Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Greetings and thank you for being a faithful subscriber!

As the rain passes by and the sunshine comes out I find such beauty in the earth and it's moist smells... We have had so many years of drought that every little drop of water is savored. We are still way behind what we should have and our water supplies are only 40% of what they need to be this time of year so we need you great prayers and thoughts that this winter will be full of snow and rain even if it does inconvenience some, it's necessary...

Today's ezine has an update on the arthritis medication debacle that continues. My take is don't take any of them unless you are willing to live with heart or liver disease, or die with heart disease or liver disease. There is also some more on the cholesterol bantering.

Something To Think About

A CAUSE FOR CELEBREXION?
By Red Flags Columnist, Dr. Malcolm Kendrick
(email - malcolm@llp.org.uk)

And so the Cox II, Celebrex, story rumbles on. I have cut a chunk from an on-line journal for the pharmaceutical industry known as FirstWord. You can register here. It?s an interesting read, and provides very up to date news about goings on across the pharmaceutical industry world. I never miss it.

Anyway, read on:

Pfizer defended the safety of Celebrex Thursday after the publication of a report in Canada's National Post newspaper suggested the COX-2 drug was linked to at least 14 deaths, as well as heart and brain side effects, CNN Money and other news sources report. The newspaper cited adverse-events documents on Celebrex from the Canadian health department.

Nonetheless, while the documents allegedly show over 100 adverse-reaction reports on Celebrex over the past five years, which include 19 cases of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart failure plus five strokes, a spokeswoman for Canada's health department said that a "causal link" has not been established between the COX-2 inhibitor and the adverse events, as reported in Morningstar and TheStreet.

Pfizer issued a statement on the article saying, "The news report, based on voluntary spontaneous event reporting to Canadian health authorities, is misleading. The story is not supported by any clinical or epidemiological studies and has the potential to cause undue confusion among patients and physicians," as reported in Yahoo Finance.

Of course what is not mentioned, but is most interesting, about reported deaths and adverse reports, is that no-one reports an adverse drug event unless they thought it was the drug that caused the death.

Most people who die are, by their nature, pretty unwell. They are also, usually, on a whole whack of different drugs. Did the drugs kills them? Did a specific drug kill them? How could you possibly know?

Many people on Cox II drugs, Vioxx, Celebrex etc. are elderly. Many of them will have varying degrees of heart disease. If they die of a heart attack, who is going to point the finger at Celebrex and write an adverse event report? Not I. Especially not I, if this adverse event is not even listed as a known effect of the drug.

A review of Vioxx, in an internal Merck memo suggested that Vioxx may have caused 27,000 deaths. (From FirstWord again)

The FDA published details of a memo by Dr. David J. Graham that suggested Merck's Vioxx (rofecoxib) might have contributed to over 27,000 heart attacks and deaths, based on data from 1999 through 2003, reports the Financial Times and other news sources. The memo was dated September 30, the same day Merck announced it was withdrawing the drug.

In short, no-one noticed 27,000 Vioxx related deaths. The adverse event reporting system reported precisely nothing. How many deaths, one wonders, does a drug have to cause before the alarm bells ring. Fifty thousand, a million, a Google?

So, just because there have been only fourteen deaths associated with Celebrex in Canada ? as recorded by a system very similar to the one that miserably failed to notice 27,000 deaths in the USA ? does not actually mean anything at all. Watch this space - my bet is that Celebrex will be gone before the end of the year. You read it here first. http://www.redflagsdaily.com

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

Add a twist!

Scientists at the University of Arizona studied the drinking habits of 450 people, half of whom had SCC. They found that those who regularly drank hot tea had a 40 percent reduction in the incidence of this common type of skin cancer. But those who added a twist of citrus peel to their hot tea had a remarkable 70 percent reduction. They also had an equivalent reduction in severe sunburn, a predisposing cause of squamous cell and other skin cancers {Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2001 Jun;10(6):667-78}.

The Tucson scientists found no particular benefit (in this regard) to citrus juice or citrus fruit... just the peel. Citrus peels are the major source of a chemical called d-limonene, which seems to have a protective effect against skin cancer.

But why hot (and not iced) tea? The reason seems to be that iced tea becomes too diluted to be of much benefit.{Nutr Cancer 2000;37(2):161-8}.

