Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
My thoughts and prayers are for those people caught in the ice and
weather that stranded so many without heat or electricity. My family in
Oklahoma was caught in that situation this week but survived with
life... And all the winter weather hitting or missing around our valley
here, snow, rain, hail, sleet and sunshine and all in one day, yet
nothing compared to the midwestern and eastern part of the states, I
wonder if you are doing a hit or miss in supplementing the necessities
for your good health? Don't waste your life by hoping you will stay
healthy yet do nothing to assure it! Enjoy your weekend and be sure to
take your day of rest for your body requires it!

Something To Think About
============================
Does depression contribute to
bone loss?
Take nearly 90 women (all premenopausal, under the age of 46) who have
major depressive disorder (MDD), and about 45 women of the same age who
don't suffer from depression. Use a special x-ray technique to assess
their bone density.
Results: Compared to subjects who aren't depressed, the depressed
subjects have significantly greater thinning of the bone in the femoral
neck (the section of the femur that's most vulnerable to fracture), and
depressed subjects have a significantly higher incidence of low bone
mass in the lower back and lumbar spine.
The conclusion is obvious, of course: Low bone mineral density is more
prevalent in premenopausal women with MDD, so depression may be a risk
factor for osteoporosis, right along with smoking and calcium
deficiency.
Before we go on, can you spot what's wrong with this picture? It's easy
– just follow the money.
Safe to say, a large majority of patients diagnosed with MDD end up
taking antidepressants for extended periods.
In the study described above (funded by the National Institutes of
Health and published last month in Archives of Internal Medicine), all
of the MDD subjects were taking antidepressants. So does it seem more
likely that their bone loss was prompted by depression, or prompted by
antidepressant drugs?
In the Product Prescribing Information for Prozac, a list of "events"
observed in clinical trials notes that osteoporosis was one of the side
effects. It's considered a rare side effect, but still, there it is. The
Prozac web site also notes that the drug impaired bone development in
early animal studies.
And yet, most of the reports about this study would like us to believe
that antidepressant drugs had no effect at all on subjects' bone health.
Ivanhoe Newswire: "Although the depressed women were on anti-depressant
medication, the study indicated that was not a factor in increased bone
loss."
Science Daily: "A previous study suggested that older adults taking
antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors had more
bone fractures than others. However, the current study showed that these
medications were not linked to low bone mass in premenopausal women."
How did the current study show no link? Science Daily doesn't open that
can of worms.
Things start to get humorous with this from MedPage Today: "…the
investigators noted that the usefulness of antidepressants for bone
mineral loss in major depression should be evaluated."
At first I thought I'd read that incorrectly, but then I came across
this howler from HealthDay News: "It's not clear what role
antidepressants might play, but by relieving the depression, the drugs
may also help bone mineral density, the researchers said."
Riiiight. So what are we looking at here? Is the NIH kindly laying the
groundwork for drug companies to sell osteoporosis drugs to depressed
patients and antidepressant drugs to osteoporosis patients? That's a
sweet win-win…provided you're not one of the patients.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
"It is
not commonly known that in the
absence of minerals,
vitamins have no function. Lacking vitamins, our system can make use of
the minerals, but lacking minerals, the vitamin is useless." The human
body can manufacture some vitamins, (B in the intestinal tract, D from
sunshine) but the body cannot manufacture its own minerals - they must
be supplied by food and water. When in adequate amounts, they make a
strong healthy mind and body. When they are lacking, disease sets in...

Colon Cancer has
over 50% Fatality Rate
There are a staggering 363,000 new case of
colorectal cancer every year, with an estimated 945,000
globally. More sobering is the fact that
492,000 deaths occur from this
cancer each year, over 50% fatality rate.
But just last week, some giant news
surfaced that revealed that humble Green Tea can stop colon
cancer in its tracks. (There are some important
provisions to this, so read on to learn the full facts.)
The study, published in the journal
“Carcinogenesis” just last week, came to the conclusion that
we now have a means of treating and preventing colon cancer
with staggering success potential.
Dr. Ala Issa from the University of South Carolina, who
headed the research study said,
“Our results suggest that Green Tea specifically targets
initial stages of colon carcinogenesis; the time of
administration of green tea is pivotal for effective
chemoprevention.”
