Something To Think About
============================
Since the launch of
Chantix, the side effect that's emerged as the most troubling is
"emotional disorder."
You've probably seen the new advertising campaign for
Chantix, the drug that reduces a smoker's desire for cigarettes. The ads
are based on the tortoise and the hare fable, and the metaphor is clear:
Chantix will help smokers knock out the craving ? all they need to do is
be like the tortoise and stay the course.
The Chantix print advertisement is so cute (with an adorable smile
photoshopped onto the tortoise's mug) that kids will probably ask their
parents if they can take Chantix.
My advice to those kids: Just say no.
Adults might want to consider that option as well.
Last month, the FDA issued a warning to healthcare professionals,
alerting them to "reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and
erratic behavior in patients who have taken Chantix." According to the
warning, many of these cases will experience "depressed mood, suicidal
ideation, and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks of
initiating Chantix treatment."
The warning also directs doctors to monitor patients taking Chantix for
behavior and mood changes, and cautions patients to be careful when
driving or using heavy machinery. And yet, in a three-page Chantix
advertisement that appears in an issue of a popular magazine published
this month, the caution about driving and using machinery is noted, but
there's no mention of behavioral changes, depression, or suicidal
ideation.
Chantix is sure to be a popular drug, so if you know any smokers who are
thinking of taking it, fill them in on this disturbing side effect they
might not be aware of.
Better yet, let them know there are safer techniques to help them put
down their cigarettes and never look back.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Dreams
can occur at any point of the sleep cycle, and even frequent bad dreams
don't indicate psychiatric or psychological problems. That applies to
children, who may have night terrors, as much as to adults. Just relax
and go back to sleep.
But if you have the same bad dream over and over, you might think about
getting professional help. It's one of the common symptoms of
post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the American Family
Physician.

Colon Cancer has
over 50% Fatality Rate
There are a staggering 363,000 new case of
colorectal cancer every year, with an estimated 945,000
globally. More sobering is the fact that
492,000 deaths occur from this
cancer each year, over 50% fatality rate.
But just last week, some giant news
surfaced that revealed that humble Green Tea can stop colon
cancer in its tracks. (There are some important
provisions to this, so read on to learn the full facts.)
The study, published in the journal
“Carcinogenesis” just last week, came to the conclusion that
we now have a means of treating and preventing colon cancer
with staggering success potential.
Dr. Ala Issa from the University of South Carolina, who
headed the research study said,
“Our results suggest that Green Tea specifically targets
initial stages of colon carcinogenesis; the time of
administration of green tea is pivotal for effective
chemoprevention.”
The results add to an ever-growing body of science linking
consumption of Green Tea to a wide
range of health benefits, including lower risk of cancer,
increased weight loss, improved heart health and protection
against Alzheimer’s.
The researchers under Dr. Issa reported that the consumption
of Green Tea in solution significantly inhibited the
formation of any new tumors in the colon, but had no effect
against larger tumors.
Dr. Issa and collaborators from the Medical University of
South Carolina and the University of Columbia, used “ApcMin”
mice as a model for colon cancer, and treated the animals
with azoxymethane, a chemical that selectively induces
cancer in the colon.
At the age of eight weeks, the mice were divided into two
groups – one to receive either water or a green tea solution
as the only beverage source for a further four to eight
weeks.
The researchers report that consumption of the green tea
solution “significantly inhibited” the formation of new
tumors in the colon. A mechanistic study indicated that
Green Tea decreased the total levels of the early
carcinogenesis biomarker beta-catenin and its downstream
target in the colon.
The tea seems to actually
“cancer-proof” the colon. To fight larger, existing tumors
will need a highly concentrated extract of Green Tea and its
active catechins.

Study: Timing of Pills Might Matter
Dec 17, 2007
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - Taking a blood pressure pill at bedtime instead of in the
morning might be healthier for some high-risk people.
New research suggests that simple switch may normalize patterns of blood
pressure in patients at extra risk from the twin epidemics of heart and kidney
disease.
Why? When it comes to blood pressure, you want to be a dipper. In healthy
people, blood pressure dips at night, by 10 to 20 percent. Scientists don't know
why, but suspect the drop gives arteries a little rest.
People with high blood pressure that doesn't dip at night - the non-dippers -
fare worse than other hypertension sufferers, developing more serious heart
disease. Moreover, heart and kidney disease fuel each other - and the 26 million
Americans with chronic kidney disease seem most prone to non-dipping. In
addition to heart problems, they're at extra risk of their kidney damage
worsening to the point of dialysis.
