Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

As we near the end of short days and longer nights the weather gets a bit nastier and colder in our part of the world. The uniqueness of it is that half the world is right the opposite. Just another reminder that we are all different and our choices are different depending on the part of the world we live in. One things is similar all over the world, this time of the year, the holiday season that puts stress on so many and that stress kills the immune system opening the body for any virus or bacteria in the vicinity... So it's important to keep that immune system as healthy as possible to assure your health.

Something To Think About
============================

Studies find supplement users tend to weigh less and experience less hunger

An article published online ahead of print recently in the British Journal of Nutrition revealed the finding of Canadian researchers that consumers of nutritional supplements, particularly men, weigh less on average than those who don't use the supplements. Additionally, a second study reported in the article found an appetite suppressive effect in women associated with multinutrient supplementation.

For the first investigation, Dr Angelo Tremblay of Laval University and colleagues analyzed responses to a questionnaire and dietary and physical activity diary completed by 267 men and 320 women aged 20 to 65 who participated in phase 2 of the Quebec Family Study. Resting energy expenditure and body weight were measured, and body density, body fat, and fat mass were calculated. A subgroup of participants was questioned concerning dietary restraint, disinhibition, and susceptibility to hunger (a measure of an individual's ability to cope with feeling hungry).

In the second study, 63 obese men and women with no nutritional supplement use within six months of beginning the study were enrolled in a weight loss program for 15 weeks. Participants received individualized daily calorie targets, and were divided to receive a multinutrient supplement or a placebo for the duration of the study.

The first study revealed significantly lower weight, fat mass and body mass index among male supplement users after adjusting for various factors, as well as greater resting energy expenditure. These characteristics were also found among female participants, but were less pronounced. In the subgroup analysis, women who reported that they consumed supplements were found to have significantly lower disinhibition and hunger, while men's slightly reduced scores in these areas were not considered statistically significant.

Although the second study did not find increased weight loss among multinutrient supplement users compared with nonusers, it did find a reduction in appetite among women who used supplements, which could be useful in helping women cope with the increase in hunger that accompanies dieting and weight loss.

Because some nutrients are involved in the synthesis of peptides and neurotransmitters that control food intake, decreased intake of these vitamins and minerals may interfere with signaling pathways involving appetite. Additionally, suboptimal micronutrient intake could result in signaling to the brain's centers to increase food intake so that the body's needs for these nutrients might be met.

"These results strengthen the plausible role for vitamins and minerals in the control of appetite and ultimately energy intake," the authors write.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

"All animal products contain substances called prions... They also are the substances that cause CJD, or mad cow disease." Prions are proteins that appear to do something proteins aren't supposed to do: they cause disease - primarily neurological diseases in animals. Humans can be infected with diseased prions by eating meat from an infected animal. This is a controversial topic because some scientists believe there may be a link between prions and Alzheimer's, while other scientists aren't convinced that a protein could actually prompt any type of disease.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Strange shape, strange names but great taste!

A couple of weeks ago I covered the sister to this fruit! Today is the original thing!

This strange pear/ball/grapefruit shaped thing is not a fruit I’ve eaten for years. It’s very new to our household but very tasty and healthy. I found out that this particular fruit carries names like; pomelo = pummelo = Chinese grapefruit = shaddock!  Pronunciation: PUHM-uh-low  - The French name for this fruit is chadec.  The current Malayan names are limau abong, limau betawi, limau bali, limau besar, limau bol, limau jambua, Bali lemon, and pomelo. The names throughout the world is extensive and too many to put here but if you are interested in all of them Click Here

I'll call it a Pummelo as that is what the name on the box says... Pummelo is the largest of the citrus fruits with a shape that can be fairly round or slightly pointed at one end similar to a pear - the fruit ranges from nearly round to oblate or pear-shaped. They range from cantaloupe-size to as large as a 25-pound watermelon and have very thick, soft rind. The one I bought was sort of pear shaped and about 10 inches across... It is known in the western world mainly as the principal ancestor of the grapefruit The pummelo is popular in the Asia and is new to California but rarely seen in the Eastern United States.

It's sweeter than a grapefruit. The skin is greenish yellow and slightly bumpy with the feel of citrus skin; flesh color ranges from pink to rose.

The pulp is milder and sweeter than its closest cousin, the grapefruit. Pummelos are available mid-January through mid-February from California. Can be used in the same manner as any other citrus fruit.

Said to be native to southeastern Asia and all of Malaysia; It is said to grow wild on river banks in the Fiji and Friendly Islands. It is said to have been introduced into China around 100 B.C. It is much cultivated in southern China - Kwang-tung, Kwangsi and Fukien Provinces - and especially in southern Thailand on the banks to the Tha Chine River; also in Taiwan and southernmost Japan, southern India, Malaya, Indonesia, New Guinea and Tahiti.

