Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
We are being told to
expect smoke from the California fires to make its way to us sometime in
the next few days. That means a lot of asthma and C.O.P.D. patients will
be in ER due to the smoke, no where near the number that California
hospitals are seeing but more than enough. We can never escape from
another person's problems! It's a fact of life just as going into the
supermarket and within 24 to 72 hours you could very well suffer from
sniffles and sneezes created by that visit to the store. That scenario
can be prevented if you keep your immune system built up to it's
strongest action...

Something To Think About

Drug Companies' Ties
to Schools Common
Oct 16, 2007
By LINDSEY TANNER
CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly two-thirds of academic leaders surveyed at U.S.
medical schools and teaching hospitals have financial ties to industry,
illustrating how pervasive these relationships have become, researchers
say.
Serving as paid consultants or accepting industry money for free meals
and drinks were among the most common practices reported by the heads of
academic departments.
Drug companies and makers of medical devices often use these connections
to influence doctors to use products that aren't necessarily in the
patient's best interest, said Eric Campbell, the study's lead author. He
is a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical
School.
Since academic department heads set the tone for appropriate conduct at
their institutions, their actions signal to medical students and others
that this is appropriate behavior, Campbell said.
The survey went to all 125 accredited medical schools and the nation's
15 largest teaching hospitals. About two-thirds of the department heads
responded. The study gave no specific examples, nor did it name any
institutions.
Many studies have examined doctor ties to drug companies. Campbell
co-authored research last year that found company ties were common among
hospital review boards that oversee experiments on patients.
The new study shows that drug companies "are involved in every aspect of
medical care," Campbell said.
Overall, 60 percent of department heads reported some type of personal
financial relationship with industry. More than one-quarter - 27 percent
- said they had recently served as a paid consultant. The same
percentage reported serving on a company scientific advisory board; and
21 percent who headed departments of medical specialties closely related
to patient care said they had served on speakers' bureaus for industry.
The results appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical
Association.
Alan Goldhammer of the industry group, Pharmaceutical Research and
Manufacturers of America, said the study results don't mean these
relationships are a problem. He said it makes sense to reach out to
academic heads because they have the most expertise.
But Dr. Jerome Kassirer, a former New England Journal of Medicine editor
and frequent critic of industry influence over doctors, called the study
eye-opening.
"I was appalled by the results," Kassirer said. "No one knew that so
many chairs of medicine and psychiatry were paid speakers. We've never
had that data before."
He noted that financial ties can benefit patients when they are related
to research or other scientific purposes that increase doctors'
education or lead to the development of better drugs or medical
products.
But they are dangerous when doctors are so beholden to the company that
they withhold safety concerns or push the newest or most expensive
products when they aren't necessarily best for the patient, Kassirer
said.
The researchers sent surveys last year to 688 department heads at all
125 accredited U.S. medical schools and the 15 largest teaching
hospitals. A total of 459 people responded, or 67 percent. Included were
departments closely related to patient care, such as surgery or
anesthesiology, and "nonclinical" departments more closely related to
basic science.
Among those in charge of departments related to patient care, 65 percent
said their departments had recently accepted industry money for
continuing medical education; half reported recently getting industry
money for food or drinks; 30 percent reported getting money for travel
and meetings.
Overall, 67 percent said their departments had received some type
industry money.
Fewer than 10 percent of chairs with personal financial relationships
said those ties had any negative effects.
Dr. David Korn, a senior vice president at the Association of American
Medical Colleges, which helped conduct the study, said the results
aren't surprising or necessarily cause for concern.
Medical schools generally have policies governing relationships with
industry to "make sure that they remained principled," Korn said.
"There is a real need to have good exchanges of information" between
medical schools and industry, Korn said. "After all, when a new product
is approved," the maker "knows about it better than anyone else."
Still, "gifting and favoring" are problematic, he said, and an
association task force is examining the issue.

without prejudice if this is the atmosphere he/she was educated in? If
you are steady reader of this ezine or have been involved with any of my

the traditional medical world. I'm not, but I am a realist and realize
that unless I have broken bones or require test to determine a diagnosis
I stay away from that world, which keeps me healthy! I don't want the

