Vitamin D may
Protect Against MS
December 20, 2006
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Vitamin D may help protect people against multiple
sclerosis.
According to researchers who looked at blood levels of the vitamin and
MS rates in more than 7 million members of the U.S. military, whites
with the highest blood levels of the vitamin had a 62-percent lower risk
of having MS than those with the lowest levels. The effect was not seen
in other ethnic groups.
The investigators decided to study vitamin D's role in the condition
because of its effects on the immune system. MS, which often strikes
young adults and can lead to physical disabilities, is thought to be an
autoimmune disease.
Why the protective effect was not seen in blacks and Hispanics remains a
mystery, but the researchers speculate it may have something to do with
the fact they had significantly lower blood levels of vitamin D overall.
There were also fewer blacks and Hispanics in the study population than
whites.
The investigators report it is too soon to recommend vitamin D
supplements to ward off MS. However, they write these results fit in
with previous studies indicating a link between the vitamin and the
disease. "Our results converge with a growing body of evidence
supporting a protective role for vitamin D in MS development," they
write.
They suggest the next step might be a clinical trial conducted among
people with a first-degree relative with the disease, as these people
are at significantly higher risk of developing MS themselves.
The study was led by investigators from the Harvard School of Public
Health in Boston.

Smart Kids go Vegetarian!
Reported December 20, 2006
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A higher IQ at age 10 makes a child more likely to be a
vegetarian at the age of 30, according to new research. Study authors are not
sure why there is this link but report a number of factors could be involved.
Recent research suggests vegetarianism may be linked to lower cholesterol levels
and a reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This could explain why children
who have higher IQs tend to have lower heart disease later in life -- they are
more likely to be a vegetarian.
For the study, researchers included 8,179 men and women who were 30 years old
and had their IQ tested when they were 10 years old. Researchers report at the
age of 30 about 5 percent of the participants said they were vegetarian. Those
with higher IQ at age 10 had an increased likelihood of being a vegetarian as an
adult. The vegetarians were also more likely to be female, to be of higher
occupational social class, and have higher academic and vocational
qualifications. However, there was no difference in overall incomes.
Researchers say this finding could explain why higher IQ children have better
heart health. They also say it could just be an example of lifestyle preferences
that might be expected to vary with intelligence.

FDA Wants Sterner Pain Reliever Warnings
Dec. 19, 2006
By ANDREW BRIDGES
WASHINGTON (AP) - Popular over-the-counter pain pills such as
aspirin, ibuprofen and acetominophen would have to carry labels
with sterner warnings under a government proposal to better
emphasize the drugs' risks.
Federal health officials on Tuesday cautioned the tens of
millions of Americans who take the drugs of their potentially
serious side effects and released the planned label changes.
Aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and the other related
over-the-counter drugs remain safe and effective when used as
directed, the Food and Drug Administration said.
However, overdoses of acetaminophen can cause serious liver
damage, even death, the FDA said.
For aspirin, ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs, there is a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney
injury even when patients take the correct dose. Those risks,
too, are linked to thousands of deaths each year. The FDA
cautioned the risk is low when compared to the number of
patients who take the drugs.
Experts called the stepped-up warnings long overdue, since
federal advisers called for similar label changes in 2002. An
FDA official chalked it up to the time required to write new
regulations.
"That is one of the disadvantages of the rule-making process,"
said Dr. Charles Ganley, director of the FDA office that
oversees nonprescription products.
The drugs are found in hundreds of medicines sold to treat pain,
headache and fever. Health officials worry that the wide
availability of those combination products can lead to patients
unintentionally overdosing. Doctors report cases of patients
taking two or more medicines - say, one for pain and another for
flu symptoms - without knowing they both contain acetaminophen.
The FDA already updated the warning labels on the drugs in the
past. In 2002, FDA advisers recommended further changes. In
2004, some of the warnings contained in the new proposal were
included in pharmacy brochures and public service ads - a move
that some critics said didn't go far enough.
The latest proposed changes largely would strengthen and
highlight those warning labels. They also would require the more
prominent disclosure, using fluorescent or bold-faced type, of
the presence of the drugs among a medication's ingredients.
"It's a step that's overdue and really reflects the consensus
that came out of the meeting four years ago, which is helping
the consumer know what they are taking," said Dr. Paul Watkins,
a professor of medicine at The University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and a member of the 2002 advisory panel.
For acetaminophen, the labels also would warn of the risk of
severe liver damage if patients take more than the recommended
dose or consume three or more alcoholic drinks a day while on
the drugs. The labels also would warn patients not to take
multiple medicines that contain acetaminophen. In any given
week, an estimated 48 million Americans take an acetaminophen
product.
For aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and other nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, their labels would have to
contain additional warnings of the risk of stomach bleeding. The
labels would note the risk is higher in patients older than 59,
or in those who have stomach ulcers, take blood-thinning drugs
or steroids, use other drugs that contain an NSAID or remain on
the medications for an extended period. An estimated 17 million
Americans take an NSAID daily.
Acetaminophen is sold under the brand name Tylenol and in
multiple generic versions. Acetaminophen sends an estimated
56,000 people to the emergency room each year, the FDA said.
About 100 people die each year after unintentionally overdosing
on the drug.
Ibuprofen is sold under the brand names Advil and Motrin and in
generic form as well. Naproxen is best known as Aleve, but is
also sold generically. The NSAIDs are blamed for sending more
than 200,000 Americans to the hospital every year, and are
linked to an estimated 16,000 deaths, the FDA said. The agency
said it would address the cardiovascular risks of
nonprescription NSAIDs in the future.
The proposal appeared Tuesday on the FDA's Web site ahead of its
expected Dec. 26 publication in the Federal Register. Since it
could take a year or more for the rule to become final, the FDA
said it strongly encouraged companies to update their labels in
the meantime, as some companies already have done.
Food and
Drug Administration
LENA'S COMMENT: In the '70s I worked with a
doctor who was one of the researchers at Scripps Institute
studying Acetaminophen and it's toxic effects in relation to the
body. He told me that the study conclusions they found were very
alarming... That was; there isn't a safe level for
acetaminophen that even very small doses cause liver damage in
most. Of course that was never released to the public, it
was for doctor's only... So the warnings they are asking for
isn't going to be accurate by a long shot...

