AN OUTRAGEOUS HOAX

In one of the most brazen examples of hucksterism that I have ever encountered in the cancer field, a new Web site, www.cancercure.org, has announced what it calls a startlingly effective new treatment for cancer. This purportedly non-toxic cure is said to work on all major cancers, such as breast, lung, prostate, colon, skin, liver, blood (leukemia), kidney, pancreas, and brain cancer, including the most advanced cases of metastatic disease. Pain relief is said to start immediately and a total cure is generally achieved within six weeks, or your money is cheerfully refunded. Supposedly, more than 10,000 people have already been cured and rendered cancer free by this treatment.

This "clinically proven" medicine is said to work in over 95 percent of those patients for whom conventional radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy have been ineffective. It is said to have absolutely no adverse effects of any kind and absolutely no interference or negative effects when taken with other medications. What is more, its benefits are recommended not just by numerous patients but by "leading cancer research physicians." If you surf the Internet in search of effective cancer treatments, you have probably heard these sorts of outrageous claims before. But rarely have they been so brazen. What is being described, after all, is one of humanity's fundamental wishes ? a truly effective, non-toxic treatment for advanced cancer. Promising such results is the hallmark of a charlatan.

But what really caught my eye was something else. For the promoters of this site have found an angle that is truly Machiavellian in its breathtaking audacity. They claim that the "cure" in question is not a secret potion or a mixture of exotic herbs but is in fact an FDA-approved anticancer medication called Camptosar (also known as irinotecan or CPT-11). In their own literature, they have renamed Camptosar "Cancer Control." They have then given this newly rechristened "Camptosar" a new list of ingredients as well as an imaginary set of properties.

And, in another twist, instead of damning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its uncooperativeness, the way most such hucksterish Web sites do, they present their products as fully FDA approved. Their most audacious touch, diabolical in its cleverness, is to direct readers to a phony but official-looking FDA Web site, at which the government agency seemingly approves of their totally imaginary product!

What makes this so dangerously plausible, even to wary cancer patients, is that there really is an anticancer drug by the name of Camptosar. In June 1996, the FDA gave the major pharmaceutical company Pharmacia & Upjohn accelerated approval to market this bona fide drug for the treatment of patients with metastatic carcinoma of the colon or rectum whose disease has recurred or progressed following standard 5-FU-based therapy. (The indications for its use were extended to other stages of colorectal cancer in 1998 and 2000.)

Cancer Control Is Not Camptosar

Because of this clever sleight-of-hand, an unwary reader could be forgiven for believing that Camptosar had indeed been renamed and was now being marketed over-the-counter by Flu Fighters, the Boca Raton-based company that owns the www.cancercure.org Web site. But Camptosar's name has never been changed to "Cancer Control," as this Web site audaciously claims.

Amid a veritable blizzard of falsehoods and half-truths, one thing is certain. Whatever these folks are actually selling, it bears no relationship to the real chemotherapy drug Camptosar. Apart from anything else, Camptosar is not dramatically effective in treating advanced disease. In one recent clinical trial, German scientists added Camptosar to an infusion of the standard drugs 5-FU plus folinic acid in the treatment of colorectal cancer. The median "progression free survival" (PFS) time was 8.5 months with the three-drug combination, compared to 6.4 months when Camptosar was not give, for a gain of about two months. The median overall survival time was increased from 16.9 to 20.1 months. So Camptosar seems to add a few months to survival in this situation (Kohne 2005). Worthwhile, possibly; but definitely not a dramatic cure for colorectal or any other kind of cancer.

The cancercure.org Web site further states: "Adverse events associated with the use of Camptosar/Cancer Control may include hyperactivity in some very rare instances; gastritis, mild cases reported in rare instances." This is ludicrously untrue. In fact, Camptosar is potentially a highly toxic drug. It is particularly notorious for inducing diarrhea so severe as to become life threatening, through dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and sepsis (systemic infection). Camptosar may also cause rhinitis, increased salivation, flushing, cramping, and other distressing effects. Severe suppression of the immune system is also common.

