Anyone here remember avian flu? You know, nasty disease, kills everyone. Even the UK's very own chief medical officer of health Sir Liam Donaldson told an expectant public earlier this year that 750,000 Brits would die from it any time now.

In fact, it's killed just over 150 people worldwide in three years.

So, yes, it has gone a bit quiet of late, but then the governments of the world have already stockpiled every last available shipment of Tamiflu (oseltamivir), the antiviral that's useless against avian flu, so there's no point in continuing the hype.

The UK government has bought 14.6 million doses of the useless drug, while the US government has gone for 20 million doses of the stuff.

Even sensible Canada went avian flu crazy, and bought in truckloads of Tamiflu, despite the sober observations of its health minister that it was pointless buying an antidote to a disease that couldn't yet be passed among humans.

Tamiflu's manufacturer, Roche, admits in the small print its drug won't do a thing against avian flu - one of several admissions it has made this week.

The US drug regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has also asked Roche to reveal that Tamiflu can cause the patient to become so delirious that he starts harming himself. Self-injury, confusion and delirium are not uncommon, Roche has admitted, especially if it's taken by a child. It can also cause anaphylactic shock, serious skin reactions, nausea, vomiting, bronchitis, insomnia and vertigo.

These latest admissions throw into even starker contrast the strange statement made by the World Health Organization earlier this year that Tamiflu is our best defence against avian flu.

The truth is that we don't have a pharmaceutical defence against the H5N1 virus because it doesn't yet exist as a disease that's transmitted between humans. And as a virus mutates one million times more frequently than DNA the best we can ever hope for is a vaccine that fights last year's virus.

How to Eat Fewer Pesticides

There have been some ratings revisions since the last Guide came out in October 2003. For instance, carrots are off the "bad" list now but lettuce is on it. Cauliflower has fallen from grace but cabbage has made the cut and is now on the "good list." Here are the full lists.

To come up with its rankings, the Environmental Working Group looked at the results of close to 43,000 tests for pesticides on produce by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A computer analysis by the EWG found that consumers could reduce their pesticide exposure by nearly 90 percent by avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated instead. People who eat the "Dirty Dozen" will be exposed to an average of 15 different pesticides per day, says Richard Wiles, executive director of the Environmental Working Group, while eating from the "Cleanest 12" means you'll be exposed to less than two pesticides per day. So if produce from the "Dirty Dozen" is on your menu, it makes sense from a health standpoint to choose organic.

Cruciferous Or Not?

"You are what we eat," was a mantra from parents and teachers when I was growing up, oh so many years ago! Sadly the world has been sold a bill of goods in later years and have been told that that isn't the case... Wrong!

Yes! It still is the truth and study after study backs that premise up.

True our foods are about 1/3 what they were in nutrient value fifty years ago but still they are effective along with supplementing... One of the latest on "You are what you eat!"

Cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy have met their match in broccoli and brussels sprouts. These cruciferous vegetables and others can selectively kills cancer cells, researchers in New Zealand have discovered.

A natural chemical compound in the vegetables called isothiocyanates has been found to cause cell-suicide in cancer cells possessing high levels of the protein Bcl-2. The protein is found in abundance in cancer cells that resist chemotherapy treatment. Yet investigators at Otago University's Christchurch found that even cancer cells with Bcl-2 are susceptible to the natural cancer-fighting ability of isothiocyanates.

Cruciferous vegetables have long been known as potent weapons in the prevention of many cancers. Cauliflower, cabbage, and watercress are also in the cruciferous family.

So it only makes sense to eat them!

Church Rock Mine, N.M. -- Most of the mining companies that drilled, dug and blasted for uranium on the Navajo reservation during the Cold War did nothing to repair the environmental damage they left behind. For a time, tribal leaders staked their hopes for a cleanup on Superfund, the landmark legislation that forces polluters to pay for remediation of toxic sites.

More than 1,000 abandoned mines are scattered across the Navajo homeland, which covers 27,000 square miles in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

Such a comprehensive cleanup is "exactly what Superfund was designed for," said Paul Connor, a lawyer who once directed Superfund enforcement policy for the Environmental Protection Agency.

It hasn't happened. Bureaucratic delays and misunderstandings between the tribe and the EPA have prevented the Navajos from tapping Superfund's deep pockets and broad legal authority.

Instead, the tribe reluctantly settled for a partial cleanup under a separate program. That effort left many hazards untouched.

You would think after all these years we would have learned to be more compassionate and help to undo what we did to them when they were put into captivity and all their ethics killed! It's time to stop mistreating people and do what's right regardless of race, creed or gender!
