Chiropractic for Newborns and Infants

Birth is a normal, natural process that's been around since almost the beginning of humanity. As with any other task the body was created to perform, when you support normal functioning, you have your best chance at success.

The road down the birth canal and out into the world can be a trying one, particularly in the case of medical intervention and high-tech births. ( You may recall a JAMA study showing the United States ranked last in neonatal mortality, infant mortality and for the health of newborns.) As a result, there has been an ever-increasing occurrence of traumatic birth syndrome.

Traumatic birth syndrome describes the presence of trauma-induced skull and spinal damage and spinal misalignment as a result of the birth process. As tough as birth is, going through it with the woman lying on her back, working against gravity, on medications to increase the intensity of labor, numb to the delivery muscles, and often accompanied by surgical interventions, makes it exponentially more traumatic.

When you think about this, it's no surprise vertebral subluxation in infants is so common.

How the Birthing Process Injures Spines

During the pushing stage of labor, the spine may be injured as the fetus is compressed and pushed down the birth canal. The most frequent cause of subluxation in infants is the pulling, twisting and compression of the infant's spine during birth. If something alters normal birth, you will frequently have subluxations occur at the point of greatest stress (upper and lower cervical vertebrae).

While in severe cases, this can result in more obvious, clinical nerve damage such as paralysis, more frequently, subluxations remain unnoticed by physicians and parents with health issues rising at a later time. Among them:

Colic
Sleep disorders
Symptoms of lowered immunity
Poor development
Pediatric expert Dr. Maxine McMullen states, "Subluxations should be analyzed and corrected as soon as possible after birth to prevent these associated conditions."

Moreover, these subluxations have been found to be severe enough to lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) due to the pressure they cause upward toward the lower brain as well as creating numerous other disorders common to newborns, infants and young children.

Reports show chiropractic care can be helpful in such diverse disorders as cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, ear infections, the prevention of SIDS, and others.

While chiropractic care is not a treatment for anything, the benefits of adjusting subluxation to remove interference has been particularly telling in the case of small children.

In fact, young people need chiropractic care as much as or more than anyone to maximize proper development and minimize the advent of common infant symptoms and disease.

The Infant Adjustment

One of the most interesting studies, based on examination and adjustment of 1,000 infants, was done by Dr. Gutmann, a German medical doctor. (4,5) He concluded blocked nerve impulses at the level of the first vertebrae can be the cause of central motor impairment and lower resistance to infections, especially those of the ear, nose, and throat. (6)

Dr. Gutmann's research showed the children treated had success -- almost without exception -- for a variety of ailments by spinal adjustments at the atlas (top vertebra in the neck). Among the symptoms that responded favorably:

Congenital torticollis
"Growing pains"
Infantile scoliosis
Bronchitis tonsillitis
Restless sleep
Disturbed motor responses with repetitive falls
An inability to thrive

"If the indications are correctly observed," states Dr. Gutmann, "chiropractic can often bring about amazingly successful results, because the therapy is a causal one. With developmental disturbances of every kind, the atlanto-occipital joints should be examined and in each case be treated manually in a qualified manner. The success of this treatment eclipses every other attempt at treatment, including especially the use of medications." (7)

Most people would not consider Chiropractic care for infants and children. However, the fact of the matter is, children are very, very prone to misalignments of the spine. Their vertebra are not fully formed, nor are their ligaments and tendons fully strengthened. This, along with the fact that a child falls enough times in a day to hospitalize an adult, makes it clear children should be evaluated by a chiropractor for spinal abnormalities.

And, don't question the safety rating for Chiropractic treating children. The process is strictly AAA and cannot even be compared to the safety of medicine.

Nevertheless, countless children suffer from the side effects of modern medication each week, causing malpractice insurance for pediatrics and obstetrics to be astronomical -- reaching into the tens of thousands. Chiropractors, on the other hand, pay as little as $300-$500 annually for malpractice coverage.

Chiropractic makes good scientific, factual and common sense for your child. I urge you not to wait until they hurt or get hurt. Get them checked now!

9 Cases of Brain-Wasting Disease in Idaho

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - From the moment Joan Kingsford first saw her husband stagger in his welding shop, she wanted two things: His recovery and to know what made him sick.

She got neither. Alvin Kingsford, 72, died recently of suspected sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the fatal brain-wasting illness. The disease can be conclusively diagnosed only with an autopsy, which did not take place.

State and federal health officials are trying to get to the bottom of nine reported cases of suspected sporadic CJD in Idaho this year. Sporadic, or naturally occurring, CJD differs from the permutation dubbed variant CJD, which is caused by eating mad-cow-tainted beef and has killed at least 180 people in the United Kingdom and continental Europe since the 1990s.

