Update on the latest saga with my daughter, which threw the week off for the ezines.

I had to take a few days to cool down my temper and think this whole fiasco through before I reported to you or you would have thought me a raving lunatic, as I was for a couple of days... Frustration ran rampant at first...

I told you I expected an inaccurate biopsy report since the surgeon went directly into the thyroid and not into one of the tumors. This I knew immediately when I watched him go into the wrong area of her throat and then he pulled the needle out with liquid and no solid mass of tissue. He of course does not listen to me or the radiologists... The biopsy came back as Hashimoto's disease, which may or may not also be correct. He also did some damage that has left her with pain radiating from the middle of her throat left down and to the left of her heart and just above the descending colon, which he denies creating and says it's a stomach problem, even though she complained of it while he was doing the aspiration. I wonder if he ever looked at his anatomy books? I do not believe her stomach has moved so far left of it's original site or the intestines have elevated to that part of the shoulder and chest... He obviously is not looking at the two radiologists who reported solid masses with no liquid, which would have given him a clue that the liquid he pulled out was not from a tumor. Anyway, he tells us that she has Hashimoto's disease and nothing to do but let it run and no need to remove the tumors. So we are back to square one trying to get a second surgical opinion who will look at the radiologist report of cancerous tumors. This could take weeks or maybe her HMO will deny it since they think this surgeon is tops in his field. I suppose that could be because he saves them millions of dollars in surgical costs by letting people die or become very ill before taking care of them... I'm still very confident that our natural protocol will take care of the cancer, but if we could have the tumors removed it could work faster... I am taking Tolerance herbal formula daily to keep me a bit sane and my body from being damaged by the stress this asinine man who calls himself a doctor is causing...

Splenda's Newest Rival for Sucralose: NutraSweet

NutraSweet is engaging in exploratory talks with potential partners in China and India regarding the possibility of manufacturing sucralose, the artificial sweetener better known as Splenda.

Tate & Lyle, the manufacturers of Splenda, have so far maintained a monopoly over sucralose with strict patents on the production process, resulting in a supply currently less than the demand. NutraSweet, however, is investigating ways to produce sucralose without infringing on the patents.

Tate & Lyle have stated that they believe they have patented every viable way of producing sucralose through 2020.

Tate & Lyle plans to triple sucralose output by 2007, by expanding their Alabama plant and constructing a new facility in Singapore.

Paxil Alert for Pregnant Women

The popular antidepressant Paxil may increase the risk of birth defects if pregnant women take it during the first trimester, federal health officials announced late Tuesday.

The Food and Drug Administration posted the warning on its Web site after the drug's manufacturer, the British company GlaxoSmithKline, sent the agency and doctors a letter that cited evidence from a new study. Glaxo said in the letter that it had changed the drug's label to reflect the possibility of the increased risk.

Some doctors who read the letter said it was not clear whether the F.D.A.'s warning was necessary. The Glaxo study was an analysis of medical records from a managed care company, and did not provide convincing evidence that it was the drug, and not some other factor, that was responsible for the increased risk, they said.

"Typically in studies like this you can't control for other things that could have contributed to the increased rate of defects, like the severity of the mother's depression," said Dr. Timothy Oberlander, a developmental pediatrician at the University of British Columbia and BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.

The F.D.A. is reviewing the study, said Susan Cruzan, a spokeswoman for the agency.

The study involved 3,581 pregnant women and found a 4 percent incidence of birth defects in those taking Paxil during the first trimester, versus a 2 percent incidence in those taking other antidepressants. The risk in the general population was 3 percent, said Mary Anne Rhyne, a Glaxo spokeswoman. Among the most common malformations were ventricular septal defects: holes or other flaws in the wall between two of the heart's chambers.

The letter said previous studies of antidepressants and birth defect risk had been mixed. Some small analyses found an association; a large Swedish study did not.

Teeny Tiny Seedy Nutrients!

Unlocking of the almost unlimited healing power of the foods we eat every day is an uphill battle for those of us in the war against disease. Fast food has so adulterated our eating that we no longer look on foods with the same eye as times past. Today more and more studies are showing the benefits of raw and healthy foods yet we are not seeing enough of it in the mainstream media. And if you think about it, the medical establishment has always known -- and accepted that bad foods can make you sick. -- Yet these "experts" are as slow as molasses in accepting the flip side of the coin, namely, that GOOD foods can make you well! Doctors almost never mention foods unless it in relation to the cholesterol myth.

Educating people on good foods in relation to health is a real uphill battle against all the processed and fast foods around. Listen and take note that the old saying, "What you eat is what you are!" is very true!

These teeny tiny little seeds are great illnesses preventors and or healers!

