Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Greetings and thank your for subscribing!

I do hope you are surviving the rat race that is in progress for the holidays. I should have kept closer watch on my supply, but didn't... I thought I would be able to avoid the mass hysteria but sadly I have to go into Prescott today for Printer cartridges, can't wait for deliver, and I am not looking forward to that jaunt.  The small burg has grown so much that the holiday traffic must be a perfect setting for rage in progress, but I know that my Tolerance Master Formula will keep me smiling all the way knowing that I'm not going to enter into their melee's... Have a great day...

Something To Think About
============================

Super-Size Me, Tokyo Style
By John Feffer,

It looked like they were giving away food.

The crowd was practically euphoric at the recent opening of Costco's third Tokyo-area store along the bay in Yokohama. The aisles were filled with shoppers who marveled at the almost cartoonish quantities of produce and formed polite lines in front of the more popular food samples. Customers were checking out the non-food items - the cookbooks and clothes and even the shiny new snowmobile - but when it came to filling their shopping carts, they reached for the enormous frozen pizzas and bags of onions.

"We have fun here, that's why we come," said one couple, who were sharing pizza and hotdogs with their child in the cafeteria. "It's like a theme park."

The theme of Costco, whether in Japan or the United States, is consumption to the max. The newest Costco in Japan might differ in some particulars from its American version - large containers of Japanese pickles for sale, samples of lychee liqueur on offer - but the overall experience is identical, down to the layout of the store and the fast-food menu at the cafeteria.

For SUV-owning Americans, with our extra freezers and basement pantries, such consumption fuels a super-sized, high caloric lifestyle. But how exactly were these Japanese customers cooking those enormous pizzas, storing those giant mustard jars, and eating those gigantic cuts of meat?

After all, the average Tokyo apartment is so small that it can make even a New Yorker feel like a caged animal. And only a cooking-averse undergraduate could love the typical Japanese kitchenette with its half-size refrigerator and an oven that can grill fish but not much more. To get around the lack of storage space, Tokyo shoppers shop more frequently than their American counterparts and tend to buy a lot of fresh food at local stores. The size of the classic Japanese meal - a few pieces of raw fish or a modest bowl of noodle soup - contrasts sharply with such American faves as the double bacon cheeseburger or the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.

"That was always the fear that the large packs wouldn't sell," says Richard Chavez, who once ran the Asian operations for Costco. "But I have to say, they do very well."

Ken Theriault, manager of the new Yokohama store, agrees. When the first store opened, he says, "People didn't know Costco. Obviously the foreigners came in, they knew how to shop. The Japanese had to learn how to shop."

During the trade wars of the 1980s between the United States and Japan, legislators in Washington sledge-hammered Japanese-made televisions and politicians in Tokyo claimed that the Japanese digestive system couldn't handle American-grown rice. Where Americans saw protectionism, Japanese asserted simply a different system of producing and selling goods. Until the 1990s, mom-and-pop stores still ruled the consumer landscape, and Japanese legislators locked arms to keep out "big box" retailers. As a result, Japanese continue to spend about twice as much for food, which has helped to keep small retailers in business and small farmers on the land.

The Japanese have also pointed to a different way of consuming. Japanese tourists in the United States are appalled at the huge portions at the restaurants, the amount of wasted food, and the way suburbanites fill their shopping carts every week as if they were closet survivalists.

Not to mention the sheer size of Americans themselves.

Thanks to an influx of American-style food, Japan is changing. In the 20 years from 1980 to 1999, Japanese spending on fresh produce dropped 10 percent, while expenditures on Western processed foods jumped 20 percent. Over the same two decades, obesity figures for Japanese males rose 40 percent.

Click to read complete article

LENA'S COMMENT: You can expect Japan's illness rate to jump by 20 percent in the next decade as they join the rest of the civilized world in obesity and joining the rest of the civilized world's catapulting illness and disease...

