This is the season of excesses and people enter their doctor's office complaining of increased pain. Their eating habits never entered their head as the pain culprit! Is your diet helping or hurting your pain?

According to researchers at Johns Hopkins, "There's no denying that there is a strong connection between what you eat and how you feel, and the difference is likely to become more and more apparent the older you get." (Johns Hopkins Health, www.intelihealth.org )

Stunning breakthroughs in medical research demonstrate that you can literally feed your aching bones and joints exactly what they need to move more freely and with less discomfort. Taking certain nutrients to eliminate discomfort, rebuilding deteriorating joint structures, and restore freedom of movement is rapidly moving into mainstream medical consciousness. In fact the doctors at Johns Hopkins have developed a "bone/joint diet! That they believe can help alleviate the burden of stiff, inflamed and painful joints. Dr. Wayne Garland formulated the exact supplements!

Although denied by the medical profession for the last three decades, diet does influence your pain... Prior to the denial phase of medicine it was and in some circles still a known factor that certain foods and drinks trigger certain problems. For instance, Joint problems have been found to be exacerbated by the use of alcohol, liver and other organ meats making up lunch meats. The most famous joint problem recognized is "Gout." Johns Hopkins researchers also targeted allergies or intolerance for dairy products, preservatives found in a wide variety of foods and drugs along with members of the nightshade family as possible culprits for joint problems. In addition, eating or drinking anything tainted with Salmonella or other bacteria has been shown to provoke the immune system to attack the joints, a condition known as "Reiter's syndrome."

Those same researchers say that you should experiment with different foods to ascertain which ones will help you and which ones will cause you pain. With over 100 different kinds of bone/joint problems classified under the heading of "arthritis" it is easy to understand why experimenting with different foods must be left up to you. Also as explained by the Johns Hopkins papers, "The more pressure and weight on your joints, the more they will hurt. Even and extra 10 pounds stresses the joints." A desirable reason to lose weight when plagued with joint/bone problems!

A Diet to Promote Joint Comfort from  John Hopkins Health 2000

·        BREAKFAST: One piece or serving of fresh fruit; one slice of bread or bowl of cereal; one protein, such as an egg or a cup of yogurt.
 
·        LUNCH: A fresh salad with vegetable, such as mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes, radishes, celery and low-fat dressing; a four-ounce serving of protein, such as fish, chicken, turkey, tofu or beans; one bread serving; a piece of fruit.
 
·        AFTERNOON SNACK: One fruit or raw vegetable; one serving of bread; a glass of low-fat milk or a cup of low-fat yogurt.
 
·         DINNER: A four-ounce serving of protein, such as fish, tofu, chicken, beans, turkey or beef; one carbohydrate, such as a baked potato, rice, bread or pasta; one cup of  steamed vegetables (avoid starches like peas or corn); a fresh salad with low-fat dressing.
 
·         EVENING SNACK: A fruit with one graham cracker square, one low-fat cookie, or a half cup of sorbet or low-fat frozen yogurt.

Combining a healthful diet and stress reduction pain can all but be eliminated in most instances...

5 Rare Tips for Maximizing Fat Loss

Drink Lemon Water with Meals - The acid from lemon slows stomach emptying and digestion.   Consuming a full squeezed lemon in 20 ounces of purified water with a meal can lower blood sugar as much as 30%.  By controlling blood sugar, the body can better rebound from the post meal insulin spike and begin burning fat sooner.

Psyllium Husk ? Like acid from lemons, the fiber known as psyllium husk also slows stomach emptying and digestion.  Consuming a tablespoon in water before a meal will prevent a spike in insulin and blood sugar.  Post meal fat burning will begin sooner.

Drug Induced Obesity - Commonly used prescription drugs can interrupt many weight regulating factors.  When used long term (6 months or more), these drugs elicit obesity among most users and will negate the benefits of all fat loss endeavors.  This is true despite rigorous workout or diet routines that may be employed. 

The most common of these drugs are those used for birth control, to treat high blood pressure (beta blockers such as Atenolol), depression (SSRI's such as Zyprexa), and diabetes (sulfonylureas such as Amaryl and thiazolidinediones such as Avandia). 

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) ? The nutrient ALCAR prevents fat storage.  It is responsible for enhancing energy output by transporting fat to the mitochondria.  The mitochondria is the powerhouse or engine of the cell and responsible for converting fatty acids to energy in the form of heat and ATP.  Without this transportation, fatty acids are simply stored as fat. 

