Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Something To Think About
===================

YOUR LIVER AND YOUR HEALTH!

One of the largest and most important organs in the body, the liver is located behind the lower right part of the ribs.

Among your liver's primary jobs...

* To store fats, sugar, vitamins and other nutrients from the food
you eat.
* To make bile (a must for the digestion of fats).
* To make cholesterol (which, in spite of its negative reputation,
plays a vital role in the body).
* To make other key chemicals your body needs to stay healthy.
* To break down of toxic substances such as alcohol and drugs.
* To remove waste products from the blood.

Your liver is bombarded daily by fats, sugars, environmental toxins, such as lotions, food additives, chlorine byproducts in your water, unclean air and much more. Any OTC or prescribed drug is a chemical that your liver has to filter out. All these things set you up for ill health! Are you the lucky one with a strong liver and long lifeline or are you one who is destined to have your liver stop working then the weakest organ in your body may become ill. What to do?

KEEP YOUR LIVER IN TIP-TOP SHAPE

If well cared for, your liver will take good care of you. It lets you down, however, when you mistreat it. Start by treating it well!!! Mineral balance is the first line of defense! Proper diet and plenty of rest! Fill Up on Fiber! Chew Your Food Well! The liver plays a key role in the digestion of fats, and contrary to what you hear in ads, Dr. Andrew Rubman notes that there is no such thing as "excess stomach acid. Monitor Your Drug Intake! Even ordinary over-the-counter (OTC) medicines can be harmful to the liver, with acetaminophen (Tylenol) being one of the most ingested as it is in most cold remedies and other pain relievers and toxifies the liver and kills it..."

Supplement with natural botanical/plant minerals and vitamins to keep your liver nourished and healthy.

Thought For The Day
=================

Today's cosmetics can do more than just make you look good.

According to a Finnish study, there are hidden ingredients that could be dangerous. The Consumer Agency and Ombudsman for Product Safety in Helsinki measured the levels of poisons in 25 brands of eye shadow, in 88 colors. They were looking for evidence of lead, arsenic, chromium, cobalt and nickel. According to a report in the journal Contact Dermatitis, they did find these metals present as impurities in eye shadow. But they were present in extremely small amounts.. On the other hand, people who have been sensitized to any of the impurities might have a skin reaction after contact with these tiny amounts. And because the metals are impurities, they aren't listed as ingredients. They may even be present in some batches, and not in others.

So if you have a reaction to your cosmetics, change brands.

Heart Association's Offers New CPR Guidelines
Nov 28, 2005
By JAMIE STENGLE

DALLAS (AP) - In a radical change from the way everyday people do CPR, new recommendations urge many more chest compressions.

The revised guidelines issued Monday by the American Heart Association on cardiopulmonary resuscitation change the ratio of chest compressions to rescue breaths from 15 compressions for every two rescue breaths to 30 compressions for every two rescue breaths.

And while the guidelines advocate a "back to basics" approach for the public, they recommend that emergency personnel get more high-tech by cooling cardiac arrest patients for 12 to 24 hours to about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Two significant studies have shown that such cooling resulted in improved survival and brain function for those who were comatose after initial resuscitation.

More than 300,000 Americans die each year of cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops beating. The heart association estimates that more than 95 percent of cardiac arrest victims die before they get to the hospital.

Studies show that the chest compressions create more blood flow through the heart to the rest of the body, buying time until a defibrillator can be used or the heart can pump blood on its own. Studies have also shown that blood circulation increases with each chest compression and must be built back up after an interruption, the association says in its online journal Circulation.

"Since the 2000 guidelines, research has strengthened our emphasis on effective CPR as a critically important step in helping save lives," said Dr. Robert Hickey, chair of the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular Care programs.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Punica proto-punica, Granada (Spanish), Grenade (French).

This round reddish fruit is sitting in markets these day in large quantities and something you should consider as a health food!

The pomegranate a native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. It is widely cultivated throughout India and the drier parts of Southeast Asia, Malaya, East Indies and tropical Africa. The tree was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Now grown for its fruits mainly in the drier parts of California and Arizona.

Granted, it is a bit messy and can stain clothes mercilessly, but the unique sweet taste and health benefits are well worth it. Recent research to identify foods high in antioxidants have brought the pomegranate into the forefront of the antioxidants with its high levels of polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins -- all thought to be important parts of our cancer-prevention arsenal. Food seeds of all kinds are rich in fiber ? including the pomegranate - making for a healthy intestinal system. "Prostate, breast, and colon cancer rates are higher in populations consuming relatively large quantities of meat and lower in populations whose diet is rich in ?seed foods.?" Journal of the American Medical Association

The pomegranate tree is a neat, rounded shrub or small tree that can grow to 20 or 30 ft., but more typically to 12 to 16 ft. in height. Dwarf varieties are also known. The trunk is covered by a red-brown bark which later becomes gray. Pomegranates are also long-lived. There are specimens in Europe that are known to be over 200 years of age. The vigor of a pomegranate declines after about 15 years, however.