The pummelo is also called shaddock after an English sea captain, Captain Shaddock, who introduced the seed to the West Indies in the 17th Century from the Malay Archipelago. The seeds produced fruit somewhat smaller than the current grapefruit, more like an orange. The size of the fruit and the fact that it grew in bunches or clusters like grapes prompted a 19th century naturalist to liken the new fruit to grapes, with which it has no botanical relationship whatsoever.

Some say the grapefruit is a cross between an orange and the pummelo (or shaddock), while others believe that grapefruit is a natural mutant (sometimes referred to as a small shaddock) derived from the seeds Captain Shaddock brought to the West Indies.

Pummelo skin is also used medicinally in some cultures. For instance, in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, decoctions of the leaves, flowers, and rind are given for their sedative effect in cases of epilepsy, chorea and convulsive coughing. The hot leaf decoction is applied on swellings and ulcers. The fruit juice is taken as a febrifuge. The seeds are employed against coughs, dyspepsia and lumbago. Gum that exudes from declining trees is collected and taken as a cough remedy in Brazil.

As for the nutrients in a Pummelo? There are many as with other citrus and used extensively for medicinal uses in the Asian countries...

I prefer mine raw as it is very tasty, just slightly sweeter than a grapefruit with a very similar taste. I shall be eating many more of them but I have been unable to find out the exact nutrients but I suspect they are very near to most citrus fruits in nutrient content….

It is well worth it!

Lena

Who Fed the Results To The News Media?

Not hard to determine as you read on!

A team of researchers led by National Cancer Institute (NCI) epidemiologist Dr. Michal Freedman published an article suggesting that vitamin D is highly successful in reducing deaths from cancers of the colon and rectum. The researchers studied 16,818 people who had joined a nationwide U.S. government health survey between 1988 and 1994. The volunteers were then followed through the year 2000, by which time 536 had died of cancer. The study found that people with relatively high blood levels of vitamin D when they entered the study had a 72 percent reduction in their risk of dying of colorectal cancer compared to those with lower levels of vitamin D.

Yet the news media reported:
"Vitamin D May Not Reduce Cancer Deaths" (AP)
"Vitamin D May Not Lower Risk of Cancer Deaths" (Fox)
"Vitamin D Is Not Magic Bullet for Cancer" (Wired News)
"Vitamin D Won't Help Prevent Most Cancers" (HealthDay)
"Vitamin D Doesn't Prevent Cancer Deaths" (Windsor Star)
"Vitamin D Benefit At Issue" (Ft. Worth Star)
"No Connection Found Between Vitamin D and Overall Cancer Deaths" (Medical News Today)
"Vitamin D Doesn't Reduce Cancer Risk" (Nutraingredients.com)
"Vitamin D Does Not Reduce Overall Cancer Mortality" (ANI India News)
"Vitamin D Has No Effect on Overall Cancer Death Rate" (Medical News Today, 2nd article)
"Study Raises Questions About Vitamin D and Cancer" (KWWL Iowa)
"Vitamin D Downgrade As Scientists Advise There is No Real Proof It Fights Cancer" (Daily Mail)

How about these odds?

The American Cancer Society anticipates that in 2007 a total of 52,180 Americans will die of colorectal cancer, representing approximately 10 percent of all cancer deaths (Cancer Facts and Figures 2007). If you prevented 72 percent of these deaths you would save 37,570 lives each year. To comprehend this graphically, the seating capacity of Fenway Park in Boston is 38,805. Thus, you could nearly fill this stadium to capacity with the people whose deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided each and every year. Worldwide, the United Nations estimates that there are 500,000 deaths from colorectal cancer each year (W.H.O. World Cancer Report 2003). A 72 percent reduction would mean 360,000 lives saved each year. That's a lot of lives saved and a lot of misery avoided!

Yet what oncologist is prescribing daily sunlight or Vitamin D supplementing??? That would be zero!!! Nobody told them the truth about the study!

As Usual it takes those who have been damaged for life or lost their life to make a difference in those to follow.

Fosamax Users Seek Class-Action Status
Dec 1, 2007
By LARRY NEUMEISTER

NEW YORK (AP) - Lawyers for Fosamax users who believe their jaws were damaged by the osteoporosis drug on Friday asked a federal judge to order Merck & Co. (MRK) (MRK) to provide a dental monitoring program for the drug's users.

The lawyers made the suggestion to U.S. District Judge John F. Keenan as they argued for the case to be certified as a class-action, in order to pursue claims by users who believe the drug caused osteonecrosis of the jaw, a condition in which portions of the jaw bone die, sometimes leaving the bone exposed.

