On the very day when AstraZeneca's™
cholesterol-lowering statin drug Crestor was approved to treat
atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), it was revealed it
wasn't helping patients with heart problems. The drug doesn't help
prevent heart patients from suffering a heart attack or stroke, and it
certainly doesn't reduce their chances of dying from a heart problem yet
the FDA gave it's approval for that very thing. How's that for not
looking out for the public?

Researchers from the University of Chicago recently discovered that
ginseng may be able to reduce blood sugar levels by as much as 30
percent. Not really new information as research back in 2005 said
ginseng has the ability to lower blood sugar in people with type 2
diabetes. But the form of ginseng these researchers used in their study
added a new twist. Typically, ginseng supplements come in tablet or
capsule form, which are created using extracts from the root or leaves
of the plant. The University of Chicago researchers, on the other hand,
used an extract from American ginseng berries grown in Wisconsin in
their study. The researchers are hopeful that ginseng berry juice might
soon join the ranks of other superjuices like pomegranate and acai.
Really too early to predict what will happen in the future but if you
are diabetic take ginseng as an assist in lowering and controlling your
blood sugar!

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The recent chatter on a popular social networking site dealt
with a problem often overlooked in medicine: mistakes in patients' medical
charts.
The twist was the patients were doctors irked to discover gaffes in their own
records and sloppy note-taking among their fellow physicians.
The frank dialogue on a doctors-only Web forum opened a window into a little
discussed topic among physicians who find themselves on the other end of the
stethoscope.
Take Dr. Richard Botney who swapped experiences with fellow doctors. Several
years ago, Botney visited a specialist to check out a bothersome lump in his
cheek. He took some medicine and the problem went away.
Out of curiosity, Botney thumbed through his chart and was surprised to find a
note from the doctor saying he had a stroke.
"I never even had the symptoms of a stroke. No visual changes, no weakness, no
numbness, nothing," Botney, an anesthesiologist at Oregon Health & Science
University, said in a telephone interview from Portland.
Medical chart blunders are not uncommon. Sometimes, the mistakes can be
harmless, but others such as an inaccurate diagnosis or a wrong medication could
have serious consequences.
Errors can creep into medical charts in various ways. Doctors are often under
time pressure and may find themselves taking shortcuts or not fully listening to
a patient's problems. Others rely on their memory to update their patients'
files at the end of the day. Other mistakes can arise from illegible handwriting
or coding problems.
"There is an implicit trust," said Gerald Kominski, associate director of the
UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. "Most of us want to believe our doctors
are hearing what we're saying and are accurately reporting that in our medical
histories."
Dr. Jerome Groopman, author of "How Doctors Think," said the onus is on doctors
to check the accuracy of records with first-time patients even if it takes
several visits.
"You need to force yourself as a doctor to pause and to look meticulously at the
record - to think, to question and to verify," said Groopman, professor of
medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The online doctor's Web site, Sermo, tackled the issue of medical chart accuracy
this summer.
Posting under screen names, one physician with multiple sclerosis wrote about
having trouble getting an insurance company to pay for a drug after the chart
incorrectly noted a diagnosis of "multiple brain tumors." Another who took over
a practice had to overhaul the charting system after finding errors in the old
records. A third who had had several operations was shocked to see results of
physicals and other tests in the medical charts that were never performed.
The American Medical Association, which represents doctors and medical students,
doesn't have a specific project aimed at improving medical charting, but it's
always looking at ways to better patient care, said Dr. Robert Wah, a board
trustee.
A possible fix is to go paperless. But electronic medical records are expensive
and sometimes different systems don't talk to one another. Only about 10 percent
of doctors nationwide use some sort of electronic system.
While electronic records can cut down on medication and transcription errors,
it's not a panacea.
"You still need someone who's listening to the patient and deciding what needs
to go in the records," said Dr. David Blumenthal, director of the Institute for
Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital.
In the meantime, health experts recommend that patients periodically check their
medical records as they would their credit report, especially if they have a
chronic condition. Patients have the right to get a copy of their medical
records under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act,
or HIPAA
Botney, the 52-year-old doctor whose records said he had a stroke, still doesn't
know how the error occurred. He flagged the mistake to his specialist, but
hasn't taken further action since the error hasn't affected his insurance or
disability coverage.
Despite his experience, Botney said he is impressed with his current doctor, who
took an hour to review his chart during the first visit.
In his own job, Botney said he takes copious notes in visits with patients and
then reads them back.
"They expect that what they tell the doctor is what's going to be charted," he
said.