So the thought of Camptosar being sold as an over-the-counter agent via the Internet is both preposterous and frightening. The reality is that Camptosar must be administered under the supervision of a doctor who is familiar with cancer chemotherapy, preferably a medical oncologist. Camptosar is an injectable solution that must be made up to order using a special polyethylene glycol diluent. (The solution must be prepared in a glass syringe because it corrodes plastic.) By contrast, this pseudo-Camptosar, "Cancer Cure," is taken as a tablet and sold in standard plastic screw-top bottles. So there is little chance that these two products are related, except in the fevered imaginations of the people who created this Web site.

Stringy Green Medicine! Not Green Beans!

Over the months I've been writing about foods and how it affects our life I've found some so ordinary and some exotic and foreign to many but this one is mostly standard in most homes and as I cut the pieces into my soup pot I started wondering exactly what this green stringy veggie did for me. What I learned was very interesting...

An amazing discover to me was that it was first used as a Medicine as lots of our common foods today were and I found out that there is more than just the green stalks we find in the grocery store here.

That medicine food is Celery (Apium graveolens) that grows to a height

of 12 to 16 inches and is composed of leaf-topped stalks arranged in a conical shape that are joined at a common bottom base. It is a biennial vegetable plant that belongs to the Umbelliferae family whose other members include carrots, fennel, parsley and dill. While most people associate celery with its prized stalks, the leaves, roots and seeds can also be used as a food and seasoning as well as a natural medicinal remedy.

Celery is believed to be the same plant as selinon, mentioned in Homer's Odyssey about 850 B.C. Our word "celery" comes from the French celeri, which is derived from the ancient Greek word. The old Roman names, as well as those in many modern languages, are derived from the same root word and sound remarkably similar. This indicates a rather recent wide distribution and use of celery.

The oldest record of the word celeri is in a 9th-century poem written in France or Italy, giving the medicinal uses and merits of the plant. When its culture in gardens was begun in the 16th century in Italy and northern Europe, it was still a primitive plant, like smallage, and was used for medicinal purposes only.

In France in 1623 use of celery as food was first recorded. For about a hundred years thereafter its food use was confined to flavorings or medicinal. In France and Italy, by the middle of the 17th century, the little stalks and leaves were sometimes eaten with an oil dressing.

In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, in Italy, France, and England, was seen the first evidences of improvement of the wild type. Gardeners also found that much of the too-strong flavor could be eliminated, making the stalks better for salad use, by growing the plants in late summer and fall, then keeping them into the winter.

By the mid-18th century in Sweden, the wealthier families were enjoying the wintertime luxury of celery that had been stored in cellars. From that time on, its use as we know it today spread rapidly. Its seed was brought to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the 1850s from Scotland, and it became a commercial crop there, grown by Dutch settlers.

All through the 19th century in America, England, and much of Europe, it was believed necessary to blanch the green edible portion of celery to rid it of unpleasantly strong flavor and green color. This was done by banking the plants with soil. Some kinds, like Pascal and Utah, that remain green when ready for eating, are now considered to be of the finest quality.

Many so-called "easy-blanching" or "self-blanching" varieties have appeared in the past 50 years. Generally, these self-blanching sorts are inferior in quality to the best green varieties, but can be grown successfully under less favorable conditions of soil and climate.

Celeriac, or turnip-rooted celery, is a kind that forms a greatly enlarged, solid, more or less globular body just below the soil surface. It is not used raw, but is especially suited for use in soups and stews.

Today research has proven celery seed to be a diuretic. Diuretic substances are used to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Research has also shown that celery seed helps decrease blood sugar levels and might be useful in treating diabetes. Modern herbalists believe celery seed aids digestion, increases appetite and may also alleviate the discomforts of rheumatism.