The results add to an ever-growing body of science linking
consumption of Green Tea to a wide
range of health benefits, including lower risk of cancer,
increased weight loss, improved heart health and protection
against Alzheimer’s.
The researchers under Dr. Issa reported that the consumption
of Green Tea in solution significantly inhibited the
formation of any new tumors in the colon, but had no effect
against larger tumors.
Dr. Issa and collaborators from the Medical University of
South Carolina and the University of Columbia, used “ApcMin”
mice as a model for colon cancer, and treated the animals
with azoxymethane, a chemical that selectively induces
cancer in the colon.
At the age of eight weeks, the mice were divided into two
groups – one to receive either water or a green tea solution
as the only beverage source for a further four to eight
weeks.
The researchers report that consumption of the green tea
solution “significantly inhibited” the formation of new
tumors in the colon. A mechanistic study indicated that
Green Tea decreased the total levels of the early
carcinogenesis biomarker beta-catenin and its downstream
target in the colon.
The tea seems to actually
“cancer-proof” the colon. To fight larger, existing tumors
will need a highly concentrated extract of Green Tea and its
active catechins.

Get Moving to Reduce Your Stroke Risk
(Ivanhoe Newswire) ? Can you climb stairs? Or kneel down and get
back up? Or even lift your groceries? These are things that could lower your
stroke risk, according to new research. The study finds that people who have
good physical function after the age of 40 can lower their risk of stroke by 50
percent.
Researchers in the United Kingdom examined more than 13,000 men and women over a
four year period. The participants ranged in age from 40 to 79 and had not had a
stroke, heart attack or cancer. Participants completed a survey on how well they
were able to climb stairs, carry groceries, kneel, bend and lift. Researchers
followed up with the participants until 2005.
Study authors say those that scored the best on the physical function test had a
50 percent lower risk of stroke than those that had the lowest scores. This
remained after taking into consideration other stroke risks such as body mass
index, cholesterol and smoking. The study also found for every increase of 10
points on the test, men had a reduced risk of stroke by 19 percent and women had
a 29 percent lower stroke risk.
This study is important because it reveals that people with poor physical
function may represent a high risk population for stroke. Study authors also say
the inability to do these functions could indicate underlying health issues
which can lead to vascular disease.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Christmas Fruit
This fruit will make it's
appearance in more homes than usual this month. Kind of traditional
fruit... So many people think of fruit as a holiday fare and do not
bother to include it in their daily diets. A mistake! This fruit will be
popular in another week in most homes that don’t see it as more than a
holiday fruit…
That might just be because they are coming into harvest or it has been
passed down from generation to generation as the fruit to put in every
child's stocking. Whatever the reason that the orange occupy’s a place
of honor for this time of the year that orange ball is healthy,
nutritious and a very enjoyable food.
An orange is more effective than dark-green, leafy vegetables in
increasing serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene. Not to say
green leafy vegetables should not be in the daily diet, quite the
opposite!
Various varieties of oranges exist around the world.
Most varieties of the orange has a sweet with a slightly sour taste and
is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. The
outer-most layer of the rind is called orange zest, and it has a similar
flavor with a bitter tang to the inner part of the orange. The rind is
very high in nutrients and can be used in cooking, cleaning or eating.
When the oil is removed from the orange rind it is a very effective
non-toxic cleaning and polishing agent. Orange oil is used as a wood
treatment for preserving and naturally beautifying it.
One naval orange provides 130% of your daily Vitamin C. This powerful
antioxidant protects the body from the effects of stress, pollution and
disease. Unlike some vitamins, Vitamin C cannot be stored by the body,
so it must be replenished regularly. Oranges supply 80 fat-free calories
packed with energizing carbohydrates that fuel energy levels.
Oranges supply Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate as well as fiber and
many other vitamins and minerals that bolster the immune system and
contribute to overall health, which is especially important during cold
and flu season.
One orange or grapefruit contains 1gram of protein and the mineral zinc,
among other nutrients, both bolster the immune system and helps to fight
off the negative effects of stress and ward off illness and diseases.