Most blood pressure patients need two or three medications. So Italian
researchers performed an easy test: They told 32 non-dippers with kidney disease
to switch one of those drugs from a morning to a bedtime dose. In two months,
nearly 90 percent of these high-risk patients had turned into dippers. Their
nighttime blood pressure dropped an average of 7 points, without side effects or
increase in daytime blood pressure.
Better, a key sign of kidney function improved significantly, too, Dr. Roberto
Minutolo of the Second University of Naples reports this month in the American
Journal of Kidney Diseases.
It's the latest research in the field of chronotherapy: How our bodies' internal
rhythms make certain diseases worse at certain times of the day, and in turn
affect how to time treatments.
While the Italian study is too small for proof, similar studies from Europe also
back a bedtime switch for non-dippers. The work is catching the attention of
U.S. hypertension specialists, and now doctors at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins
University are planning a larger study to see if a bedtime switch really could
give certain people healthier hearts and kidneys.
How big a problem is non-dipping?
"I think it's huge," says Hopkins' Dr. Lawrence Appel. "This is our best lead"
into why black Americans with kidney disease, in particular, tend to worsen
despite treatment.
Appel found 80 percent of black kidney patients in a recent study were
non-dippers. Most startling, 40 percent had nighttime blood pressure that was
even higher than daytime levels.
Two-thirds of chronic kidney disease patients, and at least 10 percent of the
general population, are estimated to be non-dippers, says Dr. Joseph Vassalotti
of the National Kidney Foundation. One theory is that their bodies have trouble
excreting salt.
Yet few patients have ever heard of the problem - and few doctors know who is
affected. Most people get their blood pressure checked only during the day. A
24-hour blood pressure monitor can tell but is rarely used, partly because
insurance seldom pays for the extra visit to download and diagnose the readings.
And most patients who take several once-a-day pills swallow them all in the
morning, meaning they all start wearing off around the same time, says Dr. Gina
Lundberg of St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.
"It does make good sense to take some in the morning and some in the evening,"
says Lundberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association.
Everyone has an internal clock, determined by genes, that affects health. Many
of these biological rhythms are circadian, meaning they fluctuate on a 24-hour
cycle.
Consider how that can affect the timing of treatments. Some older "statin" pills
fight cholesterol best if taken at bedtime; they target a liver enzyme that's
most active at night. Asthma attacks are more frequent at night, and the stomach
secretes more heartburn-causing acid at night, affecting some patients' dosing
requirements. Researchers even are studying how to better time certain cancer
chemotherapies and allergy treatments.
The best-known example: Blood pressure jumps in the early morning hours, as the
awakening body produces more stress hormones. That's also why heart attacks and
strokes are most common in the morning.
The nighttime dipping problem has gotten far less attention. The new Italian
study marks an important advance, says Dr. Mahboob Rahman of the University
Hospitals of Cleveland.
"We know now that you can change medication timing and lower blood pressure at
night," he explains.
That doesn't mean everyone should switch willy-nilly to bedtime dosing. Morning
may be best for people on just one drug, and no one yet knows if the switch
truly gives non-dippers better overall health. "That's the million-dollar
question," Rahman cautions.
Still, Lundberg says it's worth asking your doctor how to time doses, saying one
at night for someone taking multiple medicines couldn't hurt.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Teeny Tiny Seedy Nutrients!
Unlocking of the almost unlimited healing power of the
foods we eat every day is an uphill battle for those of us in the war
against disease. Fast food has so adulterated our eating that we no
longer look on foods with the same eye as times past. Today more and
more studies are showing the benefits of raw and healthy foods yet we
are not seeing enough of it in the mainstream media. And if you think
about it, the medical establishment has always known -- and accepted --
that bad foods can make you sick. Yet these "experts" are as slow as
molasses in accepting the flip side of the coin, namely, that GOOD foods
can make you well! Doctors almost never mention foods unless it in
relation to the cholesterol myth.
Educating people on good foods in relation to health is a real uphill
battle against all the processed and fast foods around. Listen and take
note that the old saying, "What you eat is what you are!" is very true!
These teeny tiny little seeds are great illnesses preventors and or
healers!
Even though berry season is past in most areas you can still find them
in stores both frozen and fresh. Berries are usually seed bearing and
those seeds are important to our health.
I keep packages of different kinds of frozen berries in my freezer for
my cobbler craving winter days. I grew up eating my grandmother's
fantastic berry cobblers and they still remain my favorite. Strawberries
make their way onto our table in the form of shortcake in strawberry
season and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to
fruit punch the rest of the year. Replacing sweets as treats year round.
