Something To Think About

Drug Store Cowboys
By Dan Frosch,
A pharmaceutical company gets sued for bribing doctors to promote a
particular drug. An HIV-positive New Yorker sues a drug store chain for
buying and entering his medical records in a database without his
consent. Two companies get sued for sending out unsolicited free samples
of prescription drugs like Prozac. And on and on.
Manufacturing legal drugs is a growth industry and the latest twist in
the multi-billion dollar drug-pushing game is that your local pharmacy
may be turning into a marketing agency for the big drug companies.
The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (PRC), a consumer advocacy group, filed
a lawsuit in September against supermarket giant Albertsons in
California Superior Court, for allegedly selling the private
prescription drug information of its customers to pharmaceutical
companies. PRC also named 17 pharmaceutical heavyweights, like
AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline, as co-defendants, claiming
that the companies use the information to promote their drugs through
unsolicited phone calls and letters.
LENA'S NOTE: These people have not won their lawsuit and it's
doubtful they ever will... I wrote about this very thing going to happen
last year when the new medical release forms came to be and everyone was
told it was to protect our privacy, when in fact it was the drug
industry's way around our permission...The new medical release forms we
all had to sign in 2002-03 gave doctors and pharmacies the right to give
out our medical records to any pharmaceutical company, insurance company
or pharmacy that requested them with our permission in signing the new
form... Government gave them that freeby as a thank you for giving them
so much campaign money in 2000 and 2001!

TMJ (temporomandibular
joint - jaw joint - disorder) impacts women of childbearing
age more frequently than it effects other segments of the population.
TMJ commonly occurs along with fibromyalgia, migraines, mitral valve
prolapse and other conditions linked to magnesium deficiencies. A major
factor in all of these associations may be that because magnesium gets
depleted through the menstruation process, women of child bearing age
are more likely to be at risk for conditions linked to magnesium
deficiency.

