Why Pain Persists
The problems with chronic pain are that it never
really ends and does not always respond to treatment. If the pain
initially was caused by an injury or illness, it can persist long after
the injury has healed or the illness defeated because permanent changes
have occurred in the body.
Mark Grant, a psychologist in Australia who specializes in managing
chronic pain, says the notion that "physical injury equals pain"
is overly simplistic. "We now know that pain is caused and maintained
by a combination of physical, psychological and neurological factors,"
Mr. Grant writes on his Web site, www.overcomingpain.com. With chronic
pain, a persistent physical cause often cannot be determined.
"Chronic pain can be caused by muscle tension, changes in
circulation, postural imbalances, psychological distress and
neurological changes," Mr. Grant says on his site. "It is also
known that unrelieved pain is associated with increased metabolic rate,
spontaneous excitation of the central nervous system, changes in blood
circulation to the brain and changes in the limbic-hypothalamic system,"
the region of the brain that regulates emotions.
Dr. Schneider, the author of "Living With Chronic Pain"
(Healthy Living Books, Hatherleigh Press, 2004), is a specialist in pain
management in Tucson, Ariz. In her book, she points out that the nervous
system is responsible for the two major types of chronic pain.
One, called nociceptive pain, "arises from injury to muscles, tendons
and ligaments or in the internal organs," she writes. Undamaged
nerve cells responding to an injury outside themselves transmit pain
signals to the spinal cord and then to the brain. The resulting pain is
usually described as deep and throbbing. Examples include chronic low
back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia,
headaches, interstitial cystitis and chronic pelvic pain.
The second type, neuropathic pain, "results from abnormal nerve
function or direct damage to a nerve." Among the causes are
shingles, diabetic neuropathy, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, phantom
limb pain, radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, multiple sclerosis,
Parkinson's disease, stroke and spinal cord injury.
The damaged nerve fibers ?can fire spontaneously, both at the site of
the injury and at other places along the nerve pathway? and ?can
continue indefinitely even after the source of the injury has stopped
sending pain messages,? Dr. Schneider writes.
"Neuropathic pain can be constant or intermittent, burning, aching,
shooting or stabbing, and it sometimes radiates down the arms or legs,"
she adds. This kind of pain tends "to involve exaggerated responses
to painful stimuli, spread of pain to areas that were not initially
painful, and sensations of pain in response to normally nonpainful
stimuli such as light touch." It is often worse at night and may
involve abnormal sensations like tingling, pins and needles, and intense
itching.
Some chronic pain syndromes involve both nociceptive and neuropathic
pain. A common example is sciatica; a pinched nerve causes back pain
that radiates down the leg. In some cases, the pain of sciatica is not
felt in the back but only in the leg, making the cause difficult to
diagnose without an M.R.I.
Beyond Physical Problems
The consequences of chronic pain typically extend well beyond the
discomfort from the sensation of pain itself. Dr. Schneider lists these
potential physical effects: poor wound healing, weakness and muscle
breakdown, decreased movement that can lead to blood clots, shallow
breathing and suppressed coughing that raise the risk of pneumonia,
sodium and water retention in the kidneys, raised heart rate and blood
pressure, weakened immune system, a slowing of gastrointestinal
motility, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite and weight, and fatigue.
But that is hardly the end of it. The psychological and social
consequences of chronic pain can be enormous. Unremitting pain can rob a
person of the ability to enjoy life, maintain important relationships,
fulfill spousal and parental responsibilities, perform well at a job or
work at all.
The economic burdens can be severe, especially when the patient is the
primary breadwinner or holds a job that provides the family's health
insurance. Only about half of patients with chronic pain "who undergo
comprehensive multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation are able to return
to work," Dr. Schneider reports.
As for the notion that chronic pain patients are often malingering -
seeking attention and escape from responsibilities - pain specialists
say that is nonsense. No one in his right mind - and most patients were
in their right minds before the pain began - would trade a fulfilling
life for the misery of chronic pain.

