tip of your little finger (from Italy). I prefer the small ones.

As for nutrients. I was unable to find much in that department so I'm still left wondering exactly what Capers consist of. I did find that they are mainly water (about 85%). The dry matter contains bitter flavonoid glycosides, a mustard oil glycoside named glucocapparin. According to the "Doctrine of Signatures," it will affect the body part it resembles (said to resemble testes) and therefore was used as an aphrodisiac. One encyclopedia said that it is the hyssop talked of in the Bible, but I could not find anything else to back up that statement.

Cretan Agapios Monachos in his manuscript of the 15th century he writes: "consume capers with vinegar and oil. If the caper is salted, dip it in water, then consume it before each meal." In the same paragraph he makes reference to interesting medicinal benefits of the caper: "it cures the spleen, destroys vermin, heals the hemorrhoids, increases the vitality of the sperm, cures liver ailments and cramps, mobilizes the urinary bladder, facilitates menstruation, and prevents rheumatism." The 15th century had some good and some bad medicinal things so take it for what it is worth. I'm not saying it's so or not so, but since it's part of the cabbage I family prefer to think it's probably so!

I did find that parts of the bush, from which they grow, the roots and stems of the Woolly Caper Bush Capparis are popular in southern African traditional medicine and used for various conditions such as malaria, rheumatism, insanity, snake-bite, jaundice, headache, cough, pneumonia, tuberculosis and leprosy. This plant is also used to prevent abortion and treat infertility (van Wyk & Gericke 2000). However, this species evidently can be poisonous when used wrong. Nothing said about nutrients in the bud itself?

Capers can lend piquancy to many sauces and condiments; they can also be used as a garnish for meat and vegetable dishes. I add it to most of my pasta dishes?

Byzantine Pavlos Aeginitis recommends consumption of the caper served on a slice of bread topped with vinegar honey.

This is an out of this world Pasta fettuccine with capers!

1 (16-ounce) package uncooked spinach fettuccine pasta
1/3 cup virgin olive oil
1/4 cup capers, drained
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 cup prepared pesto
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup sliced black olives
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup cottage cheese or ? cup crumbled Feta cheese.
1/2 cup fresh chopped tomatoes
Sea Salt and coarsely ground pepper to taste
Freshly grated soy or tofu parmesan cheese

Cook pasta according to package directions: drain and return to pan to keep warm.

In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, heat olive oil, capers, white wine, pesto, and garlic 1 minute or until aromatic; stir in black olives, lemon juice, and cottage or Feta cheese, Immediately Remove from heat and pour over pasta; toss to coat thoroughly. Season with salt and pepper add chopped tomatoes. Transfer onto individual serving plates and garnish with parmesan cheese.

Makes 4 servings.

Enjoy your new found bud!

Diabetics Warned About Fake Test Strips
Oct 14, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government warned diabetics Friday to watch for counterfeit versions of test strips commonly used to monitor blood sugar levels. The test strips, for use in glucose monitors made by a Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) company, were distributed nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration said in a public alert.

The phony test strips are for use with various models of LifeScan Inc.'s OneTouch brand of blood glucose monitors. LifeScan is part of New Brunswick, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson.

The counterfeit test strips could give incorrect blood glucose values, leading patients to take too little or too much insulin and suffer injury or death, the FDA said. The agency said it hasn't received any such reports.

Diabetics who purchased the counterfeit test strips should stop using them, replace them immediately and call a doctor, the FDA said.

The counterfeits are:

_OneTouch Basic/Profile, lot numbers 272894A, 2619932 and 2606340. The 50-count packages are labeled in English and French.

_OneTouch Ultra, lot number 2691191. The 50-count packages are labeled in English, Greek and Portuguese.

Samples of the stripes tested by LifeScan do produce blood-glucose results, but they do not meet company specifications, LifeScan spokesman Dave Detmers said.

The FDA is investigating, an agency spokeswoman said. Neither the FDA nor the company could say how many of the counterfeits were sold. Detmers said the company had received a few dozen reports of fakes, primarily from consumers.