Memory Loss A Big Negative With Conventional Prostate
Cancer Treatment
Testosterone deprivation, or "ablation," is a form of prostate cancer
therapy for men. According to studies, men undergoing this therapy may
forget things faster than healthy men.
The process of testosterone deprivation involves either surgically
removing the testicles or taking medications to block the production of
male hormones, specifically testosterone, which encourages prostate
cancer growth. This prostate cancer therapy eliminates most male
hormones found in the body.
In a study, researchers examined 30 age-matched men -- 14 men undergoing
testosterone deprivation treatment and 16 healthy men. All were
presented with lists of words. The men were asked to identify whether
the words were in capital or lowercase letters, or if they represented
objects that occurred in nature or were artificially made. These studies
examined perceptual and semantic processing.
Researchers found that the initial learning of words, or encoding, for
testosterone-deprived men was equal to that of healthy men. However,
after only two minutes, word retention dropped sharply for men
undergoing the prostate cancer therapy. It was concluded that memory
loss occurs somewhere between encoding and retrieval.
Also, it was suggested that the lack of testosterone might have negative
repercussions on the function of the hippocampus, a curved, elongated
ridge in the brain responsible for learning and memorization.
Ordinarily, hippocampus damage is a result of early Alzheimer's disease
or lesions from strokes.
Since the success of long-term memory relies heavily on the functioning
of the hippocampus, researchers are hoping to discover alternative
prostate cancer therapies that do not adversely affect brain
functioning. Studies are being developed to monitor blood flow changes
within parts of the brain that are activated during memory tests. Future
studies may also allow researchers to examine what testosterone
deprivation does to structures of the brain.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
The Bashful Bulb
Beets or beetroot! So bashful they keep their heads in
the ground.
Some refer to this purplish wonder as beets others as beetroot. Either
way is correct. Some people only eat the root bulb but the greens are
very nutritional and tasty and one of my favorites.
Once you've tasted fresh beets in the peak of their season from June
through October, you'll delight in their sweetness and versatility. I
should mention that they have the highest sugar content of all the
vegetable kingdom. There are factories that process the sugar from the
beets, called Sugar Beet Factories!
Beets and beet greens contain the health building minerals calcium,
Iron, magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese,
Selenium along with the vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, Thiamin,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate, and Retinol.
Experts believe that the red pigmentation of beetroot contains certain
anti-cancer agents. Beetroot has for many years been used as a treatment
for cancer in Europe. Specific anti-carcinogens are bound to the redish/purple
coloring, which supposedly helps fight against cancer and beetroot also
increases the uptake of oxygen by as much as 400 percent. Additional
studies are taking place to add support to these claims.
The green leafy part of the beetroot contains beta-carotene and other
carotenoids,(Carotenoid refers to plant pigments - of which there is
a family of about 600 different types. These all function as
antioxidants. The yellow, orange, and many of the red pigments in
fruits, vegetables, and plant materials are usually carotenoids.)
The roots and greens are especially good for women during their
menstrual period and those planning pregnancy.
Preparing raw beets requires a mindset; put on an apron, to catch the
splatter and roll up your sleeves. Next, tell yourself that for that
entire day you will be the proud owner of a pair of red hands that look
like you just killed someone unless you wear gloves. Then, get to work
on the beets.
For salads, cut off the root and stem ends, peel and coarsely grate the
beets. Place them on the top of an individual salad as a garnish or
serve them in a separate bowl tossed with seasoned rice vinegar to be
passed at the table. If you toss the beets into the salad, the entire
salad will blush. Sometimes this may be a desired effect when you want
to give your veggies a rosy glow.
Beets are famous for blushing or, more commonly called bleeding. To
reduce bleeding and preserve more of the flavor as well as the
nutrients, cut beet tops off, leaving at least 1" of stems intact.
Usually when you buy fresh beetroot it will still have the leaves and
stalks attached. To cook the beetroot simply cut off the stalks making
sure to leave some of the stalk in tact as it helps to hold in the
nutrients.
Beetroot can be steamed or cooked in boiling water. Cooking time can be
from 20 to 50 minutes depending on the size of the beetroot and your
desire for soft or crunchy. Test the beetroot with a skewer: when it's
soft to your desire, remove it from the heat and cool it under running
water - this will make the skin easier to remove for serving.
Try raw:
Grated finely can add to other vegetables.
Mix grated beetroot with raspberry vinegar or seasoned rice vinegar.
Mix grated beetroot, grated orange rind and orange juice for a tasty
salad.
Plain grated beetroot is great on hamburgers or veggie burgers.
You can serve cooked beetroot as a hot vegetable accompaniment to a
meal; or allow it to cool and slice it to put on a homemade burger. Cut
into cubes and stir-fry it with some steamed cubed potatoes and pumpkin.
Add a little garlic and some diced onions ? this makes a delicious
vegetable dish to serve with the rest of your meal.
Roasted: To roast the beets, its best to peel them and cut off the root
and the stem ends. Slice them, toss or spray a tablespoon or two of
Olive oil, and spread them out on a roasting pan. Roast at 400 for about
25 - 30 minutes, turning mid way through. To add a little pizzazz, when
tossing them in the oil prior to roasting, sprinkle with salt and some
dried thyme, dill, marjoram, or oregano ad onion chunks for more flavor.
Prepare the greens as close to the purchase time as possible to retain
all those health benefits. Wash them thoroughly, and coarsely chop. Add
enough water to cover the bottom of the saucepan by 1/2". Squeeze in the
juice of one half lemon and add a little salt, onion powder, lemon
pepper and a hint of cayenne. PACK greens into a smaller saucepan than
you might think you need--one bunch of beet greens cooks down to
practically nothing! Cook uncovered over high heat, which allows some
of the oxalic acid in the greens to escape, a desirable process, since
oxalic acid inhibits the absorption of calcium contained in the greens.
Today's recipe is from a former patient whose mother won a Betty Crocker
baking contest with it years ago and a lot of money, but she gave the
recipe to me so don't worry about it being a copy write problem! This is
oh so good and even my kids and grandkids eat it without knowing what's
in it? Color is nice as well as delightful flavor?