ESTIMATES 94,000 INVASIVE DRUG-RESISTANT STAPH INFECTIONS OCCURRED IN
THE U.S. IN 2005
Methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) caused more than 94,000
life-threatening infections and nearly 19,000 deaths in the United
States in 2005, most of them associated with health care settings. A
recent study found about 85 percent of all invasive MRSA infections were
associated with health care settings, of which two-thirds surfaced in
the community among people who were hospitalized, underwent a medical
procedure or resided in a long-term care facility within the previous
year.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
A July 2007 paper in the
American Journal of Cardiology has introduced an important new perspective on
the issue of statins and cancer (Alsheikh-Ali 2007).
The study, carried out by Dr. Richard Karas and colleagues at
Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, was designed to examine whether
there was any relationship between a patient's blood level of LDL and that
patient's risk of cancer. The study also looked at two other statin-related
adverse effects: elevated liver enzymes and a rare - but potentially serious -
muscular side effect known as rhabdomyolysis.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the Tufts researchers found that the dosage of statins
had a direct influence on the likelihood and severity of adverse effects, with
higher dosages being associated with an increased incidence of such effects.
However, Karas and his team also discovered that the lower the blood level of
LDL achieved through the use of statins, the greater the risk of cancer. The
researchers observed "a significant and linear relationship" between LDL levels
and the risk of developing a new cancer, an effect that was especially marked at
LDL levels below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
As cardiovascular disease specialist Dr. Thomas Pearson of the Department of
Rochester School of Medicine, NY pointed out, it has been known since at least
the 1970s - before statins were even invented or LDL became a household term -
that cancer risk was heightened in patients with the lowest cholesterol levels.
Indeed, conventional medical wisdom at that time said that when a patient's
cholesterol levels were seen to fall significantly over a short period of time,
a cancer diagnosis often followed.
These are frightening words, and about the last thing that cardiologists and
their patients want to hear, since current recommendations specify that the
optimal target level of LDL for cardiovascular benefit should be less than
100mg/dL. And now there has been a recent push to drive optimum LDL levels even
lower than are currently recommended. In April 2004, some leading cardiologists
called for a target reduction of LDL to 65 mg/dL, to be achieved by taking up to
80 mg per day of Lipitor. Although this recommendation grew out of a study that
tested this thesis only in patients with severe cardiovascular disease who were
already hospitalized because of a ruptured plaque in their coronary arteries,
many doctors were quick to apply these findings to patients in general.
LENA'S COMMENT: Some "leading Cardiologist" but guess
where they got their information? Who came to the decision to lower
cholesterol below 100? Not the medical world but the drug companies own
so-called physicians.... Who writes their paychecks? Even though the drug
companies have tried to quiet the cancer risks in taking their statin drug
findings, with nonsensical rhetoric, the truth of the matter is that low
cholesterol is dangerous to your health and I've been telling you that for
years... Cholesterol is not a risk to heart disease or stroke, as their own
literature packed with the drugs, tell you... So does taking cholesterol
lowering medications make sense? Not to me, unless your cholesterol is over 300
then it might be something to consider lowering but not by taking statin drugs
unless you want to kill your heart and liver...

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Punica proto-punica
aka pomegranate, Granada (Spanish), Grenade (French).
Our tree was frozen out this year so we didn't hove our
own organic fruit. When in the grocery store yesterday I saw the largest
delectable looking pomegranates I've seen in a long time, so either they
were fed farm steroids (fertilizers) or someone really knows how to grow
them... I didn't buy them for that reason.
This round reddish/purple fruit is sitting in markets these day in large
quantities and something you should consider as a health food!
The pomegranate a native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India
and cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since
ancient times. It is widely cultivated throughout India and the drier
parts of Southeast Asia, Malaya, East Indies and tropical Africa. The
tree was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Now
grown for its fruits mainly in the drier parts of California and
Arizona.
Granted,
those seeds are a bit messy and can stain clothes unmercifully, but the
unique sweet taste and health benefits are well worth it. Recent
research to identify foods high in antioxidants have brought the
pomegranate into the forefront of the antioxidants with its high levels
of polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins -- all thought to be
important parts of our cancer-prevention arsenal. Food seeds of all
kinds are rich in fiber - including the pomegranate - making for a
healthy intestinal system. "Prostate, breast, and colon cancer rates
are higher in populations consuming relatively large quantities of meat
and lower in populations whose diet is rich in "seed foods."
Journal of the American Medical Association
The pomegranate tree is a neat, rounded shrub or small tree that can
grow to 20 or 30 ft., but more typically to 12 to 16 ft. in height.
Dwarf varieties are also known. The trunk is covered by a red-brown bark
which later becomes gray. Pomegranates are also long-lived. There are
specimens in Europe that are known to be over 200 years of age. The
vigor of a pomegranate declines after about 15 years, however.
The pomegranate fruit is almost a perfect round, 2-1/2 to 5 in. wide
fruit with a crowned base known as a calyx. The tough, leathery skin or
rind is typically yellow underneath and overlaid with light or deep pink
or rich red. The inner fruits are separated by membranous walls and
white, spongy, bitter tissue into compartments packed with sacs filled
with sweetly acid, juicy, red, pink or whitish pulp. In each sac there
is one angular, soft or hard seed.
Pomegranate is a delicious fruit, which has many potential beneficial
compounds. Pomegranate has substances, such as polyphenols, that have
antioxidant, anti-viral, and anti-tumor activity. Rich in the minerals
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper
and Selenium along with Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, total ascorbic
acid Thiamin Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic
acid making for a very healthy food! Pomegranate may also be helpful in
maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin reported that a pomegranate
extract inhibited skin tumors in mice, while the red wine compound
reseveratrol, applied topically, inhibited the expression of a
cancer-causing protein normally caused by exposure to UVB rays.
Pomegranate fruit extract (PFE) contains several polyphenols and
anthocyanidins (pigment that gives certain fruits their dark red color),
which demonstrates a higher antioxidant activity than that of red
wine and green tea, according to the Wisconsin researchers.
Seed removal tip: Cut out the blossom end, remove some of the
white pith, but do not break the red pulp around the seeds. Score the
skin into quarters. Break the pomegranate into halves and then halve
again following score lines. Bend back the rind and pull out the seeds.
Uses of the pomegranate;
The juice gives a unique fresh flavor to sauces and marinades for fish,
chicken, and beef. Use the seeds to garnish fruit salad, dessert, and
appetizers. Pomegranate juice is the original ingredient in Grenadine
although contemporary manufacturers may utilize a synthetic.
The seeds and crimson pulp may be added to fruit salad for a touch of
color and flavor.
To extract the juice, separate and crush the edible portion of ripe
pomegranates (do not remove seeds at this point). Place fruit in jelly
cloth or bag and squeeze out the juice, or cut the fruit in quarters and
juice with a juicer. Most juicers will automatically extract the juice
and discard the seeds.
The juice can be frozen in 1/2 pint or 1 pint containers, to make into
punch later on.
Pomegranate Syrup is absolutely fantastic with pancakes, waffles
or French toast... To make it; Boil together 3 1/2 cups
pomegranate juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/3 teaspoon salt and 1/2
bottle liquid pectin. When mixture cannot be stirred down, add 5 1/2
cups sugar (Stevia equivalent will work) and boil for 5 or 6 minutes.
Enjoy your red seed food!