"One thing is very clear in Idaho - the number seems to be higher than the number reported in previous years," said Dr. Ermias Belay, a CJD expert with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "So far, the investigations have not found any evidence of any exposure that might be common among the cases."

Normally, sporadic CJD only strikes about one person in a million each year, with an average of just 300 cases per year in the United States, or just over one case a year in Idaho. Over the past two decades, the most cases reported in Idaho in a single year has been three.

Until this year.

Of the nine suspected cases reported so far in 2005, three tested positive for an infectious disease of the nervous system, though more tests are pending to determine if the fatal illness was in fact sporadic CJD. Four apparent victims were buried without autopsies. Two suspected cases tested negative.

Still, federal and state health officials are stopping just short of calling the Idaho cases a "cluster," waiting for final test results from the victims who got autopsies.

The best tool of investigators to pin down the diagnosis - the autopsy - is sometimes hard to get, said Tom Shanahan with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Pathologists are often reluctant to perform the procedures, the cost of an autopsy can be high and some families are reluctant to give their consent, officials say.

Joan Kingsford wanted an autopsy done on her husband, but no mortician in the area would agree to handle Alvin's body after his brain cavity had been opened. They feared they would catch the rare disease, Kingsford said.

Ultimately, she opted to skip the autopsy and have a traditional funeral service.

"A week before he passed away, the funeral homes said they wouldn't take the blood out" if an autopsy was done on him, she said. "They just put some embalming in him and told me I had to have a funeral in three days."

CJD is transmitted through a malformed prion found primarily in the brain and spinal fluid of those infected, Belay said. Standard sterilization procedures don't eliminate the risk of infection; instead equipment must be soaked in a chemical solution for more than an hour and then heated, according to the World Health Organization.

Mortuary procedures - including embalming - can be done safely on intact bodies of CJD victims as long as extra precautions are taken, but the World Health Organization does not recommend embalming patients who have had autopsies.

Larry Whitaker, a Beaverton, Ore.-based regional salesman for the embalming chemical and equipment manufacturer Dodge Company, offers workshops to his clients on safe handling of CJD-infected bodies.

"When the brain has been removed, it is an extraordinary risk," Whitaker said. "This is one time I think that cremation has to be more than mildly considered."

A member of the Mormon Church, Joan Kingsford's church discourages cremation. She was thrown into making a decision about her husband's remains much sooner than she expected.

"It was two and a half months before we knew what was wrong with him, and by that time he was in the hospital," she said. "I wish we could have done the autopsy, because I think people need to know about this."

"We definitely have a problem in Idaho," she added.

Teeny Tiny Seedy Nutrients!

Unlocking of the almost unlimited healing power of the foods we eat every day is an uphill battle for those of us in the war against disease. Fast food has so adulterated our eating that we no longer look on foods with the same eye as times past. Today more and more studies are showing the benefits of raw and healthy foods yet we are not seeing enough of it in the mainstream media. Even though berry season is past in most areas you can still find them in stores both frozen and fresh. Berries are usually seed bearing and those seeds are important to our health.

I keep packages of different kinds of frozen berries in my freezer for my cobbler craving winter days. I grew up eating my grandmother's fantastic berry cobblers and they still remain my favorite. Strawberries make their way onto our table in the form of shortcake in strawberry season and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to fruit punch the rest of the year. Replacing sweets as treats year round. Most kids love berries frozen whole to eat like candy and make for a healthy body and strong teeth.

Berries, such as blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and the likes, contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up their mystic. These little berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants. The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types. Loaded with minerals and vitamins that are healthy for every body!

Blueberries tend to get all the attention these days but other berries are just as nutritious, it's just that nobody has done a lot of berry testing on the others so you don't find them written about as often. I believe one thing that is truly the crux of berries is the tiny seeds within the berry. Berries, most commonly, Blackberries have been used for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe they are very important in preventing problems.

Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA's, just as effective as other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the Intestinal system with disseminating the nutrients through out the body as well as its ability to move along toxins before they can damage the body, and the faster this happens the better for your health. Speedy removal of toxins and dissemination of nutrients happen when the intestines contain the proper amounts of probiotic bacteria and the proper fiber is introduced, and these tiny little seeds move things along swiftly.

EFA's and Your Health

Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha linolenic and oleic acids. 1997 studies (Johansson et al) found that these EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of 22 common edible wild northern berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma tocopherol as well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995). Red Raspberries have shown to have the highest levels of ellagic acid but is of sufficient quantity in all tiny seed bearing berries.