Let's be honest for a moment. There's no question that over the
years I've tweaked the FDA, Canadian, and European regulators
for some of the outrageously absurd positions they've taken when
it comes to alternative health and supplements. Then again, I've
also praised them on those occasions that I believe they've done
the right thing. But of all their positions and all their calls,
none brings their credibility more into question than their
position regarding stevia. Understand, I have no investment in
stevia. I use it in a couple of formulas, but it is hardly
essential to what I do. That said, I believe that an exploration
of the regulators' position on stevia speaks volumes as to their
overall position on alternative health. So, without further
ado...
What is stevia?
Stevia is a tropical plant native to South America. Its extract
has up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. Although some people
complain of its staying power in the mouth or its sometimes
licorice-like aftertaste, it is a popular natural alternative
sweetener. As a sweetener, it is low glycemic and has added
benefits in potentially helping to control obesity, enhance
glucose tolerance, and reduce blood pressure. You would think
that with this kind of pedigree, it would qualify as the perfect
sugar substitute and be approved for use as an alternative
sweetener everywhere. You would be half right. It is widely used
throughout Asia (particularly Japan) and South America -- not so
in the US, most of Europe, and Canada, where it is banned as a
food additive. In the United States, and Canada it's allowed as
a supplement, but not in food. In Europe, it's only allowed as
an additive to animal feed.

Google Plans Big
Renewable Energy Push

FRANCISCO - Google Inc said on Tuesday the Web services and
online advertising group plans to spend hundreds of millions of
dollars in coming years to promote a new push to encourage cheap
renewable electricity.
The project, known as Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal, is
hiring engineers and targeted investment financing at advanced
solar thermal power, wind power technologies, enhanced
geothermal systems and other new technologies, Google said.
Google is, in effect, taking advantage of its growing mountain
of cash, global brand recognition and mushrooming market
capitalization as a pulpit to campaign for alternative energy.
The company's leaders argue that the time is ripe for
investments in innovative research to cut energy costs.
"Our goal is to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy
capacity that is cheaper than coal. We are optimistic this can
be done in years, not decades," Larry Page, Google's co-founder
and president of products, said in a statement.
One gigawatt can power a city the size of San Francisco.
Google is seeking to capitalize on the recent excitement among
Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to apply the risk taking that
computer, biotech and Internet businesses are famous for to the
field of alternative energy production.
Google's latest moves come as the price of a barrel of oil nears
US$100 and coal, which produces 40 percent of the world's
electricity, faces regulatory and environmental pressures that
could drive up prices.
Working with its philanthropic arm Google.org, the company said
it plans to spend tens of millions of dollars in 2008 on
research and development and related efforts in renewable
energy.
Eventually, the Mountain View, California-based company said it
will spend hundreds of millions of dollars in "breakthrough
renewable energy projects which generate positive returns."
"Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal" is hiring engineers and
energy experts to lead its research and development work. It
said it will begin on solar thermal technology and will also
investigate enhanced geothermal systems and other areas.
Page said Google gained experience in designing large-scale
energy projects through its investments in energy-efficient
computer data centers. The roofs of Google's headquarters
buildings also boasts one of the biggest solar energy
installations of any US company.
"We want to apply the same creativity and innovation to the
challenge of generating renewable electricity at globally
significant scale and produce it cheaper than from coal," Page
