Would You Go Vegan if Your Heart Depended on It?

Do you hate the thought of going without meat in your diet? Consuming less meat is good for the heart, but convincing your brain to go along with the decision is much more difficult.

Several studies have shown the positive link between plant-based eating and good health. Reducing the amount of meat in your diet can lower incidence of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some forms of cancer.

A vegan diet is primarily plant-based foods such as fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and vegetables. A vegan diet contains less cholesterol and fat but includes more fiber. However, it doesn't mean you have to eat a steady diet of tree bark or seeds found in the wilderness.

The more restrictive your diet, the more you should make sure you are getting the proper nutrients. For example, a vegan diet lowers the amount of vitamin B-12 that you would normally consume if you ate meat regularly. To combat that deficit, consume enriched cereals and fortified soy products. To control other nutrients that may be deficient in your new diet, consider the following substitutions for good nutrition.

Calcium: Add dark green vegetables, spinach, tofu, fortified soy milk.

Protein: Consume legumes, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains.

Zinc: Eat more nuts, wheat germ and whole grains.

Iron: Good sources are lentils, dried beans, peas, dried fruit, enriched cereal.

To help your body absorb non-animal iron sources, eat foods rich in vitamin C while consuming vegan iron sources.

CDC Probe Links 21 Deaths to Cough Syrup

ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. health officials this week cracked the case of what caused the mysterious deaths of 21 people in Panama since midsummer - an industrial chemical in red cough syrup.

Officials continue to investigate how the medicine became contaminated. The Panamanian government has ordered the syrup removed from store shelves and the government factory that manufactured it shut down.

But U.S. health officials are tentatively counting the investigation as a success story in rapid investigation and international collaboration that may have prevented additional deaths.

"It was really a mystery illness that had everybody stumped," said Dr. Scott Dowell, who leads the Global Disease Protection program at the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many of the victims suffered kidney failure, paralysis and sagging of the facial muscles and other symptoms. Last week, Panama's Ministry of Health asked the CDC to send help. By that point more than a dozen deaths had been reported.

Early Wednesday, CDC investigators found diethylene glycol in four white plastic cough syrup bottles flown in from Panama City. Diethylene glycol is a chemical cousin of antifreeze and is used to keep products like glue and cosmetics moist.

"I think everybody's feeling pretty confident" that the chemical's presence explains the illnesses, said Eric Sampson, director of the CDC environmental health lab that made the find.

U.S. scientists discovered the chemical's dangers in 1937, when at least 105 people died after taking a DEG-containing antibacterial medicine made by the S.E. Massengill Co. of Bristol, Tenn.

The disaster became a turning point in U.S. regulatory history, influencing Congress to give the Food and Drug Administration the power to certify the safety of drugs before they are sold to the public.

DEG poisonings have erupted occasionally since then in other parts of the world. In late 1995 and early 1996, more than 30 children were admitted to a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with sudden kidney failure. An investigation by Haitian health officials, the CDC and others discovered diethylene glycol in acetaminophen syrup manufactured in Haiti.

As of Friday afternoon, the investigation had identified 58 illnesses in the outbreak, including the 21 deaths, CDC officials said. Panamanian officials said they have an antidote for the chemical and planned to administer it immediately to the sick.

CDC officials are trying to position themselves to more quickly react to unusual outbreaks of illness around the world. The agency has 200 full-time employees in 45 countries, up from the 87 employees in 38 countries it had in 2000.

The agency established response centers in Thailand in 2001 and in Kenya in 2004. This year, it also established three more, in China, Egypt and Guatemala.

Four investigators from the Guatemala center traveled to Panama to assist in the CDC investigation.

Investigators noted many of the patients were taking lisinopril, a blood pressure medication, but last weekend an FDA lab ruled that out as the cause. Tests of blood, urine and tissue from autopsies found no contagious diseases, either.

Some of the people who grew ill had been taking a sugarless cough medicine that was made in a pharmaceutical factory operated by Caja de Seguro Social, a government hospital system. That led investigators to test the medicine.

Organs For Sale From Executed Prisoners

China executes more prisoners than the rest of the world combined, and many of their organs go to wealthy foreigners seeking transplants, according to this BBC News video.

An undercover investigation by BBC News found that China has a flourishing trade of organs from executed prisoners. China is rapidly becoming the destination of choice for rich foreigners in need of organ transplants.

The report shows how a patient can reliably find and purchase a healthy liver from a northern China hospital for a foreign-born family member in less than three weeks for about $100,000.

The undercover reporter pretending to make the purchase was reminded by the doctors that he should make his purchase quickly because executions increase prior to national holidays, making more organs available around those times.

U.S. Coal Plant Boom Poses Major Ecological, Economic Questions

DALLAS — (AP) A building boom that would add scores of coal-fired power plants to the nation's power grid is creating a new dilemma for politicians, environmentalists and utility companies across the United States.

Should power companies be permitted to build new plants that pollute more but are reliable and less expensive? Or should regulators push utilities toward cleaner-burning coal plants, even if it means they will cost more and are based on unproven technology?

How those questions are answered will have huge implications over the next few decades. It could determine how Americans light, heat and cool their homes and businesses, the rate of return on utility investments and the potential environmental effects of the new plants.

Nowhere do these competing interests play out with as much force as in Texas, where 16 coal-fired plants are proposed — 11 of them by Dallas-based TXU Corp., the state's biggest power company.

TXU's five-year, $10-billion plan is considered a bellwether and is closely watched by industry analysts, lawmakers, competitors and environmentalists across the U.S.

The company is hardly alone, however. About 154 coal-fired plants are on the drawing board in 42 states. Energy analysts say factors driving coal's resurgence are soaring power demands, volatile natural gas prices and a favorable investment market.

Coal now accounts for about 50% of the power generated in the U.S. By 2030, that share will increase to 57%, the Energy Department forecasts.

The U.S. has the world's largest coal reserves, enough to last for the next 200 to 250 years, analysts believe.

The resurgence of the energy source sparks debate about pollution, cost and technology.