The Sweet n' Sour
Of Health!
This great golden yellow to orange fruit is very shortly
coming into season in Southern California and a time I always looked
forward to when I lived there. There is nothing so tasty as fresh fruits
or vegetables right off the tree, bush or vine!!!
A large citrus fruit related to the orange, lemon and pomelo.
Grapefruits are categorized as white, pink or ruby. However, this
terminology doesn't reflect their skin color, which is either yellow or
pinkish-yellow, but simply describes the color inside. Grapefruits
usually range in diameter from four to six inches, with some varieties
featuring seeds while others are seedless. The wonderful flavor of a
grapefruit is like paradise, just as its Latin name Citrus paradisi
connotes. It is juicy, tart and tangy with an underlying sweetness
that weaves throughout.
History of grapefruit
Grapefruits have a rather recent history, having been discovered in
Barbados in the 18th century. Many botanists think the grapefruit was
actually the result of a natural cross breeding which occurred between
the orange and the pomelo, a citrus fruit that was brought from
Indonesia to Barbados in the 17th century.

The resulting fruit was given the name grapefruit in 1814 in
Jamaica, a name which reflects the way it's arranged when it grows -
hanging in clusters just like grapes.
Grapefruit trees were planted in Florida in the early 19th century,
although they did not become a viable commercial crop until later that
century. Florida is still a major producer of grapefruits, as is
California, Arizona and Texas. Other countries that produce grapefruits
commercially include Israel, South Africa and Brazil.
The National Cancer Institute placed grapefruit on their list of cancer
preventative foods. Low in calories and actually known to trigger weight
loss.
An excellent source of vitamin C, that helps to support the immune
system. Vitamin C-rich foods like grapefruit are known to help reduce
cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms; Numerous scientific studies
have found vitamin C to be a cold-fighter. Also shown to prevent free
radical damage that triggers the inflammatory processes, and reduces
severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and
rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin C is beneficial to promoting
cardiovascular health. Owing to the multitude of vitamin C's health
benefits, it is not surprising that research has shown that consumption
of vegetables and fruits high in this nutrient is associated with a
reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke
and cancer.
Also an excellent source of Vitamin A the healthy skin nutrient!
Grapefruit may be the less favored citrus choice when compared to the
sweeter orange, but grapefruit sparkles with health promoting compounds
that are known to help:
* fight cold symptoms
* prevent certain forms of cancer
* prevent heart disease
New research presented at the 228th National Meeting of the American
Chemical Society provides two more reasons to drink grapefruit juice:
protection against lung and colon cancer.
CAUTION: Do not drink grapefruit juice if taking
blood-pressure-lowering drug Plendil (felodipine) increases its
absorption making for dizziness and/or fainting!
Nutrients in grapefruit are; Vitamin A & C, Lycopene, Limonoids and
Pectin,
In humans, drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day was
shown to reduce the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing
chemicals found in tobacco smoke. In rats whose colons were injected
with carcinogens, grapefruit and its isolated active compounds (apigenin,
hesperidin, limonin, naringin, naringenin, nobiletin) not only increased
the death of cancer cells, but also increases the production of normal
colon cells. Researchers also confirmed that grapefruit may help prevent
weight gain by lowering insulin levels.
Lycopene; the rich pink and red colors of grapefruit are due to
lycopene, a carotenoid phytochemical. Lycopene appears to have
anti-tumor activity. Among the common dietary carotenoids, lycopene has
the highest capacity to help fight oxygen free radicals, which are
compounds that can damage cells.
Limonoids; phytochemicals in grapefruit called limonoids inhibit
tumor formation by promoting the formation of glutathione-S-transferase,
a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme sparks a reaction in the liver that
