Diarrheal Disease Vaccine Shows Promise

WASHINGTON (AP) - A new vaccine against rotavirus, the diarrheal
infection that kills millions of children worldwide, doesn't appear to
raise the risk of serious bowel blockages that caused a previous vaccine
to be pulled from the market five years ago, doctors reported Sunday.
The new vaccine, Rotarix, was recently licensed in Mexico and is
expected to go on sale there this year. Its maker, Belgium-based
GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, plans to seek similar approvals throughout
Latin America, Asia and Europe, and to launch a study in the United
States aimed at getting it approved for American infants.
Doctors tested the vaccine in more than 63,000 infants in Latin America
and Finland and reported results Sunday at an American Society for
Microbiology meeting.
Six babies who got the vaccine developed the bowel problem, as did seven
in a comparison group who got a dummy vaccine, suggesting no extra risk
beyond what would normally occur.

with the other vaccine!!! Give me a break!!! It's safer? Not to those
six parents who had to suffer through that! Just as they say in war,

Advocate Suggests Crestor May Harm Kidneys

WASHINGTON (AP) - Consumer advocate Dr. Sidney Wolfe renewed his effort
Friday to get the anti-cholesterol drug Crestor removed from sale.
Wolfe sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration citing 29 cases
of kidney problems - 18 of kidney failure and 11 of kidney insufficiency
- out of some 4.5 million prescriptions for the drug between Jan. 1,
2001 and Sept. 30, 2003.
That is more kidney problems than reported by all other statin-type
anti-cholesterol drugs, Wolfe said.
Emily Denney, a spokesperson for drugmaker AstraZeneca, responded that
the company keeps close watch of safety reports for the drug and "we
feel ever more confident with Crestor."
She said a company analysis of FDA data indicated that, compared to
other statins, Crestor was about average for kidney failure as a
percentage of side effects.
Data provided by AstraZeneca indicated that kidney failure made up 3.5
percent of adverse events for Crestor - known by the generic name
rosuvastatin - compared to 5.7 percent for lovastatin, 4.0 percent for
simvastatin and fluvastatin, 3.0 percent for pravastatin and 2.2 percent
for atorvastatin.
There was no immediate response to Wolfe's letter from the FDA.

That golden treasure full of taste and health!
It's that time of year again. The warm, comforting smell
of spicy pumpkin pies and muffins fills our homes, and our summer floral
centerpieces are replaced by playful displays of pumpkins and gourds. A
member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not really
sure about? A fruit? Gourds are supposed to be in the squash family I
thought and since pumpkin is also listed by many as a gourd I don't know
about the fruit aspect. Take this tidbit for what it's worth? I'm
simply telling you what I've found reported in some writer's and
university extensions.
Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the
Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and pronounced by the
French as "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."
Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor.
American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The
"pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter
Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention
in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a decor. Most assuredly
is much greater for eating!
Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They
also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The
origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin
top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and
honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Now that sounds really
good to me and I'm going to try it if I can find one small enough for
two. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie crust and not a filling.
The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is
loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is
one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the
conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions
in overall health.
Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing
beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer
and offers protect against heart disease. Beta-carotene offers
protection against other diseases as well.
Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup boiled and drained,
without salt - contains;
Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3
grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg,
Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg,
Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my
youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns
every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them.
Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found
recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed
pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. May do
that one day.
Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake
bites, of which I am a bit skeptical that it worked very well? No
history to know for sure?
Native American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and
watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma
tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine,
while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and
pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the
ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills,"
and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel
worms.
Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and
intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four Greater Cold
Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today pumpkin is employed to
treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints, namely benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic,
and the seeds' principal constituent, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit
the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The presence of
zinc and amino acids further treat BPH. Pumpkin is not said to reduce
prostate enlargement but to relieve symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are
also thought to help relieve dizziness.
Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are
particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children,
for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The
seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American
herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system
problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to
the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages
of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve
intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for
burns.
So these gold globes have many uses and medicinal content. Eat and enjoy
the traditional pumpkin pie.
My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins
great health inducing nutrients;
Makes two pies
1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg
2 - 9" pie crusts
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high
until smooth and creamy, about four minutes. Stop the machine every once
in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's
blades. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a
light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps of tofu.
Pour into uncooked pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not
burned).
PS: Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I
will line the outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and
bake. Gives a slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?

