Vitamin D May Help Arthritic Knees Function Better
October 22, 2004
NEW YORK - Boston researchers report a link between low serum levels of
vitamin D and decreased knee function in patients with osteoarthritis of
the knee.
At the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in San
Antonio, Dr. David Felson of Boston University presented his team's
findings from 221 subjects recruited from the Boston VA Medical Center.
All had knee arthritis and reported knee pain on most days in the month
before they joined the study.
The investigators measured blood levels of vitamin D at the start and
again after 15 and 30 months. They compared change in vitamin D levels
with changes in knee pain, physical function and muscle strength during
the 30-month study period.
"We found a relationship between serum levels of vitamin D and knee
function," lead investigator Dr. Kristin Baker told Reuters Health. Low
levels were associated with higher levels of pain and disability and to
a lesser extent muscle weakness.
"We also found that about 50 percent of the population were deficient in
vitamin D," Baker commented.
In previous studies conducted in Minnesota, "almost 100 percent of the
subjects with muscle pain were vitamin D deficient," she added. "It may
be that vitamin D increases muscle strength or decreases postural sway,
we don't really know."
Baker pointed out that this was not a study of vitamin D as a treatment
for osteoarthritis, but she speculated that "we may need higher serum
levels of vitamin D than we originally thought...This is one more piece
of evidence that vitamin D intake should be increased."
LENA'S NOTE: Haven't I been telling you that "daily sunlight on

Teeny Tiny Seedy Nutrients!
Unlocking of the almost unlimited healing power of the foods we eat
every day is an uphill battle for those of us in the war against
disease. Fast food has so adulterated our eating that we no longer look
on foods with the same eye as times past. Today more and more studies
are showing the benefits of raw and healthy foods yet we are not seeing
enough of it in the mainstream media. And if you think about it, the
medical establishment has always known -- and accepted -- that bad foods
can make you sick. Yet these "experts" are as slow as molasses in
accepting the flip side of the coin, namely, that GOOD foods can make
you well! Doctors almost never mention foods unless it in relation to
the cholesterol myth.
Today I'm going to try and continue the premise of educating people on
good foods in relation to health.
These teeny tiny little seeds are great illnesses preventions and or
healers!
Even though berry season is past in most areas you can still find them
in stores both frozen and fresh. Berries are usually seed bearing and
those seeds are important to our health.
I keep packages of different kinds of frozen berries in my freezer for
my cobbler craving winter days. I grew up eating my grandmother's
fantastic berry cobblers and they still remain my favorite. Strawberries
make their way onto our table in the form of shortcake in strawberry
season and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to
fruit punch the rest of the year. Replacing sweets as treats year round.
Kids love berries frozen whole to eat like candy and make for a healthy
body and strong teeth.
Berries, such as blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries,
strawberries and the likes, contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up
their mystic. These little berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants.
The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types.
Loaded with minerals and vitamins that are healthy for every body!
Blueberries tend to get all the attention these days but other berries
are just as nutritious, it's just that nobody has done a lot of berry
testing on the others so you don't find them written about as often. I
believe one thing that is truly the crux of berries is the tiny seeds
within the berry. Berries, most commonly, Blackberries have been used
for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe
they are very important in preventing problems.
Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new
life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of
life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA?s, just as effective as
other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection
against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the
Intestinal system with disseminating the nutrients through out the body
as well as its ability to move along toxins before they can damage the
body, and the faster this happens the better for your health. Speedy
removal of toxins and dissemination of nutrients happen when the
intestines contain the proper amounts of probiotic bacteria and the
proper fiber is introduced, and these tiny little seeds move things
along swiftly.
EFA's and Your Health
Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha
linolenic and oleic acids. 1997 studies (Johansson et al) found that
these EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of 22 common edible wild
northern berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma
tocopherol as well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich
composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative
disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of
ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated
primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research
programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit
the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of
rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995). Red Raspberries have shown to have the
highest levels of ellagic acid but is of sufficient quantity in all tiny
seed bearing berries.