Most kids love berries frozen whole to eat like candy and make for a
healthy body and strong teeth.
Berries, such as blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries,
strawberries and the likes, contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up
their mystic. These little berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants.
The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types.
Loaded with minerals and vitamins that are healthy for every body!
Blueberries tend to get all the attention these days but other berries
are just as nutritious, it's just that nobody has done a lot of berry
testing on the others so you don't find them written about as often. I
believe one thing that is truly the crux of berries is the tiny seeds
within the berry. Berries, most commonly, Blackberries have been used
for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe
they are very important in preventing problems.
Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new
life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of
life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA's, just as effective as
other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection
against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the
Intestinal system with disseminating the nutrients through out the body
as well as its ability to move along toxins before they can damage the
body, and the faster this happens the better for your health. Speedy
removal of toxins and dissemination of nutrients happen when the
intestines contain the proper amounts of probiotic bacteria and the
proper fiber is introduced, and these tiny little seeds move things
along swiftly.
EFA's and Your Health
Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha
linolenic and oleic acids. 1997 studies (Johansson et al) found
that these EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of 22 common edible wild
northern berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma
tocopherol as well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich
composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative
disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of
ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated
primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research
programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit
the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of
rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995). Red Raspberries have shown to have the
highest levels of ellagic acid but is of sufficient quantity in all tiny
seed bearing berries.
If you want to get hooked on cobblers here's my grandmother's recipe!
Grandma's Berry Cobbler
Set Oven to 375º
before you start process.
Pastry for 1 pie:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Whole wheat flour
½
teaspoon salt
½
stick butter at room temperature
¼
cup Virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons ice cold water
Yield: 6 - 8 servings
Berry Filling:
4 cups blackberries or berry of your choice with the exception of
strawberries?
1 1/4 cups sugar
4 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup water
1/4 stick butter
Prepare pastry: Put flour, salt, butter, and oil into a bowl and mix
with pastry mixer or with fork until shortening is the size of small
peas. Add ice water and mix to pastry consistency. Refrigerate while
preparing filling.
Wash and cap berries; drain. Combine berries, sugar, flour, and water,
and place ½
berry mixture in oven-proof 9" x 9" x 2" baking dish.
Roll out pastry on floured board and cut into 3/4" strips. Place small
side pieces of pastry into berry mixture add second half of berries.
Arrange rest of pastry strips on top of berries in a criss-cross fashion
and top with dots of butter or margarine, sprinkle lightly with sugar.
Bake at 375º
until crust is golden brown approx 45 to 50 minutes. Serve topping of
your choice.
Sadly food alone cannot make for good health as it would in centuries
past so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of
nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air
pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Read the Report

Hormone
boosts production, but marketers want farmers to drop it
December 16, 2007
By Daniel Malloy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The first letter from Dairy Marketing
Services arrived in August, containing what John Ligo saw as a
not-so-veiled threat.
Mr. Ligo, who has 200 milking cows on his farm here, has used
recombinant bovine somatotropin to increase his herd's milk
production since the hormone treatment entered the market in
1994.
It was safe. It was legal. It was profitable. It was not
controversial -- then.
Mr. Ligo, an intelligent and often blunt man, had quit his job
as a loan officer to take up dairy farming in 1990. He bought
the land from his father, also a dairy farmer, but not to embody
some quaint notion about tending the family plot.
"I knew I could make money," said Mr. Ligo, who graduated from
Penn State with a degree in agriculture business management.
And this letter, it seemed, threatened a practice that had
helped him build his 1,000-acre LiTerra Farm.
Dairy Marketing Service's customers, the letter said,
increasingly were requesting milk from cows not treated with
rbST. Kroger, the Cincinnati-based grocery chain, was one of the
first, and several more DMS clients followed suit -- including
Dean Foods, the largest dairy distributor in the country. Though
the letter stated DMS wouldn't "force" anyone to drop the use of
rbST, it suggested exactly that.
When Mr. Ligo followed up, a company representative confirmed
his suspicion -- DMS no longer would accept his milk unless he
signed an affidavit by Jan. 1 saying he'd stopped using rbST.
If Mr. Ligo chooses to hold out -- and he said last week he
still hadn't decided -- he has few options. Some smaller
marketers still will accept milk from cows treated with rbST,
but DMS, which serves more than 2,100 producers in the
Northeast, holds plenty of sway.
"DMS is the 800-pound gorilla," Mr. Ligo said. "They make the
rules and they go hard on people that don't play by the rules."
