EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++

Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

Oh shucks? Yes, I know that's an old expression but then I'm old so it fits! I thought this was going to be the one year in the fourty-eight of having children that I would get away without cooking for Thanksgiving. My children and grandchildren decided to meet at my oldest son's house for the holiday and my husband wanted to stay home, which I'm really happy with but then my youngest, one fighting thyroid cancer, decided she wanted to spend it with dad and I so she's coming and bringing a friend. There goes my hope of eating out and letting someone else cook. For those in the U.S. it's Thanksgiving week and an excuse for overeating like mad... Pushing the likelihood of a virus attaching itself to your body after overindulging in those fats and desserts! I do hope you've been paying attention to my urging you on preparing your immune system. Those cautions can save your health if adhered to, so enjoy. But remember, moderation is really the safe way of celebrating and your body will thank you for it!

Going to taka some time off this week to do some writing and other things that has been put off long enough! Ezine will return on 11/26/06 enjoy your holiday!

Just remember that attitude has a lot to do with a healthy body right along with habits and diet so take a look at all of you and make sure the attitude is a happy and healthy one! Need help with deciding the best supplements to take on a daily basis to be healthy and happy? Dr. Garland and I will be happy to help with that simply ask!

Have a good week!

Celiac disease: It's common, and commonly misdiagnosed
11/1/2006
By Mary Brophy Marcus,
USA TODAY

Lucia Libreri, 16, stopped growing when she was 8. Four years later after a battery of tests and visits with medical experts, her parents, Rosalia and Luciano, finally found a doctor who pinned down her problem: celiac disease, a condition scientists say is much more widespread in the USA than previously believed.

This summer, the National Institutes of Health launched the Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign to educate physicians and the public about the prevalence of the disease, the myriad of symptoms it can cause and the tests that can detect it.

People with celiac disease can't digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley ? grains commonly used in bread, pasta, cookies and beer. Oats don't contain gluten, but U.S. oats are considered contaminated due to crop rotation and milling.

Less than a decade ago, it was thought celiac disease affected one in every 10,000 Americans, says Michelle Pietzak, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles and founder of website glutenfreemd.com.

But a 2004 report by the health institute, based on research by celiac experts across the country, estimates as many as one in every 133 Americans - approximately 2 million people - may have the disease.

When a person who is genetically prone to celiac disease eats gluten, it triggers an autoimmune response, and the body attacks itself, destroying normal tissues, in particular the villi in the small intestine.

Normally, these tiny, hair-like fingers act to absorb nutrients from food. But when the villi malfunction, the digestive system goes haywire, causing problems such as chronic diarrhea, gas, bloating, reflux and constipation.

A small bit will cause

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

The psychology department of the University of South Alabama wanted to see what effect different types of music had.

They found 21 men and 24 women, and randomly assigned them to listen to classical, hard rock, self-selected relaxing music or no music at all. The results? Classical music induced feelings of relaxation, as did the self-selected relaxing music. And -- perhaps surprisingly so according to the journal Applied Psychophysiological Feedback -- the subjects were just as relaxed with no music at all.

Stuffy nose is a Viagra side effect
Joe Graedon Teresa Graedon:
The People's Pharmacy
November 6, 2006

I have taken both Viagra and Cialis. They work well, but I do get sinus-pressure headaches when I take these drugs. I feel this has contributed to sinus infections that have required lengthy courses of antibiotics. Is this possible?

Pharmacist remark: Nasal stuffiness is a relatively common reaction to drugs for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. People who experience chronic congestion may develop an infection and sinusitis as a consequence.

Viagra may cause vision loss

Recently, I've experienced total loss of vision for a minute or two, plus occasional double vision. My doctor concluded that Viagra was causing these visual problems. (I have taken it once or twice a week for quite some time.) He told me that if I continue using it, I might have a total loss of vision. Would Cialis or Levitra be an alternative?

Pharmacist remark: The Food and Drug Administration has warned patients that a loss of vision associated with Viagra, as well as Cialis or Levitra, could be an early warning sign. Some men taking these drugs have become blind as a result of a condition, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, that occurs when blood can't flow easily to the optic nerve.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

That golden treasure full of taste and health!

It's that time of year again. This week will most likely find the most pumpkin consumption of the whole year. Traditional Thanksgiving pie tends to be pumpkin!

The warm, comforting smell of spicy pumpkin pies and muffins fills our homes, and our summer floral centerpieces are replaced by playful displays of pumpkins and gourds. A member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not really sure about? A fruit or vegetable? Gourds are supposed to be in the squash family, I thought, and since pumpkin is also listed by many as a gourd I don't know about the fruit aspect. That decision isn't set in stone and some say fruit and some vegetable. So take your pick!

Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and was nasalized by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor. American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The "pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a d
écor. Most assuredly is much greater for eating!

Thanksgiving in the U.S. brought along the pumpkin pie tradition. Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie crust and not a filling.

The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health.

Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and offers protect against heart disease and other illnesses. Beta-carotene offers protection against other diseases as well.

Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup organic, boiled and drained, without salt - contains;

Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3 grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg, Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg, Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.

Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them.  Now if she had only use those for eating she might not have thyroid cancer now?

Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. I still plan on doing that one day.

Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites, of which I may be a bit skeptical that it worked very well? But why not? Native American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine, while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills," and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel worms.

Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four Greater Cold Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today pumpkin is employed to treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints, namely benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic, and the seeds' principal constituent, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The presence of zinc and amino acids further treat BPH. Pumpkin is not said to reduce prostate enlargement but to relieve symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are also thought to help relieve dizziness.

Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children, for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for burns.

My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins great health inducing nutrients and nobody will know they are getting doubly health nutrients!