Celery and celery seed have long been thought to be a fairly good aphrodisiac. Research has shown that celery contains androsterone so there may be something to that belief.

Celery can be a great diet aid as digesting celery requires more energy than celery and only 17 calories in a 100 gram portion.

Healthy minerals and vitamins found in celery are; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium,Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium, Vitamins C, A, B-6, E, B-12, ascorbic acid, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Retinol and Pantothenic acid. Making healthy, if you get organic uncooked. Some elements are lost in cooking. Light green celery stalks with a glossy surface tend to taste best. (Dark green stalks have slightly more nutrients, but are apt to be stringy.)

Sadly on 94 percent of the non-organic celery tested were found to contain Chemicals and Pesticides; three most commonly found were Dicloran, Acephate, and Oxamyl and also one or more of the following; Acephate, Azinphos methyl, Captan, Carbaryl, Chlorothalonil, DCPA, DDT, Diazinon, Dicloran, Dimethoate, Disulfoton, Endosulfans, Iprodione, Linuron, Malathion, Methamidophos, Methidathion, Methomyl, Mevinphos Total, Oxamyl, Oxydemeton methyl, Parathion ethyl, Permethrin Total, Phosmet, Piperonyl butoxide, Prometryn, Propiconazole, Quintozene (PCNB), and Trifluralin

I use celery in all my soups in salads but my favorite way of eating celery is raw and sometimes stuffed with peanut butter or cream cheese. Makes a healthy filling snack or side dish.

Enjoy your green string of health but make sure it's organic to prevent pesticide and chemical toxic buildup in your organs.

The Real Sleep Story!

Our good health relies on so many smart health habits, but one of the most important is sleep!

In this, and most holiday, seasons lack of sleep increases rampantly with the hurry, hurry of shopping, parties, working and life in general. Those habits contribute to the decline of the immune system break down, opening us up to the next germ or virus that comes through the air to grab you. Sleep deprivation also sets us up for heart disease and ultimately an early death.

Okay, so one or two sleepless nights will not make a big difference nor will it result in severe problems. But it could still result in your death or the death of an innocent unknown person. According to highway accident investigators, the lack of sleep in individuals is resulting in more than 100,000 car accidents a year!

Guns don't even kill that many but people are fighting to outlaw them, so think before driving after not getting a good nights rest! Loss of sleep results in a foggy memory, slows reaction time and falters concentration as well as lowering your immune system's ability to react when needed. Not to mention that too little sleep creates the inability to tolerate others, otherwise known as a short temper.

In a study out of the Medical College of Wisconsin, headed by Carol Everson, the study found some very disturbing information about sleep! She found that rats deprived of sleep over a three-week period resulted in intestinal bacteria spreading into the blood stream and organs of the body making the rats ill! That can also result in death in human beings or rats!

According to studies done at UCLA, the deep sleep stage is where our blood pressure falls, the heart rate slows and blood vessels relax making it easier for blood to flow through our body giving our heart a much needed rest. As soon as we fall asleep the hormones that regulate the sympathetic nervous system start to diminish. But in sleep deprived people, Catecholamine levels actually climb, raising blood pressure making the heart work harder than normal. This setting a sleep deprived person up for very serious consequences in the end.

The basic amount of sleep needed in an individual is seven to nine hours of sleep. You may think you are getting enough sleep, but are you?

Having fibromyalgia for more than 30 years has necessitated me using a sleep aid nightly, as fibromyalgia creates the inability to get an unbroken nights sleep. First the doctors gave me the drug amitriptyline that started out with 25mg at bedtime and over the years graduated up to the extreme dose of 150mg. Yes, it made me sleep through the night but this regimen created morning grogginess, still awoke with pain, and required several hours of wearing off to become myself each morning. I left that nightly regimen in 1995 for an herbal compound that does not leave me drowsy, sleepy or change me and absent pain.
