Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Half of Americans Could Get Osteoporosis
Oct 14, 2004
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - Half of all older Americans will have bone-thinning
osteoporosis or be at high risk of getting it by 2020 - unless they
start strengthening their bones now with a boost of calcium, vitamin D
and exercise, the surgeon general warned Thursday.
Weak bones, from osteoporosis and a variety of other bone diseases,
aren't a natural part of aging, Surgeon General Richard Carmona
stressed, though the risk of osteoporosis does increase over age 50. But
often doctors are just as guilty as their patients in overlooking the
risk - even forgetting to check bone density when middle-age or older
patients suffer fractures.
"Osteoporosis isn't just your grandmother's disease," Carmona said in
releasing the first surgeon general's report on bone health. "You are
never too old or too young to improve your bone health."
Osteoporosis affects an estimated 10 million Americans, and each year,
about 1.5 million of them suffer a fracture as a result. Another 34
million Americans have less severe bone thinning that increases their
risk.
Women are at particular risk, especially white women. But osteoporosis
does affect men, too, and people of all races - a risk that increases
over age 50 as it becomes harder for new bone to form.
Osteoporosis is an under-diagnosed disease, because many people don't
know their bones are thinning until one breaks, the report notes.
For older people especially, fractures are much more than nuisance:
Nearly one in five hip-fracture patients winds up in a nursing home, and
their risk of death during the next few months is up to four times
greater than that of similarly aged people with healthy bones.
Yet the report found that in one study, only one-eighth to a quarter of
patients who had a hip fracture were given a bone-density test to check
the severity of their bone-thinning. Also, fewer than a quarter were
given calcium and vitamin D supplements to help build up their bones,
and fewer than a tenth were prescribed effective osteoporosis drugs.
The new report makes a series of recommendations:
_Strong bones begin in childhood with proper calcium and vitamin D.
Recommended amounts vary by age, but about three 8-ounce glasses of
low-fat milk a day - combined with calcium from the rest of a normal
diet - is enough to meet most people's needs. Calcium is present in
other foods, too, such as broccoli and fortified orange juice; vitamin D
also is added to certain foods and can be absorbed from sunshine. But
many people also require supplements to get enough.
_Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, and
children 60 minutes, including weight-bearing activities that improve
bone strength and balance.
_Older people should minimize the risk of falls by moving flimsy rugs or
other items they might trip over, improving lighting and getting vision
checks.
_All women over 65 and any man or women who suffers even a minor
fracture after age 50 needs a bone-density test.
_Doctors should look for warning signs of bone thinning, including
people under 50 who have had multiple fractures. Also at risk are those
who take medications, such as steroid-containing drugs, or who have
hormonal, kidney or other diseases that over time can thin bones.
LENA'S NOTE: In 1995 I would have fit into the above category but I
found bone building 84 total liquid minerals and herbs that now has me
with the bone strength of a 30 year-old so my Internist said after my

Are You On The Road To Becoming A Diabetic?
Being thin does not guarantee you will not become a diabetic!
Millions are being diagnosed diabetic every year and is
obesity really why this is happening? You can be thin and have a
panicked pancreas! You can be thin and become what medicine calls a
diabetic!
One saltine cracker will take the blood sugar to over
100, and in many people it will cause the blood sugar to go to 150 for a
variety of reasons, not just the sugar in it.
This sets up an inflammatory reaction. You eat a diet that promotes
elevated glucose, and you produce increased glycated proteins and
A.G.E.s, you are increasing your rate of inflammation of any kind. You
get down to the roots, including arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and
headaches.
We only have one hormone that lowers sugar, and that's insulin. Its
primary use was never to lower sugar. We've got a bunch of hormones that
raise sugar, cortisone being one and growth hormone another, and
epinephrine and glucagon.
So you get this rush of sugar and your body panics, your pancreas panics
and it stores - when it is healthy - insulin in these granules that is
ready to be released. It lets these granules out and it pours out a
bunch of insulin to deal with this onslaught of sugar.
Eventually the pancreas gives up and stays in a panic state, when this
happens too often. Then you can be diagnosed as a diabetic.
Can Insulin Sensitivity Be Restored?
Insulin sensitivity can be restored to its original state, well, perhaps
not to its original state, but you can restore it to the state of about
a 10-year-old.