Grandma's Blackberry Cobbler
Set Oven to 375º before you start
process.
Get out 9" x 9" x 2" oven proof baking dish
Make Pastry for 1 pie:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick butter at room temperature
1/4 cup all-vegetable shortening
3 tablespoons ice cold water
Yield: 6 - 8 servings
Berry Filling:
4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries or berry of your choice
(Strawberries don't work
very well)
1 1/4 cups sugar (prefer brown or turbinado)
4 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup water
1/4 stick butter
Prepare pastry: Put flour, salt, butter, and shortening into a bowl and
mix with pastry mixer or with fork until shortening is the size of small
peas. Add ice water and mix to pastry consistency. Refrigerate while
preparing filling.
Wash and cap berries; drain. Combine berries, sugar, flour, and water,
and gently mix until berries coated well.
Roll out pastry thin on floured board and cut into 3/4" strips. Put 1/2
berry mixture in oven-proof 9" x 9" x 2" baking dish. mixture place a
few pastry strips on top of berries, add second half of berries. Arrange
rest of pastry strips on top of berries in a criss-cross fashion and top
with dots of butter or margarine, sprinkle lightly with sugar.
Bake at 375º until crust is golden
brown. Serve hot with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
Sadly food alone will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so
we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of
nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air
pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Read the 1936

Caesarean Birth May Raise Allergy Risk in
Babies
October 22, 2004
LONDON - Being born by Caesarean section may increase a baby's
risk of suffering from food allergies and diarrhea in the first
year of life, German doctors said yesterday.
Researchers at the Children's Hospital at Ludwig-Maximilians
University in Munich found the babies delivered by Caesarean
section were twice as likely to be sensitive to cow's milk and
other food allergens than infants born naturally.
"We found an association between Caesarean delivery and
diarrhoea and sensitisation in infants with a family history of
allergy," Dr Sibylle Koletzko said in a report in the journal
Archives of Disease in Childhood.
The scientists followed the development of 865 babies for a
year. Nearly 150, or 17 percent, had been delivered by Caesarean
section.
The researchers suspect that in babies born by Caesarean section
the colonisation of natural bacteria in the gut which promotes
health and plays an important role in the immune system response
is delayed or altered by a Caesarean birth.
Koletzko called for more research into the impact of Caesarean
section delivery on infant health because it is becoming

Nigerian tribe gives Shell an ultimatum
October 22, 2004
PORT HARCOURT - Nigeria's Ogoni tribe has threatened mass action against
the local unit of Royal Dutch Shell if the oil giant fails to withdraw
troops from the area within seven days.
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) said the
troops were deployed to protect Shell's facilities and speed up its
return to oilfields it abandoned in 1993.
Shell has denied deploying the troops and said it was not in a hurry to
return to Ogoniland, where it was accused of supporting military
operations against activists in the 1990s.
Tension has heightened in the Niger delta from where most of Nigeria's
oil is pumped since September after the Niger Delta People's Volunteer
Force threatened to blow-up oil facilities.
"SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company) should within seven days ...
withdraw the forces, stop further acts of hostility such as attempts to
resume operation," MOSOP president Ledum Mitee said in a statement
yesterday.
Mitee added that "SPDC shall be held accountable for the consequences of
the non-violent action."
Tension rose in Ogoniland after a spill early this month, from the
24-inch Trans-Niger pipeline which carries crude from oilfields to
Shell's Bonny export terminal damaged crops and polluted creeks.
Shell, Nigeria's biggest producer accounting for nearly half of the
world's eighth largest exporter's output of around 2.5 million barrels
per day, said the pipeline was vandalised.
"It is not Shell's responsibility to deploy security forces. It is the
responsibility of government," Shell said yesterday.
"Shell is not in a hurry to return to Ogoniland without due consultation
with all stakeholders," a company statement said.
The government has agreed to a truce with the Ijaw-based militia led by
Mujahid Dokubo-Asari who is pressing for the withdrawal of troops from
the impoverished region, autonomy and a bigger share of oil revenues.
Negotiations between the government and the rebels are still going on in
the capital Abuja.
The rebels, who had fought sporadic battles with troops since last year,
asked expatriates to leave the delta ahead of what Asari described as an
"all-out war on the Nigerian state".
Oil prices shot above $50 per barrel for the first time on the threat,
as dealers saw a further tightening of already precarious global oil
supplies.
Shell which has been blamed for environmental degradation in Ogoniland,
is facing a class-action suit that accuses the company of supporting
military operations by Nigeria's former government against the Ogoni in
the 1990s.
The highpoint of the operations was the execution in 1995 of Ogoni
campaigner and writer Ken Saro-Wiwa by the late dictator Sani Abacha's
government.