Parents of D.C. Students Without Shots Sent
to Court

Saturday, October 30, 2004;
District parents and guardians who failed to prove that their
children had been properly immunized this school year got more
than a summons to the principal's office: They were ordered to
appear in court.
D.C. public school officials referred the names of all parents
who they alleged had failed to obtain or document the required
shots by Oct. 15 to the District's Office of the Attorney
General. Prosecutors filed criminal charges against 41 parents
and guardians, leading to hearings yesterday in D.C. Superior
Court.
Throughout the morning and afternoon inside Judge Robert E.
Morin's courtroom, the adults stood nervously before the bench
alongside their court-appointed attorneys and entered pleas of
guilty or not guilty.

Only 6% of drug advertising material is supported by
evidence

A new study of the advertising material and marketing brochures sent out
by drug companies to GPs in Germany has shown that about 94% of the
information in them has no basis in scientific evidence.
The study, carried out by the Institute for Evidence-Based Medicine, a
private independent research institute in Cologne, evaluated 175
brochures containing information on 520 drugs, which were either sent by
post or handed out to 43 GPs since last June. The study was published in
this month's issue of the drugs bulletin Arznei Telegramm (2004;35:21-3;
www.di-em.de/data/at_2004_35_21.pdf).
About 15% of the brochures did not contain any citations, while the
citations listed in another 22% could not be found. In the remaining 63%
the information was mostly correctly connected with the relevant
research articles but did not reflect their results. Only 6% of the
brochures contained statements that were scientifically supported by
identifiable literature.
The evaluation was done by two specially trained and independently
acting reviewers. In cases of doubt a third reviewer was involved.
"This is the first study in Germany evaluating the quality of drug
advertising material," says Thomas Kaiser, a scientist at the institute
who published the study together with Peter Sawicki and other
colleagues.
He points out that the advertising material presents distorted images of
the drugs? profiles. The article lists several examples of
misrepresentation: medical guidelines from scientific societies are
misquoted or changed, the side effects of drugs are minimised, groups of
patient are wrongly defined, study results are suppressed, treatment
effects are exaggerated, risks are manipulated, and effects of drugs
were drawn from animal studies.
The authors warn that such a high amount of misinformation puts
patients? health at risk. Studies from other countries have shown that
doctors tend to base their decisions on the information and advertising
material sent out by drug companies. Therefore, the authors conclude, an
independent institution should be established to monitor the content of
such material.
The German drug industry has decided to tighten the rules in its self
regulatory code on relations between the industry and the medical
profession with regard to cooperation in clinical studies and attendance
at conferences that are funded by drug companies.
The German Association of Research Based Pharmaceutical Companies in
Berlin announced that its members have set up an independent tribunal in
Berlin. Members of the tribunal will be chosen by drug companies and
doctors' and patients' groups but will not be elected representatives of
those bodies. Like a court, the tribunal will be able to punish
companies that break the rules, imposing fines of up to
£50 000 (£34
000; $63 000) or, in the case of a second offence, up to
£250 000. Anyone will be allowed to
notify the tribunal of possible offences.
The initiative was the industry's reaction to the German government's
threat to install an executive against corruption. Doctors' associations
have also tightened their rules on corruption.

country. How wrong you are! The drug companies figures are the same in
all countries as they are all owned by the same major drug companies
that have outsourced their manufacturing throughout the world. When you

distribute them world wide, the difference is that other countries do
not allow them to sell there drugs at exorbitant prices as the U.S.
does... Other country's statistics are running the same as Germany and I
would hope that here in the U.S. that someone will work to squash the

newspapers, but I do not see that happening with the money they put into
political campaigns!