The fakes were distributed nationwide but primarily in Ohio, New York, Florida, Maryland and Missouri by Medical Plastic Devices Inc., of Quebec, Canada, and Champion Sales Inc., of Brooklyn, N.Y., the FDA said.

LifeScan said it was "vigorously pursuing legal actions." Detmers would only say that the company had two civil suits pending, and he declined to provide details.

A message left with Medical Plastic Devices was not immediately returned. No listing for a Champion Sales in Brooklyn could be found.

The alert came a day after LifeScan said it was voluntarily recalling one lot of its SureStep Pro test strips (lot number 2634187008) and a single lot of its OneTouch SureStep test strips (lot number 2627353). The lots contain some test strips that don't give proper confirmation readings, the company said.

Consumers with questions can call LifeScan at (866) 621-4855.

Competitive Era Fails to Shrink Electric Bills
By DAVID CAY JOHNSTON
October 15, 2006

A decade after competition was introduced in their industries, long-distance phone rates had fallen by half, air fares by more than a fourth and trucking rates by a fourth. But a decade after the federal government opened the business of generating electricity to competition, the market has produced no such decline.

Regulated Monopolies or Competitive Markets? Instead, more rate increase requests are pending now than ever before, said Jim Owen, a spokesman for the Edison Electric Institute, the association for the investor-owned utilities that provide about 60 percent of the nation’s power. The investor-owned electric utility industry published a June report entitled “Why Are Electricity Prices Increasing?”

About 40 percent of all electricity customers — those in 23 states and the District of Columbia where new competition was approved — mostly paid modestly lower prices over the past decade. But those savings were primarily because states, which continue to have some rate-setting power, imposed cuts, freezes and caps at the behest of consumer groups that wanted to insulate customers from any initial price swings.

The last of those rate protections expire next year, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and other federal agencies warn in a draft report to Congress that “customers may experience rate shock” as utilities seek to make up for revenue they did not collect during the period of artificially reduced prices and to cover higher costs of fuel. They warned that “this rate shock can create public pressure” to turn back from electricity prices set by the market to prices set by government regulators.

The disappointing results stem in good part from the fact that a genuinely competitive market for electricity production has not developed.

Concerned about rising prices, California and five other states have suspended or delayed transition to the competitive system.

And voters around two California cities, Sacramento and Davis, will decide next month whether to replace investor-owned utilities with municipal power in hopes of lowering rates. Drives are under way to expand public power in Massachusetts. In Portland, Ore., the city council tried and failed to buy the local utility company.

Electric customers in other states are facing rude surprises.

In Baltimore, an expected 72 percent rate increase in electricity prices has aroused so much protest that the state legislature met in special session, where it arranged to phase in the higher costs over several years. In Illinois, rates are about to rise as much as 55 percent.

The three New York area states opened their electricity markets to competition, with different results.

In Connecticut, residential electric rates rose up to 27 percent last year to an average of $128 a month, and are expected to go up as much as 50 percent more in January.

In New Jersey, rates rose up to 13 percent this year, and are poised to go much higher.

New York residential customers, by contrast, paid an inflation-adjusted average of 16 percent less in 2004 than in 1996, a state report said. It is not known how much of that is attributable to government-ordered rate cuts, but the state benefited from huge increases in power generated by its nuclear plants and by buying power from New England plants that, starting next year, may have less electricity to sell to New York.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and five other agencies, in the draft of the report to Congress, are unable to specify any overall savings. “It has been difficult,” the report states, “to determine whether retail prices” in the states that opened to competition “are higher or lower than they otherwise would have been” under the old system.

Joseph T. Kelliher, the commission chairman, said Friday that eventually “market discipline will deliver the best prices” and noted that every administration and Congress since 1978 had pushed the industry toward competition. He added that the commission recognized a need for “constant reform of the rules.”

Under the old system, regulated utilities generated electricity and distributed it to customers. Under the new system, many regulated utilities only deliver power, which they buy from competing producers whose prices are not regulated. For example, Consolidated Edison, which serves the New York City area, once produced almost all the power it delivered; now it must buy virtually all its electricity from companies that bought its power plants and from other independent generators.

The goal is for producers to compete to offer electricity at the lowest price, savings customers money.