The fruit originated in India or Vietnam, depending on who you listen
to. It was called na rangi in Sanskrit. The na rangi or naranja was
translated as "norange", and in English usage a norange was back-formed
into the more acceptable “orange”. The same thing happened in French and
Italian, but in Spanish it is still naranja.
A number of varieties of orange are now cultivated in many parts of the
world, usually in warmer climates. The sweet navel orange - Citrus
aurantium - was first grown in Spain, and has become the most popular
variety. The sweet orange will grow to different sizes and colors due to
local conditions, most commonly with ten slices inside.
The Valencia or Murcia orange is one of the sweet oranges used for
juice. It is a late-season fruit and is the most popular orange when the
navel oranges are out of season.
The blood orange has streaks of red in the fruit, and when squeezed the
juice is often reddish. The blood orange, with it's sweet, deep red
colored flesh, is thought to be the result of a mutation that occurred
in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp
and skin is slightly sweet, and not bitter.
The mandarin is similar, but smaller and sweeter. The mandarin orange is
considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. It is
most abundantly grown in Japan, southern China, India, Mexico and the
East Indies, and is esteemed for home consumption in Australia. Mandarin
is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel, which have
been dubbed "kid-glove" oranges. These are treated as members of a
distinct species, Citrus reticulata Blanco. The name "tangerine" could
be applied as an alternate name to the whole group, but, in the trade,
is usually confined to the types with red-orange skin. In the
Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita. Spanish-speaking
people in the American tropics call them mandarina. There are a
multitude of different named Mandarin oranges.
My grandchildren's favorite breakfast is Orange French Toast;
Ingredients;
3 free-range organic eggs beaten
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup soy or rice milk
1 Tablespoon melted Butter or virgin olive oil
6-8 Whole wheat bread slices
1) Beat first six ingredients together in bowl until well mixed.
2) Heat griddle.
3) Dip bread slices in mixture coating both sides.
4) Cook on butter/oil coated or non-stick griddle until lightly browned.
If you like your French toast slightly sweeter lightly sprinkle with
powdered sugar. For a more cinnamon taste sprinkle with sugar and ground
cinnamon before serving. (I keep a salt shaker with cinnamon/granulated
sugar mixture on hand for this purpose. 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon to 1/4 cup
sugar.)
Serve hot with fruit or syrup of choice. (Our favorite is with sliced
peaches or sliced strawberries)
An apple a day keeps the doctor away but so does an orange a day!
Build a healthy immune system!

1 Million
Doses of Hib Vaccine Recalled
No Illnesses Reported From Recalled Merck
Hib Vaccine
By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News
Dec. 12, 2007 -- The CDC and FDA today announced the recall of a
million doses of children's Haemophilus influenzae type b
vaccine (Hib vaccine) due to concerns of sterility of the
product.
No health problems have been reported, and no tainted vaccines
have been found, says CDC Director Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH.
"Right now, this is not a health-threatening situation for
children," Gerberding said at a news conference this afternoon.
"We have had no cases of reported injury or adverse events with
the Hib vaccine involved in this recall."
Advice for Parents
The recalled vaccines, made by the drug company Merck, are fully
potent. Children who received the vaccines don't need to be
revaccinated.
The concern is that the vaccine may be contaminated with
bacteria, said Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the CDC's
immunization center.
"No product has been found to have bacteria in it, but it is
theoretically possible something slipped through," Schuchat said
at the news conference.
Children who recently received the Hib vaccine may show symptoms
at the injection site. Things to look for include local skin
bumps or abscesses. Any problems would appear within a few days;
after a week, problems are unlikely, says Schuchat.
Should symptoms appear, parents should contact a doctor.
About the Hib Vaccine
Every year, 14 million doses of the Hib vaccine are given in the
U.S.
The Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (Hib vaccine) prevents
serious bacterial infections, including:
Meningitis, an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal
cord
Pneumonia, a lung infection
The CDC recommends the Hib vaccine for all children under 5
years old in the U.S., with doses starting when children are 2
months old. So far, no changes have been made to these
recommendations.
The Hib vaccine isn't related to the flu vaccine.
The CDC also recommends the Hib vaccine for some older children
or adults with special health conditions including sickle cell
disease, HIV/AIDS, spleen removal, bone marrow transplant, or
cancer treatment with certain drugs.
