Greetings and thank you for

Happy Birthday U.S. Marine Corp!!! My husband, a former marine, may
forget his own birthday but he never forgets the USMC birthday... What
is it about the USMC that so entrenches in men that 45 years the memory
is so current? Both our sons were born on a Marine base yet I am not big
at celebrating the Corp birthday as my husband is... Only a former
Marine can answer that I guess!
Okay,
Friday seems to be the day people
here in the U.S. start making plans for a
leisurely weekend that actually may be more stressful than the work-day
week, all in the name of enjoyment. Be careful when planning your
weekend!!! It truly is necessary to have a day of rest so don't blow it
by overplanning to the point that Monday will be spent recuperating from
it. Your health depends on it! I spend a day with the Lord and another
in a good book giving my body the rest it needs. Can you day the same?

Exposure to
Chemicals May Harm Young Brains
by Patricia Reaney
November 9, 2006
LONDON - Exposure to industrial chemicals in the womb or early in life
can impair brain development but only a handful are controlled to
protect children, researchers said on Wednesday.
There is also a lack of research and testing to identify which chemicals
cause the most harm or how they should be regulated, they added.
"Only a few substances, such as lead and mercury, are controlled with
the purpose of protecting children," said Philippe Grandjean of Harvard
School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts and the University of
Southern Denmark.
"The 200 other chemicals that are known to be toxic to the human brain
are not regulated to prevent adverse effects on the foetus or a small
child," he added.
In a review published online by The Lancet medical journal, Grandjean
and Philip Landrigan of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York
identified 202 industrial chemicals known to be toxic to the human
brain.
They suggested millions of children worldwide may have been harmed by
toxic chemicals and may suffer learning disabilities and developmental
disorders. But only substances such as lead, methylmercury and
polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs) have been sufficiently studied and
regulated.
"Chemicals that can interfere with brain function -- that are toxic to
the brain -- should be considered toxic also to the developing brain,"
Grandjean told Reuters.
"We should protect developing brains from exposure to these substances.
We also need to examine industrial chemicals for these kinds of effects
because it is not being done systematically," he added.
The researchers warned the developing brain is more susceptible to the
effects of toxic chemicals than an adult brain and any interference
could have permanent consequences.
They called for a precautionary approach and said strict regulations
should be enforced for any substance which is shown to have a toxic
effect.
Professor Mark Hanson, of Southampton University in England, described
the review as a timely report which will stir up debate and generate
more research.
"There is no need to panic, but we can't ignore this possible problem,"
he said in a statement. "And of course it's no accident that the
populations in which development and education are challenged in other
ways ... in poor parts of the developing world, are also the areas in
which such pollutants are abundant."

Researchers in Japan surveyed more than 1,000 people in Shizuoka, where
mandarin orange consumption is high, and found chemical markers in the
blood of residents that were linked to a lower risk of liver disease,
hardened arteries, and insulin resistance.
In a separate study, scientists at the Kyoto Prefuctural University of
Medicine studied 75 people with viral hepatitis. Thirty of the patients
who drank mandarin orange juice for a year had no liver cancer, while
the 45 who did not drink the juice had an 8.9 percent incidence of the
disease.

11M Bottles of
Acetaminophen Recalled
Nov 9, 2006
WASHINGTON (AP) - A major manufacturer of store-brand acetaminophen
recalled 11 million bottles of the pain-relieving pills Thursday
after discovering some were contaminated with metal fragments.
Perrigo Co. (PRGO) said it discovered the metal bits during
quality-control checks. There were no immediate reports of injuries
or illness. The recall affects bottles containing various amounts of
500-milligram caplets.
Perrigo bills itself as the world's largest manufacturer of
store-brand nonprescription drugs. The Allegan, Mich., company did
not disclose the chains for which it manufactures the store-brand
acetaminophen.
However, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), CVS Corp. (CVS), Walgreen Co.
(WAG) and Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) are among the companies it
supplies with health care products, according to company Securities
and Exchange Commission filings.
Perrigo said the pills contained raw material purchased from a
third-party supplier and affected 383 batches.
Acetaminophen is best known as the drug in products sold under the
Tylenol brand, but is widely available in generic versions. The
recall does not affect Tylenol. The recall should not cause a
shortage of acetaminophen, the Food and Drug Administration said.
The voluntary recall is considered a Class II recall since it covers
products that might cause a temporary health problem or pose only a
slight threat of a serious nature, according to the FDA.
Consumers with questions can call Perrigo toll free at (877)