AFTER YEARS
OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ("TRY" IS
THE KEY WORD) AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHN HOPKINS IS FINALLY
STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .
Cancer Update from John Hopkins
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells
do not show up in the standard
tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors
tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in
their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable
to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the
detectable size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
person's lifetime
3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells
will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming
tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune
system.
6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer
cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the
bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ
damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.
7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and
damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and
radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.
9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and
radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed,
hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and
complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate
and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also
cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
CANCER CELLS FEED ON:
a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off
one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes
like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and
it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey
or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a
chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is
Bragg's aminos or sea salt.
b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off
milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells
are being starved.
c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet
is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken
rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.
d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an
alkaline environment.About 20% can be from cooked food including
beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are
easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15
minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To
obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink
fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean
sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes
are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).
e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine.Green tea is a better alternative and has
cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water,
or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.
12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines
become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.
13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to
attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's
killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.
14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6,
Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs
etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer
cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause
apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of
disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.
15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A
proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a
survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into
a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and
forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.
16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen
down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means
employed to destroy cancer cells.

Poor Indoor
Air Quality May Worsen Lung Disease
by Amy Norton
October 22, 2007
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A smog-filled sky can make it hard
to breathe, but air pollution in the home may also be hard on
people with lung disease, researchers have found.
In a study of 148 adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), investigators found that those who lived in
homes with poor air quality tended to have worse symptoms.
Cigarette smoke was the major air-polluting culprit.
"The importance of knowing this for people with COPD and their
families is that indoor smoking is under our control," lead
study author Dr. Liesl M. Osman told Reuters Health.
"We can immediately very much improve air quality by stopping
smoking in the home," said Osman, a senior research fellow at
the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
COPD includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, two serious lung
diseases frequently caused by smoking. Breathing in other
irritants, such as polluted outdoor air, can contribute to or
exacerbate COPD, but less is known about the importance of
household air pollution.
To investigate, Osman's team measured air quality in the homes
of 148 Scottish adults with severe COPD. They also questioned
them about their respiratory symptoms and smoking habits.
Thirty-nine percent of the subjects were smokers and 49 percent
lived in a household where someone smoked.
In general, the researchers found, patients' homes had high
levels of particulate matter -- the fine airborne particles that
constitute pollution. Smokers' homes had especially high
concentrations.
Homes with the highest levels of particulate matter exceeded the
maximum levels recommended by the EPA by about four-fold.
Overall, the greater the level of particulate matter was, the
worse patients' COPD symptoms were.
A number of factors, including outdoor air pollution, can affect
indoor air quality, according to Osman. However, the current
findings show that smoking is "a big contributor," she noted.
"Our study shows that environmental tobacco smoke exposure
worsens symptoms among people with COPD," Osman said. It's
reasonable to assume that poor indoor air quality also worsens
the long-term prognosis for COPD patients, she added, but
long-range studies are needed to confirm this.