Pennsylvania's debate
Mr. Ligo's predicament is at the core of a fight brewing in
Harrisburg about rbST. In October, state Agriculture Secretary
Dennis Wolff announced that dairy products cannot contain
so-called "absence labeling," which includes claims that the
milk comes from cows not treated with rbST.
In other words, rbST-free producers would get no advantage in
the marketplace.
Initially meant to be enforced starting Jan. 1, the ruling was
met with harsh public backlash and has been delayed indefinitely
while under review by the governor's office, a process that will
take months.
Groups from across the country targeted Pennsylvania, the first
state to issue such a restriction, for infringing on the right
of consumers to know how their dairy products are produced.
And earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission rejected
requests by Monsanto, the St. Louis-based company that is the
sole manufacturer of the hormone, to ban rbST-free labels.
The complaints are indicative rbST-free production is on the
rise.
Safeway, Costco, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market, in
addition to Kroger, sell rbST-free products. These days,
consumers are more wary of how their food is produced and are
demanding rbST-free milk, paying an average of 25 percent more
for it.

Why
poisonous, unregulated chemicals end up in our blood
By Mark Schapiro
In the late 1990s, citizens of several European countries
learned from newspaper reports that their infants were
constantly being exposed to a host of toxic chemicals. Babies
were sleeping in pajamas treated with cancer-causing flame
retardants; they were sucking on bottles laced with plastic
additives believed to alter hormones; their diapers were glued
together with nerve-damaging toxins normally used to kill algae
on the hulls of ships. When European health officials tried to
look into the matter, they were confounded by how little they
actually knew about these and other potentially hazardous
chemicals. Regulators discovered that they had no way of
assessing the dangers of long-term exposure to everyday
products. Some manufacturers of baby goods did not even know
what was in their own products, since chemical producers were
under no obligation to tell them. Such data, if it existed at
all, was secreted away in the vaults of chemical companies and
had never been submitted to any government authority.
In the years since those news reports, the nascent science of
hio-monitoring has provided further insight into how the
industrial chemicals that are in clothes, food packaging,
cosmetics, toys, electronics, and just about every modern
convenience are actually lodging in the human body. Greenpeace
U.K. released a study in 2005 that found numerous toxic
chemicals in the umbilical-cord blood of European infants. That
same year, World Wildlife Fund International tested the blood of
three generations of women from twelve European countries. The
largest number of chemicals -- sixty-three -- was found in the
group of grandmothers. Given the number of years they had had to
accumulate exposure, this result was perhaps not surprising. But
the next-highest level was among their grandchildren, aged
twelve to twenty-eight, who in their short lifetimes had amassed
fifty-nine different toxic chemicals. The blood of a
nineteen-year-old Italian, who later sent me her test results,
included brominated flame retardants, which are potential liver,
thyroid, and neurological toxins that are used to coat many
electronics; the pesticides DDT and lindane, the latter of which
is suspected of contributing to breast and other cancers;
perfluorinated chemicals, known carcinogens that are used as
stain- and water-repellents on clothing, furniture, and
non-stick cookware; and artificial musk aromas, found in soaps
and perfumes, that scientists claim can reduce the body's
ability to expel other toxins.
Bio-monitoring tests in the United States have revealed the same
dangerous chemicals making their way into the blood of
Americans. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention completed screening for the presence of 148 toxic
chemicals in the blood of a broad cross section of Americans; it
found that the vast majority of subjects harbored almost all the
toxins. In the same year, the CDC's National Survey on Family
Growth concluded that rates of infertility were rising for women
under the age of twenty-five, a spike many scientists attribute,
at least in part, to routine exposure to toxic chemicals. The
Environmental Working Group conducted tests on the umbilical
cords of ten newborns in 2006 and discovered that cancer-
causing, endocrine- disrupting, and gene-mutating chemicals had
passed from the mothers to their fetuses through the placenta.
Up until the 1970s, no country had imposed any meaningful
oversight of the tens of thousands of chemicals that had entered
the marketplace since World War II. Then, in 1976, the U.S.
Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), which
granted the government the authority to track industrial
chemicals and to place restrictions on any that proved harmful
to humans or the environment. Because the United States was the
world's preeminent economic power, other major chemical
producers -- Germany, France, and Britain -- soon brought their
national regulations into line with TSCA so as not to lose the
U.S. market. Shortly thereafter, Japan and other countries
hoping to conduct trade with the West also had to adopt the
central principles of the law as their own. Thus, America set
the rules for chemical regulation across the globe.