helps to make toxic compounds more water soluble for excretion from the
body. Pulp of citrus fruits like grapefruit contain glucarates,
compounds which may help prevent breast cancer.
Pectin; a form of soluble fiber that forms a gel-like substance
in the intestinal tract that can trap fats like cholesterol. In animal
studies, grapefruit pectin inhibited the formation of atherosclerosis.
Animals fed a high-cholesterol diet plus grapefruit pectin had 24%
narrowing of their arteries, while animals fed only the high-cholesterol
diet had 45% narrowing.
Prevent Kidney Stones; reduce your risk of calcium oxalate kidney
stones. Drink grapefruit juice. A study published in the British Journal
of Nutrition found that when women drank ? to 1 litre of grapefruit,
apple or orange juice daily, their urinary pH value and citric acid
excretion increased, significantly dropping their risk of forming
calcium oxalate stones.(October 4, 2003)
Protection against Macular Degeneration; Data reported in a study
published in the June 2004 issue of the Archives of Opthamology
indicates that eating 3 or more servings of fruit per day may lower your
risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the primary cause of
vision loss in older adults, by 36%, compared to persons who consume
less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.
In this study, which involved 77,562 women and 40,866 men, researchers
evaluated the effect of study participants' consumption of fruits;
vegetables; the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E; and carotenoids on the
development of early AMD or neovascular AMD, a more severe form of the
illness associated with vision loss. Food intake information was
collected periodically for up to 18 years for women and 12 years for
men. Fruit intake was definitely protective against the severe form of
this AMD vision-destroying disease. Three servings of fruit may sound
like a lot to eat each day, but grapefruit can help you reach this goal.
Try starting your day with a half grapefruit, add grapefruit sections to
your green salads, or for an elegant dessert, spread a little honey over
a half grapefruit and broil for 1-2 minutes.(July 10, 2004)
How to Select and Store Grapefruit!
A good grapefruit doesn?t have to be perfect in color. Skin
discoloration, scratches or scales may affect the appearance of a
grapefruit, but they do not impact the taste quality. Signs of decay
include an overly soft spot at the stem end of the fruit and areas that
appear watersoaked. These form of decay usually does translate into poor
taste; a flavor that is less vibrant and more bitter than a good quality
grapefruit.
The grapefruit should be heavy for its size as this usually indicates
thin skins and therefore a higher concentration of juicier flesh. Those
that have overly rough or wrinkled skin usually tend to be thick skinned
with less meat inside, a dryer taste and not as flavorful.
Grapefruits should be firm, yet slightly springy when gentle pressure is
applied. While chilled grapefruits do not have an apparent fragrance,
those kept at room temperature should have a subtly sweet aroma.
Grapefruits can be purchased throughout the year although the height of
the season ranges from winter through early spring.
Since grapefruits are more juicy when they're slightly warm rather than
cool, store them at room temperature if you are planning on consuming
them within a week of purchase. If you will not be using them within
this time period, store them in the refrigerator crisper where they will
keep fresh for two to three weeks.
The next time you eat a sweet, juicy grapefruit know that you will also
be consuming a variety of nutrients you may not have realized. These
nutrients are called phytochemicals. They are found naturally in
grapefruit and many have been linked to the prevention of certain
cancers. One of these phytochemicals is called lycopene. Some animal
studies have shown lycopene to reduce the risk of prostate, breast,
cervical and colon cancer. Studies by Dr. Steve Clinton at the Harvard
School of Public Health have shown that when lycopene is found in high
concentrations in the human prostate it significantly reduces the risk
of prostate cancer.
I have no recipe here as we eat fresh grapefruit peeled in citrus fruit
salad or as a breakfast fruit or snack. You can find canned grapefruit
sections that are quite tasty. Use your imagination and enjoy grapefruit
for your health!