Limit Alcohol Consumption? Alcohol is processed just like sugar. The body will burn alcohol before it burns fat.  Most any amount is detrimental to your fat loss goals. 

If consumed, alcohol should be limited to no more than 3 drinks per week (a drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits or 4 ounces of wine).  To curtail the negative effects of alcohol consume it with a meal consisting of protein and fat.   This will slow the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream and prevent its negative impact on weight gain due to insulin and blood glucose levels.

The Christmas Fruit 

This time next week this fruit will make it's appearance in more homes than usual. Kind of traditional fruit...

It might just be because they are coming into harvest or it has been passed down from generation to generation as the fruit to put in every child's stocking. Whatever the reason that they occupy a place of honor for this time of the year that orange ball is healthy, nutritious and a very enjoyable food.

An orange is more effective than dark-green, leafy vegetables in increasing serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene.

There are various kinds of oranges.

The orange has a sweet with a slightly sour taste and is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. The outer-most layer of the rind is called orange zest, and it has a similar flavor with a bitter tang to the inner part of the orange. The rind is very high in nutrients and can be used in cooking, cleaning or eating. When the oil is removed from the orange rind it is a very effective non-toxic cleaning and polishing agent. Orange oil is used as a wood treatment for preserving and naturally beautifying it.

One naval orange provides 130% of your daily Vitamin C. This powerful antioxidant protects the body from the effects of stress, pollution and disease. Unlike some vitamins, Vitamin C cannot be stored by the body, so it must be replenished regularly. Oranges supply 80 fat-free calories packed with energizing carbohydrates that fuel energy levels.

Oranges supply Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate as well as fiber and many other vitamins and minerals that bolster the immune system and contribute to overall health, which is especially important during cold and flu season.

One serving of an orange or a grapefruit contains 1g of protein and the mineral zinc, which can bolster the immune system and help fight off the negative effects of stress and help ward off illness and diseases.

The fruit originated in India or Vietnam, depending on who you listen to. It was called na rangi in Sanskrit. The na rangi or naranja was translated as "norange", and in English usage a norange was back-formed into the more acceptable an orange. The same thing happened in French and Italian, but in Spanish it is still naranja.

A number of varieties of orange are now cultivated in many parts of the world, usually in warmer climates. The sweet navel orange - Citrus aurantium - was first grown in Spain, and has become the most popular variety. The sweet orange will grow to different sizes and colors due to local conditions, most commonly with ten slices inside.
 

The Valencia or Murcia orange is one of the sweet oranges used for juice. It is a late-season fruit and is the most popular orange when the navel oranges are out of season.


The blood orange has streaks of red in the fruit, and when squeezed the juice is often reddish. The blood orange, with it's sweet, deep red colored flesh, is thought to be the result of a mutation that occurred in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp and skin is slightly sweet, and not bitter.

The mandarin is similar, but smaller and sweeter. The mandarin orange is considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. It is most abundantly grown in Japan, southern China, India, Mexico and the East Indies, and is esteemed for home consumption in Australia. Mandarin is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel, which have been dubbed "kid-glove" oranges. These are treated as members of a distinct species, Citrus reticulata Blanco. The name "tangerine" could be applied as an alternate name to the whole group, but, in the trade, is usually confined to the types with red-orange skin. In the Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita. Spanish-speaking people in the American tropics call them mandarina. There are a multitude of different named Mandarin oranges.

My grandchildren's favorite breakfast is

Orange French Toast;

Ingredients;
3 eggs beaten
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4  teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup soy milk
1 Tablespoon melted Butter
6-8 Whole wheat bread slices
 
1) Beat first six ingredients together in bowl until well mixed.
2) Heat griddle.
3) Dip bread slices in mixture coating both sides.

4) Cook on butter coated or non-stick griddle until lightly browned. If you like your French toast slightly sweeter lightly sprinkle with powdered sugar. For a more cinnamon taste sprinkle with sugar and ground cinnamon before serving. (I keep a salt shaker with cinnamon/granulated sugar mixture on hand for this purpose. 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon to 1/4 cup sugar.)
 
Serve hot with fruit or syrup of choice. (Our favorite is with sliced peach or sliced strawberries)

Tylenol Most Common Cause of Liver Failure

Acetaminophen poisoning is now the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Attempted suicides account for many cases, but almost half are the result of unintentional overdose.