How to Increase Insulin Sensitivity
You can increase sensitivity by diet, which is one of the major reasons
to take omega-3 oils. We think of circulation as that which flows
through arteries and veins, and that is not a minor part of our
circulation, but it might not even be the major part. The major part of
circulation is what goes in and out of the cell.
There was an interesting study pertaining to this where they had a breed
of rat that was genetically susceptible to cancer. Researchers fed them
a high-omega-3 diet, plus iron, without any extra Vitamin E and they
were able to almost shrink down the tumors to nothing because tumors are
rapidly dividing. This is like a form of chemotherapy, and the membranes
that were being formed in these tumor cells were very high in omega-3
oils. The iron acted as a catalyst for that oxidation, and the cells
were exploding from getting oxidized so rapidly.
It has actually been shown by quite a number of papers that resistance
training for insulin resistance is better than aerobic training. There
are a variety of other reasons too. Resistance training is referring to
muscular exercises. If you just do a bicep curl, you immediately
increase the insulin sensitivity of your bicep. Just by exercising you
are increasing the blood flow to that muscle, and one of the factors
that determines insulin sensitivity is how blood can get there. It has
been shown conclusively that resistance training will increase insulin
sensitivity.
What about supplements such as Chromium?
You want to increase the ability of the cells in the body to burn fat
and make that glucose burner into a fat burner.
Diabetics should go on 1,000 mcg of chromium, some a little bit more if
they are really big people. The amount is usually 500 mcg for a
non-diabetic, though it depends on their insulin levels.
LENA'S NOTE: Hence the reason we have so many uncontrolled
diabetics today. Doctors do not know how to treat them!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
A tiny little food with a big taste!
As I spooned on my capers to my fettuccini I began to wonder what
exactly were these little dark things and were they nutritious or not? I
know I like the taste but my husband doesn't. I've had them in many
pasta salads over the years but really have no idea how nutritious they
are?
Well, here's what I found out after going through over 200 pieces of
information and thinking the nutrient information would be in the next
book or article, but alas never to be? The reason I'm actually
publishing this is because of the many hours spent trying to study out
this tiny little bud so I felt justified in passing on what little
information I did find. I also figured cabbages have many healthy
nutrients so this little guy deserved some mention and I expect healthy
nutrients?
The Capper [Capparis spinosa "Cruciferae"] is part of the cabbage family
containing almost 250 species, most of which are herbs growing in
temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. It is unusual in that it
loses its leaves during the rainy seasons and retains them during the
dry season. It is called the "Rose of the Mediterranean."
Strange but true, Capers are the unopened green flower buds of the
Capparis spinosa, a wild and cultivated prickly, perennial bush grown
mainly in Mediterranean countries (southern France, Italy, and Algeria)
and also in California. Manual labor is required to gather capers, for
the buds must be picked each morning just as they reach the proper size.
Now I know why they are so expensive? After the buds are picked, they
are usually sundried, then pickled in vinegar or salt brine. A good rule
to follow; Rinse before using to flush away as much salt as possible.
Capers can range in size from that of a tiny peppercorn (the petite
variety from southern France, considered the finest) to some as large as
the tip of your little finger (from Italy). I prefer the small ones.
As for nutrients. I was unable to find much in that department so I'm
still left wondering exactly what Capers consist of. I did find that
they are mainly water (about 85%). The dry matter contains bitter
flavonoid glycosides, a mustard oil glycoside named glucocapparin.
According to the "Doctrine of Signatures," it will affect the body part
it resembles (said to resemble testes) and therefore was used as an
aphrodisiac. One encyclopedia said that it is the hyssop talked of in
the Bible, but I could not find anything else to back up that statement.
Cretan Agapios Monachos in his manuscript of the 15th century he writes:
"consume capers with vinegar and oil. If the caper is salted, dip it in
water, then consume it before each meal." In the same paragraph he makes
reference to interesting medicinal benefits of the caper: "it cures the
spleen, destroys vermin, heals the hemorrhoids, increases the vitality
of the sperm, cures liver ailments and cramps, mobilizes the urinary
bladder, facilitates menstruation, and prevents rheumatism." The 15th
century had some good and some bad medicinal things so take it for what
it is worth. I'm not saying it's so or not so, but since it's part of
the cabbage I family prefer to think it's probably so!