The pomegranate fruit is almost a perfect round, 2-1/2 to 5 in. wide fruit with a crowned base known as a calyx. The tough, leathery skin or rind is typically yellow underneath and overlaid with light or deep pink or rich red. The inner fruits are separated by membranous walls and white, spongy, bitter tissue into compartments packed with sacs filled with sweetly acid, juicy, red, pink or whitish pulp. In each sac there is one angular, soft or hard seed.

Pomegranate is a delicious fruit, which has many potential beneficial compounds. Pomegranate has substances, such as polyphenols, that have antioxidant, anti-viral, and anti-tumor activity. Rich in the minerals Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper and Selenium along with Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, total ascorbic acid  Thiamin  Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid making for a very healthy food! Pomegranate may also be helpful in maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin reported that a pomegranate extract inhibited skin tumors in mice, while the red wine compound reseveratrol, applied topically, inhibited the expression of a cancer-causing protein normally caused by exposure to UVB rays. Pomegranate fruit extract (PFE)  contains several polyphenols and anthocyanidins (pigment that gives certain fruits their dark red color), which demonstrates a higher antioxidant activity than that of red wine and green tea, according to the Wisconsin researchers.

Seed removal tip:
Cut out the blossom end, remove some of the white pith, but do not break the red pulp around the seeds. Score the skin into quarters. Break the pomegranate into halves and then halve again following score lines. Bend back the rind and pull out the seeds.

Uses of the pomegranate;

The juice gives a unique fresh flavor to sauces and marinades for fish, chicken, and beef. Use the seeds to garnish fruit salad, dessert, and appetizers. Pomegranate juice is the original ingredient in Grenadine although contemporary manufacturers may utilize a synthetic.

The seeds and crimson pulp may be added to fruit salad for a touch of color and flavor.

To extract the juice, separate and crush the edible portion of ripe pomegranates (do not remove seeds at this point). Place fruit in jelly cloth or bag and squeeze out the juice, or cut the fruit in quarters and juice with a juicer. Most juicers will automatically extract the juice and discard the seeds.

The juice can be frozen in 1/2 pint or 1 pint containers, to make into punch later on.

Pomegranate Syrup
is absolutely fantastic with pancakes, waffles or French toast... To make it;

Boil together 3 1/2 cups pomegranate juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/3 teaspoon salt and 1/2 bottle liquid pectin. When mixture cannot be stirred down, add 5 1/2 cups sugar and boil for 5 or 6 minutes.

Enjoy your red food!
Lena

HEALTH TODAY

^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Here is a tidbit that won't make for good sleeping...

According to an Associated Press article from a few weeks ago, a group of RAND Corporation, a research company, used researchers posing as emergency physicians and allied government health centers across the country in a sort of "medical secret shopper" exercise. During the calls, made to public health centers in communities of all sizes, they described ABSOLUTE symptoms of various bio-toxins the DHS has determined are likely to be loosed on us by terrorists. The "doctors" they spoke to at each clinic in the context of treating an actual patient exhibiting the symptoms.

And although the rate of response for these clinics turned out to better than expected (91% of those that couldn't answer the phone returned calls in less than 30 minutes), NOT ONE of the sample of 19 clinics suggested isolating a "patient" exhibiting the textbook signs of highly contagious smallpox! Also, in none of these interactions did the government "action officer" even advise the caller to use any kind of protective equipment or procedures to avoid contracting the disease.

Beyond this, one of these "suppose to be doctor's" even told a RAND imposter doc to "go back to bed" because no other cases of the disease being described (in that instance, bubonic plague) had been reported in the area... This, despite the fact that bubonic plague is NOT TRANSMISSABLE from person-to-person, but rather the result of an infected flea's bite. Where did that idiot come from?  What if that had been an actual person taken ill? That's the most scary part...

Needless to say, the study, funded by the department of Health and Human Services, points to some dismally discouraging shortcomings in our emergency terror response mechanism. There are 2,800 such clinics across the United States, and if each of them is advising first response doctors this poorly, we're in major trouble, folks...

LENA'S COMMENT: If you want a prayer of a chance in a situation like this you better have your immune system working up to maximum... Want to know how Email Me

As noise rises, so do the dangers The constant clatter in hospitals stresses both patients and staff.
By Marianne Szegedy-Maszak, LA Times

Even Florence Nightingale thought that all the noise in hospitals was harmful.

"Unnecessary noise is the most cruel abuse of care which can be inflicted on either the sick or the well," she wrote in her 1859 book, "Notes on Nursing."

Victorian hospitals are now museums, but a new study has found that Nightingale's observation is even more accurate for the high-tech hospitals of today. As the decibel levels in hospitals have steadily increased during the last five decades, so has the suffering of patients and staff.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University took a look at the problem of noise in hospitals and found that the contemporary version of the "cruel abuse of care" translates into stressed workers, raises the risk of medical errors because instructions aren't properly heard, and can even interfere with healing and recovery.