Timothy M. O'Brien, a lawyer for plaintiffs, said hundreds of thousands of patients would benefit from a dental monitoring program that would include regular dental screenings, X-rays and lab tests, all aimed at preventing the need for dental surgery.

Paul Strain, a Merck attorney, called Fosamax a "life altering and life saving drug" that helps to prevent the kind of bone fractures that can hasten the deaths of people as they age. He said the drug was a pioneer 11 years ago.

Strain also said there was no proven link between degeneration of the jaw bone in some patients and Fosamax.

Damage to the jaw bone can result in many ways, including from using steroids, from diseases or weaknesses in the body and from poor dental hygiene.

O'Brien said as many as one in every 296 patients who use Fosamax develop the severe damage to the jaw, though Merck disputed the figure. O'Brien said jaws were more susceptible to damage because they are used so frequently and are under greater stress than most bones.

Keenan did not immediately rule after hearing arguments.

Vance Andrus, another lawyer for the plaintiffs, argued a class-action certification would allow for a trial where a jury could decide whether Fosamax is toxic and hazardous and whether Merck was negligent and should have warned users of dangers.

Saving Rainforests A Thorny Issue At Bali Talks
by David Fogarty
December 6, 2007

NUSA DUA - Protecting tropical rainforests, which soak up vast amounts of greenhouse gases, is proving a real headache at UN-led climate talks in Bali, where delegates are trying to sort out a pay-and-preserve scheme.

Scientists say deforestation in the tropics is responsible for about 20 percent of all man-made carbon dioxide emissions blamed for global warming. Halting the destruction, or at least curbing the clearing and burning of remaining tropical forests, is widely regarded as a crucial part of any new climate pact.

Under a scheme called Reduced Emissions from Deforestation in Developing Countries (REDD), developing nations could earn billions of dollars through carbon trading by simply leaving forests such as in the Amazon and Congo basins.

"I do think we will see deforestation in the agenda for the future (negotiations). The focus here is pilot projects and more methodological work," said Yvo de Boer, head of the UN Climate Change Secretariat.

"It's clearly one of the issues that a number of countries want to introduce," he told Reuters.

Curbing deforestation has become a top issue for the thousands of delegates at Bali because the Kyoto Protocol does not include schemes that reward developing nations to preserve tropical rainforests.

The United Nations hopes the two-week conference will agree to include a REDD scheme in negotiations to work out a broader climate pact by 2009 to replace or expand the Kyoto Protocol, whose first phase ends in 2012.

The problem, though, is finding a scheme that fits all developing nations, said Hans Verolme of conservation group WWF.

"My instinct is there will be an agreement on a phased approach where we will start with some countries that are more ready than others," said Verolme, director of the WWF's Global Climate Change Programme.

Nations also needed to sort out the type of compensation scheme, such as a market-based carbon scheme, a fund-based scheme or a blend.

CASH FOR FORESTS

To help nations prepare, the Bali meeting is expected to launch a series of pilot projects, which have not been finalised.

At its simplest, the idea is to issue carbon credits to qualifying developing nations and rich nations buy these credits to offset their emissions at home.

It's a system that commoditises forests and rewards poor nations for keeping forests that might otherwise be cleared for their hardwood or to create vast plantations for biofuels or timber to feed ever-growing global demand for pulp and paper.

"Right now there are no standards for these credits," said Verolme, adding it was crucial to ensure any new forest credits did not flood Europe's carbon market.

Delegates are still sorting out how to monitor the world's remaining rainforests, how to ensure a halt in logging in one area or country doesn't shift the problem elsewhere, how to work out the amount of carbon that can be saved from a particular forest and the historical rate of deforestation.

But by far the biggest issue is compliance.

"The most difficult thing is how to ensure that within the institutions and governance of some of these countries that things are going to truly happen and that in the long run those things will not be undone," said Pep Canadell, executive officer of the Global Carbon Project.

He said total emissions from deforestation over the past 7 years from Southeast Asia had risen while those from the Amazon basin, described at the lungs of the earth, had fallen.

Indonesia, which is losing vast areas of forest every year, is keen to earn money from saving what's left and some provinces have already taken a headstart by signing agreements with international carbon investment companies.

The government also plans to launch studies measuring emission cuts from deforestation and distributing the benefits from a possible financing scheme to forest-dependent communities.

A Brazilian delegate told the Bali conference her government did not believe in market-based mechanisms to limit deforestation unless rich nations agreed to make major emissions cuts at home.

Canadell, from Australia's state-backed research body CSIRO, said rich nations needed to curb their appetite for tropical timbers.

"Despite our efforts and developing standards and global markets that are conscious of, and aware of, destroying the tropics, the developed world has continued buying tropical timber from non-sustainable sources," he said.