Unintentional Overdose Worse Than Intentional

Some 36 percent of Americans take acetaminophen at least once a month, making it the most widely used pain reliever in the United States. Taking more than the recommended dose, however, can lead to fatal liver injury.

And those who had unintentionally taken overdoses usually have even worse outcomes than those who has done so intentionally, since unintentional overdoses are usually not recognized as such immediately.

Cases Nearly Doubled Over Five Years

Researchers examined the case histories of almost 700 liver-failure patients over a six-year period. They found that:

Cases of acute liver failure blamed on acetaminophen use rose sharply from 28 percent in 1998 to 51 percent five years later.
More patients overdosed unintentionally on acetaminophen (48 percent) than did so intentionally (44 percent) Sixty-three percent who accidentally overdosed used a prescription acetaminophen compound while 38 percent had been taking two acetaminophen meds at the same time. Some patients had been taking less than 4 grams of acetaminophen daily before their livers failed. As Little as 7.5 Grams Per Day

The data suggests that consistent use of as little as 7.5 grams of acetaminophen a day may be hazardous. Rather than resulting in chronic illness, acetaminophen injury has a threshold of safety that, when exceeded, can have immediate and devastating results.

Marine Census Shows Diversity, Declines

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A massive census of all the fish and other marine life in the world's oceans has reached the halfway point with new evidence of the rich diversity under the sea along with warnings about the alarming decline of many species.

The 10-year international project that began in 2000 already has tracked the migration of tuna from Japan to California and back, along with the movement of endangered British Columbia salmon with implanted computer chips.

"We're sending animals out with the equivalent of cell phones and they're telling us where they are," said Ron O'Dor, senior scientist for the Census of Marine Life.

"What those animals are sending back is a picture that shows what seems like a blue uniform ocean to us on the surface is really very complicated," O'Dor said.

The data from the tracking program could help researchers and fishery managers conserve stocks of many species of large fish that have declined by about 90 percent over the last 50 years, O'Dor said.

"This gives us an idea about where fish go, the rate at which they migrate, and tells us where these animals live and where they die so we can understand quantitatively what happens to fish stocks so we can manage them better," he said.

Dave Fluharty, a marine policy analyst at the University of Washington, said the data likely will change international treaties on fishing rights as researchers find out how fish are distributed in the ocean.

"It's going to be easier to detect international violations, and I think that's going to change a lot of what we do over the next 10 to 20 years," Fluharty said.

Jane Lubchenco, an Oregon State University marine biologist and president of the International Council for Science, said the census will help raise awareness about the urgent need for international cooperation to preserve marine life.
 
"I think there's definitely increasing recognition that we can no longer think about the ocean as infinitely vast, infinitely bountiful and infinitely resilient," Lubchenco said. "There are problems everywhere."

But she said she was encouraged by the amount of biological diversity the census has found in the first five years.

"The expectation was there would be new discoveries," Lubchenco said. "What's blown us away is how much there is out there that we didn't know about before. It's big stuff, it's little tiny stuff that's been coming in from this project. It's been pretty sobering."

Other highlights at the midway point of the census include the discovery of tiny carnivorous sponges found in the Southern Ocean abyss, an underwater dead zone at the epicenter of the 2004 tsunami and the first life recorded at smoking seafloor vents south of the equator in the Atlantic.

The census also is studying polar regions and the deepest reaches of the oceans. Scientists recently used the German icebreaker Polarstern to tow an underwater sled over the Southern Ocean floor near Antarctica to photograph life at the bottom.

"The old way was to drop a bucket and maybe collect one sea cucumber," O'Dor said. "But when you tow the photo sled you could see the sea cucumbers for miles and miles across the bottom."

But O'Dor noted the cost of such research is very expensive, estimated at more than a dollar per second to operate the Polarstern.

As a result, many scientists in the census are turning to private industry to share ocean data, including the oil industry.

Drilling crews are moving farther out along the continental shelves across the world, and much of the information they obtained was simply filed away and forgotten once the right site was found. But that data is a gold mine for researchers, O'Dor said.

"This is billions of dollars worth of sampling because the oil companies have more equipment and ship time than all the scientists in the world," O'Dor said. "If we can work with them it gives us a way of making progress."
