The rheumatology department at a Teaching Hospital in France, decided to study the causes of back pain in children. Researchers had the idea that in 14-year-olds, back pain might be associated with the weight of the schoolbooks carried in a backpack. So, they got 128 eighth-graders to fill out a questionnaire describing the books they carried, and what effect it had on their backs. As reported in the journal Reviews of Rheumatology (English Edition), children started having back pains when their backpacks reached 20 percent of their body weight.

They found something else, too. The children who sat at the very edge of their seats while filling out the questionnaire were more likely to have back pains than those who had a proper sitting posture -- regardless of the number of books they carried to school.

Plant the Focus of Alzheimer's Study

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - A plant used widely in China is the focus of a national clinical trial that aims to see if it could help treat Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

The University of North Carolina Hospitals are participating in the national clinical trial on Chinese club moss, which is already being sold in stores with nutritional supplements and is used in China as a treatment for cognitive disorders.

The study, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, is one of a growing number of federally funded research studies focused on natural and alternative therapies. The centers of the National Institutes of Health expect to spend $300.5 million in complementary and alternative medicine research in the 2007 budget year.

Even with the recent financial commitment, research in that area is limited, making it difficult for doctors to get information that is essential to understanding the risks and benefits of certain treatments.

"That kind of data is completely missing today from most nutraceuticals," said Dr. Daniel Kaufer, a neurologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who is one of the trial's investigators.

Patients in the trial receive either a placebo or dose of Huperzine A - an alkaloid extracted from the plant - that is larger than what's currently available in stores. After the placebo-controlled phase, all patients take doses of Huperzine A for eight weeks and have the option to continue taking it if they believe it's helping.

Investigators test patients' cognitive functions throughout the trial, Kaufer said.

Marion Hinsdale, 83, decided with help from her daughter, Marjorie, to participate in the trial to see if the treatment could help with her memory and cognitive problems.

"Both my mother and I are interested in anything that would be considered homeopathic," said Marjorie Hinsdale, who lives with her mother in Chapel Hill. "The fact that this is a Chinese herb was intriguing to both of us."

While some studies involving natural therapies have been unsuccessful, trials that prove certain therapies work have credibility with consumers and doctors.

"It gets their attention and provides evidence that botanical medicine is very powerful," said Christie Yerby, a Chapel Hill specialist in botanical medicine.

The Hinsdales aren't sure if Huperzine A helped Marion, who decided to keep taking the supplement after completing the first part of the trial.

"We just wanted to contribute in what small way we can," Marjorie Hinsdale said.

LENA'S COMMENT: This sounds good and looks good until you look further and see that they are not using normal dosages therefore will not get the result that should be... Do it right or not at all! This appears to be another ploy to discount natural medicine rather than give it a positive finding...

CDC Urges Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities to Increase Efforts to Reduce Drug-Resistant Infections

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released new guidelines outlining strategies to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections in healthcare settings. The new guidelines seek to halt the rising rates of drug-resistant infections by calling on hospitals and other healthcare facilities to make comprehensive infection control programs a priority and to take aggressive steps to reduces rates of drug resistance.

During the past 30 years, the proportion of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics has steeply risen. Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria change or adapt in a way that allows them to survive in the presence of antibiotics designed to kill them. A good example is the type of bacteria that cause "staph" infections? Staphylococcus aureus. In 1972, only 2 percent of these types of bacteria were drug resistant. By 2004, 63 percent of these types of bacteria had become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat them, and methicillin-resistant "staph" infections, often referred to as MRSA, are a growing problem in hospitals and healthcare facilities such as nursing homes and dialysis centers. In a few cases, bacteria become so resistant that no available antibiotics are effective against them.

"Effective and comprehensive programs to prevent drug-resistant infections are essential to improve patient safety," said Dr. Denise Cardo, director of CDC's Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. "Preventing these types of infections requires a constant and concerted effort on the part of healthcare facilities, but it's important they make this a priority. We need to reduce the number of these serious and potentially life-threatening infections-doing so helps patients get healthy and, most importantly, saves lives."

This new guidance, Management of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Healthcare Settings, was developed by internationally recognized experts in infection control in conjunction with CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC), a committee comprised of external advisors from academic research institutions, public health and healthcare organizations to advise CDC regarding infection control, strategies for healthcare surveillance and prevention of healthcare-associated infections in the United States.

Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities who have weakened immune systems, and often result in bloodstream infections, surgical site infections or pneumonia.

The new guidelines illustrate that in order to prevent and control antibiotic-resistant infections, hospitals and healthcare facilities need to take several steps including:

Ensuring prevention programs are funded and adequately staffed,
Carefully tracking infection rates and related data to monitor the impact of prevention efforts,
Ensuring that staff use standard infection control practices and follow guidelines regarding the correct use of antibiotics,
Promoting best-practices with health education campaigns to increase adherence to established recommendations,
Designing robust prevention programs customized to specific settings and local needs

If those recommendations don't improve rates, healthcare facilities must reevaluate and implement more stringent measures, including screening of all patients at high risk for carrying drug-resistant bacteria to make sure the correct precautions are used for the right patients.

"There's no one size fits all solution," said Dr. Patrick J. Brennan, chair of CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. "Prevention of drug-resistant infections requires a full complement of actions tailored to the local setting."

LENA'S COMMENT: They still don't get the reason behind all this is their "never changing" attitude of man has the answers when he doesn't. Only when antibiotic usage as now practiced is changed will the accelerated rate of mega bacteria stop! It's like shutting the gate after the cows are gone! Since the bugs are out of the pen it's best to stay out of the hospital!!!