I did find that parts of the bush, from which they grow, the roots and
stems of the Woolly Caper Bush Capparis are popular in southern African
traditional medicine and used for various conditions such as malaria,
rheumatism, insanity, snake-bite, jaundice, headache, cough, pneumonia,
tuberculosis and leprosy. This plant is also used to prevent abortion
and treat infertility (van Wyk & Gericke 2000). However, this
species evidently can be poisonous when used wrong. Nothing said about
nutrients in the bud itself?
Capers can lend piquancy to many sauces and condiments; they can also be
used as a garnish for meat and vegetable dishes. I add it to most of my
pasta dishes?
Byzantine Pavlos Aeginitis recommends consumption of the caper served on
a slice of bread topped with vinegar honey. I've never had it that way,
but might just try it...

The Great Cancer and Illness Producers!
Cancer and other illnesses are proliferating in your body as you
read this!
There are these creatures called free-radicals over producing
and roaming your body just waiting for the moment to make you
ill.
Defense and defeat is the secret to preventing them from being
successful illness and disease producers!
Antioxidants defenders to the rescue, if you will let them.
Antioxidants are needed to neutralize harmful molecules in your
body which are called free radicals. While free radicals play
some essential roles in health producing energy and fighting
infections. On the other hand too many causes oxidation thereby
damaging your body's cells.
Too many free-radicals have been traced to the lack of minerals,
vitamins, along with environmental poisoning - both internal and
external - along with foods lacking the nutrients to keep us
health.
Oxidation from too many free-radicals age cells and sets up the
stage for diseases such as heart disease, viral invasions and
various kinds of cancer.
There are many different types of free radicals, and no single
antioxidant can neutralize all of them. Your best bet is to
take a variety of antioxidants or to use a complete antioxidant
formula. Whichever you choose. Experts agree that the six of the
known to be most effective antioxidants are;
1. ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID: This powerful antioxidant
plays two important roles; It boosts your body's
production of glutathione an antioxidant and it helps
your body recycle and reuse other antioxidants so
they can keep fighting free radicals. The therapeutic
dose for lipoic acid is 100 - 600 mg/day.
2. CAROTENOIDS: Beta-carotene is the best-known
carotenoid, but lutein and lycopene are also key.
Found in fruits and vegetables, they protect plants
against free radical damage. They do the same to
your body when consumed. Take at least 10 to 500
mg of mixed carotenoids daily. Found in greens,
Brewer's yeast and small amount in red meats.
3. COENZYME Q10: This free-radical fighter plays
a crucial role in maintaining cell energy. It's one of
the most frequently prescribed heart "drugs" in
Japan. Take 30 to 100 mg daily and should be
Taken with foods containing an oil.
4. FLAVONOIDS: Fruits and vegetable are loaded
with these plant pigments, such as quercetin and
anthocyanidins, which help fight free-radical damage.
Take 250 to 2000 mg daily.
5. VITAMIN C: Contrary to recent news flashes this
is still a most important vitamin. This antioxidant
boosts your immunity. Most animals make their own
vitamin C, but humans have lost their ability to do so.
Take 500 to 2,000 mg daily ~NOTE: People who have
hemachromatosis or a history of kidney stones should
limit intake to 250 mg daily.
6. VITAMIN E: This may very well be the single most
important vitamin you can take. Its role in preventing
coronary heart disease has been studied for more than
50 years. Take 400 IU daily of the Natural form,
d-alpha tocopherol. ~NOTE: If you are on blood thinners
or aspirin daily, Vitamin E may intensify the blood-thinning
effect of these drugs. Talk to your doctor about reducing
your medication dosage to make it possible to take
Vitamin E.
Maximize absorption: Take folic acid and B vitamins with
food. Many people have a genetic defect that limits folic acid
absorption.
Here's some tips on supplement labels.
1. In natural brands, the most common additives that give a
tablet its form, are cellulose and magnesium stearates, which
appear to be safe.
2. Conventional brands, usually found in pharmacies and grocery
stores, contain a variety of sweeteners &chemicals - making them
difficult to impossible to be absorbed ? and/or colors that are
unnecessary and may cause allergic reactions. Among those
additives are lactose, modified food starch, corn starch,
polysorbate 80, sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, polyethylene
glycol, artificial colors, and edible ink.
