In June 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a whooping cough booster shot for adolescents and adults ages 11 to 64.

Children have been receiving whooping cough vaccines since the 1940s, yet whooping cough, or pertussis, has been on the rise for the past 20 years, with cases rising from 11,647 in 2003 to 18,957 in 2004. While very dangerous to young children, this bacterial infection is far less severe and dangerous in older children and adults with healthy immune system function and it is readily treated with antibiotics. Additionally, like so many vaccines, the pertussis vaccine has long been the subject of controversy due to possible complications, such as potential autoimmune dysfunction and neurological damage.

Small Number May React to Smallpox Vaccine

ATLANTA (AP) - Smallpox shots may have triggered a painful heart inflammation in a very small number of emergency workers vaccinated after Sept. 11, researchers say.

A study in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association showed a higher rate of heart inflammation cases than ever documented before in people who got smallpox vaccinations.

"I think that was completely not anticipated," said Dr. Inger Damon, an author of the study.

Overall, however, the vaccine appears to carry an extremely small risk of serious side effects, researchers reported after looking at nearly 700,000 civilians and soldiers who received vaccinations after Sept. 11.

The United States ended routine childhood vaccination against smallpox in 1971, and the World Health Organization reported the disease was eradicated in 1980. But about 15 months after the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. government ordered certain military personnel vaccinated and recommended shots for front-line health care workers.

The smallpox vaccine, Dryvax, made by Wyeth Laboratories, has long been suspected of triggering neurological complications, including encephalitis, in rare cases. But Dryvax was not associated with heart problems until 2003, when three adults died suddenly of heart attacks. As a precaution, health officials advised people with heart disease to skip the vaccination.

One of the studies published Wednesday looked at emergency responders, a group made up largely of female health-care workers ages 40 to 64.

Researchers counted 100 possible cases of serious side effects in 37,901 people who got the shots from January to October 2003. Among the 100 were 21 cases of non-fatal heart inflammation and six heart attacks, two of which were fatal.

Researchers said they cannot tell if the heart attacks were caused by the vaccine. They said the number of heart attacks was not out of line with what would be expected in a patient population of that size and age range.

But the rates of inflammation were higher than those seen in previous studies. Further research may help determine whether these cases were triggered by the vaccine, said Damon, chief of the poxvirus program at the Atlanta-based federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The patients with heart inflammation suffered such symptoms as shortness of breath and chest pain, and some were hospitalized.

Health officials continue to advise patients with heart disease to skip the vaccination.

In a second study in the journal, researchers looked at neurological problems in 665,000 people vaccinated through the Pentagon and the Health and Human Services Department. Three cases of encephalitis were reported - a number that would be expected in any group of that size.

"If widespread vaccination ends up being warranted for some reason, we can be somewhat reassured," said Dr. James Sejvar of the CDC, lead author of the second study.

Strange shape, strange names but great taste!

I just tried this strange sort of pear shape, sort of a ball shape and sort of a grapefruit shaped thing last year just because it would make for less toxins in my body as it has a thick skin making it less likely to be full of pesticide chemicals. The name was strange food? MANY… I found out that it carries names like; pomelo = pummelo = Chinese grapefruit = shaddock! Pronunciation: PUHM-uh-low - The French name for this fruit is chadec. The current Malayan names are limau abong, limau betawi, limau bali, limau besar, limau bol, limau jambua, Bali lemon, and pomelo.

I'll call it a Pummelo as that is what the name on the box says... Pummel is the largest of the citrus fruits with a shape that can be fairly round or slightly pointed at one end -the fruit ranges from nearly round to oblate or pear-shaped. They range from cantaloupe-size to as large as a 25-pound watermelon and have very thick, soft rind. The one I bought was sort of pear shaped and about 10 inches across... It is known in the western world mainly as the principal ancestor of the grapefruit The pummelo is popular in the Asia and is new to California but rarely seen in the Eastern United States.

It's sweeter than a grapefruit. The skin is greenish yellow and slightly bumpy with the feel of citrus skin; flesh color ranges from pink to rose.

The pulp is milder and sweeter than its closest cousin, the grapefruit. Pummelos are available mid-January through mid-February from California. Can be used in the same manner as any other citrus fruit.

Said to be native to southeastern Asia and all of Malaysia; It is said to grow wild on river banks in the Fiji and Friendly Islands. It is said to have been introduced into China around 100 B.C. It is much cultivated in southern China - Kwang-tung, Kwangsi and Fukien Provinces - and especially in southern Thailand on the banks to the Tha Chine River; also in Taiwan and southernmost Japan, southern India, Malaya, Indonesia, New Guinea and Tahiti.

The pummelo is also called shaddock after an English sea captain, Captain Shaddock, who introduced the seed to the West Indies in the 17th Century from the Malay Archipelago. The seeds produced fruit somewhat smaller than the current grapefruit, more like an orange. The size of the fruit and the fact that it grew in bunches or clusters like grapes prompted a 19th century naturalist to liken the new fruit to grapes, with which it has no botanical relationship whatsoever.

Some say the grapefruit is a cross between an orange and the pummelo (or shaddock), while others believe that grapefruit is a natural mutant (sometimes referred to as a small shaddock) derived from the seeds Captain Shaddock brought to the West Indies.

Pummelo skin is also used medicinally in some cultures. For instance, in Southeast Asia raw pummelo skin pieces are given to patients to eat who are having problems with excessive coughing and who have a history of epileptic seizures.

As for the nutrients in a Pummelo? Guess it's a mystery as I couldn't find anything written on the nutrients in one. I am assuming since it's citrus it has lot of phytonutrients but exactly which ones is a guess... Since it is used as a medicine in Asia I suspect they are all good!

I prefer mine raw as it is very tasty, just slightly sweeter than a grapefruit with a very similar taste. I shall be eating many more of them but I have been unable to find out the exact nutrients but I suspect they are very near to most citrus fruits in nutrient content….

It is well worth it!

Heavy antibiotic use may raise lymphoma risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Using antibiotics more than 10 times in childhood increases the likelihood of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), a cancer that affects the body's lymphatic system, new research suggests.

Dr. Ellen T. Chang of the Northern California Cancer Centre in Fremont and her colleagues also found a marginally increased NHL risk among heavy users of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), but no association between the disease and any other types of medication.

Given the rising incidence of NHL, Chang and her team note in the American Journal of Epidemiology, a number of studies have investigated whether certain medications increase the risk of the disease. But results have been inconclusive, with only strong immunosuppressive drugs consistently being tied to NHL. Because a number of medical conditions also may be associated with NHL, they add, the question of whether the drug or the underlying condition is involved has complicated matters further.

To investigate, the researchers looked at data from the Scandinavian Lymphoma Etiology study, which included 3,055 patients with NHL who were compared with 3187 healthy subjects drawn from Danish and Swedish population registers.

The "striking" association between antibiotic use and NHL was seen for all subtypes of the disease. High NSAID use increased overall risk of NHL and of diffuse large B-cell NHL, but did not increase the likelihood of any other type of NHL.

The increasing use of antibiotics in the 20th century could explain the rise in NHL cases, if the drugs are in fact responsible for the association observed, Chang and her colleagues note. However, they add, their study was unable to determine if antibiotics and NSAIDs affected risk apart from the underlying inflammation, infections or susceptibility to infection.

"Biologic data more strongly support the hypothesis that antibiotic use is an indicator of infection and consequent inflammation, which may increase the risk of NHL, and that high cumulative NSAID use is a marker of chronic inflammation," they conclude.