Hib Vaccine Recall
The Hib vaccine recall involves 12 lots of PedvaxHIB and COMVAX.
"These lots of PedvaxHIB and COMVAX are being recalled due to
lack of assurance of product sterility," states the FDA's recall
notice.
All of the recalled vaccines are made by Merck. Hib vaccines
made by other companies aren't being recalled.
A Merck spokesperson wasn't immediately available for comment.
With additional reporting by Daniel J. DeNoon.
LENA'S COMMENT: Sadly these notices of recall are all too
frequent these days and too many people hurt from them... I can
tell you that side effects of vaccines are not reported to any
agency or FDA. I can say this as I was nurse and worked with 9 pediatricians for 3.5 years and we
never reported immunization side effects to any agency. All that's required to be reported
are communicable diseases such as; AIDS, STD's etc. not vaccine
reactions.... So to say no harm was done is inaccurate as they
do not know as doctors are so busy trying to see patients and
keep up the quota required by insurance companies that they don't take time
as it isn't required
of them!!!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
WWF Says
Warming Puts Amazon at Risk
Dec 6, 2007
By MICHAEL CASEY
BALI, Indonesia (AP) - The impact of climate change plus
deforestation could wipe out or severely damage nearly 60
percent of the Amazon forest by 2030 - making it impossible to
keep global temperatures from reaching catastrophic levels, an
environmental group said Thursday.
Several recent studies have suggested similar findings, but
scientists say the size and complexity of the Amazon leaves many
questions about the rain forest's future open to debate.
Brazil's Environment Ministry did not respond this week to a
request for comment.
"The importance of the Amazon forest for the globe's climate
cannot be underplayed," said Daniel Nepstad, author of a new
report by the World Wide Fund For Nature released at the U.N.
climate change conference in Bali.
"It's not only essential for cooling the world's temperature,
but also such a large source of fresh water that it may be
enough to influence some of the great ocean currents, and on top
of that, it's a massive store of carbon."
Sprawling over 1.6 million square miles, the Amazon covers
nearly 60 percent of Brazil. Largely unexplored, it contains
one-fifth of the world's fresh water and about 30 percent of the
world's plant and animal species - many still undiscovered.
Large swaths of forest like the Amazon are also valuable "carbon
sinks," or absorbers of carbon dioxide. Deforestation pours
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and at the same time kills
off carbon-absorbing vegetation.
The WWF said logging, livestock expansion and worsening drought
are projected to rise in the coming years and could result in
the clearing of 55 percent of the rain forest. If rainfall
declines by 10 percent in the Amazon, as predicted, an
additional 4 percent could be wiped out.
Scientists say if global temperatures rise more than 3.6 degrees
above preindustrial levels, the risks to the environment and to
people will be enormous. It is essentially the 'tipping point'
for catastrophic floods and droughts, rising sea levels and heat
wave deaths and diseases.
"It will be very difficult to keep the temperatures at 3.6
degrees if we don't conserve the Amazon," said Nepstad, who is
also a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Research Center in
Massachusetts.
According to the WWF, deforestation in the Amazon could result
in 55.5 billion to 96.9 billion tons of carbon dioxide being
released into the environment by 2030, representing as much as
two years of global carbon emissions.
Earl Saxon, a climate change expert with the World Conservation
Union, said the report was consistent with "all the best
science" on the issue and recognizes there are "opportunities
the delegation in Bali can take to protect the Amazon basin."
However, Milton Nogueira, a Brazilian government consultant on
climate change who is also part of his country's Bali
delegation, said such predictions on the Amazon's future should
be taken lightly given its "size and complexity."
"It is such a big, complex system that no one can predict what
will happen," he said. "It is like you are looking at a blond
and blue-eyed boy and saying he will be an Olympic champion."
In its report, the WWF said saving the Amazon requires a shift
to sustainable logging practices, implementation of land use
polices that are already on the books in the country, and
provision of money to developing countries including Brazil to
reduce deforestation.
"We can still stop the destruction of the Amazon, but we need
the support of the rich countries," said Karen Suassuna, a
climate change analyst with WWF-Brazil. "Our success in
protecting the Amazon depends on how fast rich countries reduce
their climate-damaging emissions to slow down global warming."