Even though berry season is past in most areas you can still find them in stores both frozen and fresh. Berries are usually seed bearing and those seeds are important to our health.

I keep packages of different kinds of frozen berries in my freezer for my cobbler craving winter days. I grew up eating my grandmother's fantastic berry cobblers and they still remain my favorite. Strawberries make their way onto our table in the form of shortcake in strawberry season and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to fruit punch the rest of the year. Replacing sweets as treats year round. Most kids love berries frozen whole to eat like candy and make for a healthy body and strong teeth.

Berries, such as blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and the likes, contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up their mystic. These little berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants. The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types. Loaded with minerals and vitamins that are healthy for every body!

Blueberries tend to get all the attention these days but other berries are just as nutritious, it's just that nobody has done a lot of berry testing on the others so you don't find them written about as often. I believe one thing that is truly the crux of berries is the tiny seeds within the berry. Berries, most commonly, Blackberries have been used for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe they are very important in preventing problems.

Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA's, just as effective as other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the Intestinal system with disseminating the nutrients through out the body as well as its ability to move along toxins before they can damage the body, and the faster this happens the better for your health. Speedy removal of toxins and dissemination of nutrients happen when the intestines contain the proper amounts of probiotic bacteria and the proper fiber is introduced, and these tiny little seeds move things along swiftly.

EFA's and Your Health

Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha linolenic and oleic acids. 1997 studies (Johansson et al) found that these EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of 22 common edible wild northern berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma tocopherol as well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995). Red Raspberries have shown to have the highest levels of ellagic acid but is of sufficient quantity in all tiny seed bearing berries.

Grandma's Berry Cobbler

Set Oven to 375º before you start process.

Pastry for 1 pie:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick butter at room temperature
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons ice cold water
Yield: 6 - 8 servings

Berry Filling:

4 cups blackberries or berry of your choice with the exception of strawberries?
1 1/4 cups sugar
4 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup water
1/4 stick butter

Prepare pastry: Put flour, salt, butter, and oil into a bowl and mix with pastry mixer or with fork until shortening is the size of small peas. Add ice water and mix to pastry consistency. Refrigerate while preparing filling.
Wash and cap berries; drain. Combine berries, sugar, flour, and water, and place half of the berry mixture in oven-proof 9" x 9" x 2" baking dish.

Roll out pastry on floured board and cut into 3/4" strips. Place small side pieces of pastry into berry mixture add second half of berries. Arrange rest of pastry strips on top of berries in a criss-cross fashion and top with dots of butter or margarine, sprinkle lightly with sugar.

Bake at 375º until crust is golden brown. Serve hot with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.

Sadly food alone will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Read the 1936 Report

The Protective Effect of Flavanols in Chocolate

The chemicals known as flavanols, which are found in chocolate as well as in fruits and vegetables, can reverse smoking-related damage to blood vessels by boosting the levels of nitric oxide in the blood. This raises the possibility of a potential new treatment for cardiovascular disease.

Improved Blood Vessel Response

Researchers compared the effect of flavanols on a dozen smokers participating in a double-blind study. Half were given a cocoa drink rich in flavanols, and the rest had a drink that tasted the same but had far fewer flavanols.

Those who drank cocoa containing as much as 185 mgs of flavanols experienced significant increases in circulating nitric oxide and flow-mediated dilation -- a definite improvement in function. Moreover, the benefits disappeared when patients were given a drug that interferes with nitric oxide signaling.

More Flavanols Than the Usual

The study, however, was designed specifically to identify the active ingredients, so the cocoa drink used was specially processed to retain much higher levels of flavanols than are typically found in commercially-available cocoa drinks.

Smokers Chosen to Test Cardiovascular Benefits

Smokers were chosen for the study because their blood vessels tend to respond poorly to changes in blood flow, possibly related to impairments in how nitric oxide sends signals to the inner lining (the endothelium) of blood vessels, which is in turn a warning sign for cardiovascular disease.

The study was not designed to find out whether flavanols could specifically protect smokers, but rather to investigate the effects of cardiovascular disease in general.

LENA'S COMMENT: This isn't a really great study since it's paid for by the Hershey company and I suspect that the expected results were already set before the study was done making it almost impossible for the scientists to come up with any other result. Also this was using chemical manmade flavanols and not natural occurring ones, which our body sees differently... It's not to say that flavanols aren't good. They are and have been proven to be so but this study touted to be wisdom is flawed... So can we believe it? I have my doubts but you will have to make your own choice in that... Sadly most flavanols are processed out of chocolate before you get it but flavanols are found in berries of all kinds as well as dark chocolate, so there are alternatives.