Cholesterol Guidelines Fraught With Massive Conflict of Interest

The government received new cholesterol guidelines from an influential medical group of doctors. However, it was discovered that eight of these nine doctors have been making money from the companies of the cholesterol-lowering drugs they have been pushing upon millions of Americans. Ironically enough it was revealed that:

*Two of the doctors own stock in drug companies
*Two went to work for drug companies after working on the guidelines
*One was a senior government scientist who moonlights for 10 drug companies (and serves on one of their boards)

Drug companies are trying to get the government's approval on allowing some controversial statin drugs, such as Lipitor and Zocor, to be sold over the counter. With doctors urging approvals such as these, many feel as though the credibility of doctors is being compromised. These findings also raise many questions as to whether their advice is based in the best interest of the public.

High cholesterol can be found in more than half of Americans. Statin drugs claim to drop cholesterol dramatically and almost overnight, so it is no surprise people are continuing to listen to their doctor's advice.

A conflict of interest also results from the fact that two-thirds of the medical research at universities is funded by private industries. Further, all trials of statin drugs have been funded by companies, not the government. With the drug industry having spent $2 billion in 2001 on doctor events, critics ask if all the money floating around medicine has created a pattern of corruption.

However, financial conflict is not the only concern.

Another concern addressed the process of "group think," which consists of strictly the thoughts and opinions of cardiologists. This poses a problem, as it leads to extremely one-sided decisions.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

That Green Leaf Of Health!

When making my lunch of wilted greens. I dropped my leaves into the skillet of hot Olive Oil, Rice Vinegar, chopped celery and sweet chopped onion my mind went back to Popeye and Olive Oil, the cartoon characters that were so popular in my children's childhood. And remembered the muscles Popeye sported and wondered if that could possibly be true? Would these great green leaves build muscles.  Hence this weeks great green food, Spinach!

A few years ago my then six year-old granddaughter said, "No way am I eating spinach, it tastes nasty!"  We coaxed her into trying it, knowing that fresh spinach, cooked or not, doesn't resemble the taste of canned, that she had tried before. Her remarks after eating a whole serving was "Look everybody, take a picture, I'm eating spinach and it's good!" The grandchildren eat a lot of spinach and like it fixed in various ways, when around our house.

Spinach originally came from Persia  - now known as Iran - where its name was called "aspanakh". By the 1300s, it had spread to Europe and Britain where it was particularly popular during Lent. It was being cultivated in North America by the early part of the 19th century. Was used in medieval times by artists to produce a green pigment for illuminated manuscripts. It is one of the few non toxic natural green pigments, and is still used today as body paint.

Spinach is a cool season crop and belongs to the goosefoot family along with Swiss chard and beets. Spinach is low in calories, and is a good source of vitamins and minerals, especially iron. Spinach was, supposedly, the first frozen vegetable to be sold.

But does it build muscles as Popeye spouted?

Scientists say those green leaves help reduce your risk of age-related macular degeneration, cancer, heart disease and neural tube defects. Also said to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and cataracts. And the healthy dose of potassium and calcium found in spinach can help regulate your blood pressure. The benefits of spinach don?t stop there! Spinach and other leafy greens also provide folic acid, which is known to reduce the risk of neural tube defect and heart disease. Some studies have gone so far as to say it even improves memory. Calorie for calorie, leafy green vegetables like spinach with its delicate texture and jade green color provide more nutrients than any other food. Although spinach is available in grocery stores here throughout the year their season runs from March through May and from September through October when it is the freshest, has the best flavor and is most readily available.

I suppose Popeye was right because of all the great energy and muscle building minerals and vitamins spinach contains. That being the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Along with the vitamins  C, E, B-12, A, B-6, Folate, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folic acid, Pantothenic acid and Retinol.

If you do not grow your own, it can be found fresh in most grocery stores, in the U.S., year round either bunched or as leaves.  Shop for vivid, dark green spinach with firm leaves and stems. Avoid those with excessively thick, tough or woody stem ends. Smooth-leaf spinach is most often sold in bunches. Medium and Savoy varieties are more likely to be found loose or washed and partly stemmed in packages. I usually have a few jars of organic spinach in my canning cabinet of fruits and vegetables, grown by my husband each year, except this year. He failed to plant enough for me and the bugs and worms that love it as well?

Cleaning tip: It is imperative that fresh spinach be washed many, many, many times to removed dirt and little crawly creatures that love to invade those organic leaves.

