As the week begins I find myself sad for my sister and many others who haven't the courage to stand up to the traditional world of medicine and say; "Hey, it's my body and I will choose what will be done to it and until you can show me figures that your choice gives me the greatest chance of survival I will not follow your path!" She, as many others do and have done, was brow beaten into the cut/burn/poison mode of cancer treatment for her colon cancer that only gives her a 40% chance of beating it and is now awaiting the removal of her colon and will live the rest of her life with a colostomy bag, extreme fatigue, depression, throwing up and wishing she were dead as well as a 60% chance the treatment will kill her. She was so positive and upbeat about the alternative protocol that would have given her an 80% chance of beating the cancer but is now in a depressed state but her family's fears and the oncologists won and she loses... If only you could talk to the people I do and listen to those who have beaten or are beating severe illness every day with alternative natural treatments you could under stand my heavy heart.... I hope your day will be more upbeat than mine, as I will take a day to be sad then back to work to try and help people with courage who want to be helped!

Meningitis Shot May Hold Higher GBS Risk

ATLANTA (AP) - Young people who get a new meningitis shot may be at a slightly higher risk of developing a paralyzing side effect, federal researchers said Thursday.

Even so, federal health officials said the benefits far outweigh the risk of getting the rare condition, Guillain-Barre syndrome. They are not backing off their recommendation that most students be vaccinated.

The researchers cautioned that they are uncertain about their risk estimate, and a larger study is being planned.

They found the added risk was 1.25 cases of GBS for every 1 million doses of vaccine distributed.

"It's a very small risk," said one of the study's authors, Dr. Robert Davis of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who noted the risk of getting meningitis without the shot is far greater.

A federal vaccination advisory committee is to discuss the research next week when it takes a new look at the government's meningitis vaccine recommendations, CDC officials said.

The research was reported Thursday in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The vaccine, Menactra, is made by Sanofi Pasteur, which said it tested it in more than 10,000 people. The company reported no cases of Guillain-Barre, or GBS, which is characterized by increasing weakness in the legs and arms, sometimes severe enough to cause paralysis.

The government approved the vaccine for marketing in January 2005, and the CDC recommended it for routine vaccination four months later.

About 6.6 million doses had been distributed through the end of September, according to Sanofi.

The CDC recommends the vaccine for students when they enter high school and college. In particular, college freshmen living in dorms are urged to get the shot because close contact is a major risk in the spread of bacterial meningitis. People ages 15 to 24 have some of the highest mortality rates. Survivors can suffer mental disabilities, hearing loss and paralysis.

Between March 2005 and September 2006, 17 people who developed GBS within six weeks of receiving the vaccine. Fifteen of those were 11 to 19 years old.

Scientists expect a small number of GBS cases to occur naturally, so the researchers calculated an expected rate of cases and compared it to the rate in the vaccinated people.

Death or serious illness from bacterial meningitis occurs at an annual rate of about 1.2 cases per 100,000 youths ages 11 to 19, said Davis, director of the CDC's immunization safety office.

That means the risk of an unvaccinated youth getting seriously ill from bacterial meningitis is about 10 times greater than the risk of a vaccinated youth developing GBS, according to the study.

The study data is believed to be flawed, however, in part because GBS reports are voluntary, meaning vaccine side effects may be underreported. Also, the natural rate of GBS is based on hospital data that may be flawed, Davis said.

A larger study that would give a more accurate picture of the risk is being discussed with the vaccine maker, Davis said.

As for the new CDC study, "we think the data are inconclusive" and should be interpreted cautiously, said Dr. Gregory Gilmet, Sanofi Pasteur's medical director of medical affairs.

The Dirty Root That We Love!

My husband carried in a bag filled with this nasty looking dirty roots but I knew immediately that when cleaned up and peeled would be the tasty vegetable we love known to us as a Jicama..

Jicama belongs to the legume or bean family (Fabaceae) as it's grown under a vine like beans. It is a popular dietary staple in Latin America and widely grown in Mexico and Central America also grown in South Texas... There are many names for Jicama including: the Mexican potato, Mexican yam bean, ahipa, saa got, Chinese turnip, lo bok, and the Chinese potato.