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

Dr. Kevin Schulman, a professor of internal medicine at Duke University said, "Even though someone over the age of 65 may be in good health, their kidneys don't function as well as they did when they were younger. This is one of the primary reasons that some medications can be harmful. Antidepressants and muscle relaxants can put particular stress on the kidneys."

The Duke team examined the outpatient prescription claims for more than 765,000 people aged 65 or older who had more than one prescription filled during 1999. Using the Beers List, the researchers produced this data:

* More than 20 percent of patients over the age of 65 may be taking inappropriate prescription drugs
* More than 15 percent of these patients received prescriptions for two or more of the drugs on the Beers List
* Four percent of the patients were prescribed three or more drugs on the list
* Psychotropic drugs (such as antidepressants) on the Beers List were prescribed the most, totaling more than 40 percent of the prescriptions
* Muscle relaxants on the Beers List were the second most commonly prescribed

Obviously, there are quite a few doctors out there who are not reading nor learning. And as a result, their patients are suffering.

NEW COMPREHENSIVE ALL-NATURAL PERIO-CARE SYSTEM

STOP Bleeding, Inflamed, Swollen gums and Bad Breathe with herbs!

How do you know if you have periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that will eventually destroy bone and lead to loose teeth and ultimately tooth loss.

Signs of periodontal disease include;
  • Bleeding gums
  • Inflamed gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Bad breath
What causes periodontal disease?
Infections such as bacteria, spirochetes, viruses, amoebas and fungus are apparent in periodontal disease.

Why is it important to treat the underlying infections?
Untreated infections become more severe, possibly overwhelming the immune system and causing symptoms throughout the body as well as in the mouth! Untreated periodontal disease ha been connected to heart disease, pre-term and low birth weight babies. It is thought to contribute to auto-immune conditions as well as diabetes. Of course untreated periodontal disease leads to gum surgery!

How will Perio-Care Products eliminate these infections?
This organized, three-stage approach treats both the immediate discomfort and the underlying problems. Each Stage includes the use of specially formulated dental powder, oral rinse and herbal capsules. Each Stage is designed to attack a different group of infectious organisms. By using all three Stages in an organized, rotating Protocol a wider variety of infectious agents can be eliminated.

WHY USE PERIO-CARE DENTAL PRODUCTS?
These formulas eliminate underlying infections and the symptoms they cause. This means that you can expect Perio-Care to relieve red, swollen and bleeding gums to tighten gums and freshen breath!

Why use several stages rather than just one?
Periodontal disease has multiple and complex causes, No single herb or herbal product can resolve all of these causes for all patients. And because herbs have individualized healing properties and must be carefully combined to achieve a specific goal, not all herbs combines with other herbs compatibly or effectively!

Do I need a special toothbrush?
Not necessarily a special toothbrush but you must use a soft bristle manual toothbrush. Electric or rotary tooth brushes tend to rotate too fast dispersing the powder too rapidly therefore limiting the beneficial effect. For deep pockets we recommend the use of a sulcular brush dipped in Perio-Care Oral Rinse after brushing.

Perio-Care formulated by a periodentist who decided his patients deserved better and has seen remarkable results and less problems!
Most patients see marked improvement in their gums after the first month of following the Protocol!
Perio-Care is formulated without sugar, wheat, corn, salt, fillers, glycerin, fluoride, caffeine, chemicals or artificial colors, flavor or preservatives!

The Claim: Heart Attacks Are More Common During the Holidays
By ANAHAD O'CONNOR

THE FACTS The stress of last-minute shopping, squabbling in-laws and busy airports can make the holidays more a season of headaches than of celebration. But is there any connection between holiday stress and heart attacks?

In several studies, Dr. David P. Phillips and colleagues at the University of California, San Diego, have found that deaths from heart disease and other illnesses tend to dip just before major social occasions, like holidays and cultural events, then climb sharply right after. In their most recent study, appearing in the latest issue of the journal Circulation, they looked at millions of deaths in the United States in the last 30 years and found that the largest spikes in those from heart disease occurred on Christmas Day, Dec. 26 and New Year's Day. The rate on those days was 11.9 percent higher than normal for that time of the year.