It's relatively perishable and should be wrapped and stored in the refrigerator. It's best eaten as soon as possible after purchase or picking.

My Simple Wilted Salad that started the thought on spinach:

Enough for one person!

6 cups fresh, clean spinach leaves
3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Seasoned Rice Vinegar
? cup chopped fresh sweet onions
1 Rib of celery chopped and/or 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper

Heat Olive oil and vinegar in a deep skillet, large enough to hold the initial six cups of spinach, placed over a medium hot burner. Add onions and celery, sauté for about two or three minutes ( I like the onions and celery to still have a crunch to them). Add spinach and toss constantly until all leaves are coated with olive oil and vinegar and wilted. Remove from burner and serve warm as a salad or side dish!

My mother always made her wilted salad with fresh mixed loose leaf lettuce and spinach greens with regular vinegar and sugar, which was a different flavor?

Eat your spinach and be healthy!
Lena

Chocolate, A Medicine?
© By Lena Sanchez

What I call the "chocolate season" is here! The gift that appears on desks all over and is chosen as the "simple yet yummy gift" flies off the store shelves this time of the year. Is that a good gift or a bad gift? Depends on what kind of chocolate!

When people think of chocolate, they usually think of the sweet shop and high calorie chocolate bars. It may come as a surprise that chocolate was originally used as a medicine and is still being used as a medicine today in some areas of the world.

It is good for us? It's only been in the 19th century that chocolate's status changed from medicine to magnificent confection. The Latin name for chocolate "Theombroma cacao" translates to "food of the Gods". The cacoa bean itself - that chocolate comes from - has some great properties to lift the mood, fight fatigue, bolster libido, and ... even aid in weight loss. A recipe for you own chocolate weight loss healing tonic below.

Native to Central and Latin America, the fruits of the chocolate tree have been used by indigenous people to treat depression, fatigue, weight gain, and poor sex drive for thousands of years. Indeed, when the Europeans first arrived in the Americas looking a little worse for the wear, they were presented with a tonic beverage made out of cocoa beans.

Is using chocolate as a medicine a strange idea? Maybe not. When do people eat chocolate? When they are depressed, frustrated, angry, and irritated. Does it work? If it did not, people in the world would not consume millions of pounds of chocolate each year! Chocolate works. But what does the scientific community have to say about chocolate. Is there anything to it? Let's look at its different potential uses, one at a time.

Sex

Chocolate has long been used as an aphrodisiac in Latin America. What does a suitor bring a date? A box of chocolates. What does a husband bring a wife when he has been behaving badly? A box of chocolates. Chocolate and love go hand in hand.

Is there anything to this? To begin with, chocolate contains valeric acid, a sedative and tranquilizer. Indeed, it is termed an "anti-hysteric". It also contains the neurotransmitter dopamine, which acts as a relaxant. Chocolate relaxes and love tends to flourish in a relaxed setting.

Moreover, chocolate contains phytosterols that may, in some way, mimic human sex hormones. Research into the hormone side of chocolate is in its infancy, but women will tell you they crave chocolate at certain times of the month.  This may be because it provides them with something they need. Some researchers feel chocolate's activity may go beyond hormonal and approach the pheromonal level. Pheromones are the compounds our bodies produce which make us attractive to other members of the species.

Exhaustion

People that are tired all of the time often reach for a chocolate bar, seemingly with good reason. Chocolate has been shown to act as a gentle stimulant. Firstly, it contains the stimulant theobromine, a substance related to caffeine. Research has shown that like caffeine, theobromine stimulates nerve function but it does not have the negative side effects associated with caffeine. Could theobromine make a person jittery? Probably not. Chocolate also contains the relaxant valeric acid and the anti-anxiety compound glutamic acid which counter balances the stimulant effect of theobromine!

Weight Gain

Research has shown that when you eat your brain releases happy chemicals and you feel happier. For this reason some people over eat when they are feeling down. The problem being, if you are depressed and you put on weight you get even more depressed.

Can chocolate help those people who eat to make themselves feel better? Maybe. First of all, it contains a list of anti-depressant compounds that address the fundamental problem with comfort eaters. Beyond this, theobromine, the stimulant found in chocolate, has been determined to act as an "anorexic". Anorexics are substances that make you less hungry! Chocolate acts as an appetite suppressant and antidepressant all in one. It also contains compounds that speed the metabolism, which means you burn more fat while using it.