Add to these problems the results of two other recent studies that link excessive noise to a higher risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure, and our cacophonous environment begins to look like a serious public health problem.

The study began when a vice president at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore asked Eileen Busch-Vishniac and James West ? not medical doctors but acoustics experts ? to evaluate the noise levels in the pediatric intensive care unit and make recommendations to address the problem.

Their investigation then broadened to look at the levels throughout the hospital. The team made 24-hour sound measurements of every area, including operating rooms and patient waiting rooms, and developed a "sound picture" of the environment.

The picture was almost deafening. The Johns Hopkins researchers first performed an analysis of all the previous research on the subject and found that in 1995 the World Health Organization had issued noise guidelines for hospitals that put the preferable noise levels in patients' rooms at 35 decibels. They learned that few, if any, hospitals achieve that level of peace.

Johns Hopkins was consistent with the average noise levels in hospitals everywhere, which have risen dramatically since 1960, from 57 decibels to 72; evening levels have similarly soared from 42 decibels to 60.

Busch-Vishniac, a professor of mechanical engineering at Hopkins, points out that the problem is epidemic. "Whether you are in Islamabad, Athens, Nairobi or all over the U.S., we found the measurements were the same everywhere," she says.

But where was all this clamor coming from?

The researchers began at the pediatric ICU. Each bed was surrounded by beeping instruments with intrusive pumps or blasts of warning signals. Overhead, the sound of doctors and nurses being paged added to the ambient noise, not to mention the ongoing conversation among doctors, nurses, patients, families, orderlies and other staff members ? each trying to speak just a little bit louder to be heard.

Busch-Vishniac describes the phenomenon as the "cocktail party effect," in which everyone incrementally speaks more loudly to be heard as the noise level around them increases.

Her colleague West, professor of electrical and computer engineering, says that this process of gradually talking louder is exhausting for speaker and listener alike. "Having to talk louder and having to be more attentive just to listen to others is considered one of the reasons that hospital staff suffers from fatigue," he says.

Blood pressure rises

Patients simply longing for a decent night of sleep suffer as well. Even though fewer people populate the hospital's halls at night, the combination of the powerful hospital ventilation system and alarm-laden electronic devices throughout still makes a hospital bear more resemblance to a 24-hour shopping mall than a quiet place where people can heal.

The serious and specific health risks of noise were examined in two other studies published this month. A University of Michigan study in the Archives of Environmental Health suggests that working in loud places can increase blood pressure levels. And another study of more than 4,000 cardiac patients, published in the European Heart Journal ? Europe's leading cardiac journal ? linked exposure to chronic noise with an increased risk of heart attacks.

In the blood pressure study, Michigan researchers studied workers in a Midwest auto assembly plant and looked at different types of noise in the factory setting. Continuous or "usual" noise was recorded at between 42 and 103 decibels. Elevated noise ranged between 46 and 124 decibels, and spikes in instantaneous loud noises went from 113 to 145 decibels.

The researchers gave factory workers mobile monitors that took blood pressure readings every 10 minutes and recorded noise levels every minute throughout the day.

Each time the average noise exposure increased by 10 decibels, systolic blood pressure crept up an average of 2 millimeters of mercury ? which is how blood pressure is measured. When the noise increased by 13 decibels, diastolic blood pressure also rose by an average of 2 millimeters.

The European study involved all 32 hospitals in Berlin between 1998 and 2001 and was designed to look at the association between the annoyance that chronic noise triggers in people and its effect on heart attacks in men and women.

When the body experiences annoyance, a whole set of physiological changes occur, such as increased levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are associated with increased blood pressure and inflammatory responses that are implicated in heart disease and heart attacks. If noise triggers those responses, then it could be considered a real risk factor for cardiac problems.

The team found that the general noise in the environment, like traffic or airplanes, affected both genders and increased the overall risk of a heart attack by nearly 50% for men and 75% for women.

Then there was workplace din, which was a problem for men, increasing their risk by nearly a third, but which did not seem to affect women.

Quieter halls

The Johns Hopkins researchers came up with two sophisticated solutions to the hospital problem. They found that the hospital did not have acoustical ceiling tiles, which can harbor infectious organisms, becoming in effect acoustical petri dishes. But the researchers came up with a substitute: By wrapping fiberglass insulation inside an antibacterial fabric, they created sound absorbers, which they then attached to the ceiling and walls of an oncology unit, muffling some of the sounds that used to bounce freely in the area.

To lessen the blasts from the pages announced over loudspeakers, the pediatric ICU staff was given small, hands-free personal communicators. The system cut the frequency of overheard pages from one every minute or so to about one an hour.

The simplest solution, however, may be decidedly low-tech ? one that even Florence Nightingale could have prescribed.

If you go to the hospital, says Busch-Vishniac, "I would strongly recommend wearing earplugs."