Scientists Hope Bodies Can Fight
Cancer
Nov 9, 2006
By MARIA CHENG
LONDON (AP) - Scientists are investigating new strategies to harness
the human body's own immune system to fight skin cancer.
In a departure from the standard chemotherapy treatments, which
flood patients with toxic chemicals to kill cancer cells, doctors
are trying to provoke the body's natural defenses to do the same
thing. Two such techniques to combat melanoma were reported in
papers presented this week in Prague at a European cancer research
meeting.
The strategies are the first attempts to suppress the body's
T-regulatory cells, which normally keep the immune system in check.
In cancer, oncologists theorize that it may be helpful for the
immune system to remain active, thereby unleashing it on the cancer.
"This is a fundamentally different approach to treating cancer,"
said Dr. Alexander Eggermont, professor of surgical oncology at the
University of Rotterdam, Netherlands, the conference's chairman.
Eggermont was not connected to either of the skin cancer research
papers.
While the research is still preliminary, the scientists' novel
approach to attacking cancer has already produced some promising
results.
In a paper presented by Dr. Jason Chesney of the JG Brown Cancer
Center in Kentucky seven patients with advanced skin cancer were
given a drug combination of diphtheria toxin and interleukin 2,
intended to knock out the body's T-regulatory cells. In five of the
seven patients, tumors shrank or remained stable.
By wiping out the T-regulator cells, the drug prevented the immune
system from shutting down, thus priming the body to mount a
continuous attack against cancer, Chesney explained.
"This is a landmark study," said Dr. Anna Pavlick, director of the
melanoma program at New York University, who was not involved in the
study. "What it shows is that by suppressing T-regulatory cells, we
can take the brakes off a patient's immune system."
Though Pavlick says it's too early to change how patients are
treated based on Chesney's study alone, she believes the methodology
merits further research.
"It's like having permanent chemotherapy," said Chesney. "You're
inducing your own immune system to stick around and keep this cancer
from growing."
Advanced melanoma is a devastating disease for which there is no
effective treatment. The average life expectancy is about nine
months, and less than 20 percent of patients survive more than two
years after diagnosis.
In another study presented Wednesday, Dr. Jeffrey Weber, a professor
of medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles,
described how he and colleagues were able to block a protein on
T-regulatory cells, thus inhibiting them enough for the immune
system to attack cancerous cells. Patients were given shots of an
antibody aimed at the T-regulatory cells. Out of 25 patients tested,
24 are alive after 17 months, and three are free of cancer.
If this strategy of manipulating the immune system proves
successful, the whole framework of cancer treatment might be
changed. Until recently, chemotherapy was thought to be the best way
to eliminate tumors. Yet while chemotherapy certainly reduces the
size of tumors, it cannot prevent their recurrence, and is only a
short-term solution.
"If we can change the rules of the game by keeping the immune system
active, we might be able to prevent tumor regrowth," said Eggermont.
Allowing the immune system to run wild does not come without risk;
doctors admit it could lead to autoimmune diseases including
hepatitis, colitis or dermatitis. Still, most say those conditions
are manageable, and are outweighed by the prospect of beating skin
cancer.
Earlier this year, scientists at the U.S. National Cancer Institute
used a similar technique, turning regular red blood cells into
cancer-killing agents. That involved genetically engineering red
blood cells in a laboratory and artificially producing billions more
of them before re-injecting them into patients.
But the strategies employed by Chesney and Weber are far more
straightforward, as they don't involve genetic manipulation in a
laboratory.
Both Chesney and Weber say it will be years before their strategies
are sufficiently tested to know if they work on a wide scale. But if
their hypotheses prove correct, they could also be applied to other
types of cancer in which T-regulatory cells are known to play a
role, such as breast, kidney, or esophageal cancer.
"This is how successful therapies get started," said Dr. Rick Bucala,
a professor at Yale University's School of Medicine. While Bucala
says that it would be "highly significant" if the immune system
could be effectively used against cancer, he cautioned there was
still too little data. "Nothing in science is meaningful until it's
been replicated."
LENA'S COMMENT: It's about time! Sadly they can only say
HOPE... Natural medicine has known that ALL cancer can be fought by
the body's immune system when brought to it's best fighting action.
Traditional medicine may come into the light in twenty or so years
if the scientist are honest about their findings in this study!!!!

