The only other approved drug available for children
suffering from juvenile arthritis is Enbrel, which is known to
trigger rare complications such as lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic
system.
As early as 1999, both Merck and the FDA had strong hints about the
cardiovascular risks associated with the drug. Merck's "wonder drug" was
turning out to be anything but a wonder.
Many Merck critics claim the company had plenty of warning signs, yet
continued advertising for the drug regardless. Despite concerns, the
company proceeded with the pediatric test, which lasted a mere three
months, and sent the drug on its way to thousands of suffering children.
One spokeswoman for Merck claims that information about heart risks were
printed on the label. According to studies, the label being referred to
is the fine-print package insert, which is rarely read.
One FDA researcher found evidence of cardiovascular disorders associated
with Vioxx use. Before the drug was approved for children, he reported
his findings at a medical conference. However, FDA officials ignored the
study, stating it was not considered the "gold-standard" by the
pharmaceutical industry. Thus, the evidence was not strong enough to
deter approval for pediatric use.

Medical Journal to Be Available Online

WASHINGTON (AP) - A new online medical journal will make its research
articles available to the public free of charge and accessible through
the Internet.
The Public Library of Science Medicine (PLoS Medicine) was launched
earlier this month and will be available to physicians, patients,
scientists and anyone with Internet access.
The journal provides "health care personnel, their patients, and the
citizens who have paid for much of the research with new findings from
credible, peer-reviewed sources," said Nobel Prize winner Harold Varmus,
a former director of the National Institutes of Health and chairman of
PLoS' 11-member board of directors.
Readers will be able to copy and distribute the articles for teaching or
personal purposes and thereby further expand the reach of the research.
The directors hope that people in poor countries or scientists at small
research colleges will be able to benefit from medical research that
otherwise would be unavailable without an expensive subscription.
To bypass the need for subscriptions, the journal will charge scientists
$1,500 per article to publish their findings. The articles will be
peer-reviewed by other scientists, just as the more traditional medical
and science journals are.
The journal received financial support from groups including the Gordon
and Betty Moore Foundation and the Sandler Family Supporting Foundation.
PLoS Executive Director Vivian Siegel said that the journal will be
self-supporting within five years.
The founders started an open access journal based on the same concept in
October 2003- PLoS Biology has articles available on the Internet.
LENA'S NOTE: On the surface this sounds great! BUT, this gives the
drug companies a great platform to publish tests that are less than
credible. They only pay $1500 but make billions from the publicity, just
another platform for selling their chemicals. This is no better than
what already exists at the
www.fda.gov I will not buy into this as good!

That golden treasure full of taste and health!
It's that time of year again. The warm, comforting smell
of spicy pumpkin pies and muffins fills our homes, and our summer floral
centerpieces are replaced by playful displays of pumpkins and gourds. A
member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not really
sure about? A fruit? Gourds are supposed to be in the squash family I
thought and since pumpkin is also listed by many as a gourd I don't know
about the fruit aspect. Take this tidbit for what it's worth? I'm
simply telling you what I've found reported in some writer's and
university extensions.
Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the
Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and pronounced by the
French as "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."
Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor.
American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The
"pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter
Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention
in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a decor. Most assuredly
is much greater for eating!
Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They
also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The
origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin
top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and
honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Now that sounds really
good to me and I'm going to try it if I can find one small enough for
two. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie crust and not a filling.
The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is
loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is
one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the
conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions
in overall health.
Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing
beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer
and offers protect against heart disease. Beta-carotene offers
protection against other diseases as well.
Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup boiled and drained,
without salt - contains;
Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3
grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg,
Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg,
Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my
youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns
every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them.
Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found
recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed
pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. May do
that one day.
Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake
bites, of which I am a bit skeptical that it worked very well? No
history to know for sure?
Native American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and
watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma
tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine,
while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and
pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the
ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills,"
and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel
worms.
Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and
intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four Greater Cold
Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today pumpkin is employed to
treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints, namely benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic,
and the seeds' principal constituent, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit
the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The presence of
zinc and amino acids further treat BPH. Pumpkin is not said to reduce
prostate enlargement but to relieve symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are
also thought to help relieve dizziness.
Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are
particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children,
for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The
seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American
herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system
problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to
the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages
of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve
intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for
burns.
So these gold globes have many uses and medicinal content. Eat and enjoy
the traditional pumpkin pie.
My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins
great health inducing nutrients;
Makes two pies
1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg
2 - 9" pie crusts
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high
until smooth and creamy, about four minutes. Stop the machine every once
in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's
blades. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a
light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps of tofu.
Pour into uncooked pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not
burned).
PS: Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I
will line the outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and
bake. Gives a slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?