New research has shown that dozens of toxic industrial chemicals
are accumulating in our bodies, and they say there's nothing we
can do about it.
The study took blood from a cross-section of the population and
found that each of the 155 volunteers tested, from all areas of
life, country and cities, was contaminated with chemicals - most
of which they didn't even know existed. The pesticide DDT and
types of non-degradable chemicals called polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs, used in electrical insulation) were found in
all but one of the volunteers. One person registered 49
different toxins.?
Researchers say, "How and where the general public collects
these persistent pollutants is a mystery. It seems we are all
involved in a game of Russian roulette where we may be
unwittingly exposed at any time or any place. But food, water,
house dust and our household appliances are all potential
sources of contamination."
The mystery is that these researchers can't figure out the
simply logistics of industry polluting our water, air and foods!
They choose to not know!
"People shouldn't be too alarmed," says Dr Gareth Thomas.
Oh no, well look who he works for, chemical industry! Do you
think he can be objective when his livelihood is dependent on
the chemical industry? I think not! Check up on Dr. Thomas and

The study's findings are deplorable facts and ones that should
awaken the world but the laxity of people's ability to react is
so dulled they don't know how or what to do. Waking up is not
happening because scientists are saying "Not to worry its not
bad since most of those chemicals are no longer in use."
Now why wouldn't we worry? If those chemicals from years past
that are no longer in use yet are still in our systems it only
points out how toxic they were and how they accumulated in our
systems. If that is the case why are infants and children
testing positive for them now?
There are already figures showing the build up of toxins in our
systems from the chemicals currently in use. Our body's are a
toxic dump in the making by man's love of money and disregard
for mankind!
We are walking time bombs! This is a wakeup call to every part
of the world, but nobody is listening. Our own government has
reneged at helping make us better by giving industry the okay to
not streamline their factories to stop polluting our air as they
had been ordered to do in the past. They've also given the
pharmaceutical industry free reign to do as they please and make
as much money as they can!
The mystery is in how mankind can be so uncaring about their
environment and continue to ruin it!
Keeping healthy will require you filter your water for you and
your pets in bathing, cooking and drinking. Use all chemical
free household cleaning products, skin care shampoo,
conditioner, cosmetics, etc. Use air filtration in your home and
car. Eat organic foods!
When the majority start to demand healthy products industry will
listen!!! Loss of sales talks and only then will they pay
attention!!! This is coming about slowly yet so many will become
ill without recognizing the toxic mess in their body!

Chemicals Contribute To Weight Gain

During the past 20 years there has been a significant increase
in weight gain and obesity in the United States. In most
developed countries, current estimates suggest that women, in
particular, are gaining weight on an average of 450g per year
despite the plethora of low fat, no fat products and multitude
diets and weight loss gadgets. Could it be that our modern day,
chemical-laden lives are making us fat?
Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton suggests the root cause of all weight
gain is directly related to our own natural weight control
system being overloaded and poisoned with toxic chemicals that
we encounter through our skin care, food, cleaning products and
general environment. In her book, The Detox Diet - Eliminate
Chemical Calories and Enhance Your Natural Slimming System, Dr
Baillie-Hamilton explores the link between the current fat
epidemic and toxic synthetic chemicals.
Toxic synthetic chemicals are highly fat soluble therefore when
the body is exposed to these substances it then gets busy
creating fat tissue as a storehouse for those toxins that cannot
be processed and eliminated from the body.
A group of insecticides and herbicides used in the growing of
food, cosmetic, and medicinal ingredients, known as Carbamates,
are also used as growth promoters in battery-farm situations
because they slow down the metabolic rate. So, the same
synthetic chemicals used on our fruit and vegetables are used to
fatten livestock! Carbamates are also used in medicine to
promote weight gain in humans.
As the population gets fatter and fatter, not through their own
lack of effort, they exercise and diet in vain so long as they
continue to consume chemical calories. Toxic chemicals, even in
small amounts, have the ability to directly disrupt hormones.
Catecholamines, the body's slimming hormones, also come under
chemical attack by way of toxic chemicals interfering with the
metabolic process which then inhibits the body's own natural
slimming systems. Dr Baillie-Hamilton, in summary, suggests that
all products that contain toxic chemicals; food, skin care,
cosmetics and household, be replaced with organic products. Be

claims to be organic doesn't necessarily mean it is organic. In
chemistry, the term 'organic' simply means it contains a carbon
