Something To Think About
============================
Heart attack risk
can be lowered by about 80 percent by doing three things!
Late last year,
the international team of investigators that conducted the ten-year
INTERHEART research finished a new analysis of their data, gathered from
more than 27,000 participants among several major ethnic groups in 52
countries. More than 12,400 of these subjects had suffered acute heart
attacks. The other subjects - included as controls - were in good
health. Incidence of heart attack was assessed in relation to subjects'
body mass index (BMI - an estimate of total body fat based on weight and
height) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR - a comparison of the circumference
of the waist to the circumference of the hips).
Results showed a slight association between high BMI and heart attack
risk. But for waist-to-hip ratio the results were much more dramatic.
When subjects were grouped from lowest WHR to highest, the risk of heart
attack steadily rose as well. Subjects with the greatest WHR were found
to be at two and a half times greater risk compared to subjects with the
smallest WHR.
Needless to say, a slender hip circumference isn't the problem here;
it's all about the abdominal fat. And heart attack risk is only one part
of the problem. In the e-Alert "Extra Baggage" (5/18/05), I told you
about a 23-year study that showed how excessive abdominal fat raises the
risk of factors associated with metabolic syndrome, such as type 2
diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
When the INTERHEART researchers first reported their study, they noted
that the relative risk for heart attack can be lowered by about 80
percent by doing three things: getting regular exercise, eating plenty
of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding smoking.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
A group of researchers published a report in the British Medical Journal
that might offer a clue. They suggested that a sense of direction might
be associated with the pineal gland, the gland that produces melatonin.
The researchers studied 760 patients, of whom 394 showed calcium
deposits in their pineal glands. They rated the subjects' sense of
direction on a scale of 1 to 10.
The subjects who didn't have calcium deposits had an average score of
7.6, while people with calcium deposits couldn't score better than an
average of 3.7.
To prove their point, the researchers tried the same study with homing
pigeons. Pigeons with normal glands found their way home with no
trouble. Those with calcium in their pineal glands got lost.

Report: Eli Lilly Said to
Play Down Risk
Dec 17, 2006
NEW YORK (AP) - Eli Lilly and Co. (LLY) has downplayed for about 10 years the
risks associated with Zyprexa, which treats schizophrenia, The New York Times
said on its Web site Sunday, citing internal documents from the drug maker and
e-mail messages of its managers.
The documents, obtained from a lawyer for mentally ill patients, show Lilly
executives kept data from doctors about the drug's tendencies to promote obesity
and boost blood sugar, the newspaper said.
Zyprexa is Lilly's best-selling product. With sales of $4.2 billion last year,
about 2 million people worldwide were taking the drug.
Thirty percent of patients taking Zyprexa gain 22 pounds or more after a year on
the drug, and some patients have reported putting on more than 100 pounds,
according to information published by Lilly. But the internal documents, which
cover the period from 1995 to 2004, show Lilly feared sales would be hurt if the
company was open with doctors the drug's side effects, the paper said.
Lilly denied there was a connection between the drug and diabetes on Friday in a
written response to questions about the documents, according to The New York
Times. The drug maker said the documents had been taken out of context, the
newspaper said.

Does Eating Fat Create Weight Gain? True or False?
© By Lena Sanchez
What we do know for sure that no or low fat has been shown to be
detrimental to tour health. Of course your grocer's shelf
doesn't tell you that.
With the holidays upon us the problem is going to be overeating
of the bad fats. Bad fats being animal and hard vegetable/animal
combinations along with all the sugar your system can possibly
absorb. But this particular fad right now is the no fat low fat
diets. Yes it is a fad that's are out there and helping make
people ill rather than healthy, as you have been led to believe.
This premise has been propagated by the food industry that has
not idea what is healthy but everything about what it takes to
sell you on eating more then you should and certainly things
that are going to make them money!
Remember this! No fat in your diet or eating the majority of
no/low fat foods on the grocery shelves can make you ill! This
is not a well-publicized fact and the manufacturers of those
products would not like you to know that. Especially since it
directly impacts their livelihood! A bad thing with the no/low
fat foods on the shelves today is the overloading of sugars to
compensate and is making people ill. This form of eating does
not remove fat from the body, which is supposed to be the reason
for no fat diets.
A nurse friend worked at a Southern California hospital that
pride themselves in leading the way in being healthy and
enlisted a whole group of nurses and doctors, who worked there,
to go with a "no fat" diet. They carefully created a so-called
healthy "NO Fat" diet. Sorry to say after six months on the no
fat diet people began losing their hair, thyroids were going
berserk, their skin began to dry out and look dehydrated,
wrinkles occurred and some began picking up the patients
illnesses and the care taker became the patient and unable to
get over the illness. Nerves were shot and tensions began to be
a problem on each floor that had volunteered to do the no fat
diet. It didn't take them long to realize that fat is important
to our diets and a must for good health. Luckily when they
corrected the no fat diet and added plant based fat their health
returned and hopefully with no residual bad affects to show up
later.
A study out of Australia had fantastic results on a diet that
has been said to be bad fat by those who apparently really don't
know. People in the study who ate 1 1/2 avocados per day
lowered their cholesterol levels from an average of 236 to 217.
This study also proved the no/low fat diet is NOT the best
cholesterol lowering diet to follow. The study subjects were on
a three week low-fat diet before going on the avocado diet. The
result was an average decrease in cholesterol levels of only 4.9
percent on the low-fat diet compared to 8.2 percent on the
avocado diet. Another great avocado fact you should love is that
avocados preserved the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), but
on the low-fat diet these good HDL's went down 14%.
The main fat (monounsaturated) found in avocados is the same one
that we all recognize as being healthy found in olive oil.
True most of us get more fat than is necessary but the key to
any diet is moderation in ALL things! Good Fat also stabilizes
blood sugar and slows down food absorption so you feel full
longer.
It is important to distinguish between "bad fats" ? those that
typically come from four-legged animals; "good fats" - those
from fish, nuts, avocados and soybeans and integrate them into
your diet.
For the holidays we all will probably undergo a great "bad fat"
flux with all the cookies, candy, puddings, turkey, standing rib
roasts, ham, marshmallowed yams, etc.
Aim to make lunch your biggest meal, when you're more likely to
burn calories after eating. But don't skip breakfast to "save
up" for the holiday meal - that tactic usually leads to snacking
on sugary & fatty stuff instead. Try nibbling some almonds,
pumpkinseeds or low-fat cheese with fruit before hitting a
party. By depriving yourself you are setting up for a real
shocker after the holidays. Make a light supper/dinner your key
to not gaining all those holiday pounds.
Eat ALL things in Moderation!!!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT

American Chemical
Society Reveals Threats
By The Fitzgerald Report,
Dec 11, 2006
From: The Hundred Year Lie: How Food & Medicine Are Destroying
Your Health
Emerging contaminant threats to drinking water and the
environment have been identified in a series of 40 new science
studies.
A significant and unprecedented collection of science studies
has appeared in the American Chemical Society journal,
Environmental Science & Technology, which has devoted its entire
December issue to the "effects of emerging contaminants on
people and planet." This is a first step in providing a
comprehensive treatment of how synthetic chemicals are altering
life on the planet.
For those of you who have read THE HUNDRED YEAR LIE, many of the
40 studies and articles elaborate on trends and themes
identified in the book. For instance, the magazine supports the
book's contention that wastewater treatment and water
purification plants are releasing huge numbers of synthetic
chemicals into the environment and into our bodies with unknown
impacts on health.
The press release announcing the special issue described its
approach this way: " Not so long ago, the notion that particles
80,000 times thinner than a human hair could somehow
self-assemble and cause harmful effects in the water, air and
perhaps even cells seemed far-fetched. But today the quest to
understand nanoparticles and other emerging contaminants and
discover ways to cope with them is one of the hottest and most
critical areas in chemistry research."
Here is a summary of a few of the science studies that provide
evidence supporting key points in THE HUNDRED YEAR LIE:
--a study of North American rainwater at four northeastern U.S.
sites and two sites in southern Canada found significantly high
concentrations of PFOAs, which are used as stain resistant
coatings on paper, particularly fast food packaging. The main
source of this contamination seemed to be the urban corridor
between New York and Washington, D.C.
--carbon filters on water treatment plants often fail to remove
PFOAs and PFOSs, both types of perfluorinated surfactants found
in consumer products. Both the Moehre and Ruhr rivers in Germany
were found to be contaminated, apparently because food industry
sewage sludge had been spread on farm fields near the rivers.
Drinking water taken from these rivers had alarmingly high
levels of these chemicals.
--Flame retardants (PBDE's) in the bodies of North Americans are
10 times higher than anywhere else in the world. These
retardants are absorbed by fish and bioaccumulate up the food
chain into humans.
--Dozens of types of disinfectant chemical byproducts were
detected at 12 drinking water treatment plants, including 28
"new previously unidnetified disinfection byproducts."
--Two common 'complexing agents' called BT and TT, used in
dishwasher detergents and as anticorrosives, escape removal in
wastewater treatment plants and bioaccumulate in the
environment. A study of seven rivers in Switzerland found
concentrations of both contaminants. The health risks are
unknown.
--a study of surface waters in Germany and Switzerland found
certain types of barbiturates, whose production was halted
decades ago, still pollute the environment and resist breakdown.
--organic wastewater contaminants were identified and analyzed
from solid waste produced by wastewater treatment plants in
seven U.S. states. This waste was spread on farm fields. In any
one sample taken, up to 45 chemical contaminants were found out
of 87 that were being sought, which means the actual numbers of
chemical contaminants surviving wastewater treatment will be in
the hundreds if not thousands. Biosolids are "highly enriched"
with these contaminants, said the study authors, and the results
"demonstrate the need" to better determine the health risks,
since 50 percent of biosolids produced in the U.S. are spread on
lands, many of which support crops.
--an antibacterial chemical used in the swine industry called
CDX is being found in groundwater. This chemical survives
chlorine treatments in water purification plants. That means
drinking water contains this potential carcinogen.
--two chemical compounds used in cancer chemotherapy and the
treatment of autoimmune diseases were found to survive treated
wastewater processes and to persist in groundwater with unknown
toxic effects on aquatic life.
--wastewater from 30 onsite treatment systems in two Colorado
counties --Summit and Jefferson-- was analyzed for organic
wastewater contaminants. Of the 24 target chemical compounds, 88
percent were detected in the samples. Some compounds, such as
endocrine disrupting chemicals, disinfectants, antimicrobial
agents, and pharmaceuticals, were found in every sample with
unknown consequences for the environment or human health.
--aircraft deicer and anti-icer fluid runoff creates endocrine
disruption and toxicity in aquatic life, but scientists are
having difficulty studying the effects because trade secrecy
laws enable manufacturers to hide toxic chemical ingredients
from public view and as a result, "much of the toxicity is due
to unidentified additives," concluded the scientists involved in
this study.