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT

SEWAGE DISCHARGES
THREATEN GREAT LAKES
By Catherine Komp
A new report has found that U.S. and Canadian cities are
polluting the Great Lakes system with billions of gallons of a
toxic "cocktail" of sewage and storm water each year.
The Canadian-based Sierra Legal Defence Fund, which produced the
report, says it means parts of the largest freshwater ecosystem
on the planet are "in peril."
The researchers say the massive discharges of sewage into the
lakes are making fish unsafe to eat, rendering the lakes unsafe
for recreation, and polluting one of the main sources of
drinking water in the region. About 84 percent of North
America's "surface fresh water" comes from the Great Lakes,
according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
The "Great Lakes Sewage Report Card" analyzed twenty US and
Canadian cities, from Deluth to Kingston to Cleveland. It
concluded that despite billions of dollars invested to improve
sewage treatment over the last three decades, the cities dump a
combined 24 billion gallons of municipal sewage -- a mixture of
water, human waste, micro-organisms, disease-causing pathogens
and toxic chemicals -- directly into local water systems each
year.
Detroit and Cleveland ranked the lowest in the Sierra Legal
report, generating a combined 338 billion gallons of sewage per
year. Both scored poorly for some 19 billion gallons of
"overflow" from their sewer systems into the environment.
Green Bay, Wisconsin received one the highest scores in the
report because it had no known discharges of untreated sewage,
no sewage overflow and no pollution-related violations.
Unlike Green Bay, the researchers said, numerous cities around
the Great Lakes use combined sewage systems, or CSOs, that carry
both sewage and storm-water. During heavy rainfall, these
systems can exceed capacity and raw sewage can overflow directly
into the environment.
The US government drafted a Combined Sewer Overflow Control
Policy in 1994 and requires communities to develop long-term CSO
control plans to help local governments comply with the Clean
Water Act. The problem is not isolated to the Great Lakes
region. As previously reported by The NewStandard, some 770
cities across the country use combined systems.
In 2004, President Bush signed an executive order creating the
Great Lakes Interagency Task Force to deal with the accumulating
environmental problems facing this freshwater system. The task
force's responsibilities include improving water quality.
Calling the Great Lakes "a gift to all that live in the basin,"
Sierra Legal makes several recommendations, including a bigger
financial investment from federal and local governments to
improve CSOs. The group also says that more regulations, from
banning toxic substances in manufacturing industries to
enforcing sewer-use laws, could help to protect the water and
biodiversity of the Great Lakes region.
"Countries as wealthy as Canada and [the] United States can
surely afford to adequately treat their waste accordingly,"
wrote the report's authors.