Lena's Pumpkin Pie

Need: 2 uncooked 9" pie crusts
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.

Ingredients:
1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 1/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon nutmeg

Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy, three to four minutes. Stop the machine every once in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's blades, if needed. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps.

Pour into pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts edges are dark brown (but not burned) and a knife stuck into the middle comes out clean.

PS: Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I will line the outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and bake. Gives a slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?

Enjoy your healthy treat,

Lena

Hemophilia Drug Used on GIs Labeled Risk
Nov 18, 2006

BALTIMORE (AP) - A blood-coagulating drug designed to treat rare forms of hemophilia is being used on critically wounded U.S. troops in Iraq despite evidence it can cause clots that lead to strokes, heart attacks and death in other patients, The (Baltimore) Sun reported for Sunday's editions.

Recombinant Activated Factor VII, which is made by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, is approved in the United States for treating forms of hemophilia that affect fewer than 3,000 Americans. It costs $6,000 a dose.

The Food and Drug Administration said in a warning last December that giving Factor VII to patients who don't have the blood disorder could cause strokes and heart attacks. Its researchers published a study in January blaming 43 deaths on clots that developed after injections of Factor VII.

However, the Army medical command considers it a medical breakthrough that gives front-line physicians a way to control deadly bleeding. Physicians in Iraq have injected it into more than 1,000 patients, reported The Sun, which makes its first Sunday edition available Saturday afternoon.

"When it works, it's amazing," said Col. John B. Holcomb, an Army trauma surgeon and commander of the Army's Institute of Surgical Research. "It's one of the most useful new tools we have."

Critics strongly disagree.

"It's a completely irresponsible and inappropriate use of a very, very dangerous drug," said Dr. Jawed Fareed, director of the hemostasis and thrombosis research program at Loyola University in Chicago and a specialist in blood-clotting and blood-thinning medications.

Military doctors said patients requiring transfusions of 10 or more units of blood have a 25 percent to 50 percent chance of dying from their injuries, and there is enough evidence of the drug's effectiveness to continue promoting its use.

"I've seen it with my own eyes," said Air Force Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bailey, a trauma surgeon deployed this summer as senior physician at the American military hospital in Balad, Iraq. "Patients who are hemorrhaging to death, they get the drug and it stops. Factor VII saves their lives."

However, doctors at military hospitals in Germany and the United States have reported unusual and sometimes fatal blood clots in soldiers evacuated from Iraq, including unexplained strokes, heart attacks and pulmonary embolisms, or blood clots in the lungs. And some have begun to suspect Factor VII, The Sun reported.

Contacted Saturday by The Associated Press, an Army spokeswoman, Mary Ann Hodges, declined to comment immediately on the report because she had not seen it.

22 States Say EPA Too Soft on Mercury
Nov 17, 2006
By JOHN HEILPRIN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Air quality regulators in at least 22 states have concluded that the Bush administration's approach to cutting mercury pollution from coal-burning power plants is too weak and are pursuing tougher measures of their own.

Mercury is a powerful neurotoxin that accumulates in fish and poses the greatest risk of nerve and brain damage to pregnant women, women of childbearing age and young children. Emissions of mercury total about 48 tons a year, most of it in the form of air pollution that winds up in waterways.

The trend of states bucking the Bush administration became apparent Friday, the deadline for states to submit their plans for reducing toxic mercury emissions to the Environmental Protection Agency. States' responses were tallied by the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.

"At least 22 states have gone beyond EPA's rule in three ways," said Bill Becker, the association's executive director. "They have either adopted more stringent regulations, accelerated compliance deadlines or restricted interstate trading of mercury. Some have done more than one of those."

States most frequently chose to require cuts of up to 90 percent in mercury pollution, speed up federal requirements by about three to five years or reject the administration's decision to let companies turn to the marketplace to buy and sell rights to emit mercury.

Becker estimated that the tougher state rules would generally add about $1 a month to the average household's utility bills.

The rest of the states are roughly split among those accepting EPA's regulations as sufficient and those that are still trying to figure out what they plan to do, according to Dan Riedinger, a spokesman for Edison Electric Institute, a utility trade association that favors the EPA approach.

"Clearly, some individual utilities will be able to exceed this level of reduction or may be able to reduce emissions more quickly," Riedinger said. But he also said many companies will be hard pressed to meet even the federal requirements because the new technologies are still being tested and manufacturers are reluctant to guarantee they'll work.

The EPA adopted new regulations in March 2005 that the agency said could force mercury reductions of 70 percent by 2018 from coal-fired power plants, the source of 40 percent of the nation's mercury pollution. The agency set a nationwide cap on mercury pollution, and put a ceiling on allowable pollution for each state starting in 2010.

That would allow companies to choose between installing new technologies to trap mercury particles in exhaust vents or paying other companies to instead reduce their pollution.

EPA estimated that with the trading mechanism, mercury pollution from power plants could be cut in half by 2020 at an eventual cost of $750 million a year to utilities and users of electricity. Deeper cuts would take a few more years, the agency said.

Idaho, Rhode Island and Vermont are excluded from any regulations because they have no coal-burning power plants.

Becker said many states informed his group they viewed the trading system as "extremely problematic" because it would create so-called hot spots of pollution in waterways. "By allowing a utility in Ohio to trade with one in Florida, for example, it may improve mercury levels in one of those states," he said, "but it will continue to exacerbate the levels in the other state."

The states' responses also reflect the fast-changing nature of a carbon injection technology for trapping mercury in power plant exhaust systems. Once considered effective only for coal mined in the East, the technology is now also working better with lower-sulfur coals mined in the West, Becker said.

The 22 states listed as having tougher mercury-cutting plans than the federal government are: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