Healthy Holidays Without Deprivation!
(c) By Lena Sanchez
What we do know for sure is; that no/low-fat and no/low-carb
foods are detrimental to your health. Of course your grocers
labels and shelves aren't telling you that.
With the holidays coming up the problem is going to be
overeating of the bad fats. Bad fats being animal and hard
vegetable/animal combinations along with all the sugar your
system can possibly absorb bombarding your poor pancreas.
The particular fads right now are no fat, low carb diets. Yes
it's a fad that's out there and helping make people ill rather
than healthy as you have been led to believe. This premise has
been propagated by the food industry, who has no idea what is
healthy but everything about what it takes to sell you on eating
more then you should, eating processed foods and certainly
things that are going to make them money!
Remember this! No fat in your diet or eating the
majority of no/low fat foods and no/low carb foods on the
grocery shelves can make you ill sooner or later! This is not a
well-known fact and the manufacturers of those products would
not like you to know that. Especially since it directly impacts
their livelihood!
A bad thing with the low-carb, low-fat foods on the shelves
today is the overloading of sugar substitutes packed into them
to compensate setting the stage for making you ill. At the same
time these foods do not prevent obesity but in fact creates more
fat over the long haul, which is supposed to be the reason for
no/low-carb no/low-fat foods.
How do I know this?
A nurse friend worked at a hospital that thought they should
lead the way in being healthy and enlisted a whole group of
nurses and doctors, who worked there, to go with a "no fat"
diet. They carefully created a so-called healthy "NO Fat" diet.
Sorry to say after six months on the no fat diet people began
losing their hair, thyroids were going berserk, their skin began
to dry out and look dehydrated, wrinkles occurred and some began
picking up the patients illnesses and the care taker became the
patient and unable to get over the illness. Nerves were shot and
tensions began to be a problem on each floor that had
volunteered to do the no fat diet. It didnt take them long to
realize that fat is important to our diets and a must for good
health. Luckily when they corrected the no fat diet and added
plant based fat their health returned and hopefully with no
residual bad affects to show up later.
Good fats are necessary to our health!
A study out of Australia had fantastic results on a diet that
has been said to be bad fat by those who don't know! People in
the study who ate 1 1/2 avocados per day lowered their
cholesterol levels from an average of 236 to 217.
Other studies have found that low-carb diets and sugar
substitutes are creating fatter people!
It is important to distinguish between "bad fats" those that
typically come from four-legged animals and "good fats" - those
from fish, nuts, avocados and soybeans and integrate them into
your diet.
For the holidays we all will probably undergo a great "bad fat"
flux with all the cookies, candy, puddings, turkey, ham,
marshmallowed yams, etc. Don't, later, over compensate with
no/low carb or no/low fats and compound the problem. Once will
not kill you but an ongoing diet of that type will!
During this holiday season make lunch your biggest meal, when
you're more likely to burn calories after eating. But don't skip
breakfast to "save up" for the holiday meal - that tactic
usually leads to snacking on sugary & fatty stuff instead. Try
nibbling some almonds, pumpkinseeds or low-fat cheese with fruit
before hitting a party. By depriving yourself you are setting
up for a real shocker after the holidays. Make a light
supper/dinner your key to not gaining all those holiday pounds.
Eat all things in Moderation and forget the no/low fats and
no/low carb foods!!!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Pesticide Study Using Children Postponed
Nov 11, 2004
WASHINGTON (AP) - A planned government study into how children's bodies
absorb pesticides and other chemicals has been temporarily suspended due
to ethical concerns.
The Environmental Protection Agency said it would ask an outside panel
of scientists to review its planned two-year study involving the
families of 60 children in Duval County, Fla., and report back by
spring. The study's design has already been reviewed by four other
external boards, including two universities.
The study was to look at how pesticides, which can cause neurological
damage in children, and chemicals such as flame retardants might be
ingested, inhaled or otherwise absorbed through such things as food,
drink, soil, crop residue and household dust.
"If we decide to go forward with this study, we want to make sure it's
done right," EPA spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman said Wednesday. "There have
been several concerns raised, including within the agency, and we want
to be responsive and address those concerns."
Scientists at EPA and environmentalists questioned whether the
government should give participating families $970 plus a camcorder and
children's clothes, saying it might encourage low-income families to use
pesticides in their homes.
EPA also had agreed to accept $2 million for the $9 million study from
the American Chemistry Council, a trade group that represents chemical
makers.
"It's fine that they pushed the pause button here," said Richard Wiles,
senior vice president for the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy
and research organization. "But for the study to have any integrity at
all, they need to kick the chemical industry lobbyists and their money
completely out of the process."
The trade group said in a statement that more review is useful, but it
still supports the study "because of the great importance of increasing
understanding of the exposures of young children to pesticides and other
chemicals they naturally encounter in their daily lives."

LENA'S NOTE: I told you about the absurdity of this a few weeks
back and it appears that our outrage and emails to the EPA has, at least
for now, stopped this ridiculousness... I can't even believe they would
consider doing this or going forward with this outlandish danger to our
children and grandchildren, but you can bet we haven't heard the last of
this!