Ocean Fish, Seafood
Could Collapse By 2048 - Study
by Deborah Zabarenko,
November 3, 2006
WASHINGTON - The world's fish and seafood populations will
collapse by 2048 if current trends in habitat destruction and
overfishing continue, resulting in less food for humans,
researchers said on Thursday.
In an analysis of scientific data going back to the 1960s and
historical records over a thousand years, the researchers found
that marine biodiversity -- the variety of ocean fish,
shellfish, birds, plants and micro-organisms -- has declined
dramatically, with 29 percent of species already in collapse.
Extending this pattern into the future, the scientists
calculated that by 2048 all species would be in collapse, which
the researchers defined as having catches decline 90 percent
from the maximum catch.
This applies to all species, from mussels and clams to tuna and
swordfish, said Boris Worm, lead author of the study, which was
published in the current edition of the journal Science.
Ocean mammals, including seals, killer whales and dolphins, are
also affected.
"Whether we looked at tide pools or studies over the entire
world's ocean, we saw the same picture emerging," Worm said in a
statement. "In losing species we lose the productivity and
stability of entire ecosystems. I was shocked and disturbed by
how consistent these trends are -- beyond anything we
suspected."
When ocean species collapse, it makes the ocean itself weaker
and less able to recover from shocks like global climate change,
Worm said.
The decline in marine biodiversity is largely due to
over-fishing and destruction of habitat, Worm said in a
telephone interview from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova
Scotia.
OVER-EXPLOITATION
The loss of biodiversity makes ocean ecosystems less able to
recover from the effects of global climate change, pollution and
over-exploitation, Worm said.
He likened a diverse ocean environment to a diversified
investment portfolio.
With lots of different species in the oceans, just as with lots
of different kinds of investments, "You spread the risk around,"
Worm said. "In the ocean ecosystem, we're losing a lot of the
species in our stock portfolio, and by that we're losing
productivity and stability. by losing stability, we're losing
the ability of the system to self-repair."
"This research shows we'll have few viable fisheries by 2050,"
Andrew Sugden, international managing editor of Science, told
reporters at a telephone news briefing. "This work also shows
that it's not too late to act."
To help depleted areas rebuild, marine-life reserves and
no-fishing zones need to be set up, Worm and other authors of
the study said. This has proven effective in places including
the Georges Bank off the US Atlantic coast, he said.
With marine reserves in place, fishing near the reserves can
improve as much as four-fold, Worm said.
Beyond the economic benefits to coastal communities where
fishing is a critical industry, there are environmental benefits
to rebuilding marine biodiversity, the scientists said.
Depleted coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to invasive species,
disease outbreaks, coastal flooding and noxious algae blooms,
they reported.
Certain kinds of aquaculture -- like the traditional Chinese
cultivation of carp using vegetable waste -- can also be
beneficial, according to the scientists. However, farms that aim
to raise carnivorous fish are less effective.
