Smoking 'Lowers IQ And Raises the Risk of Dementia'

SMOKING can lower your IQ and increases the risk of dementia later in life, experts warned yesterday.

They say long-term smokers suffer significant damage to their memory and their ability to think quickly and solve problems.

Researchers warn that this may lead to difficulties in simple everyday tasks such as counting change and may hasten the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Experts from Aberdeen and Edinburgh universities say the study offers the first conclusive evidence that cigarettes are bad for your intelligence as well as your physical health.

They believe that toxic chemicals in smoke get into the bloodstream and harm the blood vessels that provide the brain with vital oxygen supplies.

"Our findings are significant because they show for the first time the long-term effect of smoking on cognitive ability," said Dr John Starr, of Edinburgh University. "The impact of smoking on the IQ of the people involved may appear small, but it will impair their quality of life."

"They will experience niggly problems with any task that requires some sort of mental agility whether that's organising their daily life, remembering what to buy at the shops, doing crossword puzzles or playing bridge.' In the study, detailed in New Scientist magazine today, researchers looked at 465 individuals, all of whom were born in 1936 and had taken part in the same IQ survey at the age of 11."

The team asked these people, around half of whom were former or current smokers, to take a series of five tests designed to measure their mental functioning and IQ between 2000 and 2002 when they were aged 64 on average.

After taking into account other factors which may influence their intelligence, such as education and alcohol consumption, the results showed that smokers tended to fare worse than non-smokers.

Professor Lawrence Whalley, of Aberdeen University, said that the smokers who had been smoking for around 40 years on average had experienced IQ reductions of around 2 per cent as a result of their habit.

Further analysis showed that when the effect of smoking on lung function was taken into account, the negative effect on IQ was around 4 per cent.

Scientists have previously shown that damaged lung function is associated with impaired mental ability, possibly because the brain is being fed less oxygen.

Professor Whalley said former smokers most of whom had smoked for around ten years early in adulthood also had slightly lower scores than nonsmokers.

He said the findings contradict the belief of some smokers that a nicotine rush can actually help boost their brain power.

He added: "Smokers are likely to be functioning at 2 per cent lower than if they had not smoked. This becomes critical if you think of the decline you see in dementia if you are starting from a lower point then it may come on earlier."

Strange shape, strange names but great taste!

As I rolled the huge pear/ball/grapefruit shaped thing in my hand debating whether I should try it or not? I decided it would be worth the risk as it had a thick skin making it less likely to be full of pesticide chemicals. The name was strange and one I didn't recognize. On investigation I found out that it carries several names; pomelo = pummelo = Chinese grapefruit = shaddock! Pronunciation: PUHM-uh-low - The French name for this fruit is chadec. The current Malayan names are limau abong, limau betawi, limau bali, limau besar, limau bol, limau jambua, Bali lemon, and pomelo.

I'll call it a Pummelo as that is what the name on the box said... Pummelo is the largest of the citrus fruits with a shape that can be fairly round or slightly pointed at one end -the fruit ranges from nearly round to oblate or pear-shaped. They range from cantaloupe-size to as large as a 25-pound watermelon and have very thick, soft rind. The one I bought was sort of pear shaped and about 10 inches across... It is known in the western world mainly as the principal ancestor of the grapefruit The pummelo is popular in the Asia and is new to California but rarely seen in the Eastern United States.

It's sweeter than a grapefruit. The skin is greenish yellow and slightly bumpy with the feel of citrus skin; flesh color ranges from pink to rose.

The pulp is milder and sweeter than its closest cousin, the grapefruit. Pummelos are available mid-January through mid-February from California. Can be used in the same manner as any other citrus fruit.

Said to be native to southeastern Asia and all of Malaysia; It is said to grow wild on river banks in the Fiji and Friendly Islands. It is said to have been introduced into China around 100 B.C. It is much cultivated in southern China - Kwang-tung, Kwangsi and Fukien Provinces - and especially in southern Thailand on the banks to the Tha Chine River; also in Taiwan and southernmost Japan, southern India, Malaya, Indonesia, New Guinea and Tahiti.

The pomelo is also called shaddock after an English sea captain, Captain Shaddock, who introduced the seed to the West Indies in the 17th Century from the Malay Archipelago. The seeds produced fruit somewhat smaller than the current grapefruit, more like an orange. The size of the fruit and the fact that it grew in bunches or clusters like grapes prompted a 19th century naturalist to liken the new fruit to grapes, with which it has no botanical relationship whatsoever.

Some say the grapefruit is a cross between an orange and the pummelo (or shaddock), while others believe that grapefruit is a natural mutant (sometimes referred to as a small shaddock) derived from the seeds Captain Shaddock brought to the West Indies.

Pummelo skin is also used medicinally in some cultures. For instance, in Southeast Asia raw pummelo skin pieces are given to patients to eat who are having problems with excessive coughing and who have a history of epileptic seizures.

As for the nutrients in a Pummel? Guess it's a mystery as I couldn't find anything written on the nutrients in one. I am assuming since it's citrus it has lot of phytonutrients but exactly which ones is a guess... Since it is used as a medicine in Asia I suspect they are all good!

I ate mine raw and was very good and tasty, just slightly sweeter than a grapefruit with a very similar taste. I shall be eating more, even if I don't know exactly what nutrients are in one.

The Experiment in food was well worth it!

Lead, Arsenic in Imported Herbal Remedies - US Study

CHICAGO - More than a dozen "Ayurvedic" herbal remedies imported from India and Pakistan were found to contain harmful levels of the heavy metals mercury, lead and arsenic, US researchers said on Tuesday.

"Although the prevalence of heavy-metal-containing Ayurvedic herbal medicine products use is unknown, the number of individuals at potential risk is substantial," said Robert Saper, who did the study while at Harvard Medical School, and is now at Boston University.
Saper purchased 70 traditional Ayurvedic remedies at Boston-area South Asian grocery stores touted as cures for ills ranging from child colic to urinary tract infections and found 14 contained potentially toxic levels of mercury, lead and arsenic.

The report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, urged consumers of these products to get screened for heavy metal poisoning. It also renewed the American Medical Association's call for closer governmental monitoring of herbal remedies.

A few Ayurvedic products legally manufactured in India and Pakistan are herbs deliberately "cooked" with metals such as mercury, but any such product would be banned in the United States, said Michael McGuffin of the American Herbal Products Association, who was asked to respond to the journal article by Ayurvedic education groups.

"Mercury is an ingredient in traditional Ayurvedic formulas. They might be comfortable with it, my association is not," he said.

The tainted products purchased by the researchers would not be widely available, and customers were likely immigrants and others familiar with them, he said.

Ayurvedic products made in the United States and sold in many health food stores are free of such toxins, McGuffin said. Like most herbal remedies, they are benign and usually less powerful than prescription drugs, which he said do need close monitoring by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Based in philosophical theories propounded in India thousands of years ago, the Ayurvedic medical system encompasses a range of treatments and lifestyle measures said to prevent disease by balancing "principles" at work in the body.