Grandma's Berry Cobbler

Set Oven to 375º before you start process.

Pastry for 1 pie:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick butter at room temperature
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons ice cold water
Yield: 6 - 8 servings

Berry Filling:

4 cups blackberries or berry of your choice with the exception of strawberries?
1 1/4 cups sugar
4 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup water
1/4 stick butter

Prepare pastry: Put flour, salt, butter, and oil into a bowl and mix with pastry mixer or with fork until shortening is the size of small peas. Add ice water and mix to pastry consistency. Refrigerate while preparing filling.
Wash and cap berries; drain. Combine berries, sugar, flour, and water, and place half of the berry mixture in oven-proof 9" x 9" x 2" baking dish.

Roll out pastry on floured board and cut into 3/4" strips. Place small side pieces of pastry into berry mixture add second half of berries. Arrange rest of pastry strips on top of berries in a criss-cross fashion and top with dots of butter or margarine, sprinkle lightly with sugar.

Bake at 375º until crust is golden brown. Serve hot with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.

Sadly food alone will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Read the 1936 Report

MAMMOGRAPHY - THE HIDDEN DOWNSIDE, PART TWO

Mammography Does Not Predict Cure

Before a breast malignancy becomes detectable by mammography it has typically been present for 8 years.

It is also worth remembering that simply because a tumor is detected by mammography does not necessarily mean that it will be cured. For example, half of the breast cancer deaths recorded in two important Swedish studies of screening were among women whose tumors had first been discovered by mammography (Duffy 1991).

Consider this: while 6 out of 1,000 50-year old women may die in the next 10 years if they do not have mammography, as many as 4 in 1,000 will still die even though they have had regular mammograms. The benefit conferred by mammography for this group of 1,000 women therefore works out to just 2 lives saved over a period of 10 years.

Mammography is also not very sensitive, particularly for younger women. In younger women the breast tissue tends to be denser than it is in postmenopausal women, making the recorded film image much more difficult to interpret. This in turn can lead to an increased likelihood of misinterpretation of the radiographic image. The same is true of a substantial proportion of postmenopausal women who are taking estrogen supplements or hormone replacement therapy. These supplements can increase breast density, making mammograms just as hard to read as those of younger women with dense breast tissue.

The advent of digital mammography, in which the traditional X-ray film is replaced by a digitized, computer-enhanced image of the breast, may make the imaging of denser breast tissue more accurate, and according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2005 this technique has already shown itself to be better than traditional film mammography at identifying suspicious lesions in women with radiographically dense breast tissue (Pisano 2005).

Mammography has a high false positive rate ? that is, an area may be labeled suspicious, and further tests, including biopsy (the removal and examination of a sample of tissue for diagnostic purposes), may be initiated, only to find that it was a false alarm, and there is no abnormality. Mammography, in other words, is by no means fail-safe, and over time, a very significant number of women who undergo mammography will experience at least one false positive test. One study found that if 32 million American women aged 40 to 79 years old received breast cancer screening annually for 10 years, 16 million of those women would have at least one false positive mammogram ? i.e., the chance of a woman receiving a false positive test over 10 years of regular mammography is around 60 percent (Elmore1998).

If you have ever been through one or more of these "false alarms" you will know the psychological harm that they do. Your life, and often that of your entire family, is put in abeyance, as you hold your breath awaiting the verdict of the radiologists and pathologists in your case. This agony can go on for weeks.

The chance of a false positive is compounded by the human factor: all mammograms must be 'read' (i.e., interpreted) by a radiologist, and for many reasons (not least the fear of litigation) a radiologist may err on the side of over-diagnosis, thus adding to the probability of a false positive reading. In one study, for example, almost 60 percent of responding radiologists reported that their awareness of the potential for lawsuits moderately to greatly increased the number of their recommendations for further tests, including breast biopsies (Elmore 2005).

Abnormal mammograms are far more common in the US than elsewhere in the world: approximately 11 percent of all mammograms are declared abnormal in the US versus only 2 to 5 percent in Europe. This is not because breast abnormalities are more common in the US than elsewhere, but because there is a marked tendency to over-diagnose breast cancer in this country.

Furthermore, skill at reading mammograms varies widely depending on the particular setting in which the mammogram is performed. In the best teaching hospitals and large cancer centers radiologists may well come up to higher standards of excellence than they do in the setting of community health and screening centers. A 2002 New York Times article on this subject exposed some alarming disparities between the two settings (Moss 2002).