Jicama looks similar to a turnip or a large white radish, and it can be used as an alternative to the water chestnut. Its skin is thin and can be gray, tan, or brown in color. Additionally, it has a single short root and contains white flesh. The skin is typically peeled before eating or cooking. Raw jicama is juicy and tastes similar to a pear or apple. It also does not discolor when exposed to the open air for awhile. Because of this, raw jicama is often used as an accompaniment to raw vegetable platters. When jicama is used in cooking, as with mushrooms or tofu, it tends to take on the flavors of the ingredients that it is being combined with. Therefore, jicama, is a nice complement to various stir-fry dishes because it blends well with many vegetables and seasonings.

A very versatile vegetable that contains a high amount of vitamin C, is low in sodium, and has no fat. One adult serving of jicama, which is equal to approximately 1 cup of cubed jicama or 120 grams, also contains only 45 calories. Rich in the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese. Also contains the vitamins; A, E, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, B-6, Folate and B-12.

Jicama is available year-round... When purchasing jicama, select tubers that are firm and have dry roots. Make sure that the jicama has an unblemished skin and that is not bruised or dry. Once purchased jicama can be stored for weeks in a plastic or paper bag in your refrigerator. However, conversion of starch to sugar will result if stored for excessive periods and should be avoided.

Jicamas are actually perennials and produce their large roots after several years of growth when grown in frost free regions. Other areas may plant in early spring and harvest at first killing frost warning. Jicamas are suitable for consumption at any stage of growth (size). Look for well formed tubers that appear fresh and are free of cracks and bruises.

Preparation - Remove the peel including the fibrous (stringy) flesh directly under the skin. Cut or slice and serve raw or use as a substitute for water chestnuts. Sauté or stir fry -- it stays crisp when cooked. A one pound jicama yields about three cups chopped or three cups shredded flesh.

Our family loves jicama in fresh salads, stir fry dishes as well as raw sliced with fresh sliced tomatoes and cucumbers...

Traditional Allopathic Medicine and Alternative Natural Medicine Agreeing?

Yes, but on one thing only! If a person is ill their immune system is not functioning properly! So if they agree why not treat the same and it would stand to reason that aim would be to rebuild and repair the immune system? Makes sense to me!

Not happening! The treatments that I watched for over twenty years, in the medical offices, taught me that allopathic medicine either cuts, burns or poisons the problem! Treats only symptoms and not the problem itself... Never repairs or rebuilds the immune system? Mostly because it isn't taught in medical school so they don't know how to do that!

The doctor will either give you a prescription that will shut down another part of the body or boost an organ to work more. Or they will surgically remove a part of the body that has been attacked or is weak. Or use radiation to kill the offending area. When its cancer all three are most commonly utilized, but the problem has never been solved with those modes because they further decimate the immune system and hope it will rebuild itself with time. When the immune system is dead the body can't rebuild or repair very efficiently without the proper information? Not given by the doctor? All those years I watched the yo-yo effect brought about with that mentality. Sure a patient felt short term changes in health but it wasn't healing it just slowed the process while another area of the body became weak and showed up as another health problem caused by those modalities! With those treatments they only create more problems later and the immune system can't rebuild with part of the body's organs either suppressed, dead and/or missing! That is not healing!

Natural - some call it alternative - medicine rebuilds and repairs the problem! Natural medicine, when done correctly, will put you on a path to repair and rebuild the immune system so the body can heal itself! The body requires every organ functioning as it was made to function and that has to be done before the immune system can work to the body's advantage and evade or kill an illness. That requires longer to treat but the body can again be whole and healthy and when the immune system works the way our creator made it to work our body will heal itself. Sadly our fast food society does not want to wait and ends up ill for longer and eventual a painful sad death!

Repair and rebuild requires three things; healthy diet, supplements that heal and not shut down another part of the body. Those supplements should be herbs and minerals! Thirdly exercise; the body must be exercised for the rebuilding and repairing process to work its best! The beginning building blocks should be balanced minerals!