They found that this "holiday effect" applied not only to heart attacks, but to deaths from natural causes and other diseases, suggesting that stress might not be the primary culprit.

Instead, the researchers placed the blame on two factors: staffing and shift changes at hospitals that result in poorer medical care, and patients who delay treatment until after the holidays.

THE BOTTOM LINE People are more likely to die from heart disease and other problems during the holidays.

LENA'S COMMENT: Stay away from hospitals during and a few days after Christmas, unless it's an absolute emergency, and you could prevent becoming a statistic!

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

This song was around when I was a child and kids use to sing it and most of us had no idea why or what it meant!

Where, oh where,
Is dear little Nellie?
Where, oh where,
Is dear little Nellie?
Where, oh where,
Is dear little Nellie?
Way down yonder
In the pawpaw patch.

Come on, boys,
Let's go find her.
Come on, boys,
Let's go find her,
Come on, boys,
Let's go find her,
Way down yonder
In the pawpaw patch.

Picking up pawpaws,
Puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Picking up pawpaws,
Puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Picking up pawpaws,
Puttin' 'em in your pocket,
Way down yonder
In the pawpaw patch.

Paw Paw, pawpaw, Graviola and soursop, all the same. Is grown on a very small Graviola tree in the Amazon jungle and some of the Caribbean islands.  The pawpaw is also said to be native to the woodlands of the eastern U.S. The American Indian is credited with spreading the pawpaw across the eastern U.S. to eastern Kansas and Texas, and from the Great Lakes almost to the Gulf. The graviola tree (Annona muricata) produces the delicious fruit commonly called paw-paw, which is widely consumed by indigenous peoples.

Individual fruits weigh 5 to 16 ounces and are 3 to 6 inches in length. The larger sizes will appear plump, similar to the mango. The fruit usually has 10 to 14 seeds in two rows. The brownish to blackish seeds are shaped like lima beans, with a length of 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches. Pawpaw fruits often occur as clusters of up to nine individual fruits. The ripe fruit is soft and thin skinned.

A number of animals such as foxes, opossums, squirrels and raccoons will eat the fruit. But a great thing to grow around deer as goats, deer and rabbits will not eat the leaves or twigs. The Zebra Swallowtail butterfly's larvae feed exclusively on young, pawpaw foliage, but never in great numbers.

The skin of the green fruit usually lightens in color as it ripens and often develops blackish splotches which do not affect the flavor or edibility. The yellow flesh is custard like and highly nutritious. The best fruit has a complex, tropical flavor unlike any other temperate zone fruit. At present, the primary use of pawpaws is for fresh eating out of hand. The ripe fruit is very perishable with a shelf life of 2 or 3 days, but will keep up to 3 weeks if it is refrigerated at 40º - 45º F.

The name of this plant is sometimes spelled Papaw - and in that form is often confused with another fruit that sometimes goes by that name, the Papaya, Carica papaya. (The latter is in a totally different family than our Pawpaw, and can only grow in tropical areas.)

Native Americans used the fruits as food and the bark for medicine and fish nets. Extracts of paw paw have been used as an emetic (inducing vomiting), by Eli Lilly in 1898.

Not only is the pawpaw fruit tasty and healthy but the Pawpaw tree bark and twigs,  may well prove to be the ultimate cancer-fighter. Studies by the National Cancer Institute already show that Graviola extract is 10,000 times stronger than top chemotherapy drugs...

Yet its incredible precision hunts down cancer cells while leaving healthy cells completely alone! Graviola just seems to 'know' which cells to kill and which to avoid. There's no nausea, no hair loss, no weight loss, no weakening of the immune system.

Could this prove to be "The magic bullet" scientists have been seeking for so long. Dr. Garland uses the PawPaw as a cancer treatment in a portion of his cancer patients, with great results!!! But I'm not sure the pharmaceutical world will hone in on this inexpensive treatment!