3. Supplement bottles will usually give the percentage of or DV
(daily value) of each nutrient your supplement contains. The DV
is a dosage guide that's more up-to-date but roughly equivalent
to the old RDA (Recommended dietary allowance). At the end of
the list, you may find nutrients without an established DV.
Don't be put off by this -many important nutrients, such as
carotenoids and flavonoids don't have DVs.
4. Vegetarians should avoid capsules made of gelatin, an animal
byproduct. Choose brands with cellulose instead.

Many Amphibians Threatened Worldwide
Oct 14, 2004
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID
WASHINGTON (AP) - Eye of newt and toe of frog may one day be gone from
witches grog. Indeed, not just frogs and newts but amphibians in general
are rapidly becoming threatened worldwide, a new study shows.
And while few would miss the evil broth concocted by the witches in
Shakespeare's Macbeth, the rapid decline of animals like toads and
salamanders is raising concerns as it worsens, a team of researchers
reported Thursday.
"What we're seeing here is completely unprecedented declines and
extinctions," said Simon N. Stuart of the World Conservation Union, lead
researcher on the study.
These declines are "outside our normal experience," Stuart said in a
telephone interview.
There are a variety of reasons for some losses, while others remain a
mystery, the group reports in a paper being published online by the
journal Science.
Amphibians have porous skins and narrow environmental requirements, and
their decline may be an indication that something sinister is under way
in the environment, Simon said.
"Where amphibians proceed, others may follow, possibly us also," he
said.
The researchers reported that 1,856 species, 32.5 percent of the known
species of amphibians, are "globally threatened," meaning they fall into
the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's categories of
vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. By comparison, 12
percent of bird species and 23 percent of mammal species are threatened.
The researchers reported 435 amphibian species are in rapid decline, at
least nine species have gone extinct since 1980 and another 113 species
have not been reported from the wild in recent years and are considered
to be possibly extinct.
Their findings, called the Global Amphibian Assessment, were compiled by
more than 500 scientists in 60 countries.
"All in all, amphibians are certainly in deep trouble in many areas, for
a whole suite of reasons," said Ross A. Alford, a professor of tropical
biology at James Cook University in Australia.
Alford, who was not a co-author of the report, said via e-mail that the
study "has done a good job of documenting (the decline), and also of
pointing out how much more we need to know to really understand the
scale of the problem and begin to attempt to solve it."
Indeed, he added, the report may even understate the problem due to the
patchiness of knowledge of amphibians.
"It is quite possible that there are as-yet large-scale ... declines,
similar to those that have been documented for Australia and the New
World tropics, that are occurring or have occurred" elsewhere, said
Alford, author of a 1999 study of amphibian decline.
Trevor Beebee of the University of Sussex in England added that
amphibians may be a type of warning, like the canaries miners used to
take with them because the birds are more sensitive than people to the
dangerous gasses that can occur in mines.
"In my view this assessment of amphibian declines is very important,
because it quantifies an extremely worrying set of observations," Beebee
said via e-mail. "Amphibians are declining in many places all over the
world, often in areas where we might expect human effects to be
minimal."
The new paper concludes that while exploitation and loss of habitat are
factors in some losses, other declines remain enigmatic, occurring for
unknown reasons.
Overexploited species are concentrated in East and Southeast Asia where
frogs are harvested for food, the report says. Habitat loss occurs more
widely, but especially in Southeast Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean,
it adds.
A major concern, the researchers say, are the enigmatic declines and
disappearances occurring in North and South America, Puerto Rico and
Australia.
"Such declines have taken place even within well-protected areas, such
as Yosemite National Park (California), Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve
(Costa Rica) and Eungella National Park (Australia)," the researchers
wrote.
Some studies have associated these unexpected declines with a fungal
disease that tends to occur at higher elevations and streamside
locations, the report notes. Beebee also suggested subtle effects of
climate change may also be at work.
Funding for the Global Amphibian Assessment was provided by the Moore
Family Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Conservation
International, MAVA Foundation, U.S. State Department, Regina Bauer
Frankenberg Foundation for Animal Welfare, National Science Foundation,
Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, television producer George Meyer,