Depression

A lot of people eat chocolate when they are feeling a little blue and it would seem that this is not a bad idea. Chocolate beans contain amino acids, many of which have been shown to have an antidepressant activity. The list of anti-depressant amino acids includes tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine. Fascinatingly, tryptophan has been shown to increase the body's production of serotonin. Serotonin is our bodies self produced antidepressant.

"Along with chocolate's many wonderful attributes comes its calories and fat, but you can get the benefits of chocolate without hurting your heart or waistline."

I found this fantastic beverage that Planet Botanic (www.planetbotanic.com) uses made from cacao beans to treat mild depression, exhaustion, and poor sex drive. Also used in weight loss plans to help wean people off chocolate-bar addiction.

1.  Take 24 raw cacao beans (available in Latin American grocery stores- notice the spelling) and place them in a pan on the stove. Heat them on low, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes, then take out of the pan to cool.

2. Once cool, grind the beans into a fine powder in an electric coffee grinder or Vita Mixer.

3. Add the powder to 3 1/2 cups boiling water and boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

4. While cooling, sweeten to taste. Any sweetener you enjoy will be fine. (I Do not recommend Splenda, Sweet ´n Low or any aspartame sweetener.)

The result - 3 cups genuine cacao. You can drink it hot or cold. Store in the refrigerator no more than one week.

Note: If you cannot find the beans, buy organic cacao powder from your health food store. Three teaspoonfuls in 3 cups water make the equivalent of the above recipe made from beans.

How to use the Chocolate Tonic:

*For energy: Drink 1 cup 3 x day
*To curb appetite: Drink 1 cup 3 x day
*To rev up romance: Drink 1 1/2 cup 1/2 hour before romancing
*To wean off chocolate bars:
Have 1 cup when the urge hits (Max 3 cups a day)

Warnings: Even though cacao beans are considered to be
safe, they're not recommended for pregnant or nursing women,
anyone with kidney stones, those with acid reflux problems,
or migraine sufferers.

UK to push Bush on global warming
November 8, 2004

BERLIN - The government hopes it can exert influence on reelected President George W. Bush and push the United States to do more to combat climate change, the government's chief scientist says.

Prime Minister Tony Blair has made tackling global warming and reducing carbon emissions one of two priorities for Britain's year-long presidency of the Group of Eight (G8) richest nations starting in January.

The United States refused to sign up to the Kyoto treaty on climate change in 2001 and it was held in limbo until Russia's parliament ratified the treaty last month.

Speaking on the sidelines of a British-German conference on climate change in Berlin, the government's chief scientific adviser David King, said London was looking to take advantage of its close relationship with Washington as the Bush administration prepared for its second four-year term. "What I can say is that we are looking for advantages in the present situation," King told Reuters.

"We'll be in there very quickly discussing these issues with them prior to our G8 presidency," he added. "I think we can feel quite optimistic about that."

The Kyoto treaty aims to cut CO2 emissions by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. The United States has four percent of the world's population but produces a quarter of global emissions.

King said he was encouraged by comments over the summer by Jack Marburger, Bush's chief scientific adviser, and by Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham.

"It's very, very significant the statements that emerged from the U.S. administration over the summer ... stating that they fully accept the scientific arguments for climate change and are keen to play a leadership role," King said. "So far we've been focusing on Russia. Clearly now the spotlight is going to move."

REUTERS NEWS SERVICE

LENA'S NOTE: A test of our friendship? I'm not going to hold my breath for the next four years. The "Good Old Boy Network" within the U.S doesn't want to spend the money to make this happen and our leaders are not going to make them do it as shown when the law to make it happen was reversed the week after this administration hit the white house in 2001... The statement that our president made when backing out of the Kyoto in 2001 was; "it would lose jobs and I'm not going to be responsible for lost jobs." People getting ill loses far more jobs puts thousands on disability every year and costs us billions of dollars in health care for those going on disability and government rolls. The number far exceeds lost jobs that MIGHT be lost from improving the atmosphere, even though they could not prove that would happen, but it sounded good! It's money in the big CEO's pockets not jobs that's the problem... We produce one-quarter of all pollution yet we shouldn't make the effort? I'm sorry, but this is wrong to pollute the rest of the world and then say we aren't going to do anything about it so someone can put billions of dollars in his pocket!