The Pawpaw taste is a mix of banana, pineapple, and mango and contains a high level of amino acids, vitamins A and C, potassium, along with other nutrients still under study. According to the Purdue University Crop Fact Sheet, the Pawpaw is more nutritious than apples, peaches and grapes in most vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and food energy value. Nutrient rich in Vitamin A, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Essential amino acids, Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Threonine, Tryptophan and Valine. Unless refrigerated, it lasts only two to three days but in the fridge it lasts up to three weeks. You can substitute pawpaws for bananas in many recipes including banana bread. Because of its custardy texture, it's ideal for drink mixes, baby food, and ice cream. Because of its blendability and aroma, it is used in cosmetics and skin products. According to one pawpaw expert on the Internet, "If you have tried them and don't like them, suspect your sample to have been unripe, or from an inferior tree.

Mashed paw paw also makes a great face mask and aids wound healing, while the liquid extract is made from the paw paw leaf and is a rich source of the antioxidant nutrients beta carotene and vitamin C, which explains its relevance in helping to prevent and treat cancer. Also several acetogenins have been isolated from Graviola (PawPaw tree) twigs shown in a chart at ACAM.

Its anti-tumor efficacy against human ovarian carcinoma in athymic mice were demonstrated in studies in 1993.  There have been over 100 scientific papers published on the chemistry and biology of the paw paw compounds.

Paw paw is not toxic according to studies with beagles (dogs). It appears to be impossible to 'overdose', 32 capsules 4x/day were non toxic because it caused vomiting.

In clinical trials with human research subjects, generally using one capsule 4x/day, some breast cancer patients experienced partial or complete tumor reduction.

In men with prostate cancer, some patients experienced subjective benefits as well as tumor reduction and PSA decreases. One patient even took half the suggested dose (mistakenly) and still had great results.

There were good results with lymphoma - Non Hodgkins where white cell counts were reduced, as were lymphocytes. A patient with stage IV lung cancer also had subjective and objective results.

Hundreds of human research subjects have used paw paw, with many types of tumors. Significant reductions in tumor sizes has been seen (verified by CT, etc.) There have been reductions in tumor antigen levels (PSA, CA27/29, CA125, alkaline phosphatase, etc.)

There have been very few unwanted effects, some itching and some nausea/vomiting but many have reported 'increased energy'. There was no hair loss, no GI bleeding, no bone marrow depression.

Benefits have been seen with cold sores, shingles, toe nail fungus, acne, athlete's foot, eczema and psoriasis.

So not only is PawPaw great eating but great medicine as well! I'm sure we will hear much more about this down the road...

I bet you thought I was being paranoid and nuts all these years when I telling you we can't trust the FDA and the drugs they approve for our consumption! I find that I'm not alone in that thinking! Those scientists in the know agrees!

Oversight Is Lacking, F.D.A. Scientists Say
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
December 17, 2004

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (AP) - About two-thirds of Food and Drug Administration scientists are less than fully confident in the agency's monitoring of the safety of prescription drugs now being sold, according to an internal survey.

Also, more than one-third of those scientists have some doubts about the process for approving new drugs, the survey found.

Complete results of the survey, conducted by the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, were released only after an advocacy group filed a Freedom of Information Act request. The release comes in the wake of safety concerns forcing removal from the market of Vioxx, an arthritis drug, and Congressional testimony by an agency scientist that the F.D.A. mishandled safety concerns about other drugs.

The survey sought the opinions of about 400 agency scientists about the process of evaluating and approving prescription drugs. A majority said they were "completely confident" or "mostly confident" about decisions concerning the safety and efficacy of drugs approved for sale. But 31 percent were only "somewhat confident" and 5 percent had no confidence in the safety decisions.

About 66 percent of those surveyed said they were not at all confident or somewhat confident that the F.D.A. adequately monitors the safety of drugs once they are on the market.