'Mad' Honey Can Be a Hazard to the Heart

NEW YORK - The cases of 19 patients sent to the emergency room
by a dose of "mad" honey highlight the not-so-sweet side of the
food, according to Turkish researchers.
The honey, produced from the nectar of certain rhododendron
species, has long been linked to food poisoning, with most of
the documented cases occurring in Turkey. In the country's Black
Sea region, mad honey is used as an alternative medicine for
gastrointestinal problems and as a sexual stimulant.
However, the honey can contain substances called grayanotoxins,
some of which may cause low blood pressure, slowed heart rate,
vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms.
In the 19 cases reported in the November issue of the Emergency
Medicine Journal, most patients had dips in blood pressure and
heart rate, and all suffered nausea, vomiting, dizziness and
weakness. Four had a complete atrioventricular block, in which
electrical signals fail to pass normally from the heart's upper
chambers to the lower ones.
The patients, all seen in one ER in 2002, responded well to
treatment with the drug atropine, said lead study author Dr.
Hakan Ozhan, of Abant Izzet Baysal University of Duzce.
Although most instances of poisoning by mad honey have occurred
in Turkey, rhododendron species in other countries also have the
potential to yield toxic honey, Ozhan told Reuters Health.
And, he and his colleagues note, with the growing consumption of
imported and unprocessed "natural" honey worldwide, the
possibility of honey intoxication should be kept in mind
whenever a healthy person has an unexplained drop in blood
pressure and heart rate.
Processed honey, according to Ozhan, would not be expected to
contain grayanotoxins. And, he noted, it's also easy for a
beekeeper to know whether a nest contains mad honey, because it
tastes different from the non-mad variety.
In Turkey, Ozhan pointed out, people knowingly buy mad honey to
use as medicine or to boost their sexual prowess.
Many of the patients in this report had ulcers, he and his
colleagues found. And, Ozhan noted, a number were grooms who had
eaten the honey in preparation for their wedding nights.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Raw canola oil can combine with a fungus to get rid
of grasshoppers, a researcher says. Stefan Jaronski, who works at the
Agricultural Research Service in Sidney, Mont., has found that the raw
canola oil has fatty acids that will attract grasshoppers to deadly
fungi known as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae.
Jaronski mixed spores of the fungi with the oil, and he found
grasshoppers were drawn to plants sprayed with the mixture. They became
infected with the fungi while feeding on the sprayed plants, and usually
died within a week, he said.
Jaronski, who has worked with insect-killing fungi since 1983, said
grasshoppers find the black and strong-smelling raw canola oil
irresistible. It is less expensive than processed canola oil, and using
it for grasshopper control could create a new market for canola, he
said.
Jaronski said he tested rangeland in Wyoming and South Dakota that had
severe grasshopper infestations. As in the lab, grasshoppers were
attracted to the canola oil and became infected with the fungal spores,
he said.
The canola oil-fungal combination also costs less because grasshoppers
are attracted to more concentrated areas within a field, meaning less of
the canola oil is needed, Jaronski said.
In Wyoming, he said, "they (insects) seem to be attracted to the strips
and leave the untreated areas alone."
The Beauveria fungus recently became available for sale in the United
States. Jaronski, who once worked in private industry, helped get the
fungus registered and commercially released. He said it is not as
effective as chemicals but, "if you want a good alternative, this is
it."
Jaronski believes the Metarhizium fungus has more promise, primarily
because it attacks only grasshoppers and Mormon crickets and does not
infect such beneficial insects as the flea beetles used to naturally
control leafy spurge.
Jaronski is working to get the fungus, which is now considered exotic,
registered in the United States.
"The Metarhizium is better adapted to hot, dry conditions," Jaronski
said. "A strain has been developed for locusts in Africa and for
grasshoppers in Australia."
Jaronski said biological controls for insects should be available to the
public in 10 years.
"We're going after the permits," Jaronski said. "So I'm optimistic that
by 2006, we'll have the permits, followed by three years of field
trials. That will tell us how effective it will be."
It shows promise for organic producers and Fish and Wildlife Service
areas where chemicals are not allowed, he said.
Jaronski acknowledged there is some fear about biological agents not
native to an environment.
Since 1983, he said, only once has he seen Beauveria briefly become
epidemic, then die back to natural levels. That was in Nebraska, where
conditions were ideal, and it persisted about a week, he said.
"The fungi are normally in equilibrium with the insects and infect just
enough to survive over the years," Jaronski said. "If they create a
really infectious, fatal disease, they can kill themselves off in the
end."