Many Counties Failing Fine-Particle Air Rules
By MICHAEL JANOFSKY
December 18, 2004

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17 - About a third of all Americans live in counties that do not meet seven-year-old standards for microscopic particles of pollution that cause thousands of premature deaths a year, the Environmental Protection Agency said Friday.

The 20 states affected, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, now have three years to develop plans to bring their problem counties into compliance by 2010, or face the loss of federal highway money.

This is the first time since the environmental agency set tough new health-based standards in 1997 that it has declared which counties around the country are out of compliance for the fine particles produced by a variety of sources, including car exhausts, wood-burning stoves and power plants.

These sooty chemical particles are known as PM2.5, shorthand for particulate matter measuring no more than 2.5 microns, a tiny fraction of the width of a human hair, so small they can lodge deep in the lungs if inhaled.

The Clinton administration set the rules under the Clean Air Act, which requires that air quality standards be sufficient to protect the health of even the most vulnerable people, like asthmatics and the frail elderly. Industry groups objected at the time, arguing that compliance would be far too costly. Legal challenges went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the rules were upheld.

Today, the finding that most of the country meets the standards was termed "an American success story" by the departing E.P.A. administrator, Michael O. Leavitt, President Bush's choice to be the next secretary of health and human services.

"This is not a story about air getting dirtier," Mr. Leavitt said, concluding what is likely to be his last major effort after 13 months at the agency. "This is a story about higher and more stringent standards and healthier air."

Monitoring by the agency began several years ago and found that of the nation's 3,141 counties, 2,909 - home to 192 million people - were meeting the PM2.5 standards.

But the data also showed that the standards were exceeded in 225 counties and the District of Columbia, with a total of 95 million people. (Seven other counties did not produce enough reliable data to be counted.)

Following up on the Clinton rules, the Bush administration has proposed two measures aimed at reducing emissions of particulate matter and other regulated air pollutants.

One is the Clean Air Interstate Rule, a regulation that would lower emissions from coal-fired power plants, helping to control pollution in 29 Eastern states and the District of Columbia, a region to which many emissions drift from Midwestern plants.

The other is the Clear Skies Initiative, a bill languishing in Congress that many environmental groups say would undercut the Clean Air Act.

Mr. Leavitt had promised to sign the Interstate Rule by the end of the year, but the White House last week pushed final adoption back to March.

Most environmental groups view the Interstate Rule as a useful tool that would at least help one state to force another to restrain emissions that are carried by the winds across state lines. Still, they view the E.P.A.'s efforts as insufficient.

"It's one thing to identify areas with dirty air," said Frank O'Donnell, president of a new environmental watchdog, Clean Air Watch. "It's more important to clean up the pollution causing the dirty air. That's where they are dropping the ball."

Mr. Leavitt said the agency had taken a number of steps to reduce air pollution, including regulations issued in April to control ozone, which causes smog and damages the lungs.

Today's declaration sets in motion complex requirements for the 20 states that have areas in noncompliance with the fine-particle standards. By law, the states must now develop programs, which require federal approval, that will address the sources of the PM2.5 pollution so that compliance is achieved by 2010.

While coal-fired power plants account for much of the problem in the East, vehicle exhaust is the major offender in parts of California. That means an Eastern state's solution might include new technologies for power plant smokestacks, while California could propose anything from electrical outlets at truck stops, so that drivers would have incentive to turn off their engines overnight, to new initiatives for mass transit, said Steve Johnson, deputy E.P.A. administrator. Most states, though, would probably seek to control emissions from all types of sources.

Mr. Johnson said the E.P.A. had not calculated how much it might cost states to comply. But Jeff Clark, an official with the agency's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, said, "Whatever the costs are, the benefits are far bigger."

By the agency's estimates, even partial compliance by 2010 would prevent 15,000 premature deaths a year, 75,000 cases of chronic bronchitis, 20,000 cases of acute bronchitis, 10,000 hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and loss of 3.1 million days worked.
